Tired Dog An older, tired-looking dog wanderedinto my yard. I could tell from his collarand well-fed belly that he had a home andwas well taken care of. He calmly cameover to me; I gave him a few pats on hishead. Then he followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up inthe corner and fell asleep. An hour later he went to the door andI let him out. The next day he was back, greeted mein my yard, walked inside and resumed hisspot in the hall and again slept for aboutan hour. This continued off and on for sev-eral weeks. Curious, I pinned this note to his col-lar: "I would like to find out who theowner of this wonderful, sweet dog is andask if you are aware that almost everyafternoon your dog comes to my house fora nap.” The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his collar:"He lives in a home with 6 children, 2under the age of 3. He's trying to catch upon his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?"

Murphy stood on thestoop of the apartmentbuilding and grinnedthinking of the pewter
dish he'd sold to an unquestioningantique dealer in another town."Yes," he answered his landlord'squestion. "I had a very nice trip." Eli stepped on his ladder andresumed slapping green paint onthe trim around the front door. "It'sa nice time of year for travel." "I saw Jean Lambson loadingher car this morning. Is she mov-ing?" Murphy hoped she wasn't. Ofall the people who'd lived in theapartment over his, she was thequietest. "Nah. Just a little overnighter. She's going up to..." Murphy pretended to listen, buthe was thinking about the antiquesnuff box on Jean's mantle. He'dseen it at the party she threw justafter she moved in.
The silver box was smallenough to slide into apocket. He'd consideredtaking it then, but theparty was winding downwhen he spotted it.
He wasn't comfortable takingthings when there were only a fewpeople around. One of them mightsee him. He preferred to do hisslight of hand when he could actquickly and disappear in a crowd. Eli, finished with the doorframe, stepped down the ladder.“Lunch break. Can you give me ahand with the ladder? I have tomove it around to the back of thebuilding. It‘s too long and heavy tohaul in and out of the basement.” Surprised, Murphy simply nod-ded and was soon carrying the backend of the extension ladder.
“We’ll leave it here,” the supersaid as he laid the ladder on theground against the building.“Thanks for giving me a hand.” “No problem.” Murphy smiledas he looked up at Jean’s apart-ment. During her party, Jean com-plained about the broken latch onher bedroom window. With the lad-der, getting up to it would be asnap. Jean's cat Fluffy was the onlyobstacle. It wouldn't do to haveFluffy winding around his feet, tripping him up as he tiptoedthrough the apartment. But thatproblem could be solved easily.Murphy stopped at a pet store andpicked up a small ball with a bell init. At two a.m. Murphy left hisapartment, went out the building’sfront door, rounded the corner, andsidled up the alley. A conveniently
located streetlight made it easy tofind the ladder and set it up. Heclimbed past his own bedroom win-dow, opened Jean's, and steppedinside. Fluffy greeted Murphy with afriendly meow and rubbed againsthis leg. Murphy encouraged the catto follow him, then he threw theball into the kitchen. The jinglingbell inside the ball drew the catafter it. Murphy eased in the oppo-site direction. The snuff box easily slid intohis pocket. He fingered her tall sil-ver candlesticks, but decided they’dbe hard to carry on the ladder. As

Serious Shopping I was browsing in a sou-venir shop when the man nextto me struck up a conversation. Just as he was telling me that hiswife was getting carried away withher shopping, a brief power shortagecaused the lights to flicker overhead. "Ah," he sighed, "that must beher checking out now."

