• The chamber, in partnership with the City of Pittsburg,continued its role in economic development and the effort togrow Pittsburg area employers. All told, more than $65 millionin construction projects is being invested in our community aswe speak. This complements job growth of almost 900 newpositions in the last year alone and almost 2,000 over the lastthree years

• The chamber maintained its aggressive legislative advocacyefforts to further several causes vital to the future of thesoutheast Kansas economy. The chamber delivered legislativetestimony, met face-to-face with key state and federal leaders,and continued the First Saturday Legislative Breakfast Series asa way to further enhance communication with local legislators.

• Specifically, the chamber advocated for the continued progresson a four-lane Highway 69, the creation of a CertifiedWorkforce Educator degree program at Pittsburg StateUniversity and the launch of a regional technical educationcenter in Crawford County. All three of these initiatives arecrucial to the continued economic growth of our area.

• Knowing that a successful holiday shopping season was vitalfor local merchants, the chamber joined various partners toproduce a marketing campaign encouraging local residentsto keep their shopping dollars here. The response wastremendous and, despite a lagging national economy, Pittsburgsales receipts were up 10% over the previous year.

• The chamber furthered this holiday shopping exposure forlocal merchants by hosting the successful Ladies’ HolidayShopping Event last November. More than 100 local ladiesconverged on Parrot Bey to preview the latest offerings fromlocal businesses in advance of the holiday shopping season.

• The chamber coordinated another extremely successfulbusiness expo, featuring over 45 of the area’s top businessesshowcasing their goods and services. Getting businesses andorganizations in front of potential customers and suppliers isamong the purest forms of our work.

• The chamber created the “Get N2 Pitt” discount card, whichwas distributed to over 1,500 incomingPittsburg State University students atthe beginning of the fall semester. Thecard helps connect local businesseswith those students.

• The chamber partnered with the Crawford County Convention& Visitors Bureau to grow the Community Connection, aweekly 30-minute radio segment highlighting Pittsburg areabusinesses and events.

About the ChamberMore than a century ago, leaders in the Pittsburg area saw a need for a

coalition of professionals to serve as a united voice representing the

interests of business. As a result, the organization which is now the

Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce was created in 1897. By pooling

resources, time and talent, the business community began to effectively

work together to build a healthy economy and improve the quality of life.

Today, the Chamber remains a force for positive change in the Pittsburg

area. We are the leading advocate for the business community. The

Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to helping member

businesses grow through an array of programs and activities.

fIrsT frIdAY EVEnT sErIEsThis monthly gathering is held to give members an

opportunity to learn about a important topic related tobusiness or community and features a keynote speaker.

hOME fOr ThE hOLIdAYs CAMPAIGnThe Home for the Holiday Campaign is the chamber’s

way of promoting the “Shop Local” message during theholiday season. Community members register atparticipating merchants, then through weekly drawingsshoppers have an opportunity to win Christmas Cash giftcertificates. The gift certificates can be redeemed at anyparticipating merchant.

ChAMBEr fOundATIOn GOLf CLAssICThe Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation

Golf Classic Tournament is held annually in May. Thisfundraiser allows the Chamber Foundation to continueeducational programs such as Leadership CrawfordCounty and Leadership High. The Pittsburg AreaChamber of Commerce is grateful for the active support ofour members and will continually strive to offer excellenteducational opportunities for the community.

AnnuAL BAnquETThe Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce Annual

Banquet is held in late May. The Annual Banquetrecognizes chamber members for their dedication andparticipation in the community throughout the year.Numerous awards are presented during the event, whichinclude Spirit of Pittsburg, Small Business of the Year, andEmployer of the Year.

