Surf Fishing for Trophy Stripers on the Outer Banks

ctors & Samples

March 2015

November, December, andJanuary are the prime months forsome of the most exciting striperfishing experiences ever. Surf fishingin the winter months at the OuterBanks is not for the weak at heart. This is for hardcore surf fishermenwho have never caught large trophystripers at the Outer Banks of NorthCarolina.

The best time to catch thesemonsters is on the cold, dark, overcast, and just plain nasty days ofwinter. Stripers love to feed on thekind of days that most people wouldrather be home watching a sportingshow or game on the tube.

The prime fishing spots are theareas located on the Outer Banks onState Highway #12 from Nags Headto Ocracoke.

There several ways to get to theOuter Banks. Most people take I-85or I-95 into North Carolina. TakeUS-64 East toward Rocky Mount,Williamston, and Plymouth andcontinue on US-64 East to RoanokeIsland. Take North Carolina StateRoad #12 at Kitty Hawk to the OuterBanks.

The other way is to take US-70out of Morehead City to State Road#12 North to Cedar Island where you

catch the Cedar Island Ferry toOcracoke. This is a toll ferry, and it isrecommended that reservations bemade for this ferry. You continue northdown #12 to the Hatteras IslandFerry. Take the Hatteras Island Ferryfrom Ocracoke. Check ferryschedules for departure and arrivaltimes. After reaching Hatteras Islandtravel down State #12 to yourdestination on the Outer Banks.

North Carolina now requires allfishermen to purchase a saltwaterfishing license. Most tackle shops

offer these licenses, as well as sizeand limit regulations, While you arethere you can pick up a tide schedulewhich you will find to be most helpful. Most of the beaches on the OuterBanks allow driving with an off-roadvehicle. A four-wheel drive vehicle isa must to getting the prime fishingspots. For those who have not drivenin the soft sand on the beach, it is agood idea to run your vehicle in 4-wheel high range and follow the tracksand ruts made by others. This allowsyou to travel the sand that has beenpacked down by others and helps youfrom getting stuck. Even the mostexperienced four-wheelers havetrouble from time to time, and if youget stuck, you will find that otherfishermen will go out of there to helpyou.

Always carry a heavy rope orchain, a shovel, and some pieces ofcarpet that would help to dig you outand give you some extra traction.Lower tire pressure of 20 pounds orless is recommended for driving on

Editor’s Note...

Fishing is not just a popularhobby for folks who live in astate with a generous coastline.

The act of fishing representsdifferent things to differentpeople. A grandfather passingdown ancient knowledge to hisgrandson. A group of school girlsgoing noodling (Google it andthen be amazed!). A bunch ofguys hopping into their boats tohit their honey holes to land topprize in fishing tournament.

For us Deep South coastalstates residents, fishing is adeeply spiritual experience and

yes, a beloved passion, whetherit is fresh water dangling or saltwater angling.

This month launches the midSpring season of outdoor activi-ties. And all of us here at PPP&Bwish all of our readers much luckin all their passions.

Remember that it’s not onlyimportant to preserve history aswe do in antiques/collectibles butit is equally, if not more so, im-portant to CREATE history byliving our lives fully.

And besides, fishing createsgreat memories.

the sand. Some run as low as 12pounds of pressure. When you leavethe beach, inflate your tires to normaltire pressure as soon as possible.

Beach access areas are clearlymarked to let you know where youcan enter and exit the beach. Normallythere are a lot of vehicles traveling upand down the beach, and you canobserve others fishing. Goodareas to fish are evident by thenumber of vehicles backed upto the fishing holes along thebeach.

There are several ways tofind the stripers on the beach.Start at Oregon Inlet at theBonner Bridge on #12. There isa beach across just before youget to the bridge on the left.Look up and down the beachand look for parked vehicles todetermine which direction youwant to travel. Observe what isgoing on, and even when you seefish being caught, find an openspace to set up to fish.

Most striper fisherman usean 8- to 11- foot surf rod witheither a bait casting or spinningreel with at least 20-pound testline. Having a good real with a gooddrag system is a much. When youhook up with one of the monsters, hewill take lots of line before you turnhim. If the stripers are feeding in thesurf, a heave plug like a large Hopkinswill work. You will also need a goodset of waders to keep you dry. Youmade have to wade out into the surfto get to the fish.

The fish will normally move thebeach depending on the direction ofthe bait fish. The frenzied birds divinginto the bait is your signal to findfeeding fish.

Watching all the other fishermenrunning up the beach and frantically

casting into the Blitzing fish willcertainly get your heart pumping andyour adrenalin flowing.

This type of striper blitz is what weall dreamed of and will creatememories that will last for a lifetime. This is the best for striper fisherman. For those who like to set up and waitfor the fish to bite, get a lounge chair

and rod holder and set up on thebeach near a hole that is visible.

