Tahiti Video Premiere - David Kory and his catamaran crew took a bunch of
video during our Tahiti Sailing Adventure in January. It has been very nicely ed-
ited, with a Tahitian sound track, into a 30-minute DVD. There is footage of sailing
amongst the islands and lagoons, life aboard a catamaran, snorkeling (yes, under-
water video!), local music and dancing, and more. We’ll show it on the big screen
(10 feet across) almost like a real theater. If you would like to see how life on a cat
or cruising in Tahiti can be, come and spend an hour with us Bring a snack to share
if you like, as this is a casual event, and of course its free! Just let us know you’re
coming, so we choose the right size room and have a chair for you to sit in…

Housekeeping
Boat Updates -
Lionheart - Has new interior cushions (Thanks to Brandy’s hard work and Matt’s Grandma’s sewing
skills!)
Rocky - Also has new interior cushions
Spindrift - Has been completely re-finished on the inside, including woodwork, hardware and cushions.
She also has a new hot-water-heater and all new cookware, dinner-ware, etc. In all we have
about $6,000 and 180 man-hours into this boat. Please treat it as if you had put the time
and money in yourselves - in a way, you have!
Morning Dew - Has all new cookware, dinner-ware, silverware - everything you need to enjoy an over
night stay on the bay! As with Spindrift’s new equipment, please take care of it. If every
thing goes back into the cupboards clean and dry, it will stay new and clean.
Checkouts - If you want to be able to go sailing at your convenience, make last minute reservations and have a
broader selection of boats to choose from, make sure you get checked out on every boat. The Checkouts on the
Calendar are free, as always. This year we will be charging $25/boat for Private Checkouts. Last year we found
ourselves doing so many private checkouts that it was not cost effective and other important jobs were put on hold.
By charging $25 per boat we can bring in an instructor to do the checkout for you - and even do multiple boats in
one day. If you know of another member who needs the same checkout(s), feel free to split the cost between you.
Boat Moves - The following boats have moved. Please check your reservation so you can find your boat.
3602 Spindrift is now in BYC F - 11
3401 Pink Slip is now in BYC G - 14
3009 Risky is moving to Marina Bay, E-208 as of May 1st.
Fleet Changes - 30’ Boats in the 29’ Fleet?! It’s true. Robbie J has already been a member of the 29’ fleet for a
few months and Risky will be moving into the 29’ fleet on May 1st. If you are BCC certified, feel free to sign up
for checkouts on both of these boats - they are no longer out of your fleet!
Boats for Sale - The following boats are for sale - let us know if you or anyone you know is interested in owning
one:
Boris - 1977 Cal 27’ - $4,500
Natasha - 1976 Cal 27’ - $5,000
Watch the weather! - We’d like to commend Tradewinds Sailors for making good choices the past weekend - the
morning was looking very nice, but the afternoon forecast called for 45 knot winds, which turned into 55 knots by
the time it was all over. All but two boats were back at the dock with checkout sheets turned in by 1pm. This
shows that people knew the forecast and adjusted to changing conditions by cutting their day short. Thanks to all
of our members for using S-A(tmosphere)-F-E-T-O-G-O and staying safe!
Spring Fever! It’s getting crazy - everyone is heading back out on the water after a winter of light or only occa-
sional sailing. We are also turning out a lot of new sailors. With the summer winds coming up and people re-
discovering sailing, we need to address some deficiencies and keep our reputation on and around the bay a positive
one. Walking the docks, Butch and Matt have been noticing many problems such as: Fenders in the water, incor-
rect knots, dock-lines not attached, halyards not secured away from the mast, cleanliness issues - just to name a
few. We need to step it up a notch and remember to plan enough time at the end of the day for proper stowage and
cleaning. We’ve also taken note of the general level of docking skill. Please remember to shake off the rust by
practicing your docking and motoring skills before a day of sailing! Remember rule #4: “Look good doing it!” -
pick those fenders up and tie them to the stern rail when you get under-way so they aren’t bobbing along next to
the boat as you sail. That is not the correct way to wash a fender!

A WARM WINTER WEEK IN THE CARIBBEAN
Join us in the British Virgin Islands! Enjoy 9 days on one of our huge 47-foot cata-
marans in this sailor’s paradise. Crystal clear waters, boulder-formed caves, picture-
perfect beaches, easy deep-water island-hops, consistent tradewind breezes, line-of-
sight navigation in completely protected waters and numerous anchorages for eve-
nings ashore make this the ideal paradise for novice and experienced sailors alike.
Discover luxury cruising on a big
cat with 4 private cabins, 4 private
bathrooms, cockpits big enough for 2
dozen and plenty of room on the
sun deck. Stable sailing, no rocking at night, push-button anchoring, and all the ameni-
ties you could wish for. This is a winter get-a-way you don’t want to miss, and a great
way to recover from the holidays!
David Kory and Tradewinds are offering this fabulous sailing vacation for the amazing
low price of just $2,395 per person, which includes the yachts, airfare from San Fran-
cisco and local transfers- everything but food. (A big sailing magazine offers a 10-day
trip, without airfare, for $4000 per person!) You are welcome to participate in sailing
the yachts, or you can simply relax and enjoy the ride. A deposit of $895 per person
guarantees your spot, with the balance due by November 1. This trip, like all of David’s
adventures, will sell out quickly. Don’t Delay! Contact David Kory: david-
We are always looking for articles for our newsletter We love to publish articles from our instructors, students and members. If you have a sailing-related experience
you’d like to share with us in writing, we’ll happily put it in the newsletter. Pictures are a huge plus, as well! E-
mail any newsletter related material to Matt.

LADIES on the BAY!! - WATCH
OUT!!
Fifteen Tradewinds women and guests
kicked of the sailing season with a Ladies'
Sail to Oakland for lunch on Tuesday, April
22. Due to our need to get on the water and
interest generated at the Oakland Strictly
Sailing Boat Show, we took two Tradewinds
boats full of women across the Bay to the
Pasta Pelican in Alameda, across from Jack
London Square. The restaurant had a large
slip that comfortably accommodated Galen
and Pink Slip.
The weather forecast for the day was for a small craft advisory with winds to 32 knots in the after-
noon and rain. We had a fun run across The
Slot in the morning with 19 knots winds.
Galen easily kept a lead over Pink Slip.
(The Pink Slip crew may have not known
that there was actually a race in progress.)
But, as Galen got behind Treasure Island
and the winds dropped to 8 knots, Pink Slip
graciously slipped by and never looked
back.
Our honorary skipper on Pink Slip, who
manned up to the “beyond the call of duty”
assignment, was Chuck Farrell. Chuck
took advantage of the time on the water to
show his crew the basics of sailing and
how to use the nautical charts. Thanks
Chuck! You can sail with the women anytime.
We all expected a quick run home, but we motored out from under the Bay Bridge to find the cen-
tral bay looking more acceptable to water skiing than sailing. We did find a little wind and were
able to sail for about 20 minutes. No complaints though—the sun was still peaking through the
clouds, the rain was off to the north, no other sailboats in sight on the Bay, and the companionship
was great. A perfect “sick day” from work.