BIz ExPOThis event is held annually

during the last Friday andSaturday in March. The BizExpo is the chamber’sannual trade show thatallows area businesses toshowcase their products andservices to the public. Heldat Meadowbrook Mall inPittsburg, the event attractsover 1,000 visitors during thetwo days. (Pictured right)

GIfT CErTIfICATE PrOGrAM The Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce Community

Gift Certificate Program is a cost-effective way to keep ourshopping dollars at home. This program providescompanies and individuals the option to give communitygift certificates as promotional items or gifts, while at thesame time supporting chamber member businesses. Join the60-plus merchants who have taken advantage of this greatopportunity.

rEd COMMunICATIOn sYsTEMThe Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce has introduced

an exciting new initiative aimed at delivering up to theminute news and event information to our members. RED(Real-time Events Delivered) is an application that allowsmembers to opt-in to receive only the information they wantto receive, in the manner in which they wish to receive it.The application is free of charge and is open to anyemployee of a chamber business or organization. Theapplication also provides a complete member listingaccessible on mobile devices.

CEO LunChEOn sErIEsThe Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce has partnered

with the City of Pittsburg and the Pittsburg Area YoungProfessionals to offer the CEO Luncheon Series. The goalof the series is to connect aspiring entrepreneurs withsuccessful business owners. Each luncheon features akeynote CEO who speaks about his or her company andoffers advice based on personal business experiences.(Pictured below)

exclusively to chamber member to provide information aboutchamber news and events.

The Community Newsletter is sent out the first week of everymonth and contains news and announcements from chambermembers. All members are welcome to submit informationfor the Community Newsletter.

BusInEss rEfErrALsChamber members are referred in response to inquiries

from tourists, residents, businesses and those relocating tothe area. These referrals are tracked and reported to ourmembership. On average, the chamber refers approximately96 businesses each month.

COMMunITY COnnECTIOnThe Community Connection airs every Wednesday

The show featuresdifferent guests every week, and is focused on promotingupcoming events in the area, local business offerings, anddiscussing important issues taking place in our community.The show is co-sponsored by the chamber and the CrawfordCounty Convention and Visitors Bureau.

LEAdErshIP hIGhThe mission of Leadership High is to strengthen and

enhance positive leadership and team-building skills in areahigh school freshmen, as well as to challenge students inbuilding confidence and teach them capacities to lead andgive back to the community. The philosophy of the programis based upon the concept of 21st Century ServantLeadership. It is structured on teamwork and communityinvolvement; seeks to expand the decision-making processof those involved; is based on ethical and caring behavior;and enhances the growth of people while at the same timeimproving the quality of our many educational institutions.

YOuTh LEAdErshIP CrAWfOrd COunTYThe Youth Leadership Program focuses on developing the

next generation of servant leaders in our communitythrough role model interaction and developmentalactivities, including: working as a team, understandingdiversity, communicating effectively, resolving conflict,leading by example and providing servant leadership. TheCrawford County Youth Leadership Program includes allJunior High Schools in Crawford County.

LEAdErshIP CrAWfOrd COunTYThe purpose of Leadership Crawford County is to develop leaders who will share with others the leadershipskills they have learned and who will assume an active role in making a difference in the community, theirworkplace and their family structure. It is a program where participants become facilitative, collaborative leaderswho can make their community a better place for all people to live and grow. In six one-day sessions, classmembers will be introduced to 21st century leadership capacities and will become more familiar with the area.

MOCk InTErVIEWsHigh School Junior and Senior students have the

opportunity to participate in a realistic job interviewexperience. The project is overseen by the BusinessEducation Alliance, Pittsburg High School staff and humanresource specialists from the area.

BusInEss EduCATIOn ALLIAnCEA collaborative effort formed by the City of Pittsburg,

Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce and USD #250, thisgroup consists of business and educational professionals inthe Pittsburg area. They strive to provide a link betweenschools and businesses to identify career needs and developstrategies to offer students knowledge and insight intovarious career opportunities. Events include mockinterviews, job fairs and job shadowing.

ArEA MAP Approximately 3,000 maps are published every other year.Pittsburg area maps are distributed to chamber memberbusinesses, people relocating to the area and are providedto guests visiting our area. Highlight your business byadvertising in this valuable resource. Advertiser businessesare also highlighted in an online version of the map.

CrAWfOrd COunTY CArEErOPPOrTunITIEs dAYOrganized by the Business Education Alliance, the goal of

this fair is to provide area Junior and Senior High Schoolstudents information on the options available to them locallyupon completion of high school. Local businessesparticipate in a “Job Fair” type setting and interact withstudents.

