Medical Education and Training

in Sweden

Undergraduate medical education in Sweden is

o fve and a hal years duration. Undergradu-

ate Medical Education leads to ”Läkarexamen”

which is the equivalent o a Medical Degree(M.D.). In order to be authorised to practice

as a doctor, a registration license, ”Läkarlegi-

timation” is required. Registration is obtained

ater successul completion o a compulsory

preregistration training programme ”allmän-

tjänstgöring (AT)” o minimum 18 months

and ater passing an oral and written examina-

tion. The pre-registration period (AT) is un-

dertaken ater obtaining the Medical Degree.

The dierent country councils (Landsting)

which are the regional administrators o health

care in Sweden decide upon the number o

preregistration posts. The Swedish Parliament

has decided that the number o pre-registration

posts shall be sufcient to match the number

o Swedish medical graduates as well as doctors

 with oreign qualifcations.

Ater obtaining ull registration the doctor

applies or a Specialist Training Post (Specialist-tjänstgöring – ST). Specialist training takes a

minimum o fve years and results in a Certi-

fcate o Specialist Qualifcation. In Sweden

there are at present 57 recognised medical

specialties.

Non- EU/EEA Medical Degrees

How to get a Swedish registration?

For doctors with a medical degree obtained in

a country outside the EU/EEA complemen-

tary training is required in order to be able to

obtain ull registration in Sweden. This com-

plementary training is described in the picture

on the next side.

Application to obtain ull registration in Swe-

den is made to The National Board o Health

and Welare (Socialstyrelsen). (1) The National

Board o Health and Welare (NBHW) asses-

ses the applicant doctor´s clinical competence

in every case and decides on the conditions or

obtaining ull registration. An application ormand inormation on the process o additional

training can be obtained rom the NBHW

Following the assessment o clinical competen-

ce by the NBHW the applicant doctor must

present evicence o sufcient knowledge o

the Swedish language. For more inormation

contact the NBHW. (2) A variety o courses

(3) on dierent levels are available in dierent

parts o the country. Additional inormation

about courses may be obtained rom the local

employment agencies.

Having presented evidence o sufcient know-

ledge o the Swedish language the applicant

doctor shall complete either:

• anexamtestingmedicalknowledgeandskills

(4) or

• aprobationaryperiodofclinicalserviceof

six months. (5)

The most common requirement or non-EU

doctors with no specialist qualifcation is to do

the exam testing medical knowledge and skills.

Qualifed specialist doctors with considerable

working experience usually has to do the six

month period o probationary work. The

decision however rests with the NBHW alone,

 which assesses each applicant individually.

National Board o Health and Welare does

not bring an automatic permit to study, work

or otherwise stay in Sweden. Inormation on

regulations or residence and work permits in

Sweden is provided by the Swedish Embassy, the Swedish Consulate or by the Swedish Mig-

ration Board. (www.migrationsverket.se)

Ater successul completion o the exam testing

medical knowledge and skills, (a maximum o

two retakes are allowed) or approved proba-

tionary work period, the NBHW will state

the conditions or obtaining ull registration

or each individual applicant. The most com-

mon case is that the applicant doctor who has

been required to do the exam testing medialknowledge and skills must thereater complete

the pre-registration training (Allmäntjänstgöring –

AT). (6) However, even applicants who have been

required to do the probationary work period might

be required to complete additional training.

The decisions o the NBHW on the require-ments or obtaining ull registration in Sweden

may vary to a great extent between individual

applicants. This is due to the act that the

results o the exam testing medical knowledge

and skills, as well as the probationary work

period, may dier considerably, and also to the

act that the applicants possess dierent qualif-

cations and experience in general.

In addition every individual is required to dotraining in and successully complete a test on

medical laws and regulations. (7)

Ater completed test a ormal application is sent to

the NBHW, to fnally obtain ull registration as a

doctor. Now the doctor has reached the goal and is

able to start working as a doctor in Sweden. (8)

It is possible to include relevant practice when app-

lying or a Swedish specialist certifcate. (9)

Advertisements or available posts are mainly

ound in Läkartidningen, the Swedish Medical

 Journal (www.lakartidningen.se). Läkartidningen

is published weekly. Advertisements or medical

Landstingsvärlden.

Medical vacancies are also advertised at ”Arbets-
