VILLAGE INFORMATION

Let’s mention the F(alls) word.

For many older people its something to keep quiet about, certainly not to admit to - an embarrassing incident that can cause a person to lose confidence and feel like you have lost your independence. You may not have even mentioned it

to your GP as perhaps you feel it is just part of getting older!

Most falls don’t result in a serious injury – if you watch a rugby or football match on the TV you will see players fall all the time! However, it’s how we cope with them, how they affect us, and how we can try to prevent further falls that is important.

Our strength and balance classes at the Community centre on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons are specialist training programmes led by qualified instructors that can help you to regain confidence after a fall (or if you feel unsteady). We can help you to get stronger, improve your flexibility and co-ordination, and very importantly work to improve your balance. The good news is the exercise programme can help you to reduce or prevent further falls and injury. Falls are not an inevitable part of ageing.

Why not give us a call for a confidential chat and more information about these specialist training programmes which are local, friendly and enjoyable. We have tea and coffee after classes so its also a chance to meet new people in the same position as you.

Ring Kim or Angela on 07512 546480

Please note Classes closed for Easter week commencing 22nd April.

Hagley Parish Council UpdateAt the meeting of the 28th January it was resolved to increase the Parish precept by 2% for 2019/20.

I hope those that were able to attend the AGM found the update on the 2018/19 year both interesting and informative. The meeting covered all aspects of the Parish Council activities as well as updates from the Bromsgrove District Councillors and Worcestershire County Councillor.

The meeting included updates on the Pavilion, budget expenditure, playing field access and the setting of the 2019/20 parish precept. I would like also thank members of the Parish Council for being open and honest in their presentations and thank members of the public for their questions.

As regards the Pavilion replacement roofing contracts, a contractor has been identified and at the time of writing contracts are being prepared and start dates agreed. Discussions started at the beginning of March as regards opening up the playing fields to general public amenity and the Church Street access. HPC is conscious that the fields must be returned to public use to the same standard as before STw’s flood alleviation works. At the same time as discussing the contract details with the roofing contractor management of the Church Street access will be included.

At a recent public meeting there was unanimous support for Hagley Library to be supported by HPC in the event that WCC library budget reductions could see the library staff and opening hours reduced. As part of on-going commitment by HPC roofing and guttering works have been completed.

Once the outcome of the library consultation is known HPC and WCC will be having further discussions.

Leading, full mask Theatre Company, Vamos, return to Artrix on 10 April with A Brave Face. Music at Artrix this April includes Bromsgrove Concerts: Piatti String Quartet on 5 April, The Lindisfarne Story – an evening of classic songs, behind the scenes stories and archive video from original members Billy Mitchell and Ray Laidlaw on 11 April and sizzling hot ensemble The Urban Folk Quartet on 19 April.

There’s a double bill of mind-boggling illusions from Morgan and West on 25 April, with their Utterly Spiffing Spectacular Magic Show for Kids (and childish grown-ups!) at 2pm (age 5+), followed by Morgan & West: Parlour Tricks at 8pm (ages 10+). The family fun continues with a live stage adaptation of the much loved pre-school book Dear Zoo on 28 & 29 April – book soon to avoid disappointment as tickets are selling fast.

VILLAGE INFORMATION

Hagley Country Dancers The club continues to enjoy good support from members and we have had very successful sessions over the winter months. We take our Easter break after the April 15th meeting and resume on May 13th, as May 6th is a Bank Holiday. By popular request, we are extending the summer term to July 22nd, when we will hold our annual garden party. We look forward to a summer of enjoyable dancing and conversation and, as ever, we would be pleased to welcome new members.

There is no charge for a first visit, subsequently we ask for £2 per session. There is no joining or annual fee.

There is plenty of parking via Chapel Street.

For more information, ring June Waterhouse, 01562 700639

Hagley RunnersHagley Runners free community running group Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 19:00-20:00 Meeting point: Village car park not shoppers car park near library. All abilities of running and find us on Facebook.

