President’s Message May 2013

May promises to be filled with sun! I've almost

forgotten what that is. Let the count downs be-

gin! For Reno, for Steamboat Springs, for Relay

for Life, and for car show season! I know I'm get-

ting very excited.

This year dad and I have decided to take on our

first long distance car show. We've done several day drives there and back

shows, but this is the first out of state show. We are heading off to Steamboat

Springs, Colorado over Father's Day weekend. We've registered, got our ac-

commodations, made appointments to have the Shelby's detailed, started our

planning, called grandma to tell her we will be dropping down to visit for a few

days afterward, and are wondering just how many things we either haven't

thought of or don't know to think about.

I'm also excited for the Duck Daze parade on June 1st in University Place. I

know it's a ways away, but planning just might be necessary for this one. I've

been told by the organizer that kids line the street and candy tossing is ex-

pected. I've been advised that 50-60 lbs of candy is what is usually needed to

make it through the parade. Decorating, you and your car are also encour-

aged. There are rumblings of giant ducks, hats, costumes, and streamers, ba-

sically anything duck goes! If you don't have a club window cling, or lost yours

in the Daffodil parade, and would like one, let Nancy Freeman know. You can

purchase one for $20.

Tip of the Month:

Time to check all those hoses, wires, and cables under the hood before show

season. Sometimes they wiggle loose and need to be tightened up or ???

Clean off those connections before you spend lots of money replacing them,

sometimes you only need to do a bit of refurbishing instead of replacing.

TIRAMISU

Compliments of Nikolas Pistella

Ingredients

*6 egg yolks

3 tablespoons sugar

1 pound mascarpone cheese

1 1/2 cups strong espresso, cooled

2 teaspoons dark rum ( white grape juice as sub.)

24 packaged ladyfingers

1/2 cup bittersweet chocolate shavings, for garnish

Directions

In a large bowl, using an electric mixer with whisk attachment, beat egg yolks and sugar until thick

and pale, about 5 minutes. Add mascarpone cheese and beat until smooth. Add 1 tablespoon of es-

presso and mix until thoroughly combined.

In a small shallow dish, add remaining espresso and rum. Dip each ladyfinger into espresso for only 5

seconds. Letting the ladyfingers soak too long will cause them to fall apart. Place the soaked ladyfin-

ger on the bottom of a 13 by 9 inch baking dish, breaking them in half if necessary in order to fit the

bottom.

Spread evenly 1/2 of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers. Arrange another layer of soaked

ladyfingers and top with remaining mascarpone mixture.

Cover tiramisu with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, up to 8 hours.

Before serving, sprinkle with chocolate shavings.

* Raw Egg Warning

Food Network Kitchens suggest caution in consuming raw and lightly cooked eggs due to the slight

risk of salmonella or other food-borne illness. To reduce this risk, we recommend you use only fresh,

properly refrigerated, clean grade A or AA eggs with intact shells, and avoid contact between the yolks

or whites and the shell. For recipes that call for eggs that are raw or undercooked when the dish is

served, use shell eggs that have been treated to destroy salmonella, by pasteurization or another ap-

proved method.

Notes:

So I found out that instead of the wine you can use white grape juice as a substitute

Instead of coffee you can just leave that out or maybe add some coco powder (chocolate powder or

whatever it is called).

Daffodil Parade By Pamela Pistella

Page 11

Pony News May 2013

The Daffodil Festival just celebrated its 80th year. The parade itself

has been going on ever since 1934, with the exception of the war

years of 1943, 1944, and 1945. The parade travels through the four

cities of Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Orting. This year’s theme

was the “Magic of Music”, which had of over 150 entries, including

floats, bands, marching, and mounted units. Floats are decorated

with thousands of fresh-cut daffodils and the parade is a bridge that

links one generation to another. If you would like to know more

about the history of the Daffodil Festival go to

www.thedaffodilfestival.org .

The Pierce County Mustang Club has had the honor to be a part of this tradition for the past 4 years.

Thank you to Paul Nee for coordinating with the Daffodil Committee so PCMC can participate in the pa-

rade and be a part of the Puyallup Valley history. Each year our club has carried the Educators of the

Year, Pierce County Executive and PC Superior Court Judge in our convertible Mustangs. We also have

had a Special Unit featuring the various styles of Mustangs in our club.

This year was another spectacular event. PCMC was representing in full force. We had twelve converti-

bles for the Educators of the Year, one for the PC Executive and PC Superior Court Judge. Representing

the Special Unit, were seventeen Mustangs. Although the weather was not a blue cloudless sky, we can-

tered down the parade route in style with our shined up ponies, smiles on our faces, and daffodils on

our cars.

Unlike the past years, where there was nothing but sunshine during the parade, this year the rain clouds

decided they needed to represent. After all this is Washington and the rain never stops anyone from

enjoying a good show. However, the rain clouds were very gracious to the convertibles in all four cities

during the parade. To everyone’s surprise the convertibles were able to roll through the parade route

with their tops down, allowing the special guests they were carrying be seen. When the convertibles

were done with the parade route the rain came back and continued until the next parade started. This

was a perfect rain scenario for convertibles on a parade day that is being televised. Yes that’s right the

Daffodil Parade in Puyallup was televised and shown on Kong that night at 7PM.

Page 12

Pony News May 2013

The Special Unit was not as lucky in the rain department. The rain clouds were so very excited to see so

many beautiful Mustangs along the parade route they just couldn’t stay away. It may have been raining

off and on during the parade but these Mustangs knew how to entertain the crowd. There was a show of

sirens sounding off and police lights shinning , engines flexing their muscles and over all looking fresh

and sounding mean!

