Robert Catesby was the brains

behind the deadly plan. He

couldn't work alone, so he

athered a roup o! like"mindedmen, includin the !amous Guy

Fawkes, to help him. #he

an's plan came to be called

the Gunpowder $lot.

November 5th 1605 was set to be a special and happy day...

He did not know that e%eryone oin to the ceremony would be in ra%e

daner. For more than a year a an o! men had been secretly plottin a

hue e&plosion to blow up $arliament and the in. #he an were

Catholics and were anry that the $rotestant in and $arliament wouldnot let Catholics practise their reliion.

in (ames ) was oin to $arliament !or the yearly Royal *tate+penin o! $arliament ceremony and the buildin would be packed with

people.

and pretended he was $ercy's ser%ant. #hey then

and you wanted to et it into the most important buildin in the

country without anyone noticin. 3ot an easy thin to do.

bundles o! !irewood, 5ust in case

anyone looked inside.

onteale didn't know what to make o! the letter and he had no way o!

knowin who had written it. 1as it a nasty 5oke or was it a serious

warnin2

#en days to o. #he unpowder was ready. #he plotters were ready. 1hat

could possibly o wron2 1ell, all it took to upset those care!ul plans was

a %ery mysterious letter.

Lord onteale, a %ery important

man and !riend o! in (ames ),

was i%en a letter at dinner on

+ctober 8th -6. 7 tall,

mysterious straner had handed it

to his ser%ant in the street earlier in

the e%enin. #he letter warned him

not to o to the ceremony on

3o%ember 6th as somethin terrible

out about the letter. Catesby wasn't

oin to i%e up thouh. He sent Guy

Fawkes down to the cellar to checkthat the unpowder stores were still

sa!e. 7ll the an could do now was

wait.

Lord onteale took his mystery letter to show to !riends in the

o%ernment, but they were slow to act. in (ames was awayhuntin and many ministers were suspicious it miht be a !ake.

For a !ew days all was 9uiet.

)n the middle o! the a!ternoon, he heard %oices approachin the

cellar. *oldiers had come to search the storerooms, 5ust in case the

warnin letter had been true. #hey !ound Fawkes, and e%en

9uestioned him, but didn't !ind the unpowder.

#he a!ternoon be!ore $arliament

was due to open, Guy Fawkes tookup his position in the unpowder

cellar. He settled down with his

watch and some matches, all ready

to put the murderous plan into

action.

Fawkes bra%ely stayed in the cellar to carry out his task, probably

thinkin he'd ot away with it, but no. Later that e%enin the soldiers

came back, and this time they !ound the deadly unpowder

arrested.

7!ter his arrest in the cellar, Fawkes was taken to see in (ames and

his court. He re!used to answer most o! their 9uestions and made it%ery clear that he didn't ha%e any rerets at all.

$erhaps most annoyinly !or the in, Fawkes wouldn't re%eal who

the other plotters were. Reports written at the time 9uote him as

sayin, ;

the #ower o! London in the hope that the uards there couldet him to talk. Fawkes was touh and determined not to i%e

away any secrets.