HAGLEY RAMBLERS SCOUT GROUPWe are really pleased to announce that our new premises are now being built! As some of you may know, our old Scout Hut finally came to its end in January 2018 and since then we have been holding meetings every night of the week either at Haybridge, the RC School or Community Centre. It has been very tough and has made us realise how important our meeting space is to our Group in terms of binding us together and having a sense of belonging.

Our new premises will be much larger with two 100m2 halls, a meeting room, kitchen and facilities. We have increased the size in part to allow our Group to grow but also, very importantly, for a wider community purpose. Meeting places are a fantastic way of bringing communities together and forging supportive and positive links between various groups.Community cohesion is critical to the quality of life of local people ensuring that we all live and work together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding. We would love to see our new premises being used by all members of the community for a wide range of activities and would like to invite any interested groups to get in touch with us.

The new premises are due to be completed early September 2019. If you would like to see the plans please visit our website www.hagleyramblers.com. If you would like to get in touch please e-mail Sue Corlett via e-mail on [email protected].

VILLAGE INFORMATION

IMPORTANT NOTICEHagley Community Association thought it would be useful if villagers realise that the Community Centre carpark is private land and for the use of hirers of the Centre. The Association leaves the barrier open in order to try and

support village parking but if a hirer wants to close the barrier they shouldn’t be subject to verbal abuse from people trying to park there who are not

attending an event.

If this continues sadly the Association will have to permanently close the barrier to ensure hirers who have paid to use the centre and park for their event can do so. Notices are up and have been for some time on both the barrier and Centre. We hope villagers will support hirers, if requested, by moving their cars rather than us to have to close the carpark barrier on a

permanent basis.

Hagley Theatre Group

While the cast has been chosen and rehearsals for ‘Hairspray’ are already well underway in preparation for October’s show, Hagley Theatre Group is still celebrating the success of its last performance.

After a successful run in October 2018, the production of ‘Half a Sixpence’ has been nominated for the Best Youth Award at this year’s regional National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) Awards.

NODA reviewers were extremely impressed with the performance, commenting on fun, well-rehearsed choreography and excellent side stage discipline from the cast and stand-out performances from the lead actors.

The Award is the third nomination for Hagley Theatre Group after productions of Beauty and the Beast and Into the Woods won the same award in 2010 and 2015.

Members of the cast and production team will be attending the awards ceremony, with their fingers crossed, on Sunday 14th April at Stourbridge Town Hall.

We want to wish our youth section the best of luck and whatever happens, we’re extremely proud of the absolute knock-out that was ‘Half a Sixpence’ and think the whole cast would be truly deserving of the Award after their hard work, dedication and commitment.

Hairspray will be running at Hagley Community Centre on 16-19 October, ticket information will be available soon. In the meantime, you can contact us at [email protected] or to be the first to hear all of our announcements, follow @hagleytheatregroup on Instagram and Facebook.

VILLAGE INFORMATION

Village LadiesOur advertised speaker was unfortunately unable to join us due to ill health so another speaker was swiftly found and David Clark from Worcester gave us an interesting talk about the censorship of music at the BBC. We had a real trip down Memory Lane, recalling some of the old songs that had been banned over the years, fortunately criteria for this censorship has been relaxed in more recent years.

Our only April meeting due to the Easter holidays is on April 9th when Caroline Bellhouse, a Veterinary nurse, will be telling us about the sanctuary she set up for Orang-utans in Borneo. This should be a most interesting and unusual talk. She has called her talk “Orange Hairies and other Friends”.

HAGLEY W.I.‘Cuddly Dudley!’ – or maybe not? Crisis, domestic abuse, homelessness? We have supported a local women’s Refuge for years and in February Karen

Turnock of CHADD (Churches Housing Association of Dudley and District) told us of the wide scope of – and the need for – their work. For domestic abuse – which occurs at all ages, affects both women and men and is often not ‘visible’, they provide a safety net, supported living and the possibility to move on. After her eye-opening talk, we know how best we can support their work and the Refuge.