At Oregon Inlet, a lot of fishermenprefer using live eels on a rig thatallows the bait to move up and downyour line. You can purchase these eelsat several of the tackle shops at NagsHead. Others like to use a drum rigwith enough weight to hold it on thebottom with a large chunk of freshmullet. Usually there are otherfishermen lined up on the beach, andwhen a run starts, several hook up atthe same time. While waiting for thestripers to bite, drum or blues usuallykeep you busy.

This stretch of road across theBonner Bridge at Pea Island does nothave beach access for vehicles. Thestriper fishing here can be fantastic.Look for diving birds to let you knowwhere the fish are located. Park alongthe road and walk over the sanddunes to the ocean. You will probablynot be only fisherman there. The hikeover the dunes can pay big rewards

especially if there is a striper runon the beach.

Travel with your waders onand your rod rigged with sometype of metal bait. Be sure totake spare plugs in case ofthose large strippers breaksyour line.

Continue up #12, and youwill pass several small townssuch as Rodanthe, Salvo,Avon, and Buxton. There arebeach access signs on thehighway to locate the accessramps. The ramps arenumbered so you will knowwhere you are. Get off the roadand on to the beach accessramp. Be sure that your vehicleis in in 4-wheel drive and yourtire pressure adjusted. Payparticular attention to areas thathave vehicles parked, as they

are more than likely proven fishingareas.

Look for landmarks, so when youfind a good place to fish, you canthere at a later time. Marking yourhole is a good idea for futurereference. Learn your way aroundand remember where the beachaccess areas are located. Keep notesand logs because these beaches lookalike, and finding a favorite hole issometimes difficult.

There are many tackle shopslocated on Hatteras Island. Mosthave updated fishing reports posteddaily or weekly. Just give them a call,

and they will give you a weather reportand fishing update. These shopsshould have fresh bait and meet allyour tackle needs, as well as offeradvice on where and how the fishhave been caught.

After Thanksgiving, the availabilityof accommodations and restaurantsare slim because some are closed forthe season. The outer banks Motel inBuxton, located near the CapeHatteras light house, is considered amust stop for all. The road continuespast the lighthouse, and the accessramp is clearly marked. Enter thebeach, and follow the tracks to theright. You will see vehicles all alongthe shoreline. It is usually verycrowded at the point. Parking placesare at a premium the closer you getto the point.

The rough waters and the abilityto fish both sides of the point make ita great consideration in determininga place to fish. The wind speed anddirection is a major consideration indetermining where to fish. Observe

Fishing continued the happenings carefully if you decideto fish the point. The better the fishing, the more crowded the point becomes.

It can become dangerous at timeswhen a lot of fishermen are throwingplugs or metal into the surf. Don’t beafraid to get right in there and makeyourself a spot to fish. It will not takelong to figure the drill. When the fishrun, the excitement is unbelievable, and the fishing is fantastic. Somefishermen set up camp on the pointday and night and wait for a run.

Your equipment is most importantwhile fishing at the point. Most use atleast an 11-foot still surf rod with surfcasting reel or very good spinning reelwith at least 20-pound-test line. A fewyards in casting length can make thedifference in your fishing success.Large drum are also caught at thepoint, although mostly at night. Ipromise you the wait will be worthyour time.

The sunrises and sunsets are likesomething you have ever seen. Youwill meet folks from all over thecountry. Share some fun, swap some

lies, and you will have the fishing tripof your life. If you are a surf fisherman, you must experience the happeningsat Cape Point and the Outer Banksof North Carolina. It just does not getany better.

Willow Tree Consignment

Celebrates 1st Anniversary

If you haven’t been to Willow TreeConsignment, you are really missinga treat. Willow Tree, the brainchildof Sherry Stobaugh, is not like otherconsignment stores. You will noticethe difference the minute you walk in.It’s clean, smells good and everythingis tastefully decorated.

Sherry worked for a concretemanufacturer for 33 years. When shefound herself without work and hadthe opportunity to do somethingdifferent, she immediately thought ofa consignment store. But not just anyconsignment store. Willow TreeConsignment is the culmination ofseveral years of research spentlooking for the right combinationof products to carry and whatretail floor design to use. In anutshell Sherry took all the thingsshe liked about other consignmentstores and combined them tocreate Willow Tree Consignment.

Sherry’s main criteria wasa friendly funatmosphere. You willabsolutely be greetedwith a smiling face thatconveys appreciation forstopping by the shop.Willow Tree Consignmentknows that you havemany options of how tospend your time so it is agreat honor for you tovisit their shop.

Willow TreeConsignment carries

furniture, home décor, wall art, crystal, china, small kitchen appliances, small electronics, etc.One difference in WillowTree from other shops isthe addition of awomen’s boutique. Instock are better brandsof clothes and shoes (inall sizes), handbags andjewelry. Add in localAlamance County artistsand craftsmen, terrariums(and classes) andcollectibles you have aone of a kind consignmentexperience. Willow TreeConsignment has

approximately 12000 sq. ft. ofshopping and display space.

