Whether one seeks it in making wine, roasting coffee beans, or developing a balanced repertoire of strokes on the tennis court, it can be elusive. Over the long history of the PSU Solo and Chamber Music Series, this has been our yearly goal…one that we hope to achieve as we consider the full palette of extraordinary artists who inhabit the performance world of today. The blend of performers in the 2016-2017 Series is remarkable, one that promises to present a superb mix of colors, repertoire, and artistic personalities. Calling the meeting to order in September will be the brilliant sounds of the celebrated Atlantic Brass Quintet. Widely acclaimed as one of the world’s finest and most versatile brass chamber ensembles, the Atlantic Brass Quintet has performed in 48 of the United States and dozens of countries across four continents. Atlantic specializes in masterful and vibrant presentations of repertoire spanning five centuries and a broad spectrum of styles, from Bach and Brahms to Mehldau and Monk to Brazil and the Balkans. Winner of six international chamber music competitions, the Quintet’s distinctive sound, impeccable ensemble, stunning virtuosity, and warm, inviting stage presence have won praise from scores of critics.

Founded in 1985, the Atlantic Brass Quintet launched its career with a phenomenal string of competition victories over a period of two years. In May 1992, by unanimous decision, the Quintet won the “Premiere Prix” at the International Brass Competition of Narbonne, France, recognized worldwide as the preeminent competition of its kind.

Highlights in the Quintet’s busy concert career include performances at Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, the Fleet Boston Celebrity Series, Tanglewood, and the White House.

Now in its seventh decade, the New York Woodwind Quintet continues to maintain an active concert presence around the world while also teaching and mentoring the next generation of woodwind performers.

One of the oldest continuously active chamber ensembles in the U.S., the Quintet has commissioned and premiered numerous compositions, some of which have become classics of the woodwind repertoire. They include Samuel Barber’s Summer Music, and quintets by Gunther Schuller, Ezra Laderman, William Bergsma, Alec Wilder, William Sydeman, Wallingford Riegger, Jon Deak, and Yehudi Wyner. The Quintet has featured many of these works in recordings for such labels as Boston Skyline, Bridge, New World and Nonesuch.

Unique among all woodwind quintets touring today, the New York Woodwind Quintet is comprised of artists dedicated to chamber music, yet who are individually known as soloists with far-ranging careers. Current NYWQ members are flutist Carol Wincenc, clarinetist Charles Neidich, oboist Stephen Taylor, bassoonist Marc Goldberg, and french hornist William Purvis.

The NYWQ was Ensemble-in-Residence of The Juilliard School 1989-2015.

Hailed by The New York Times as “radiant,” Irish performer Naomi Louisa O’Connell made her professional stage debut starring on London’s West End in Terrence McNally’s Tony Award-winning play Master Class in the role of an aspiring young opera singer opposite Tyne Daly who portrayed the legendary Maria Callas.

In the 2014-15 season, Ms. O’Connell made her German debut at Oper Frankfurt in the title role of a new production of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea. She also debuted at Atlanta Opera as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro. In the 2015-16 season, she made her debut at the Welsh National Opera as Cherubino in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, and as Serafin in the world premiere of Elena Langer’s Figaro Gets A Divorce.

Ms. O’Connell deftly balances her love of opera with that of art song, musical theater and popular song with repertoire ranging from Schumann, Strauss and Ravel to Bernstein, Gershwin and Randy Newman. Recital appearances include her Carnegie

“Their rock star status…is well deserved. Their classically honed technique mixed with grit and all out passionate attack transfixes the audience...” That is how The Sarasota Herald Tribune described SYBARITE5, classical music’s most dynamic new music group.

Comprised of Sami Merdinian and Sarah Whitney, violins; Angela Pickett, viola; Laura Metcalf, cello; and Louis Levitt, bass, Sybarite5 has taken audiences by storm all across the U.S., forever changing

The Donald Sinta Quartet has earned praise from audiences and critics alike for its virtuosic performances, compelling recordings and distinctive repertoire. Named for its mentor, legendary University of Michigan Saxophone Professor Donald Sinta, the quartet’s competition successes include the Alice Coleman Grand Prize at the Coleman Chamber Music Competition and First Prizes in both the Concert Artists Guild Competition and the North American Saxophone Alliance Quartet Competition.

The ensemble has toured widely throughout the United States. International appearances include recitals in Scotland, Paris, France, Geneva and Montreux, Switzerland, and Thessaloniki, Greece, as well as a trip to Japan as one of a select group of ensembles chosen for the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition.

The Donald Sinta Quartet’s repertoire is diverse and includes commissions by today’s emerging composers. As advocates of new music, the quartet runs the National Saxophone Quartet Composition Competition, which selects two new quartet works from up-and-coming composers.

Korean pianist Ko-Eun Yi has earned praise for playing with “élan and fire and a surplus of bravura technique” (Cincinnati Enquirer). She has garnered numerous top prizes in her young career, with successes at the 2010 World Piano Competition in Cincinnati, the 2011 Wideman International Piano Competition in Jackson, Miss., and as winner of the 2013 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition

Recent concerto highlights for Ms. Yi include performances with the Barcelona, Jerusalem, and Boston Symphony Orchestras, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Aspen Concert Orchestra, working with such conductors as Lawrence Foster, Leon Fleisher, and Christopher Wilkins. She toured South America playing Saint-Saëns Concerto No. 2 with the New England Youth Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Benjamin Zander.

the perception of chamber music performance. From the moment their bows hit the strings, this quintet of talented, diverse musicians takes the audience on an exciting ride that engages the senses and redefines the rules.

The Quintet’s debut EP disc Disturb the Silence, featuring music by Radiohead and Piazzolla, plus two original works written for Sybarite5, was released in spring 2011 and quickly reached the top 10 on the Billboard charts.

Highlights of recent seasons included performances on Detroit Symphony’s ‘At the Max’ series, Schubert Club MIX, Celebrity Series of Boston, Ravinia Festival, Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concerts, and appearances at summer festivals such as Aspen and The Chautauqua Institution. The group has also performed on the CBS Early Show and for his Holiness the Dalai Lama.