Our members keep fit with Walking Netball, several enjoyed a delicious Soup Lunch with Blackwell and Burcot WI and we have been involved with a Beginners Art Course and a fun, creative Rag Rug Workshop.

The monthly Craft Group keeps active knitting blankets for a fistula clinic in Ethiopia and making jackets and hats for the Premature Baby Unit at Russells Hall.

On Monday 8 April, ‘A Sideways Look’ is Wendy and Roger Pepper’s inspiring presentation about macular degeneration and the active life that Wendy leads with it and on Monday 13 May we have our Annual Meeting.

We meet on the second Monday of the month at 2.00 pm in the Community Centre. We are always happy to welcome visitors and new members - so why not give WI a try?!

VILLAGE NEWS

Hagley String OrchestraThe purpose of HSO is for string players to enjoy making music together, and to discover new repertoire. With little known works by Tippett and Hindemith this term, we have certainly achieved the latter aim, and my personal thanks and congratulations to every player for the considerable success and satisfaction in both works.

Most of us also were learning unfamiliar music with Jean-Baptiste Rameau’s Concert No. 6. The French composer Rameau (1683-1764) was only aged 2 when JS Bach and Handel were born. He lived during the reigns of Louis XIV (d. 1715) and his son Louis XV (d. 1774), and he became the most famous harpsichordist of his day, when, at the age of 62, he was appointed ‘Compositeur du Cabinet du Roi’ with a large pension. Rameau was very tall and thin with a rather raucous voice and nicknamed ‘A walking organ-pipe’! He was an excellent violinist as well as a keyboard player, and his Concert No. 6 is a string arrangement of some harpsichord pieces. The 1st movement ‘La Poule’ describes the clucking of a hen, and I told the players that when they reached the final cadence they would have laid an egg …..

Our Summer Term begins of Tuesday 30 April, and includes Mozart Piano Concerto in A K414. Please contact Haydn Thomas 01562 885 252; [email protected] for more information.

Hagley Historical and Field SocietyOur next meeting at St Saviour’s Church Hall is on Tuesday 2nd April 2019 at 8.00pm when we will have a presentation by Derek Clarke RIBA entitled “The Restoration of the Perseus and Andromeda Fountain at Witley Court. Derek, a retired architect, has visited us on a number of occasions to talk on topics such

as the Birmingham Back to Backs and the restoration of the Old Royal Naval College at Greenwich. He was the Project Architect in both cases and his depth of knowledge is matched by his presentation style which is both educational and entertaining.

If you have been to Witley Court in recent years you will have seen the glorious sight of the fountain performing. It was built by the Earl of Dudley in 1860 but due to the declining fortunes of the family the Court was sold after the First World War. This was the start of generations of neglect and after a disastrous fire in 1937 the estate was broken up and the house subsequently stripped of its fittings and furnishings. The fountain fell into disuse and decay. There is a story that Bing Crosby once tried to buy it! Derek will tell us how it was brought back to life.

Visitors are most welcome at all our events – see hhfs.org.uk for details and contacts.

VILLAGE INFORMATION

The blue skies and warm sun we enjoyed in February reminded us of the pleasures of gardening and of communing with gardeners. Two things were very clear from our AGM on 27th February - that 2019 promises to be a busy and rewarding year for Club members, and that attracting new members is a high priority.

On 24th April we will welcome Jeff Bale, a retired professor of environmental biology from the University of Birmingham, to talk about a voracious garden pest: “No Sex Please, we’re Aphids” is the title of his talk.

Looking further down the year, our meeting on 22nd May will host Rob and Diane Cole for a talk about summer perennials. Then, in June, we have two field trips, one a day trip to Powis Castle and gardens on Saturday the 8th, the other an evening visit to Whitlenge near Hartlebury on the 26th.

If the outing to Powis Castle is well-supported it is hoped to arrange another on 7th September taking in Aston pottery and gardens to the west of Oxford and Waterperry Gardens to the east. For this the aim would be to fill a 50-seater bus.

