these Wisconsin Yield Trials

Dairyland’s so-called hybrids are not hybrids, but rather, the

result of two heterozygous populations crossed together.

Alfalfa is a self-incompatible tetraploid, incapable of inbreeding.

No homozygous inbreds means no true alfalfa hybrid.

• Give serious consideration to LH-resistant varieties for eastern half of the U.S. • If grower is not scouting, or is not getting consistent control from spraying, give strong

consideration to the LH-resistant variety. • If grower routinely scouts, sprays as needed, and gets consistent leafhopper control,

consider other varieties to maintain higher overall yield.

Are you getting good leafhopper control by scouting and spraying?

Consider Leafhopper Stopper® Alfalfa Varieties When You Don’t Plan to Scout & Spray

Thresholds for leafhopper control:

For non-LH resistant varieties, spray when leafhopper counts per ten sweeps

exceeds average plant height in inches.

For LH-resistant varieties, spray when leafhopper counts per ten sweeps

exceeds 3X the alfalfa height in inches.

Young plants of LH-resistant varieties are not fully resistant, and should be

sprayed according to the non-LH threshold.

• Pioneer® variety 55H94 is the highest performing leafhopper

resistant-variety available.

• In DuPont Pioneer research comparisons, leafhopper

resistant-varieties outyield non-leafhopper resistant varieties

when leafhoppers exceed threshold but not controlled.

• However, best yields come from controlling leafhoppers and

using top muscle varieties.

Six Days Post-Spray

How will you control weeds during stand establishment?

Consider Pioneer varieties with Genuity® Roundup Ready® technology

University trials average ½ ton per acre advantage for GENRR

weed control system in establishment year.

Can be a strong fit for growers who already use herbicides,

especially beyond establishment year.

Strong fit for commercial alfalfa growers who strive for weed-

free hay.

Spray soon after emergence for null plant take-out.

Rotate herbicides and weed control measures to help avoid

glyphosate resistant weed shift.

Evaluating Stand Productivity Early spring decisions to keep or rotate an alfalfa field can be evaluated using two methods that are proven estimates of forage yield potential.

The plant count method is done at early green-up and provides an early indication of stand survival. When counting plants per square foot, take a one-foot square and randomly throw it around the field. Count the number of plants (crowns) that are alive and healthy. Take four to five counts for every ten acres. Record the plant counts and average for the field.

Stand survival based on plant density and stand age.

Page 21: Pioneer Brand Alfalfa Products - Langfritz Seed · 3 Right Product, Right Acre: Alfalfa 2015 Pioneer® Brand Alfalfa Variety Line-up Variety Segment Description 55Q27 Muscle/Quality

The stem count method is the most reliable, but it forces you to wait several weeks after initial green-up.

•Check stands when the alfalfa plants are four to six inches tall.

•Select four to five random one-foot square sites for every five to ten acres. •Count the number of stems per square foot.

•If an alfalfa field averages more than 55 stems per square foot, it has top yield potential. •Some yield loss may be observed with 40 to 55 stems per square foot.

•If the stem count is below 40 stems per square foot, replacing the stand should be considered.

Be a good manager and keep yield records. Know you’re fields –

rotate to corn or other crops when yield begins to decline

Shown below is an example of winter-heaving

Roots are snapped below soil level and often

do not recover after first cutting

Sparse stand below will yield

poorly…

replace before it gets this sparse!
