Reading Study : The Street dectectives."Get off my boat!" A loud, angry voice cut through the night air. Sizwe turned round quickly to see who

was shouting. It was Mr Nombembe, the owner of a fishing boat. He was a gentle man. What made him

so cross? "Don't you threaten me!“ shouted Mr Nombembe at someone on the quayside.

"You'll be sorry!" the man shouted back. Sizwe noticed that the man limped as if one leg was shorter than

the other Sizwe scurried away. Street kids kept away from trouble. He shivered. The icy wind sneaked

through the rips in his too-small jacket.

Part 2

Suddenly, Sizwe stopped, puzzled. A grey van had just turned into the car park and thee strange thing

was that it had its lights turned off! The boy crouched behind a dustbin. To his surprise, Sizwe spotted the

man who had shouted at Mr Nombembe. The man limped as fast as he could go to the van, and got in.

Sizwe stayed low behind the dustbin and waited.

ANSWERS: After you read

1.The detective is Siswe. You can tell from the way he is hiding in the

background (out of view) when the man with the limp was shouting at

Mr Nombembe.

2. He is called a street detective because he sees himself as someone

who solves crimes. He is a street child who lives on the street, so the

name street detective is therefore doubly suitable.

3. The words that show that it was unusual for Mr Nombembe to be

shouting are "Mr Nombembe was a gentle sort of a man. What made

him so cross?

4. He walked with a limp.

The street detectives KEEP OUT!

Plot The story involves a street child, Sizwe, who

observes a suspicious-looking man with a limp

shouting at Mr Nombembe, the owner of the

fishing vessels. Mr Nombembe is a quiet, kind

man so it is unusual for him to be shouting.

Sizwe hides in the

background so that he can observe what is

going on.

The diary extracts revolve around the activities

and thoughts of a boy being sent to a boarding

school.

Characters The main characters are Sizwe, a street child

detective, Mr Nombembe, the owner of the

fishing

vessels and a threatening man with a limp who

is

behaving suspiciously.

In the extract we have read, the

characters we are introduced to are

Nathaniel Casper Smit, his mother, and

Tendai, a fellow pupil from Zimbabwe.

Setting The story takes place in a small fishing harbour

at

night time.

The story starts with Nathaniel

shopping with his mother for new

clothes for boarding school, and ends

with a description of the boarding

school life

Style of writing Syle is Simple and easy to read. We hear what

Is going on through a narrator who we do not

see,

but who comments in the background.

The style is very informal because it

was written by a young boy who writes

as if he is speaking.