MAYOr’s sTATE Of ThE CITY AddrEssThe Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of

Pittsburg co-host the annual Mayor's State of the CityAddress held at Pittsburg’s Memorial Auditorium. TheMayor highlights the City’s most recent accomplishmentsand announces his/her goals for the upcoming year.

PITTsBurG ArEA dAY On ThE hILLThe Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce Government

Review Council goes to Topeka for the annual "PittsburgArea Day on the Hill" each Spring. "Pittsburg Area Day onthe Hill" provides an opportunity for four area communities(Arma, Cherokee, Frontenac and Pittsburg) to visit withlegislators from across the state of Kansas in their workingenvironment.

LEGIsLATIVE uPdATEsLegislative updates, receptions and luncheons are held

throughout the year. The chamber visits Topeka at leasttwice a year to meet with legislators from across the stateand discuss issues which directly affect our region andpossibly your business.

Held the first Saturday of each month during the KansasLegislative session, the breakfasts provide an opportunityfor guests hear updates from local legislators and to askquestions.

anniversary in 2014. A mild, four-season climate makes

outdoor activities a favorite pastime ofmany southeast Kansas residents,including swimming, golfing, hunting,fishing, bowling, biking and camping.

Hikers and bikers will enjoyWilderness Park, which includes fourmiles of trails and a chance for wildlifeobservation. In 2009, Pittsburg openedthe 23rd Street Bike Park, whichincludes 3 different trails and a skillsarea for bikers.

At Pittsburg’s Lincoln Park, visitorscan enjoy three shelter houses with

The Pittsburg AquaticCenter features a zero-depth entry pool, divingboards, tube slides andlazy river. A children’spool for children sevenand under has zero-depthentry, a frog slide andfountains. The FrontenacCity Pool has zero-depthentry, a sun deck, anddiving boards.


Schlanger Park is a large, open park with two shelterhouses. “The Pitt” skatepark offers fun for skateboarders, BMX riders and inline skaters. The park alsohas basketball, tennis and sand volleyball courts.

Crestwood Country Club, open only to members andtheir guests, offers a championship-level golf course, afully-stocked pro shop, dining and swimming. Four OaksGolf Course and Countryside Golf Course, a 9-holecourse located just south of Pittsburg, are open to thepublic.

The Pittsburg Family YMCA offers diverse fitnessclasses for all ages and abilities, as well as an indoorOlympic size pool, basketball and racquetball courts.

Hunting and fishing opportunities abound in areamined land, wildlife areas and state parks. CrawfordState Park in nearby Farlington is home to the county’sonly state fishing lake, which at 150 acres, offers boating,fishing and water sport activities. The park also offerscamping spaces, shelter houses and a marina.

Spectator athletics play a prominent role in thePittsburg area, with local schools commonly competingfor state championships. Of course, Brandenburg Field atCarnie Smith Stadium is where you’ll find most residentson any given Saturday in the fall. Pittsburg StateUniversity took home their fourth Divsion II NationalFootball Champsionship in 2011.

Free Pittsburg area attractions open virtually year-round include the Crawford County Historical Museum,Immigrant Park, Miner’s Memorial, Pittsburg StateUniversity Veteran’s Memorial Amphitheater, CaronaDepot and the Hotel Stilwell.

ArMA www.armakansas.orgA town rich in coal mining and railroad heritage, Arma is a

small community with a friendly atmosphere. The town wasincorporated in 1909 as a third class city. Prior to that time,Arma was a bustling coal camp known as Rust. The nameArma came from one of the owners of land north and east ofthe camp at the time of its incorporation — William F.Armacost. The city includes a strong school district, establishedlocal businesses, and recreation for children with several parks,a swimming pool and ball fields.

ChErOkEECherokee is a small town located along Highway 400 in the

south portion of Crawford County. Between the years of 1990to 2000, the city’s population rose significantly from 651 to 722people. A reason for this strong increase in population is thecity’s convenient location, in proximity to Parsons andPittsburg. While close in location to the larger cities in the area,Cherokee maintains a rural setting with good schools, a lowcrime rate and active city government.

frAnkLInFranklin began as a mining community in the early 1900s. It

is located just off Highway 69 Bypass which is a major corridorbetween Kansas City and Pittsburg, Ks. Franklin offersresidents, visitors and businesses a clean, friendly, small townenvironment with a moderate climate.

