t might be one small step on a catwalk,but for Karratha student
and aspiringmodel Lisa-Marie Rodd it will be a gianteap.
The Karratha High School student nextmonth ies to the US to walk
the runwayor prominent Australian designer Ruth
Tarvydas at New York Fashion Week.
New to modelling, Lisa-Marie won
ast years amateur Pilbara Girl beautypageant in which local
girls participate inconfdence boosting public speaking andmodelling
programs and has only takenhe occasional ashion job since.
So the transition rom the Pilbarased dirt runways to modelling
in ront o
more than 400 celebrities at the AltmanBuilding in one o the
worlds mostmportant ashion shows is likely to be anexciting and
daunting challenge.
But she said the trip organised bycommunity groups Roebourne
Girls FXAcademy and the Luke Adams Foundationwas deliberately
designed to broaden herhorizons.
This is the frst time I have travelledoverseas and I am excited
to be going toNew York and participating in FashionWeek, Lisa-Marie
said.
[But] I am also hoping to developmy leadership skills urther so
that I canbe a role model or other girls in thecommunity when I
come home.
Lisa-Maries New York trip will be theecond time girls rom the
Roebourne FX
Academy have visited the Big Apple.
The academy uses un artistic pursuits,uch as song, dance, drama
and modelling,
as a way to address issues within the localcommunity such as
sel-esteem, sexual andwomens health, drug and alcohol abuse,healthy
liestyles and uture direction.
That means Lisa-Marie will also meetwith school students in
Brooklyn and theBronx as part o a cultural exchange.
I am looking orward to meetingother students my own age and
seeinghow dierent their lives are to mine in
he Pilbara, she said.
Brendan Parker rom the Luke AdamsFoundation said the idea o the
nine-daytrip was to show Lisa-Marie the widerworld in the hope she
will gain inspirationand come back and share that experiencewith
local girls.
And with Lisa-Marie to also do a photoshoot in New York or the
SKYE andStaghorn brands beore coming back andparticipating in the
Perth Fashion Festival,so much the better i the trip helpedlaunch
her career.
From our point o view it is aboutproviding opportunities to
young peoplelike her, and i she can grab that and runwith it that
is brilliant, Brendan said.
There is nothing wrong with thesegirls going away to chase their
dreamsas long as they retain that connection totheir local
community and come back andshare what they have learned and
inspireother kids.
Lisa-Marie will walk the runways in NewYork on September 7 and
in Perth onSeptember 14.
She will also return to the Pilbara withdesigner Ruth Tarvydas
and leadingIndigenous model Samantha Harris onSeptember 16-17.