Ithink cats understand a lotmore human speak thanthey let on. How else canyou explain the phenomenathat cats live up (or down)to their names?
I once lived with a cat namedPandora. Never again will I namean animal after a goddess whounleashed all those evils upon theearth. Pandora was very anti-socialand if she had been human proba-bly would have been a subject foran episode of Criminal Minds. I got her as a kitten so she hadnever been abused and was pam-pered and spoiled for her entireexistence (she lived to be sixteen inspite of being diabetic for most ofher life).
But she used her teethand claws as methodsof expressing herdispleasure. My
daughter nicknamedher Psycho Cat.
It's not that she never showedaffection. She would on occasionsnuggle up to me and ask to be pet-ted. Of course I would oblige.Three pats later she would bare herteeth and bite. She had her limits asto the physical contact she wouldallow and three pets was it. She would only warm up toHeather when she brought chicken
fingers home as a snack. Then shewas Pandora's best friend - until thechicken fingers were gone. Thenthe teeth and claws came out. I remember house sitting a catnamed Diablo for a friend. Hemade Pandora look like a modelcitizen of the cat world. Heclimbed curtains, pounced onpassers-by from the top of therefrigerator and shredded most ofmy friend's furniture. He wouldrun from one end of the house tothe other as if the demons of hellwere chasing him. On the opposite end of thespectrum, another friend had abeautiful Persian she named Angel.True to her name, she never causeda moment's distress. She was dain-ty and obedient and I could swearshe even asked permission to shed. On the other hand, Pandorawas certainly anything but boringand her antics often left me dou-bled over in laughter. Maybethat's why she acted up; catsdon't like to be laughed at. Shealso willingly submitted to thetwo needles a day I had to giveher for eight years for her dia-betes. She never turned a hair atthat. The cat I live with now iscalled Zoey which means "life"in Greek. It's an apt name for her asshe enjoys every bit of life thatcomes her way with a sunny dispo-sition and a gentle touch. I know there are probably calmcats out there called TasmanianDevil and cats from the dark sidecalled Lovey, but I have no inten-tions of taking a chance. The nextcat I share my home with will becalled Sunshine or Meadow Mist orPrincess. No, scratch that last one; catsdon't need any encouragement tothink of themselves as royalty. The strange thing is, that of allthe cats I ever lived with, I think Imiss Pandora the most.

Taste Test The Pharmacist cameover, smiled, and asked ifhe could help me. I said, "Yes!Could you please taste this forme?" Seeing a senior citizen, thePharmacist went along. He tookthe spoon, put a tiny bit of theliquid on it, put it on his tongueand swilled it around. Then, with a stomach-churn-ing look on his face, he spat it out
on the floor andbegan coughing. When he finally wasfinished, I lookedhim right in the eyeand asked, “Now,does that tastesweet to you?"
The Pharmacist,shaking his head back
and forth with a venomous lookin his eyes yelled, “HECK NO!!!" I said, " Well that's a realrelief! My doctor told me tohave a pharmacist test my urinefor sugar!"Please Send An elderly fisherman wrotethe following to a catalog compa-ny: "Please send me one of thosegasoline engines for my boat youshow on page 438, and if it's anygood, I'll send you a check." In a short time he receivedthe following reply: "Please sendcheck. If it's any good, we'll sendthe engine.

Itwas another beautifulfall day and even thoughI had piles of paperworkon my desk I just had toget out of the office.
As a Conservation Officer post-ed in busy central Alberta it waseasy to pick a patrol location. Ashort, 30 minute drive from myoffice in Red Deer was GlenifferReservoir Provincial RecreationArea. This PRA had several camp-grounds and day use areas locatedaround the reservoir. The area wasknown for its many water activi-ties, including fishing. I drove into Dickson Point onthe north- west shore to begin mypatrol. Dickson Point has a smallcampground of 18 un-serviced sitesbut its main drawing attraction isthe separate water body know asDickson Trout Pond. As I expected, there werenumerous small boats out on thetrout pond and many fishermenalong the shore. I followed thegravel road down a small inclinepast the hand boat launch andparked my patrol truck. When I got out of the truck Icouldn’t help but admire the beauti-ful scenery with the calm water.Surrounding the lake were treeshosting a myriad blend of fall col-ors. In the distance I could makeout the Rocky Mountains etchingupward against the blue sky. I was quickly brought back tomy duties as I watched a gentlemanapproaching me with a fishing rodin his hand. To be correct, hewasn’t really approaching me, Ijust happened to be in his way. Hehad a determined look on his faceand a very purposeful walk. When he came alongside me Isaid hello in a pleasant voice andhe gave me a look as if to say“Can’t you see, I’m busy.”) Hestopped and I asked him how hewas doing. He replied he was doing
fine. I then said I noticed he had afishing rod and did he plan ongoing fishing. Here’s how the rest of the con-versation went: “Yes, I just carried my boatdown and that’s exactly what I planon doing.” “Well sir, if you don’t mind I’dlike to see your fishing licence.” “What? I don’t need a cottonpicking fishing licence.” “Why is that sir?” “Cause I’m too old to have toworry about one. I’m 76 yearsold!”
“Sir, I don’t mind saying youdon’t look a day over 60. Soplease, show me some identifica-tion. I also have to caution you thatlying to a Peace Officer is a seriousoffence.” Well, if he wasn’t antsy before,he sure was now. With steam blow-ing from his ears and nose hereached back and pulled a worn outwallet from his pocket. He quicklyopened it, yanked out his Albertadrivers licence and thrust it into myoutstretched palm. “There, look at it!” Sure enough, this gentlemanwas telling the truth, he was 76years old. If you’re an Alberta resi-dent and older than 65, you don’trequire an angling licence. “Sir I want to thank you forcooperating with me and I have torepeat myself by saying you lookmuch younger than you actuallyare.”
With that he reached out, grabbed his licence andgave me a steely look. Then he said something I thought for sure was
a mistake.
“You know what? I can takeyou.” Now here is a man, 76 yearsold, maybe 5 foot 3 inches tall andall of 130 pounds. I was 6 feet tall, about 185 pounds, quite a bityounger with a full duty belt onand he’s challenging me? I could just see the headlines, “Conservation Officer PepperSprays and Handcuffs SeniorFisherman.” Or even worse, “Senior Fisherman WhupsConservation Officers Butt.” The Use of Force form I wouldhave to fill out was going to beinteresting. “Sir, I understand you may be alittle upset right now but it’s a pret-ty nice day and I’m sure you wantto get out fishing.” “The fish will still be there, let’s get this over with.” He then leaned his fishing rodup against my truck, rolled up thesleeve of his right arm and walkedaround to the front of my truck. Ilooked around and sure enough, wehad a small group of other fisher-men watching this interaction. Then it came to me, he wasn’tgoing to beat me up, he wanted toarm wrestle me.

