News from the Guidance Department

NCAA Workshop

This year’s NCAA presentation on January 18

from 5:30-6:15 is for students and parents of all

grades who are interested in finding out more

about playing sports in college. The focus will be

on the recruitment process with speakers that in-

clude college and high school coaches and former

NCAA athletes. Registration for this event is re-

quired at the following link:

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/attleboro-high-schools-

ncaa-workshop-tickets-30219970746

AP Exams

It is that time of year to begin thinking about AP ex-

ams! Even though AP exams are taken in May, much

of our preparatory work begins now! Students received

their AP bills at the beginning of December. Payment

begins the week of January 9-13 in the Guidance Cen-

ter. Students should see Ms. Little or Mr. Parrillo on

January 3 if they need any assistance.

Alumni Day

The Guidance Department is excited about hosting

Alumni Day! This year’s date will be Friday, June 9

and will target our junior class. We have already heard

back from a number of alums who are excited about

returning for the event. We are hoping to reach as

many individuals as possible to make this event a suc-

cess. We would love to have representation from alum-

ni who are in college, the military and the work force.

The department is updating our database of alumni

contacts, and we could use your help! If you know of

any alumni who may be interested, please email Julie

Little at [email protected].

Opportunities Fair

The School to Career Office, the Guidance Department

and the Office of Special Education will be hosting the

fourth annual Opportunities Fair on February 28 from

8:30-10:00. Area businesses, colleges, military

branches and community support services will be rep-

resented to assist students with their post-secondary

endeavors. Seniors will be invited to this event based

on their responses to a survey in advisory. Any student

who has questions about the event should see Robbi

Scruggs in the School to Career Office or Julie Little in

the Guidance Department.

Mock Interviews

The Guidance Department is hosting individual Mock Inter-

views after school on Wednesday, January 25 for students

whose post-secondary plans include college, work, or the

military. Interested students must see their guidance coun-

selor to sign up for a mock interview in order to practice

their skills before sitting for a real interview. Space is lim-

ited, so interviews are first-come, first-served. Parents, if

you think this would be a good opportunity for your student,

please encourage him or her to take the first step by seeing

the guidance counselor to register, as this best replicates real

-world conditions.

Guidance Department Upcoming Events

The Guidance Department is excited to announce our addi-

tional winter and spring events:

TDA - Driver Education at Attleboro High School

Join the over 1000 families that choose Teachers Driv-

ing Academy as the driver education program for their

child. Quality classroom instruction and the conven-

ience of on-site classes make TDA the perfect choice!

Students aged 15 years, nine months and older are eli-

gible to take driver education classes. In order to earn

a driver’s education certificate, the state of Massachu-

setts requires students to take 30 hours of classroom

instruction, 12 hours of driving instruction, and six

hours of driving observation; parents must also take a

two hour parent class. Both the student and parent

classroom instruction will take place at the high

school; the driving instruction will take place off site.

See the schedule below for the remaining session

dates. The cost of the classroom instruction is $80.00.

Science and Public Policy

In Mr. Finale and Mr. Weinstein’s course, Science and

Public Policy, students choose a scientific, technological,

health, or other issue in the school community that has po-

litical, social and/or economic impacts. Based on their re-

searched topic, students then begin an action project to at-

tempt to solve the problem. Current topics include cyber

security, recycling at AHS, testing water, School Farm-to-

Table, and climate change.

One group of students in Mr. Finale and Mr. Weinstein’s

Science and Public Policy class are working to improve

recycling at AHS. Plans include getting recycling bins in

the cafeterias and informing students and teachers as to

what items are and are not recyclable. So far we’ve in-

formed the students in our class in Trimester One about

which items can be recycled and we’d like to use the pic-

ture below as a classroom poster so we can put it in every

class to continue informing students and teachers. We hope

you will join us in improving recycling efforts at AHS in

the New Year!

Another group’s initiative is an

effort to ban polystyrene in the

Attleboro schools. In Attle-

boro, polystyrene is most com-

monly seen in lunch rooms,

where service on “Styrofoam”

trays is the norm. Working

from the group’s findings on polystyrene’s harmful effects,

efforts have begun to discuss the possibility of our conces-

sionaire switching to a biodegradable tray starting next

school year. The community’s assistance and enthusiasm

would help greatly.

ative, please go to the website:

AHS Mitten Tree

During the month of December, students and staff gen-

erously donated over 234 hats, mittens, gloves and

scarves and hung them on the Mitten Tree in Student

Services on the Balcony of Attleboro High School. The

items collected were donated locally to the Family Re-

source Center serving the Attleboro Community in col-

laboration with the Student Council’s annual “Homeless

for a Night” effort in collecting winter clothing for

homeless members of the community.

Ms. Thibodeau’s freshmen English Class was the class

to collect the most items and enjoyed hot chocolate and

cookies for their donations. The students of Mrs. Car-

penter and Ms. Spina’s 12+ Program also donated many

items as well as seniors Emily Yarboro and Tiffany Ko-

valski.

Thanks to all for generously showing your Blue Pride

spirit in helping keep our community warm this winter!

AHS Preschool

The preschool children have been learning about their

community and how to become active members of socie-

ty. For the past two months they have been collecting

plastic bottle caps for the Caps for Chemo charity. They

have collected enough caps to give 2 children a free

chemo treatment! Congratulations my friends!

Tattletale Yearbook 2017

Dear Parent/Guardian

Senior year comes so quickly. It is an exciting and special

time for students and families. An important event that

precedes Graduation occurs on the last day of school for

seniors, Yearbook Dedication Day. Students receive their

Attleboro High School Tattletale and peek inside to find

their picture and remember times gone by at AHS. We

would like to provide you with the opportunity to be part

of that special moment. This cherished keepsake could

include a message from you. The Senior Parent section of

the yearbook offers advertisement space in various sizes

from one eighth of a page to a full page. You can congrat-

ulate your child and surprise them with a unique message

that reminds them of how special they are.

Placing an ad is easier than ever since you can create your

own message online. Personalize the message with a fa-

vorite photo or have the entire family add their well wish-

es. Follow the instructions on the next page and create a

lasting memento for your family.
