Fall has finally arrived!

I love this time of year; the air is crisp and clean, the leaves are falling, its football season, you can wear hoodies, carve pump-kins and drink hot cocoa and apple cider. Who doesn’t enjoy those things? A word of advice from my friend Linus, “Never jump into a pile of leaves with a wet sucker!”

The arrival of fall means one thing in particular for the Pinto Horse Association: The Color Breed Congress is almost here! Being only my second show with the PtHA, I am looking forward to attending, finding my niche, and getting to know more members. If you see me, be sure to say “Hi” and introduce yourself.

As we are busy putting the finishing touches on Color Breed Congress plans, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We are happy to help with any last minute questions. Don’t stress too much as you start your pack-ing; the trade show will be stocked with show sponsors and vendors to supply you with that forgotten hair net or hoof polish.

See ya’ll in Tulsa!

OK The leaves are starting to fall, the air is crisp, and the staff and I are anxious to head to

Tulsa and present another successful horse show. The Color Breed Congress is almost here; are you ready? This year, we are proud to announce that we will be giving away $4,000 in scholarship money - $1,000 to the top overall youth in each breed division. The event will take place November 6-11, 2012. Once again, the Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex in Tulsa, Okla. will be our host.

I am looking forward to seeing the Pinto Family yet again, as well as the other breed associations that will be in attendance. I know the show will be packed with top exhibitors, friendly faces and great competition. Between the Cash Challenge, the Champion of Champion Classes and four different horse shows going on at once, the experience will be one of a kind. I encourage all members to join us in Tulsa for another outstanding event presented by the Pinto Horse Association of America, Inc. See you there!

Happy Trails!

award programs

PINTO PAYS INCENTIVE PROGRAM OBJECTIVE: Provide an incentive program for PtHA Owners/Exhibitors where they can earn money from PtHA ROM points and to encourage members to show at the local PtHA ROM approved shows.

Program Details for 2013: Pinto, Amateur/Pinto unit and Youth/Pinto unit must be nominated each year to participate in program.

There will be six separate divisions: Horse, Pony, Miniature, Breeding Stock (horse, pony, mini), Amateur (horse, pony, mini), Youth (horse, pony, mini),

Nomination Fees: (annual fee) begining in 2013

PtHA will retain 10% on all monies received (including late fees) for Administrative fees, 90% goes into the purse. If a nomination is made after February 1, the 90% will be divided evenly, with half going to the current year purse and half rolling over to be added to the next year’s purse. All points are retroactive to Jan. 1 of current show year.

Each division will compete for funds in that division’s purse only.

Added Money: In 2013, PtHA will match 25% of the actual nominations, up to $10,000.

Grand & Reserve Points and any average judge card points, Pinto World Championship show and Color Breed Congress show ROM points will not count for the “Pinto Pays” program.

Point value: At the end of the PtHA show year, PtHA will calculate the number of PtHA ROM points earned by all nominated Pintos shown in each division. The total number of ROM points earned in each division will be divided into the total purse in that division to determine the monetary value of each ROM point in a division.

Each nominated Pinto will receive a check equal to the number of ROM points earned multiplied by the monetary value of each point.

No refunds or substitutions for any reason.

PtHA will handle all funds and disbursements. Checks will be written after PtHA has audited the year end records and the results are final. Checks will be given out at the PtHA Annual Convention. Any checks not given out at the PtHA Annual Convention will be mailed within 10 days after the Convention has ended. Checks will not be mailed prior to the Convention.

Payment will only be made to the Owner or Lessee of record as documented by PtHA records on December 31 of the program year.

All paid participants that earn at least one ROM Point will receive a pay back.

There are many horses that hold special places in my heart, but one in particular stands out among them all: Copy’s Midnight Warrior. War-rior was the first horse I could really call my own. He is a black Tennes-see Walking Horse that has always had a regal look to him; a horse a princess would ride. I’ve had the joy of owning Warrior for ten years now. We’ve been through many-a-trial together; from show disas-ters to blue ribbons, trail rides, swimming in the pond, going to col-lege and everything in between. Through it all we have established a bond that will last a life time, and I am so thankful he has stayed con-stant in my life, even when everything else around us has changed.