With our arms firmly plantedon the hood of my truck the battlebegan. With muscles burning andbeads of sweat falling, our handsremained locked, as if in mortalcombat. Every inch he gained Ifought back with tendon’s scream-ing. My gains were quickly lost.Who was this pint sizedSuperman? Maybe it was the poor break-fast I had that morning. Maybe itwas the sun in my eyes. Or the factthis sinewy little robot was stand-ing on his tip toes. Anyway thebattle was soon over as I stared indisbelief as my aching arm driftedslowly onto the hood of my truck. With a short laugh, the victorslapped me on the shoulder andturned away. As I stood there shaking thelactic acid out of my right arm Iwatched him head down to hisboat, fishing rod dangling over hisshoulder. He seemed to be standinga little taller and there was defi-nitely more spring in his step.

Pigeon Lake PainterA Pigeon Lake painter by thename of Skipper Drover, whilenot a brilliant scholar, was agifted portrait artist. Over a short number of years, his fame grew and soon peoplefrom all over the country werecoming to him for his paintings. One day, a beautiful youngwoman pulled up to his house in astretch limo and asked Skipper ifhe would paint her in the nude. This was the first time anyonehad made this request and it hadSkipper a bit perturbed. The beauti-ful lady told him that money wasno object; in fact, she was willingto pay up to $50,000.
Not wanting to get into troublewith his wife, Skipper asked thelady to wait while he went in thehouse and conferred with his
wife Rose. In a few minutes he returnedand said to the lady, "It’d be mypleasure to paint yer portrait, mis-sus. The wife says it's okay. I'llpaint ya in the nude, but I have taleave my socks on so I have a place to wipe my brushes!"

