ABOUT BRESCIA

Dating back to the Roman period, Brescia (originally Brixia), and its province lie almost at the heart of the Po Valley, between Milan and Venice, enclosed by three lakes: Lake Garda, Lake Idro and Lake Iseo. In 2008 Brescia had a population of about 200,000 inhabitants. The town is served by an excellent bus and subway system and a motorway and railway network; distances to Milan and Verona are 92 km and 67 km respectively.The nearest airports are Montichiari (VBS), Verona (VRN), Bergamo (BGY), Milan Malpensa (MXP), Milan Linate (LIN), and Venice (VCE).

A BRIEF HISTORYof the University of Brescia

The University of Brescia was officially established in 1982, building on previous courses given by the nearby Universities of Milan, Milan Polytechnic, and Parma.

When it was founded, the University gathered three Schools: Economics, Engineering, and Medicine. The School of Law was added in 1996.

8 9THE ITALIAN UNIVERSITY SYSTEM In Italy higher education consists of university courses lasting 5 years (or 3+2 years with an intermediate 1st level bachelor’s degree); these courses follow the 13 years of primary and secondary education.

In 2005, the Ministers of Higher Education of the Bologna Process signatory countries decided to develop the Qualifications Framework for the European Higher Education Area - QF for the EHEA. The Framework comprises the three main cycles of Higher Education, as defined by the Bologna Process, and offers an overview of all qualifications awarded at the end of each cycle, with reference to the number of ECTS credits collected and to the learning outcomes (DublinDescriptors).

Health&Wealth is the new thematic project of the University of Brescia, grounded in new knowledge, research, culture, health, wellbeing, technology, legality and progress: these will all become integrated into a vision of sustainable economic development in which the person and their values are the central objective. Health&Wealth is a project aimed at the transformation of both our way of living and of thinking, such that economic and industrial systems can thrive while respecting culture, people and the environment.

The Health&Wealth strategic plan adopted in 2014 is aimed towards developing

smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, in a modern industrial society in which wellbeing does not result solely from wealth but it is also ascribed to a blend of culture, environmental quality, sustainable urban choices and healthy lifestyles. This common vision shared by its faculty, researchers, and employees, is transmitted to the students and to the community at large.

Research and education priorities at the University of Brescia will be directed towards the development of activities of the Health&Wealth framework, with a collaborative effort of our areas of Economics,

Engineering and Technology, Law and Medicine on the following four major topics:• longevity, • environment, • lifestyles, • health and wellbeing technologies.

THE NEW EDUCATIONAL PROJECTTraining is a crucial transversal issue of the Health&Wealth project developed by the University of Brescia. This new and innovative educational project offers cultural and multi-disciplinary

courses of different levels aimed at preparing a new generation of educated and skilled citizens who will lead development in the academic world, business, institutions and society.

The Economics and Management Department (DEM) gathers different subject fields that share common research interests and integrated educational activities. The DEM carries out research and teaching activities that are focused on the complexity of the economic trends. Established in 2012 as a continuation of the former Department of Legal Sciences, the Department of Law is committed to excellence in research and teaching in higher education. The research and teaching carried out at the Department cover all areas of legal knowledge and range from Constitutional, Administrative and Fiscal Law to Civil, Commercial and Labour Law, Criminal Law, Criminal and Civil Procedure, International and European Law, Canonical and Ecclesiastical Law, Roman Law, Comparative Law, Legal History and Jurisprudence. The publications of the academic staff and the frequency of congresses and workshops held at the Department illustrate the high scientific achievements of the Department. It publishes two monographic series: the first, entitled “Collana del Dipartimento di Giurisprudenza”, is edited by Giuffré, and the second, entitled “Quaderni brevi del Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche” was edited by Promodis until 2012 and then by Bibliofabbrica. The teaching activities of the Department consist in a Single-cycle program in Law (Corso di Laurea Magistrale a ciclo unico in Giurisprudenza), an undergraduate program in Labour and Industrial Relations, designed for future company advisors (Corso di Laurea in Consulente del Lavoro e Giurista d’impresa), and a Second Level Master’s Degree Program in Legal Dispute Mediation. Moreover, the Department hosts the Specialization School for Legal Professions (Scuola di Specializzazione per le professioni legali), organises a Ph.D. program in Business and Law and is associated

with other Ph.D. programs in various legal areas. Finally, it is worth mentioning the organisation of the International Summer School in European Law, Competition and Protection of Social Rights and the development of the first Italian course in Clinical Legal Education within the framework of the Single-cycle program in Law (Corso di Laurea Magistrale a ciclo unico in Giurisprudenza).