A devastating tornado struck Franklin on May 4, 2003.Approximately 1/3 of the homes were completely destroyedby the storm and many more sustainined major and minordamage.

economic growth. Over the past three years, Frontenac haswitnessed a significant increase in population and residentialhousing. Frontenac residents come from a variety of heritages,such as Italian, French, German and Austrian. Frontenac ishome to a one-of-a-kind training facility in the U.S.- the HarleyDavidson Technical Training Facility. This unique facilityattracts students from all parts of the nation. The city also hosts“Festa Italiana”, an event that brings the flavors of Italy toSoutheast Kansas each fall as a fundraiser for the FrontenacEducation Foundation.

PITTsBurG www.pittks.orgPittsburg is currently the largest city in Southeast Kansas.

Pittsburg was established in 1876 by Col. E.H. Brown with thefirst home built that same year by J.T. Roach. The city’s firstbusiness was a general store started by G. W. Seabury and Co.Pittsburg was incorporated in 1879 as a third class city whichsparked the population to grow.

This increase was due to jobs created with coal mining and therailroad. Coal mining was the main occupation at the time, with11,835 miners employed by 55 different coal companies.

Both businesses and individuals continue to be attracted toPittsburg’s economic growth. Recent years have seen asubstantial increase in both retail services and housingconstruction.


Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg is a regional leader in healthcare for Southeast Kansas. Their comprehensive Cancer Centerwas among the first in the region and is fully certified by theAmerican College of Surgeons. The Via Christi Heart Centerfeatures a state-of-the-art catheterization lab and CardiacStepdown Unit. The Emergency Department is recognized as aLevel III Trauma Center by the Committee on Trauma of theAmerican College of Surgeons. Via Christi has a LinearAccelerator in the Cancer Center, and a Catheterization Lab inthe Heart Center .

The Pittsburg area is also home to the Girard Medical Center.Girard Medical Center strives to be the preferred health careprovider, promoting healthier lives, and being a recognizedleader in providing quality, cost-effective care for the people andcommunities in Southeast Kansas. Girard Medical Center hasrecently undergone a significant renovation of their facilitymaking it a more peaceful, private and more comfortableatmosphere while continuing to provide high-quality care theirpatients have come to expect. The hospital is located in Girard,while also offering clinics with primary care physicians in Arma,Girard, Cherokee and Frontenac. The clinic in Frontenac offersextended night and weekend hours.

Area residents have access to 911 care by Crawford CountyEmergency Medical Services 24 hours a day, seven days a week,based out of three ambulance stations at key points throughoutthe county.

Open MRI of Pittsburg, home to the Hitachi AIRIS II, provides

the consistent high quality images needed for a comprehensivediagnosis. Century Surgery Associates provides quality healthcare for elective surgery.

The Pittsburg area has several privately-owned nursing homesand assisted living complexes. These facilities provide a range ofservices, including intermediate and skilled nursing care andcare for the mentally and physically challenged. Harry HynesMemorial Hospice, Caring Hands Hospice and HospiceCompassus provide health care for the terminally ill.

The Crawford County Mental Health Center, in partnershipwith other agencies, coordinates general health and welfareservices and substance abuse treatment for area residents.

Several locally-owned chiropractic offices offer nutritionaltherapy, acupuncture, rehabilitation and massage therapy.

Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas offerscomprehensive medical and obstetrics services, dental, mentalhealth, low cost medications and support services includingdiabetic and nutritional counseling, eligibility assistance, legalservices and language interpretation. CHC/SEK employs morethan 160 staff including three family practice physicians, twopediatricians, an internist, a psychiatrist, six advanced nursepractitioners, six dentists, and six dental hygienists.

The Pittsburg Area is also serviced by EagleMed, a critical caretransport service. EagleMed is accredited by the Commission onAccreditation of Medical Transport Services and is fullyequipped with heart monitors and other transport and standardequipment which truly makes it a “Flying ICU”.