In addition to the types of itemsWillow Tree Consignment carry, the way everything is artfullydisplayed is unusual. You will notfind the normal rows of sofas, chairs, bedroom suits, etc. WillowTree sets everything in smallvignettes so you can envision what

this item might look like in your home. Each grouping of furniture has lamps, pillows, wall art and other decorativeaccessories placed around that co-ordinate.

Have I ever attended a concertthere? Actually no. I much prefer tosit on my front porch with my bottleof wine and enjoy the sound of musicdrifting on the whispering winds. Oneday I will attend a concert but so far Ihave thoroughly enjoyed this greatperk of living in Cowtown, USA.

Everything old is blue again? It is in Warrenton, Texas, where a

woman is hoping to capitalize on anupcoming antique show weekendhave a male stripper revue along withthe typical old lamps, rusty advertisingsigns and scuffed-up furniture,UPI.com reports.

Stephanie Welch saw theAmerican Cowboy Las Vegas Revueat another antiques show, anddecided to book them on the sameweekend as the 47th Original RoundTop Antiques Fair, a popular event inthe area.

The revue is a Chippendales-likeperformance featuring muscular mendressed in jeans, boots, cowboy hatsand, occasionally, shirts.

The fair is April 1-4 in Round Top,but the revue will be in Warrenton, about eight miles away.

Still, the proximity is enough to geta rise out of the residents of RoundTop — population: 90. What’s reallyarousing controversy is the fact thatthe come hither cowboys are set toperform Easter weekend.

“I find all of it pretty distasteful tobegin with, the fact that they’reactually having it on Good Friday andHoly Saturday across the street fromthe church really makes it distastefulto me and the vast population,”Fayette County Judge Ed Janeckatold KXAN TV.

Welch saidshe doesn’twant to offendanyone, but theevent justhappened to fallon Easterw e e k e n d ,according toCBS12.com.

In addition, the cowboydancers won’tbe fully nude and will perform in aclosed tent for only women over theage of 21. No alcohol will be served.

That is not enough to satisfy theconcerns of folks like Kiki Teague.

“I see what they’re saying, butthen it comes back to me that that’sjust not really what Round Top’s beenabout,” Teague told ABC13.com.

Since I am the Editor of this e-zine,I allow myself a few indulgences andam providing this edition’s Book ofthe Month review which will hope-fully bring home the poignant pointthat the founders of Memorial Day didso with the original intention of hon-oring those of our military service menand women who have passed on.

I am an Army brat, therefore havea deep and abiding love and respectfor our military. Please do not mis-construe this declaration to mean thatI support the policies that others cre-ate and then send our enlisted to thevarious world theaters to implementthose policies. Any student of historyand who is also a criticial thinkerknows that this has been the way ofthe world for time eternal.

Perhaps USMC Major GeneralSmedley Butler said it best many de-cades ago, ‘War is a racket.’

But nevertheless, I am a supporterof our military and wanted to sharewith our readers my Uncle Burton’sbook of his memoirs ranging from hisbirth, becoming a WWII aircraft car-rier torpedo bomber pilot, to travel-ing the world.

Burton was married to my Aunt (onmy father’s side) and was quite thecharacter. always regaling stories ofhis adventures as a pilot and of hismany travels. Several years ago aftermy Aunt passed away, Burton wasable to finish his book and get hismanuscript and photos to the pub-lisher for final printing. I was delightedto find in my mailbox a copy of hisbook.

And as I read through it, there wereseveral times where I had the thought,‘oh, so THAT’S why we never talkedabout so-n-so or such-n-such!NOW, I understand!’

Book of the Month -

‘That’s The Way It Was’ by Capt. Burton Drum

It was with great relish that I torethrough Burton’s book learning aboutthe times that he grew up in, what ourcountry was like before I was born, how he adapted to an ever changingworkplace environment and the manydifferent places around the world heliterally fell in love with.

I recall scratching my head uponlearning my uncle’s father was ‘some-one who worked at the White House’and how Burton recalled many WhiteHouse Staff Christmas parties.

I gasped at his tales of combat fly-ing over the oceans and seas.

I remember picking my jaw up offthe floor at his description of what itwas like to time his push forward ona plane’s throttle during take-off inperfect sync with the herd of cattlerocking in tandem rhythm in the bellycargo hold to prevent crashing intothe side of a mountain.

I fondly remember laughing outloud at my too-human uncle’s con-fession of having lived by the conse-quences of his certain choices andhad very little regrets.

My uncle, Captain Burton R.Drum, passed away April 3, 2014,he was 90 years old.

As per Burton’s obit....”He was anairline pilot of great experience andhad flown everything from a StearmanBi-plane to the Boeing 747. As aWWII veteran, he flew the TBM tor-pedo bomber off carriers in the Pa-cific then transitioned to commercialflying and rounded out his carrier asan FAA check pilot. Captain Drumlived in or visited over 80 countriesduring his lifetime and his thirst forknowledge never diminished.”

My very colorful uncle was oneother thing - one of the last few re-maining members of what is knownas ‘the Greatest Generation.’