Out of all the special equines I have loved and cared for, there is one who still brings a smile with his memory and his place in my heart. In my early teens, I took weekly lessons at a comprehensive riding facility. There was a wide range of lesson types, horses and jumps for all skill levels and acres of lovely pastures, meadows and trails for everyone. A special part of the riding experience wasthe camaraderie and learning during the tacking up, the lesson it-self and the after care, which allowed us to get to know each horse very well. We all had our special ones, and mine was a TobianoPinto named Ed. We had great communication and our rapport was wonderful. He was patient, gentle, great at carrying out his lessons, just sweet to ride and spend time with. I just loved him. While we rotated horses for fairness & experience, we all bonded with our special horse. I still miss my sweet friend and those years we rode together, he was a great horse, I was lucky to know him.

Growing up around horses means many have left an imprint on my life. One in particular will always be my favorite, Travelin Amigo, a tri-color Paint gelding. I bought Trav as my next all around horse in high school. He could do anything I ever asked of him, from rop-ing, barrels, working cow horse, trail rides, ranch work, hunting and packing, rodeos and parades; he especially loved running poles and goat tying. As he got older he refused to eat Senior feed, hated clowns and loved to play tag. He was the perfect kids horse, but not afraid of a hard days work, and was my best four-legged friend. Trav died in the summer of 2011 at the age of 26, he is greatly missed.

Favorite Equine

My favorite horse? I really can’t pick just one. Two horses in my life have taught me a lot and mean a lot to me. Of course, I have to go with my first ride, PJ. He was a 20-year-old bay gelding that was owned by my grandfather. He taught me two things: the ground is hard and love is all you need to get through the day. The other mount that has a significant place in my heart would be “Talli,” or Tallehina, a 1994 AQHA Buckskin mare. Talli was a love at first sight kinda deal; I saw her and instantly fell in love. She was my first play day horse. I loved her so much that when I went to work for the Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma, I changed my camp name to “Talli.” Both of these horses will be forever remembered in my heart as my first loves.

TrainingGetting ready for larger shows is

not much different than normal train-ing.

“To me, its more of a fine tuning,” said Gary Streator of Streator Train-ing Center in West Jefferson, Ohio. “You’ve shown all year long and lived with small problems from weekend to weekend, but now, especially coming into the Congress, you’ve had some time off. You can use that time to fine tune since it will be tougher than the weekend shows.”

While preparing, it is important not to change your routine too much as you get ready, but instead, to maxi-mize your training time and focus on the classes you intend to enter.

“I don’t want to change much as I need the horses relaxed and confi-dent,” said Mark Smith of Mark Smith Training Center in Findlay, Ohio. “I do encourage my youth and amateur rid-ers to spend extra time with me work-ing on the classes they are planning to show in. Do your homework and be well prepared. When in doubt, prac-tice one more time.”

SuccessSecretsto Show Ring

Getting that blue ribbon can some-times be easier said than done. With the Color Breed Congress right around the corner, what better time then now to make sure you and your horse are prepared? We asked several Pinto trainers to share their favorite tips and tricks to help you get show ring ready.

You know what they say, folks, practice makes perfect! When asked for one word of advice for those pre-paring for Congress, Streator said, “Practice, practice, practice!”

Don’t ForgetEveryone always worries that they

left something behind. Sometimes it is as small as a hair net. Other times it can be a major problem!

“I never real-ize until we get to the show,” Streator said, “But that’s why the vendors are there!”

Lucky for you, the Color Breed Congress Market Place already has a great line up of vendors just for this purpose.

“The right amount of feed for my horses [is something I make sure to remember]” Smith said. “I take all the hay and grain I will need as I do not want to have to buy feed on the road and change their regular diet.”

“Other than the obvious,” Streator said, “Show tack and clothes, you got to remember confidence, you got to take that with ya!”

TravelingFor many, the trip to Tulsa, Okla.

is a long haul. It is important to make sure the horses on board are ready for the road trip, too. Keeping them hy-drated is one of the most important things to remember.

“We give them electrolytes for a few days prior to the trip to encourage them to drink,” Smith said. “We also give them a bran mash before leaving home. At each gas stop we offer the horses water. If a horse does not like to drink when we stop to water them, we will offer them a soupy bran mash and we wet the hay we feed them in the trailer. We work hard to be sure all the horses stay well hydrated the en-tire trip.”

It is important to make sure your

vehicles and trailers are in good shape, too. Always check your tires, oil and make sure your inspections are up-to-date. Make sure the pressure in your spare tires is good and that you have the necessary tools to change a flat, if necessary.

