Duplo DC-645 is a near-line slitting, cutting andcreasing solution that automatically slits, cuts andcreases a sheet in one pass. The Duplo DC-645 is fully automated and easy to use. Sheets from the pressare loaded onto the feed tray. The machine’s functionsare set by reading a bar code printed on the top right-hand edge of the sheet – or by programming viathe PC controller.

In both cases the standard CCD camera checks theimage registration mark so that all the operations ofthe machine are related to the position of the imageon the paper rather than to the dimensions of thepaper itself. Each sheet is slit, cut and creasedaccording to preset design template and then neatlystacked on the output stacker. (www.duplo.com)

Morgana AutoCreaser is a comprehensive creasingsolution that eliminates the problem of cracking whilefolding digitally produced output. It is equally effectivewith conventionally printed cards, as well as laminatesor cross-grained stock. Morgana DigiFold is an automated creasing andfolding solution using a creasing rule and matrix thatcreases the substrate before feeding it into the foldingunit. The suction-feed device is the world’s firstcreasing and folding machine designed primarily forthe digital print market. It’s the only automated folderusing a creasing rule and matrix that first creases the

substrate before feeding it into the folding unit. It alsouses a patented, new folding system which eliminatesthe need for conventional buckle plates or knives. Itwon’t mark or scratch even the most sensitive digitallyproduced material.

The DigiFold can be used as a creaser/folder, a folderor just a creaser. It uses an electronically controlled‘flying knife’ that is contoured around extra-largediameter rollers and moving at the same speed as thematerial passing through the machine.

Horizon APC-61II is a programmable hydraulicguillotine cutter. Both the clamping and cuttingmechanism is hydraulically powered for reliableoperation. A touch-screen display enables easieroperation. The back gauge is precisely positioned by a servo-motor drive. The large, five-inch, icon-basedtouch screen is easy to use, eliminating the need for askilled operator.

Job memory capacity is 99 jobs and 99 steps per job(total of 3,000 steps available). The numeric keypadscreen is available for cutting size entries andcalculations. Multiple program functions include evendivide cutting, total cutting and repeat cutting andcompressing. (www.horizon.co.jp)

Horizon HT-30 is a fully automatic three-side trimmingsolution. The innovative system trims three sides of abook with a single knife. A pressure clamp holds androtates the books for sequential top, fore-edge, andbottom trimming. Through robotic trimming, theoperator simply inputs untrimmed and trimmed booksize at the touch-screen. The HT-30 then performs allnecessary setups automatically and transports andtrims each book.

Precise servo-motors are used for knife positioning to insure high quality trimming. The servo-controlledhydraulic unit adjusts pressure automatically formarkless trimming. If the book dimensions are thesame, the HT-30 can trim books of different thicknesscontinuously. Maximum trim thickness is 2 inches.

Knife operation and book clamping are hydraulicallycontrolled for safe and powerful trimming. Thetrimming section, feed table, and stacker are allinterlocked and covered for maximum operator safety.

Via its website, users cancrop images, remove red-eye, order pictures in avariety of sizes, and transform them into photo booksor calendars. The company makes it simple to sendprints and personalized gifts, or to share picturesonline. Prints are developed and mailed within 24hours.

Growing in a competitive environmentShutterfly wanted a print solution that would open upopportunities for more diverse substrates and productsonto which photographic images could be transferred.

Jeannine Smith, Chief Engineering Officer forShutterfly, elaborated, “4 x 6 inch prints are animportant entry point for our customers. This is howthey first learn about Shutterfly. Once customers arecomfortable with the online ordering experience, wecan offer them a wider variety of products – photobooks, calendars, and other items they can’t get atretail locations and they can’t easily create at home.”

“Customers also expect that, if they have a favoriteimage that they’ve seen typically on a 4 x 6 print, theywant the image to look the same – colors, sharpness,all the characteristics that are important to them.”

Reliability was another concern for Shutterfly. At peakordering times, such as the holidays, the company isfocused on 24/7 printing, delivering consistent qualityoutput, getting orders out on time and exceedingpeople’s expectations for holiday cards and gifts.

HP delivers quality, reliability and profitsWhen Shutterfly decided to expand its productofferings, they sought a new printer technology beyondsilver halide printing, and HP was clearly a leader inthe market. The company deployed HP Indigo digitalpresses, primarily the model 3050, which has up toseven color printing options with PMS and customcolor capabilities, and tremendous flexibility for shortand mixed runs – including variation by content,images, and print media.

The company was able to expand with a uniquecollection of “design-it-yourself” photo gift items,adding favorite pictures to calendars, thank you notecards, greeting cards, photo books, and many otheritems.

R & R envisions the future of photospecialty printingR & R Images is an Arizona-based marketing solutionscompany that specializes in personalized 1-to-1marketing, commercial photography, large-formatoutput, design, production, scanning, bindery,fulfillment and mailing. For its custom-order business, R & R creates short-run books, greeting cards andwedding albums for photographers and onlineretailers. The orders go straight from the client’s Web site to R & R’s automated workflow systems for fast-turnaround printing, finishing and mailing.

A related side of this business is the creation of custom wedding books. R & R works with high-endphotographers who take wedding pictures for the richand famous, including many movie stars and sportscelebrities. The photographers resell the albums for up to $4,000 each.

“These books are absolutely stunning,” R & R presidentRod Key says. “Top notch photographers want a topnotch product. To achieve the quality we need, it hasto be done on an Indigo.”

Turning to the HP Indigo press 5500The HP Indigo 5500 is a cornerstone of this strategy.Its six-color Light Cyan/Light Magenta process standsto open new markets for R & R bridging the gapbetween digital and traditional silver halidephotographic printing.

R & R is also using the 5500 to print on a variety ofsubstrates, including less expensive papers. Successhere would both increase profit margins and open thedoor to new markets requiring lower price points. Itssimple user interface and automated self-diagnosticsenable R & R to hire and quickly and easily trainworkers to handle the new volume as business grows.

Fulfilling the strategic vision“We’re brainstorming through our marketingdepartment. Our pressroom is testing its newcapabilities. We’re surveying clients and consumers to find out what they really want,” Key says. “Our goalis to develop new product lines that will get us intomarkets we haven’t been in before.”

The ideas already are popping. R & R is thinking about branding photo prints with the photographer’sname and marketing messages on the back, drivingmore business back to their photographer clients. They are also considering school fundraising effortswith customized photo books that parents could order online.