Achilly breeze blewthrough the open win-dow, but MarthaMcGuire didn't move an
inch. Slumped over her laptop, shehad written her last mystery novel. My partner, Bart, pointed at abloodstained paperweight. "Thatlooks like the weapon, Gavin." I nodded, and studied the rest ofthe room. An overturned coffeemug beside the victim's left elbowhad spilled its contents onto theotherwise immaculate ceramic tilefloor. I searched outwards, all theway to the window, but saw noth-ing else, not even a scuff mark.Hopefully, forensics would havebetter luck. A gust of wind hit me in theface, and I stepped back. "Bart, while forensics goes over the room
let's see if we can jog our witness’smemory about the man she sawclimbing out this window." Ellen Grimes, the victim'swriter friend, shook her head fromher seat in the living room. “I neversaid it was a man.” “You mean it was a woman?”Bart asked. “I don’t know.” "Why don't you start at thebeginning," I suggested. Ellen wiped away a tear. "EveryTuesday evening Martha and Imeet to discuss writing. Buttonight, she didn't answer the door. The doorbell wasn’t working, andthe rain was coming down so hard Ifigured she hadn't heard my knock.I tried the door, found it unlockedand headed for the den. I calledout, then caught a glimpse of some-one going out the window. Then...Isaw Martha."
"This person climbing out thewindow,” said Bart.“Man...woman—” "All I caught was a blur."
Ellen sobbed. “Who would want to hurt Martha?”
“Good question,” I said. “Doesshe have any children who’ll inher-it? Or a bitter ex-husband?" "She never married. She—Wait!Giles Torland." "Who?" "Martha’s boyfriend. I don’tknow what she saw in him. He

drinks too much andwas always asking herfor money." "And today Marthatold him they were fin-ished," came a voicefrom the entryway. Awoman dressed ina robe and whitetennis shoesadvanced into theroom with a uniformedpoliceman by her side. "This is Betty Hunt, the housekeeper," thepoliceman said. "Livesabove the detachedgarage." Bart and Iexchanged glances, then I swung on Ellen. "Why didn'tyou tell us someone else lived onthe premises?" I-I'm sorry," she stammered. She stared at the housekeeper."Betty, I thought you were out oftown visiting your daughter?" "Came back early," the house-keeper said. "Returned a littlebefore 7:30 tonight at the height ofthe storm. That's when Martha toldme she'd broken up with Mr.Torland." “You saw the victim at 7:30?"Bart asked. "Yes." Her face suddenly paled."But I didn't kill her!" “Of course you didn’t,” Ellensoothed. “What did Ms. McGuire sayexactly?” I asked. “That she’d dumped Mr.
Torland earlier today.”"There wasn't anyone else
in the house when you sawher tonight?" I asked."Not that I know of.Martha did say Ellen wouldbe coming later, and that Iwouldn't be needed. So Iwent to my quarters andtook a hot bath. When I
looked out around 8:15 therain had stopped and severalpolice cars were pulling into thedrive."
I was about to ask her forTorland's address when adisheveled-looking man withliquor on his breath wasescorted our way. GilesTorland, it turned out.
“Why're all you cops here?" heasked, his speech slightly slurred. "Martha McGuire's been mur-dered," Bart said. "But maybe youalready knew that?" "Martha murdered?" Torlandglared at the two women. "You!"he yelled at Ellen. "And you!" hesaid to Betty. "Which of you killedher?" The housekeeper's handsclenched. "You're drunk," Ellen snapped. "What if I am? You were jeal-ous of Martha, even accused her ofstealin' your ideas." "That's not true." Torland swung on the house-keeper. "And you're a thief. Marthacaught you taking things." Hemoved menacingly toward thewoman. Bart and I quickly blocked
his way and led him back outside. "Hold this man in a squad car,"I ordered an officer. I looked atBart. "Let's see what forensics hasturned up." The news wasn't good. "Exceptfor the spilled coffee the room'sclean," a detective told us. “Andthere’s no useful fingerprints on thepaperweight or window frame." "How about outside?" Bartasked. "With all that rain earlierthere's gotta be footprints." "Nope. Not a trace. Rainmust've washed them away." Bart scowled. "Looks like we'reat a dead end, Gavin." "On the contrary," I replied, "Ithink I know who our killer is." Bart stared. "Who?" "Ellen Grimes," I said. "Shesaid it was raining when shearrived and that she saw someonegoing out the window. However, ifthat were true the rain would haveblown into the room. But the tilewas dry. That means no one wentout the window during the stormwhich means Ellen was lying." We confronted Ellen and shebroke down. She'd killed Martha ina fit of angry writer's jealousy. Bythe time she'd opened the windowto fit her story the rain had stopped.
* * * How many . . . politically-correct peopledoes it take to screw in alight-bulb?"“Look, I don't know -