The department of Civil, Environmental, Architectural Engineering and Mathematics is home to a total of about 70 academic members. Research is carried out on architecture, restoration of historical and modern buildings, building technology, structural analysis and design, seismic engineering, seismology, structural mechanics, geotechnical engineering, transportation, environmental engineering and waste management, fluid mechanics, hydraulic structures and hydrology, partial differential equations, mathematical models, numerical methods, algebraic and geometrical structures.The Department has hydraulics, geotechnical and structural laboratories with testing machines and facilities allowing the performance of a great number of tests. The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department (DIMI) of the University of Brescia includes more than 70 professors and researchers, divided into 14 research groups.Chemistry for Technologies, Design and Methods for Industrial Engineering, Basic and Applied Nuclear Physics, Industrial and Environmental Technical Physics, Industrial and Mechanical Plants, Economic and Managerial Engineering, Fluid Machines and Systems for Converting Energy, Applied Machine Mechanics, Metallurgy, Mechanical and Thermal Measures, Mechanic Design and Machine Construction, Science and Technology of Materials, Sociology of Economic and Work Processes, Technologies and Work Systems. The Department was established in the academic year 1982/83, in conjunction with the foundation of the University of Brescia. It was initially named “Department of Industrial Automation”, and later “Department of Electronics for Automation” so as to address, through its research activities, the needs of the local manufacturing industry. It gradually brought innovation to their production process thanks to the introduction of electrical components and algorithmic methods for automation and control. The Department, through the years, has consolidated its role and image as a unique environment for conducting studies and research for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary way including also fundamental research and it is now called Department of Information Engineering (DII). The Department’s main competences range in the following fields: Automation, Electromagnetic fields, Electronics, Physics of Fundamental Interaction, Information Technology, Electric and Electronic Measurements, Condensed Matter Physics and Telecommunications. Research activities are carried out within several research and development laboratories and they are oriented to improve both fundamental and application oriented research. Effort is also devoted to technology transfer to the manufacturing and service industry, whether public or private. The commitment of all researchers enabled the Department to deposit numerous patents, filed both nationally and internationally. In recent years, the Department has also acted as an incubator for a few spin-off companies, which are now operating successfully on the market place. The Department promotes and coordinates research investments as a whole; it provides adequate facilities, thanks to the maintenance of high quality laboratory equipment and an advanced computing and networking infrastructure. The careful allocation of available space, the intense interaction between different complementary research teams, and the tight support by its administrative personnel ensures that all available human resources can operate at best to handle successfully any contractual research whether publicly or privately funded.

The Department of Molecular and Translational Medicine, founded in 2011, includes more than 70 professors and researchers and encompasses different areas of basic research, diagnostics, translational and clinical medicine. The aim of the Department is the implementation of the principles of modern academic medicine being involved in all the scientific and teaching aspects of numerous clinical areas, related to diseases that are in continuous epidemiological and clinical evolution. They include cardio and cerebrovascular, oncological and haematological, respiratory, endocrine and metabolic, neurodegenerative, infectious and psychiatric diseases. In fact, they represent the main causes of fatal and non fatal events at present time and will be even more common and important in future years.The Department is organised in 5 sections 1. Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology; 2. Internal - Specialist Medicine; 3. Neurosciences;4. General - Specialist Surgery; 5. Maternal and paediatric diseases. Cross-cutting research on these themes and the study of disease mechanisms at a molecular level are key strengths of the Department. ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSES FOR ERASMUS STUDENTSAt the University of Brescia most courses are offered in Italian, though some seminars may take place in English.Erasmus granted students are required to have a basic knowledge of Italian. To provide students with adequate language skills, the University of Brescia organises every year a two-level free course of Italian at the beginning of the 1st semester (September) and at the beginning of the 2nd semester (February).At the end of the course each student who has attended at least 90% of the classes receives a certificate of attendance Students who are interested in these courses are requested to specify this option when filling in their application form for the University of Brescia.

STUDENTS AIDSThrough the management of student aid, the University of Brescia grants partial or total fee exemptions, providing the most brilliant, and/or economically disadvantaged students with housing and boarding facilities. Scholarships for Master and Ph.D. students are awarded through open competition, according to a ranking based on economic status and merit. They include financial support as well as housing and boarding facilities. Applications must be submitted by filling the form that is available on the University website.

SPORTS FACILITIES

The University of Brescia has a network of three libraries (Business & Law, with a historical Law branch, Medicine and Engineering) which occupy about 5,000 square meters with 321 seats for students and scholars in their reading rooms.

Printed library collections include over one hundred thousand monographs (among which 1,350 early printed books from the XVI Century to 1830) and 50,000 periodical volumes.

The digital library offers an array of resources and services in the university’s buildings (and outside for authenticated users): over 30,000 electronic journals, thousands of e-books and 45 online databases.

The Brescia University Sports Center (CUS Centro Universitario Sportivo) is an amateur sport association federated to C.U.S.I. agency for sport promotion of C.O.N.I. Brescia. CUS has a variety of facilities (weight room, tennis court, baseball field, basketball and volleyball facility) and has an agreement with some municipal swimming pools.

THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY SYSTEM

CUS organises many courses: pilates, yoga, swimming, kick boxing, postural gym, caribbean dances, basketball, soccer, volleyball, free climbing and many others.Moreover, Brescia CUS organises tournaments and summer courses, and regularly participates in the University National Championships.More information on
