Come to Pender Island

Located close to Victoria, Vancouver

and Seattle, the Pender Islands—

the Penders —are friendly, unhurried

and surrounded by beautiful nature:

the perfect place for you to unwind

and relax. Originally Pender was a

single island, but today a tall single-

lane wooden bridge crosses a canal,

which was excavated in 1903 creating

two islands, North and South Pender.

ActivitiesBring your golf clubs and discover Penders’ attractive nine-hole golf course. Or throw a disc on the Pender Island disc golf course, considered one of the prettiest in the world. You can explore the beautiful rocky coastline and bull kelp, sea stars and glistening seals aboard a kayak or Stand-Up Paddleboard. An excellent way to explore the islands is on a bicycle or e-cycle.

HistoryFor millennia, the Coast Salish nations visited the Pender Islands to pick berries and harvest clams, salmon, oysters and other fruits of the sea. Indigenous Culture is present at several middens, the totems at the Community Hall and the 13 Moon Calendar. You can learn about Pender’s Indigenous and colonial history at the Pender Islands Museum.

NatureThe Pender Islands are composed of soft hills covered in coastal forests of tall arbutuses surrounded by towering Douglas Firs. In springtime the island is graced by delicate wildflowers. The rocky coastline features log-rimmed coves and tidal pools teeming with life. You can easily immerse yourself in glorious nature and observe eagles, orcas, and seals. The climate is the best in Canada—snowdrops appear in February!

Places to StayPender Island has a wide range of places to rest your head including a high-end resort, elegant B&B’s, and rustic camping among the trees.

Car Stop Program: Pender Island is proud of its unique program providing rides for hikers and visitors without their own transport, who can wait at designated stops for a passing motorist to pick them up. Motorists arriving at North Pender on BC Ferries can put a green card on their dashboard indicating they’re willing to take foot passengers.