This year’s parade was once again a success. Many of us went to Ricky J’s in Puyallup after the long day

We all sat and ate dinner and watched the parade from start to finish just to see all the beautiful Mus-

tangs shine on television. Thank you to all that participated. If you were unable to make it this year

please put it on your calendar for next April. The club is always looking for more cars to join the parade,

especially convertibles.

Scavenger Hunt By Monika Kirkland

Page 14

Pony News May 2013

First of all, I like to let every one know the cruise organization was a lot of teamwork. Starting with

the route mapping done by Rachel & Mike, the crafting of the plaques by my husband Lenny,

Nancy’s help with South Hill Mall Security, Joanie’s arranging the reserved parking and discount

lunch coupons at EQC, to Rachel & Charlene help with the score tallying. A big THANK YOU!!!!!!

11 cars participated in our scavenger hunt. The weather was cloudy, but it did not rain on us.

We encountered no problems with the South Hill Mall security. As Nancy and I were diligent in check-

ing with them as well as the Applebee’s Management.

The route was mapped out by Mike and Rachel. A big THANKS. I stayed in the lead for about 3 miles.

Tuned into my music, I missed a turn and found myself all alone on the road. Got utterly lost within

those South Hill neighborhoods. And this after driving the route 2 times.

But then I encountered a few Mustangs along the route. Beautiful scenery with the countryside bust-

ing out of the seams with those spring colors. I am sure some pictures can be found on our photo

bucket site.

Our destination was the EQC Fife. Thank you Rachel & Charlene for helping me weed through all the

pictures, things to get, and the Q&A’s. Also a big Thank You to Joanie for organizing the ½ off lunch

coupon and the reserved park-

ing. The meal was inexpensive

and good.

And the winners were:

1st place Stacy & friends

2nd place Pammy & Cary

3rd place Rachel & Mike

4th place Renea & Tony

5th place Pete & Nancy

6th place Tina, Max & kids

I would like to thank everyone for coming out. I enjoyed myself ( excluding the lost part ) and I hope you

all did as well.

If there are any suggestions for making the cruise more fun, feel free to let me know. I will pass it

along to the next brave soul to organize a scavenger hunt.

If anyone is interested in organizing a cruise of any kind, please let me know. I will gladly lend a hel-

poing hand. Just don’t fallow my car!

Pony News May 2013

It was another wonderful wet Washington Sunday afternoon.

We had 13 Mustangs join the cruise to the Rainier View

Winery and Nursery. When we arrived to the winery we sat

in their greenhouse. The green house was full of beautiful

greenery and flowers. The owners of the winery talked to us

about each of the 9 wine that we sampled. They do not

make ordinary American wine. Their recipes come from

Europe. If you like wine, this winery is a nice change in pace

and it’s close by in Graham. We all had a great time talking

to one another and wandering around the nursery picking up

a few things for the garden. Thank you to Bill Norman for

putting this cruise together.

Emergency Food Network By Nancy Freeman

Pony News May 2013

Early, but not too early on a Saturday morning 10 club members met to volunteer time

at the Emergency Food Network and to again participate in their Repack Program. In the

past members have repacked huge containers of frozen carrots or peas, this time it was

4,800 pounds of kernel corn. Tasks include filling family size poly bags with product,

twisting and sealing, then transferring to large storage boxes for future disbursement to

local food banks.

15.5 million meals were served in Pierce County in 2012. More than 14 million

pounds of healthy, nutritious food is annually provided to 67 food banks, meal sites and

shelters for distribution to low income families and individuals.

Our next day of volunteering is scheduled for November 9th, consider joining in this

fun, feel good event.

Many thanks to Nikolas, Linda, Pete, Pammy,

Chris, Stacey, Rachel, Missy, Clay and Nancy.

Hooked On Driving (HOD) is a community of indi-

viduals who share a passion for driving their cars.

HOD is primarily focused on providing high performance driver training for those with capable cars, in the

controlled environment of a race course – with NO competition or training for competition. All that is

needed to participate is a safe, well maintained and reliable car, and an auto racing helmet with an SA

2005 designation or newer. There are some restrictions on driving convertibles – please visit

www.hookedondriving.com . With a focus on safety, coaching, learning and fun, HOD drivers are able to

experience their cars at a higher level on a track than would be safe or prudent on the public high-

ways. As a result, drivers gain a new appreciation of their car – its capabilities, strengths and weak-

nesses; as well as their own skills as a driver and the need to develop those skills. Oh, and by the way,

they have a TON OF FUN!

HOD has given PCMC members and their guest a discount cost on their events. If you would like to enroll

in an event, please contact Charlene Rivera at [email protected] to receive the “Code”.

You may pick any event day that HOD offers or you can join us on our PCMC day, Friday August 23. Lunch

is included. Cost is $250

The Left Behind Cruise

A lot of our club members will be heading to

Reno to participate in the MCA National Show

June 7 - 9th. We wish them safe travels and a fun

event.

For the ones left behind I would like to organize a

cruise/picnic. On Saturday the 8th of June.

Leaving the Safeway parking lot on 6th Ave. around

noon.

Traveling past Chambers Bay along the water to the historic

Town of Steilacoom for a picnic in the town park.

For those that like to experience a ferry ride we will embark

the ferry to Anderson Island after the picnic. Cost is around

$20.00 per car.

I know the island has some nature trails. Was thinking about

an ice cream stop. The grandkids and I will explore the island

during spring break and we will let you all know.

This of course is all weather permitting. This would be an

informal cruise with no frills. ( No dash plaques,

etc.)

Anyone interested please drop me an e-mail

[email protected] or call (253) 376-5964.

Sunday the 9th there is the Topless (convertibles

only) Show at XXX in Issaquah or Horsepower

Show at Griot’s in Tacoma.
