News and Events from the Guidance Department

Highly Selective College Admission Panel We are excited that college admission officers from Harvard, Boston College, Boston University, and Northeastern University will be joining us to share advice on applying to highly selective colleges. The presentation is different every year and is aimed at any student looking to go to a competitive college. This year the questions will be generated by Attleboro stu-dents and selected by College Admissions Officers. If you are applying to a competitive institution, this event is a must! The event will take place on April 10 from 5:30-6:30 PM in Bray Auditorium. This event is open to all families. Please see our flyer for more information. Registration is required at the fol-lowing link: https://highlyselectivepanel-2019.eventbrite.com Boys and Girls State We were fortunate that the American Legion and the Women’s Auxiliary were able to sponsor twelve Attle-boro students to attend the prestigious Boys and Girls State Conference in June at Stonehill College. Stu-dents were selected based on outstanding academic performance, potential for leadership and commitment to after school activities. We had a number of well qualified candidates apply for this leadership oppor-tunity. Students were asked to write an essay about leadership and interview with a selection committee. We are pleased to announce this year's Boys and Girls State representatives are Jessica Matheson, Ashley Pierce, Parker Sweeney, Julia Willis, Derrik Rivet, Emily Gittle, Samuel Bloch, Jacob Kane, Jenna Gittle, Camille Perry, Gabrielle Lauzier and Victoria Greaves. Congratulations to all of the 2019 Boys and Girls State representatives! Massachusetts Youth Leadership Forum Each year the Massachusetts Youth Leadership Foun-dation sponsors a three day leadership conference for Grade 10 students held at Lasell College in June. Each school in Massachusetts can send only one Grade 10 student based on demonstrated and potential leadership ability. Candidates are chosen by a commit-tee that bases decisions on demonstrated leadership at Attleboro High School. We are happy to announce William Runey, III as this year’s MassSTAR delegate.

Costa Rica Excursion 2019 Ten students enjoyed a trip of a lifetime to Costa Rica over February Break 2019. The trip was led by Mrs. Angela Larson and Mr. Christopher Neves, both science teachers here at AHS. The students enjoyed a week of waterfalls and volcanoes while learning about how an entire country survives using only sustainable energy and natural re-sources. Students enjoyed adventures in zip lining, snor-keling and hiking the foothills of the Arenal Volcano. Oth-er activities included a tour of a coffee plantation, a cook-ing class to learn how to make empanadas and a hike to the bottom of the La Fortuna Waterfall where students were allowed to swim in the ice cold water at the base. Af-ter seven days in 90 degree weather students returned with a passion for travel and memories that will last a lifetime.
