Mentum Planet offers a module of Automatic Cell Planning ACP, which, as the name indicates, allow the automatic network planning optimization to get the best configuration

This presentation is aimed to have the description on how to configure ACP Module of Mentum Planet.

It is necessary to give some input and constraints, which will be cover here, focus specially on LTE

ACP License is required to use it in Planet

1.Defining area

Create Polygon Area.

- On Layer control, select Cosmetic Layer as Editable

- Identify the area you want to optimize on map, and in Drawing Toolbar select Polygon icon to draw the area.

- After selecting the area you created above, change to Region

‒ GIS > Objects > Convert Region

Prior to optimizing with ACP, it is necessary to set up the Optimization Area. This is the area that will be used by the tool to get the statistic in which it is basing to implement the optimization changes


Create Polygons and Area in Project Data

- Right click Areas in Project Data Category and select create

- Enter the any name and check Selection, and click Generate

Now the area to optimize is defined and is available in Areas folder in Project Explorer Category


2.Selecting siteS

Create Optimization Group and add sectors- Right click Local on Group in Sites

Category in Project Explorer and select New

- Enter group name- Select the sites on Map window- Right click the Group you created and

select Add Selected Sectors And Repeators

Create Simulation Group and add sectors- Select sites that will be simulated (bigger

area than optimization area and should include the Optimized Group sites). In can be created with the same steps as before

Next step is prepare the site group that will be optimized and the group that will be simulated.


Optimization constraint refers to the site parameters that can be optimized automatically by the tool.

These parameters can be found in the Tabular Editor of the site list

Planet offers a wide variety of optimization constraints for the sectors which goes from the basic as can be Azimuth, Electrical tilt, Mechanical tilt, Antenna Height, etc., to others not so common like Electrical Azimuth or Antenna Beamwidth

2.Site optimization constraints


Set Optimization Constraint for each sectors- Right click the Optimization Group created and select Tabular Editor, then go

to Optimization Constraint tab- Select properties desired to optimize by enabling respective checkbox

(Azimuth, Etilt, Mech tilt, Antenna height, power, etc)- Define Optimization Range for those properties.

- Eg.Azimuth : Relative -30 to +30 (Precision =

5)Mechanical Tilt : Relative -5 to +5 (Precision = 1)Electrical Tilt : Relative -5 to +5 (Precision = 1)

2.Site optimization constraints


Generate Prediction- Go to Network Analysis

Category. Right click on LTE FDD analysis and select New.

- Give a name to the simulation, which will include the original plots before optimization.

- Select the simulation group created.

- Set the rest of parameters according to preconfigured simulation conditions and run the prediction

4. Optimization Profile Defining optimization Profile

- Right click Optimization Profiles in Optimization Category in Project Explorer and select New.

- In Optimization Profile Editor, select add goals (add technology goals, can be selected goals for LTE and WCDMA)

- Enter name for the Goal, technology and carrier.


Defining optimization Profile- Select type for Goal from drop down list

menu. Goal types can be related to RSRP, RSRQ, CINR, etc.

- Select the threshold for that selected type (threshold used by Planet used for reference to get statistics)

- Multiple Goals can be configured within the same Optimization Profile (LTE &WCDMA).

- For each goal, it needs to be followed same previous steps.

- Click OK

5. Optimization Scenarios Set Optimization scenario

- Right click Optimizations in Optimization Category in Project Explorer and select New.

- In Optimization Settings Wizard, enter Name of the settings and select Site Optimization


Set Optimization Scenario- Check Group selection in Sectors

and Repeaters to optimize and select the Optimization Group you created on above section from pull-down menu

- Check Group selection in Sectors and Repeaters to consider and select Simulation Group you created on above section from pull-down menu

- Select Save settings and open scenario wizard in Save and create scenario

- Click Finish

5. Optimization Scenarios


Set Optimization Scenario- Enter Name of Scenario case.

- Check User-defined area and then Add bottom.

- Select the User-defined areas and in drop down list select the optimization area defined previously.

- Select Optimization Profile created, and also select Outdoor Environment and enter Weight 1 (different areas can be defined for optimization profile, so if that it the case each one should have a weight to prioritize).



Set Optimization Scenario - Select each equipment type

- Check Generate optimization steps and select Automatic in Convergence

- Select Save settings and start optimization to Save and generate, or only Save settings to save and exit

- Click Finish

- Following the same steps, multiple Optimization Profiles can be configured within one Optimization Scenario.



Generate Optimization- You can check the

optimization status for each goals as pictured in the figure during generating



Displaying Optimization Goal Report (Report to check achieved coverage for defined goal step by step of automatic optimization)- Right click in the Optimization

Scenario Case created from Optimizations and select Display Optimization Report > Goals

6. Optimization Results


Displaying Optimization configuration Report (Report with Final Configuration after optimization)- Right click Optimization Scenario case

created previously in Optimizations and select Display Optimization Report > Configuration > Final Step or Specific Steps

- To Display configuration label on the map, just select the desired column and click Generate Labels Icon



Displaying Optimization configuration Changes Report (Report where a table comparison can be seen with original and optimized parameters)- Right click Optimization Scenario case

created previously in Optimizations and select Display Optimization Report > Configuration Changes

- To Display configuration label on the map, just select the desired column and click Generate Labels Icon



Apply Optimization Changes. Once the scenario ends running, the optimization changes are already shown in the tabular editor, but they are not saved. It is possible to apply optimization changes step by step, final, or original as desired


- Right click Optimization Scenario you created above section and select Apply Optimization Changes > Final Step or Specific Steps

- If you’d like to apply original configuration after applying optimization changes, select Apply Original Configuration

- It is possible to alternate between original and Optimized configuration as desired with the use of shown menu


Evaluate optimized area in Network Analysis- Generate Network analysis for each technology (WCDMA & LTE) with

optimization changes- You can see and compare both coverage visuallyOriginalOriginal OptimizedOptimized



Create statistical graph using Simulation Layer statistics- Go to Network Analysis Category

in Project Explorer and right click Network Analysis Layer desired for statistics and select Statistics (Available to select multiple plots layers)



Create statistical graph using Layer statistics- In Analysis settings, select the

Analysis area you created above section and check Exclude null values

- Select Layer branch and define Threshold definition on Classification Settings (threshold used to show statistics ranges)- Copy and Paste if desired

- Click Calculate Statistics



Create statistical graph using Layer statistics- Once obtained the report,

information shown is related to % of Areas. Excel can be used to create the statistic Graph bars by copy and paste the values from Planet



Comments Depending on Analysis of results, it may be required to run ACP several

times with different constraint conditions to have desired results, which can be a time consuming process

When using ACP in a overlay network, it is suggested to give priority to one of the Technologies (LTE priority over WCDMA or WCDMA over LTE, depending on the importance of the network to customer). Giving equal priority with the constraint configuration for both technologies may not bring desired result if these constraints are several. Better focus on one technology

It is suggested to analyze all the changes proposed by the tool comparing site characteristics, clutter, morphology, etc (once ACP is done), to see if the change is really good to implement it as tool suggest or not.