Congratulations to the team of the Via Christi Cancer Center for achieving full accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Accreditation is the seal of approval for cancer programs from the American College of Surgeons and formally acknowledges Via Christi’s commitment to providing high-quality cancer care to our community and patients. Health Care


Along with serving as one of the primary economic engines

of southeast Kansas, education is the foundation of the

Pittsburg area’s future. One of six Kansas Regents Universities,

Pittsburg State University continues to report record

enrollment. The university continues its commitment to

provide the finest facilities and faculty for its students. The U.S.

News and World Report’s “2015 Best Colleges” included PSU

on its list of top tier “Best Regional Universities” in the

Midwest. U.S. News based its rankings on academic programs,

graduation and retention rates, admission standards, peer

rankings and the size of university endowments. The growth

at Pitt State is evident by the impressive amount of construction

on and around the campus. Two of the most noticeable projects

are the $33 million Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, and the

$13 million Robert W. Plaster Center.

The Pittsburg area also features top-quality primary

education. USD 250 (Pittsburg Community Schools) boasts over

2,600 students and 500 employees working daily to provide a

first-class teaching and learning environment for students pre-

kindergarten through the senior year of high school. USD 250

students are served in four elementary schools, a middle school,

a high school, and an alternative education setting. All facilities

have been renovated or newly constructed since 2001 and

contain the latest equipment and technology for facilitating

student inquiry and learning. Approximately 60% of USD 250

staff possess a master’s degree or higher, which showcases the

district’s immensely well-trained and experienced faculty.

All three USD 249 (Frontenac) schools are located on the

school campus a block south of the downtown area. In

September of 2010 Frank Layden Elementary School enrolled

427 students in grades K-5. There were 222 students in grades

6-8 at Frontenac Junior High School and Frontenac High School

is a 3A school that had 236 students in grades 9-12. All are fully

accredited by the Kansas State Department of Education.

Currently 72 faculty and 46 staff serve 885 students from pre-

school to 12th grade. The school system receives strong support

from the community with parents and patrons working

together to provide excellent learning opportunities for our

students.

USD 247 (Cherokee) is a district of 300 square miles, serving

approximately 700 students in grades Pre-K through 12.

Communities within the district are Cherokee, McCune, Weir,

and West Mineral with Cherokee and Weir being

locations for K-8 attendance centers. All centers within

the district are accredited by the Kansas State

Department of Education and provide a great

comprehensive education through academic and

vocational course offerings as well as a wide range of

clubs and athletics.

USD 246 (Arma) serves the communities of Arcadia,

Arma, Franklin and Mulberry. The district has

approximately 550 students from grades Pre-K

through 12 and features HeadStart programs along

with all day Kindergarten. USD 246 offers many

activities from athletics such as baseball and cross

country to organizations such as Scholars’ Bowl.

The area also has some top-notch parochial schools. St. Mary’s

Elementary School and St. Mary’s-Colgan High School are not

tuition-based, but rather are supported by Our Lady of Lourdes

Catholic Church and its stewardship program. Each family who

sends their children to these schools agrees to the principles in

a signed covenant and agrees to maintain a tithe to the parish.

The schools feature an enrollment of over 600 children, along

with over 45 teachers and administrators and a combined

annual parish and school budget of over $3 million. The

elementary school class size is less than 24 and the high school

classes smaller still.

Covenant Harvest Church offers K-12 classes and preschool

classes for children ages 3-5 years old. They are located at 615

South Highway 69 in Pittsburg.

The Southeast Kansas Education Service Center at Greenbush

is the site for unique learning facilities such as the Wm. L.

Abernathy Science Center with biotechnology labs especially

designed to increase student achievement in math and science.

A MediaGlobe Digital Planetarium, rain forest,

PSU/Greenbush Astrophysical Observatory, and Greenbush

Archeological Dig all provide unique learning opportunities.

Camp Discovery is on track to launch in June 2012, hosting

residential campers to enhance educational and youth

development opportunities through experiential learning. The

Greenbush Interactive Distance Learning Network, Virtual

Prescriptive Learning, Migrant Education, and Virtual

Greenbush provide students across the state with curriculum

and learning experiences ranging from algebra,

chemistry/physics, and history to career/technical education

and foreign language instruction.