“There was a time when my jack did not have enough hydraulic fluid in it to lift the trailer to change a flat,” Smith said. “I had to wait for help on a busy road in the heat. My lesson from

this and my advice is to always carry extra spare tires and all the tools needed to change the

tire. Tires get very hot when traveling a long distance in the heat and flat tires are inevitable.”

ShowingEvery exhibitor has ex-

perienced that feeling be-fore entering the ring. A little hesitation, a few butterflies and a whole lot of excitement com-bine. Smith said he tries to send riders into the ring on positive and con-fident note so that they can relax and have fun. Isn’t that what showing is all about anyways?

B e -fore enter-ing the ring, I tell them to be patient, relax, and do your best – that’s all you can do, Streator said.

“I like to talk to them about ring etiquette and how to show their horse to their best advantage,” Smith said.

Knowing your horse and enjoy-

ing the time you spend with them can often help more than anything else. It’s a trust thing – if you trust them, they trust you, and then you can both give it all you got.

When asked for his “Secret to Show Ring Success,” Smith said that determining the strengths and weak-nesses of each horse and showing to the horse’s strengths, as well as doing his homework at home, helps him be more prepared and allows the shows to be relaxed and stress free.

“To me, its just another horse show,” Streator said. “Just better competition. You just got to be ready. Spend more time getting ready since you have the time to do that.”

There you have it, straight from the trainer’s mouth. As you prepare for Congress, keep it simple, but be sure to do your homework and spend that little bit of extra time that will get

you further in the long run. And most importantly, relax

and have fun!

Treating your Pinto for ulcers? De-worming? Curious to learn more about the products you are putting in your Pinto’s mouth?

Now there’s help! PtHA’s corpo-rate sponsor, Merial, has launched a website to provide you, the owner, more information about just what you are actually giving your Pinto. The site is equinedrugfacts.com.

Owners can feel more confident about their Pinto’s health needs by learning more about what FDA-ap-proval of a drug really means and how unapproved drugs may be putting their

equines at risk.“There are literally thousands of

products available to horse owners via their veterinarian, on the Internet, at horse shows and through various re-tail outlets,” said Beckie Peskin, Senior Product Manager, Equine Marketing for Merial. “While manufacturers may be making claims about what these products can do, it’s vitally important that Pinto owners do some homework and make sure they are using products that have been proven to be pure, safe and effective.”

At the new website, horse owners can learn more about the differences between brand-name, generic and il-

legally manufactured drugs, as well as how nutritional supplements fit into the picture. The site also in-cludes comprehensive informa-tion about why knowing the dif-ference between these products is important and the value and peace of mind that FDA regula-tion adds.

“We always recommend Pinto owners consult their veterinarians when se-lecting products for their horses,” Peskin said. “But owners also have a re-sponsibility to be knowl-edgeable about the products they are using. If they don’t treat their horses with products that have been prov-en to be safe and ef-fective, the horses

can potentially continue to suffer and the owners may be wasting time and money.”

Pinto owners should be cautious when purchasing any drug as many are not FDA approved and often make claims that have not been proven.

Be sure and check out Merial’s new website, www.equinedrugfacts.com, before you give your Pinto any-thing else. The little time it takes could very well save you lots of money and treatment time in the long run.

Represent your state at national PtHA functions! Be a Youth Director! As a Youth Director, you will be able to represent your state at national meetings in addition to informing the youth in your area of national activities. This is also the only way to be eligible to become an officer of PtHYA! To become a Youth Director, simply fill out the application found on www.pinto.org/youth and return it to the PtHA office. Applications will be reviewed and applicants will be notified in January of acceptance. The number of Youth Directors allowed per state corresponds to the number allowed for PtHA Board of Directors. To see how many directors are allowed in your state, check the youth page of www.pinto.org. In the case where more members from the same state apply than are allowed, the director will be chosen on PtHA involvement and potential service.

To make it easier for you to attend, the Pinto Youth Leadership Conference will be held in conjunction with the Pinto World Championship next year! Put it on the calendar now, and then register this winter when the form is posted on the web. Gather up a group from your charter and have a road trip, or get on Facebook and make some new friends before you get there!

Don’t forget to renew your amateur card as well as your individual membership. Do this early to avoid the day-before-the-show rush. You can check the PtHA Rulebook if you need details on what qualifies as an amateur with the association. FRIENDS AND FUN