Laine Ferguson set her traydown on the cafeteria tableand slid in beside her fel-low teacher, Dana Powell.
She hadn’t realized she’d sigheduntil Dana gave her a sympatheticsmile and said “Tough class?” “It’s not the kids I’m havingproblems with. Well, maybeDennis who seems determined tolive up to his “Menace” nickname.Other than that, they’re a greatclass.” “What’s the problem, then?Come on, tell all. This is Dana theConfessor you’re talking to.” “It’s nothing really. I’m justrunning out of volunteers for myFriday Career Days. I had apolicewoman all lined up and shewent into premature labour and hadto cancel. Then I had a construc-tion carpenter until they went outon strike and he doesn’t think itwould be appropriate to do careerday while negotiating.” She sighedagain. “It’s more difficult whenyou’re new to town and don’t havetoo many contacts.” Dana quirked an eyebrow. “Oh, I wasn’t asking for help.Well, yes, maybe I was. Do youhave any suggestions?” “I’ve given you a lot of sugges-tions which you’ve consistentlyignored.’ “I’m not talking about myromantic life. I don’t need sugges-tions there. I’m talking aboutschool life.” “You don’t need suggestions?Hmmm. When was your last datenow?” Laine glared at her and Dana, although an optimistic meddler bynature knew when to shut up andswitch the topic to more mundanesubjects such as lesson plans andcurriculum guides.
~ ~ ~ Laine pulled up in her drivewayand as usual gave in to a little thrill
as she stood for a moment lookingat her new house. It was the firsthome she had ever owned.
So far, she’d found ita bit lonely.
Not enough to let Dana set her upthough. That would be too embar-rassing. She jumped as she heardcrunches in the gravel, and thenrealized they were next door. Shetook one hand away from her gro-ceries to wave and got a blazingsmile in return.
It was his usual response whenhe saw her, but that was as far astheir greetings went – no chats overthe fence, no invitations for a drink.

She noticed what abeautiful garden he hadand was tempted to askhis advice on some of herfailures but backed downwith the words unspoken. Maybe he would thinkshe was using it as anexcuse to start a relation-ship. Well, he wouldn’tbe far wrong. Not thatshe was ready to start arelationship – she wasstill cooling off after herlast disaster.
But more thanonce, that smilehad figured
prominently in oneof her dreams.
She opened her door, bent down to scratchBimbo’s ears and got awelcoming purr inresponse. “I wish every-one was as easy to pleaseas a cat.” She muttered. She didn’t see muchof Dana at school nextday; they were all toobusy with a track event, but she got a call fromher that evening withgood news. She had twocareer day visitors linedup for next Friday- a fire-man and a horticulturist. Laine’s sensorstwitched at the “fireman”.“You’re not still trying..” “Don’t be ridiculous.I’ve decided to give upon your social life. He’sa friend of mine and hap-pily married.” Laine relaxed.“Who’s the other one?” “A horticulturist.”Laine pictured a middleaged man with artistichands, a slight stoop andbifocals. He’d make agreat contrast to the fire-man. She relaxed.
The fireman on Fridaywas a hit with the kids.He asked Laine on theway out to attend a neigh-borhood barbeque thenext week. The following Fridayshe was waiting by thedoor for her horticulturistwhen as a voice behindher said. “Sorry, I hopeI’m not late.” Lainelooked up into those star-tling blue eyes of herneighbor. “I had to make adelivery on the way andhad truck problems.”When she didn’t reply hesaid “I’m Blaine Goodall, your next door neighbor.Dana said you neededsomeone for Career Day.” Laine realized she hadto say something immedi-ately to disguise the factthat her jaw had dropped, but all she could managewas, “Thank you forcoming.” Then sheadded. “Now I knowwhy your garden alwayslooked so perfect. I wasgoing to ask youradvice.” “Ask me anything youlike tomorrow night. Ijust met Mark on the wayout and he said you’recoming to his and Julia’sbarbeque.” He looked ather for confirmation. “Definitely.” She was
thinking: ‘Everyoneknows everyone here.Aren’t small townsgreat?’ Then out loud: “Let’sgo face the inquisition” asshe led him into her class.– The END

