Austin Newcomers
Planning and Executing a Great Bike Ride with Your Grandkids October Meeting and Luncheon - Wednesday, October 17, 11 am
Welcome Mat
Theater, the art scene, live music, trendy restaurants and bars, historic cemeteries, hiking, golfing,
hobbies , games. This month’s Welcome Mat offers a variety of exciting ways to explore Austin with
friends.
When you ask almost anybody new
to Austin why they moved here, the
answer is more often than not, “my
grandchildren are here.” With so
many of you here to be near your
little darlings, ANC decided you
might like something really fun to do with them. Enter
Deaton Bednar!
Come to our September luncheon to meet Deaton,
owner of Texas Bike Tours. She plans outrageously
fun bike outings for a living and will happily share
some of the most fun and fascinating biking destina-
tions in Austin. She’ll tell you about kid-pleasing hid-
den gems, historical landmarks, adventurous activi-
ties, and yummy snack break options for you to enjoy
with your grand kids while reliving again your own
childhood joy of being on a bike. Don’t have a bike?
Deaton can tell you good places to rent them--and
what type of bike would work best
for you and your fitness level.
Do something nice for your grand-
kids and do something equally
great for yourself. Come hear from
this “Houdini of the Handlebars” at our October lunch-
eon and make your motto the same as Deaton’s,
“LET’S RIDE!”
11:00 am - social hour
12:00 pm - lunch & program
$30/person. Pay online before noon, October 15th,
or mail in your check and reservation form (page 14)
by October 10.
2 October 2018
Hello Fellow Newcomers,
“Let’s have lunch, sometime.” That
phrase has had a major impact on my
life. Having lunch with friends and
family gives me the opportunity to
catch up with people I love. When I ask
someone I just met if they would like to
go to lunch, it opens the door to the promise of new friendships.
There is a “lunch” opportunity at Austin Newcomers Club, on the
third Wednesday of the month, except for November and
December when the luncheon is on the second Wednesday of
the month.
The monthly luncheon is the foundation of Austin Newcomers
Club. This is the opportunity to catch up with our friends while
enjoying lunch and listening to speakers from all disciplines of
our dynamic city. The monthly luncheon may also be the first
social outing for a new resident to Austin. This is our chance to
turn on the “southern charm” and welcome new people to our
community. By the way, don’t stay away from the luncheons
because you need a ride, email me at
[email protected] and I will do my best to set up
carpooling opportunities.
Chez Zee has been hosting our luncheons for the last three
years. This is a charming restaurant located at Mopac and 2222.
For our luncheon, we have our own private dining area with
tables set up in a cozy arrangement and there are twinkling
lights scattered throughout the room adding an intimate
ambiance.
Chez Zee is a meeting spot for several community groups and
organizations. The restaurant promotes local artists by
displaying their art on the walls and offering prints for sale. And
if you love to shop, there is a kiosk near the entrance to the
main dining area, displaying a variety of gift items.
I look forward to seeing the luncheon regulars and I hope to see
many new faces at our monthly luncheons this year.
See you soon!