Monthly meetings are at St Saviour’s Hall, normally on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Visitors are always very welcome.

Hagley Neighbourhood Watch There has been some good news in respect of tackling crime; since the last Watch update it has been reported that members of a gang that carried out telephone fraud scams nationally including across Worcestershire and the West Midlands have been arrested and sentenced to various years in jail and that Bromsgrove District has been given a massive boost with commitment for an additional 25 new officers for the district being promised.

These two recent reports are very welcome indeed. The extra police officers will add to the existing response officers based in Bromsgrove including Hagley. As regards the telephone fraud scams again very welcome news but let the reader beware that undoubtedly there are others still active and vigilance at all time is required.

Whilst good news I have asked for a meeting with Sajid Javid MP in respect of crime and the fear of crime.

Regular reports are received of suspicious behaviour either by certain vehicles driving slowly around Hagley or individuals that appear to be taking too much interest in other people’s property. If you do see something suspicious report it to 101. It might turn out to be entirely innocent but better to be safe than sorry. Of course you can ALSO post it on the Hagley Neighbourhood Watch page. By ‘liking’ the page will keep you informed as when anything new is posted.

Information has been requested in respect of setting up a Community Speed Watch scheme.

Steve Colella and Roger Seabury joint Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators.

BROMSGROVE DISTRICT COUNCIL UPDATE• A council tax rise of 2.99% was approved as part of the 2019/20 budget, agreed at the

February Council meeting.

• The New Homes Bonus Community Fund for 2019 will be £74,000 for the district. Community groups can apply for a share of the funding for local projects during the spring.

• We have written to our County Councillor asking to work with her on applying for some £44,000 received as part of the divisional highways fund to be invested in minor highways schemes in Hagley.

• We have written to the Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid, taking him up on his recent public statement of how important it was for him to work with local councillors and administrations to make sure Hagley gets the attention it deserves. We’ve highlighted the major issues in the village such as traffic congestion and threats to libraries and buses, and asking him what actions he can take to address these concerns.

• National Government are allowing local councils to retain a higher percentage of their business rates and Worcestershire Councils have decided to spend it on reducing social care by reducing social isolation. We are investigating how we can bid for that money to be spent in locally and point of use in Hagley.

Bromsgrove District Councillors Steve Colella (Hagley West) and Rachel Jenkins (Hagley East)

At our Meeting on Friday, 12th April, David Gleeson is our visiting Artist, who is coming to demonstrate “Still Life”. David studied Visual Art at Aberystwyth University, and painting at Wolverhampton, and on occasions

has been Artist-in-Residence at Wolverhampton School of Fine Art. The subjects he chooses for his Still Life paintings are quite unusual. This should be a very interesting demonstration.

Looking ahead to our May Meeting, Glynis Wilson is coming to introduce us to Chinese Painting.

New Ringers showing us the ropes Spring should be well in the air by the time you read this. Our

bell-ringing band is moving on a-pace, winter coughs and colds behind us. In January, 14 Girl Guides came to the tower for “look and ring”. One of them Isobel has joined us and is well on the way to mastering the art of ringing. I do wish I could have learned to handle the bell rope as quickly as she has done. We now have 4 young ringers. Alice, Isobel, Robert and Sam. It would be good to get some more young people. It can be a most enthralling pastime. Us olds now meet for an extra night each month to try and master the Plain Bob Doubles method. This is where the 6 bells ring in a different order for 120 changes. Robert has already mastered this when 5 other ringers from the Worcestershire & District Change Ringing Association (WDCRA) joined him at St. John’s to ring this method for a quarter peal. Now he is helping us at our extra monthly practice night.

Our new bell ropes which have kindly been donated by the Friends of St John’s church were dedicated at the parish communion service in February. A team from the WDCRA will be joining us to fit the ropes when the weather gets a bit warmer. The new ropes have “terylene tops” with standard hemp rope spliced into the bottom section of each rope. They should last longer than our current set of ropes.