Cassie Gilman stoppedher car on the graveldrive, wishing herhands would stop shak-ing. Before her sat the
tiny cottage, the lake gleamingbeyond. The scene was charming,or would have been if Daniel werewith her. She opened her door and gotout, stretching. The drive had beenlong. Carrying her luggage, shetrudged toward the house. He carried me over this thresh-old, she thought, swallowing hard.
Since their divorce, Cassiehad avoided the lake, where they’d spent lazysummer days during the ten years of their marriage.
“And one Christmas,” she saidaloud, setting her bags down.Squeezing her eyes shut, sheblocked the memory, but not beforea tear slipped down her cheek.
~ ~ ~ With a dusting rag in one handand cleaning spray in the other,Cassie went from room to room, intent on eliminating cobwebs, bothliteral and figurative. The scent oflemon replaced mustiness as shehummed only with the radio play-ing in the other room. She was singing aloud when shereached the living room. Her gazetraveled out the window to the cot-tage next door. A red pickup truck was parkedin the drive. In the backyard, a but-terscotch and white dog slept, hisnose resting on crossed paws. Someone had purchased theHastings’ place, vacant for yearsafter old Mr. Hastings died. Rumorhad it his only son wouldn't sell the
place, but he never bothered tomaintain it, either. The “for sale”sign she'd seen on her last visit wasgone. “Nothing ever stays the same,”she said to the empty room. The tune on the radio came to anend breaking Cassie’s reverie. She’d meet the new people soonenough, and there was still the bed-room to clean.
~ ~ ~ Cassie stepped onto the backporch, mug of coffee in hand.Under the moon, the lake dancedwith diamonds as she crossed theyard to the pier. Settling onto the bench Danielhad built, she sighed. Water lappedin gentle rhythm against the pier’sfootings. Crickets serenaded some-where close at hand. A screen doorcreaked open, slapped shut. “Stay in the yard, Barnaby,” aman's voice said. Someone was letting the dogout. Hearing the jangle of tags onhis collar, Cassie watched the bigfellow move across the grass.Sensing her, the dog paused, look-ing up. “Hello there, Barnaby,” Cassiesaid, issuing an invitation withoutrealizing it. The dog trotted from his yard tohers, to the pier, to the bench, histoenails clicking across the wood. “Oh, you’re going to be in trou-ble,” Cassie said, stretching out onehand for Barnaby to sniff. He gazed at her with big, darkeyes, then licked Cassie's hand inapproval, before jumping up besideher on the bench, yawning. The screen door banged. “Barnaby?” The dog glanced over, in nohurry to go home. “He’s here,” Cassie called.“With me.” She could see her new neighborin the porch light and detected hissurprise. He probably hadn’t real-
ized the cottage next door wasinhabited again. In the light fromhis porch, she could see the newneighbor. Tall, trim, middle-aged, he worejeans and a cotton shirt with thesleeves rolled up. Cassie waved, watching as heambled over. “I see you’ve already met mydog.” He gestured at the animalstretched out at Cassie’s side.

“Yes." Cassie patted the dog.“Please, join us." He hesitated then settled ontothe bench, his long, rangy formbending gracefully. “I’m Cassie Gilman.” Shereached over the dog to shake hishand. “Pete Hastings. Pleased tomeet you.” Up close, she noted fair hair, dark eyes and creases near his eyes. “Hastings?" She knit her brow."As in Old Man Hastings?” Pete laughed. “Yep, my father.Owned this place over fifty years.”The only son, the one who couldn’tbe bothered to paint or mow, looked off over the silent water. “I haven’t been up here in awhile,” Cassie said. “The last timeI came, there was a ‘for sale’ signnext door.” Pete pressed his lips togetherthen shrugged. “That turned out tobe a bad idea. Dad had just passedaway. It was ages since I’d visited.I didn’t think I wanted this place.Lots of memories from childhood. Not all pleasant, but most were.” Cassie nodded. “Even pleasantmemories can be hard to dealwith,” she said. Aware of hisglance, she smiled weakly, adding,“Divorce.” “I’m sorry.” “But you changed your mind?"she said. "About the house?” Pete gazed at the cottage. Treesshaded the back. The front yardwas toward the water. With thelights from inside holding off thedarkness, it looked cozy and invit-
ing. “Yes.” He turned back to her.“I’d had an offer and no reason notto take it.” He paused.
“Until I came back hereto clear the house out, and
it all flooded back, you know?”
She nodded. She'd been replay-ing her own ancient history in herhead all day. “The clincher, though, waswhen Barnaby—who had neverbeen to the cottage—made a bee-line for Dad’s favorite chair. WhenI was a kid, we had a dog calledBlintzes. She and Dad had anongoing battle for that chair. Sheused to sleep there every eveninguntil Dad chased her off.Sometimes,” he said with asmile,“he'd let her win." Cassie smiled at the image.“And that was your turning point.” “Yeah. I realized that this placeand the memories are too special toabandon.” His words seemed a quiet echoof what Cassie had been sensing allday. Her memories of life withDaniel were painful, but precious. The past was past. The futurebeckoned. There was room forboth in her life. Pete rested a hand on Barnaby’sback. “So,” he concluded, “I’mhere for the summer.” “Me, too,” Cassie said as theireyes met. “Me, too.”

