“All aboard for the Toy Train Operating Society yearly convention.”

That call attracted about 75 avid train enthusiasts from the Southwestern last month, one of which was Emmert Stouffer.

Stouffer, who is a building maintenance foreman in Compton, attended the conference to display and discuss the toy train cars he has built.

The cars, made from sheet metal and entirely hand finished are replicas of original toy trains. “I built most of my cars from pictures, “ Stouffer said, “but I also have used old train parts as a starting place and worked from there.”

Stouffer became interested in building train cars in the early 1950s. “I had a collection of big trains as a boy, but like all things, that was scattered and lost. When my children were young, I wanted them to enjoy this same type of train. When I couldn’t find them in stores, I began building them.”

The value of a refurbished toy train covers a wide scale. “I’ve seen a trolley, similar to the one I made, listed at $85,” Stouffer said, “and at the convention last month, there was one train called a ‘Mother’s train’ which was valued at $495. It was complete with a pink engine and it dated back to a time in the 1930s when the Lionel Company made a train for girls.

“That one wasn’t really a high priced train though, when you can find single cars listed for $2,000.”

Editor’s Note: Be sure to store your trains in a clean, dry area with even climate. Emmert stored his trains in a room next to his swimming pool, and the moisture destroyed his trains beyond repair.

Editor’s Note: Word has come to SWD of the passing of long-time T.T.O.S. member Emmert Stouffer. The picture on the left and the article below were taken from the January 1970 Southwestern Division Toy Train Operating Society publication. When Emmert could not find Standard Gauge engines and trains in stores, he built his own.