LED Lighting SolutionsA standard incandescent bulb produces only 5% light and
95% heat! LED bulbs are significantly more efficient producing85% light and only 15% heat. To add more light to your space, switching out your incandescent bulbs for an LED can give you thedesired effect and drastically reduce energy consumption.
With incandescent lighting you had a choice of yellow or yellow.LEDs offer pure, natural and warm light options. It’s a matter of personal preference. For example, using the warm light is best forreading at night because it’s easier to fall asleep afterward.
Changing to LED usually requires only bulb replacement. LEDstrip lighting is also a popular choice and can be customized tolength for lighting projects under cabinets, counters, awnings, boats, canopies, decks, boat houses and so on.
If you are looking to add more light, increase efficiency or simplymodernize your RV living or outdoor space, LED lighting is the solution! For more info. visit www.technosolveinc.ca

he was leaving, he saw her dia-mond earrings on the coffee tableand scooped them up. He shook hishead at her carelessness. Sheshouldn't leave valuables layingaround. Unfortunately that’s howshe was. During the party shebragged about her possessions, including a lot of expensive elec-tronic equipment. None of thatinterested him. Big things were toohard to handle. As he left the living room, anoise from the bathroom made himfreeze. A quick flurry of voices, like a whispered argument fol-lowed. The voices ended and a cardoor slammed. Murphy relaxed. The voices must have echoed upfrom outside. Murphy left as he came, replaced the ladder, crept down thealley, sauntered around the block, and reentered the building by thefront door. He shut the door to his apart-ment and sighed as the thrill of vic-tory shivered up his spine. A thump on the ceiling startledhim. Then something crashedagainst the floor ofJean's apartment. He’d left the ball!Fluffy must be romping all over theapartment after it. Would anyone beable to trace it to him? No, hedecided. Nothing could link him tothe toy. Besides, don't all cats have
jingle balls? Murphy pulled the snuff boxfrom his pocket. He opened it andfrowned at the stuff inside. Hestirred it with his finger while hetried to figure out what it was.Maybe it was some kind of pot-pourri. He closed the lid and turnedthe box over. A smile spread acrosshis face as he examined the bottom. The craftsman's mark indicated itwas more valuable than he thought. Something heavy hit the floorupstairs. Murphy shook his head. When Jean got home, she'd find aterrible mess. Murphy chuckled. She might not miss the snuff box orher earrings for months. Someone rapped on his door. He scanned the living room fora place to hide the snuff box. Heshoved it behind his couch andcalled, “Who is it?” "Jean from upstairs." Murphy arranged his face toplay the part of a friendly neighbor. He opened the door. “You’re back!
How nice.” Jean stood in the hall holding awiggling mass of fur.
Fluffy jumped from herarms as Jean flashed a police badge.
A uniformed cop stepped up behindher. "We set a trap for the burglaryring that’s been working the neigh-borhood," Jean explained. "I'm sureyou heard the commotion as wetook him into custody. But, as youknow, he wasn't the only one whotook the bait." Murphy blinked. He couldn’tbelieve this was happening. He hadno choice but to act innocent. "Idon't know what you're talkingabout." Jean explained as the coppulled out handcuffs. "We watchedyou from the bathroom and sawyou take the snuff box and ear-rings. We let you get away becausewe were after bigger fish. I wasalso sure we'd retrieve the evi-dence." She nodded toward thecouch. Fluffy swatted the snuffbox from behind the couch. "Fluffyloves his cat nip."

Dead trees seldom getthe respect theydeserve. Consideredby most people to beunsightly, dead trees
(called snags) are felled by thosewanting to “clean up the forest.”But snags are not only interesting, they play a critical role in ensuringforest biodiversity. A dead treeactually sustains more life than alive one! When I wander the woods, Ipay special attention to snags.Birds often perch on their barebranches to sing, rest or hawk forinsects. The trunks of dead treesare also interesting, often decoratedwith artistic patterns left by thetravels of bark beetles or full ofvarious sized holes drilled out bywoodpeckers and other cavity exca-vators. Woodpeckers, chickadees andnuthatches are the carpenters of ourforests, excavating nest and roostcavities in snags. While these exca-vators will sometimes reuse a cavi-ty for more than one year, they usu-
ally create new cavities eachspring. Their old holes are thenavailable as ‘second-hand’ foresthomes. Bats, squirrels and severalspecies of secondary cavity-nestingbirds will take up residence in thesepre-built condos. When I encounter a treesporting a large cavity, I usually tap lightly on the trunk to see if anyone’s home.
On a few occasions, I’ve beenlucky enough to have stirred up asaw-whet owl or a flying squirrel. A few years ago, Jim Potter ofDelburne noticed pileated wood-peckers excavating a large nestingcavity in a tall aspen snag near oneof his ponds. He kept watch on thecomings and goings at the cavity. Ithas proven to be a very popularabode over the years! The story of this cavity beginswith a pair of pileated woodpeckers. In the spring, theyexcavated a large, oval-shaped cav-
ity about 4 m up in an aspen snagon the Potter farm and successfullyraised a family. The following spring, a femalegoldeneye duck took up resi-dence in the old pileated cavity.About 30 hours after hatching, herbrood jumped from the cavity, landing unharmed on the groundbelow and then pattering off to thepond. In the fall, a troupe of flyingsquirrels discovered the cavityand decided that it would make agood winter home. Flying squirrelsare nocturnal, so they spend theirdays snuggled up together in thewarm cavity. In early April, theydisperse to find mates and raisetheir own families. Soon after the flying squirrels

Salty Water Two buddies are fishing, but theyhaven't caught anything all day. Then, another fisherman walks bywith a huge load of fish. They ask him,"Excuse me, but where did you get allthose fish?" The other fisherman replies," If youjust go down the stream until the waterisn't salty, there are a ton of hungryfish." They thank him and go on theirway. Fifteen minutes later, one fisher-man says to the other, "Fill the bucketup with water and see if the water issalty." He dips the bucket in the streamand drinks some. "Nope. Still salty." Thirty minutes later, he asks him tocheck again. "Nope, still salty."
One hour later they checkagain. "Nope. Still salty." "This isn't good," the fish-erman finally says. "We havebeen walking for almost two hours andthe water is still salty!" "I know," says the other. "And thebucket is almost empty!"Closed For Good! I was standing in line at the bankwhen there was a commotion at thecounter. A woman was distressed, exclaim-ing, "Where will I put my money? Ihave all my money and my mortgagehere! What will happen to my mort-gage?" It turned out that she had misunder-stood a small sign on the counter. The sign read, WE WILL BECLOSED FOR GOOD FRIDAY.

Digging Deep The boss ordered oneof his men to dig a holeeight feet deep. After thejob was completed the bossreturned and explained an error hadbeen made and the hole wouldn'tbe needed. "Fill 'er up," he ordered. The worker did as he'd beentold. But he ran into a problem. Hecouldn't get all the dirt packed backinto the hole without leaving amound on top. He went to theoffice and explained his problem.
The boss snorted, "Honestly! The kind of help you get thesedays! There's obviously only onething to do. You'll have to dig thathole deeper!"
Too Cute With her brown eyes and curlyhair, our youngest daughter takesafter my husband. One day I wasstanding with her in the supermar-ket when a woman commented onhow cute she was. My smile disappeared whenshe asked, "Is she really yours?"

We Have Moved!
Same great people, same great products, new location.
We have relocated from Nisku to a newfacility west of Edmonton in BeaconIndustrial Park, just west of GlowingEmbers at highway 16A and highway 60.The new state of the art facility is moreefficient and will help us deliver a better RV experience.
A little smaller than the building we aremoving out of but more efficient. Withlower overhead and great buying power,we will be able to offer even better sale prices. Combine this with great Trailblazer service and there will be nobetter RV deals anywhere.
