広角的な考古学The Wide Lens in Archaeology: Honoring Brian Hesse’s Contributions to Anthropological ArchaeologyArchaeobiology, 2

Edited by Justin Lev-Tov, et al.

This book is a Gedenkschrift in memory of Brian Hesse, a scholar of archaeology, a writer of alliterative and punned publication titles, and an accomplished ama-teur photographer. Most chapters share an Old World geographic setting, focus-ing either on Europe or the Middle East. The topics are diverse, with the majority discussing animal bones, as was Hesse’s specialization, but some take a non-faunal perspective related to the problems with which Hesse grappled. The volume is also broad in temporal scope, ranging from Neolithic Iran to early Medieval England, and it addresses theoretical matters as well as methodological innovations includ-ing taphonomy and the history of computers in zooarchaeology. Several of the essays are direct revisits to, inspirations from, or extensions of Hesse’s own research.

In “Moses the Egyptian”—the centerpiece of Rigorism of Truth, the German philosopher Hans Blumenberg addresses two defining fig-ures in the intellectual history of the twentieth century: Sigmund Freud and Hannah Arendt. Unpublished during his lifetime, this essay analyzes Freud’s Moses and Monotheism (1939) and Arendt’s Eichmann in Jerusalem (1963), and discovers in both a principled ri-gidity that turns into recklessness because it is blind to the politics of the unknown.

The focus of the text is on Bergson’s conception of philosophy as the discipline that seeks to ‘think beyond the human condition’. Not that we are caught up in an existential predicament when the appeal is made to think beyond the human condition; rather that restricting philosophy to the human condition fails to appreciate the extent to which we are not simply creatures of habit and automatism, but also organisms involved in a creative evolution of becoming.

    過激な犠牲Radical SacrificeBy Terry Eagleton

In this analysis, Terry Eagleton makes a compelling argument that the idea of sac-rifice has long been misunderstood. Pursuing the complex lineage of sacrifice in a lyrical discourse, Eagleton focuses on the Old and New Testaments, offering a virtuosic analysis of the crucifixion, while drawing together a host of philosophers, theologians, and texts—from Hegel, Nietzsche, and Derrida to the Aeneid and The Wings of the Dove. Brilliant meditations on death and eros, Shakespeare and St. Paul, irony and hybridity explore the meaning of sacrifice in modernity, casting off misperceptions of barbarity to reconnect the radical idea to politics and revolution.

ハイデガーの創造的著述Heidegger’s Poietic Writings: From Contributions to Philosophy to The EventStudies in Continental Thought

    By Daniela Vallega-Neu

Daniela Vallega-Neu’s book is a landmark achievement in Heidegger scholarship. Engaging the development of Heidegger’s non-public writings on the event be-tween 1936 and 1941, Daniela Vallega-Neu reveals what Heidegger’s private writings kept hidden. Vallega-Neu takes readers on a journey through these volumes, which are not philosophical works in the traditional sense as they read more like frag-ments, collections of notes, reflections, and expositions. In them, Vallega-Neu sees Heidegger searching for a language that does not simply speak about being, but rather allows a sense of being to emerge in his thinking and saying. She focuses on striking shifts in the tone and movement of Heidegger’s thinking during these im-portant years. Skillfully navigating the unorthodox and intimate character of these writings, Vallega-Neu provides critical insights into questions of attunement, lan-guage, the body, and historicity in Heidegger’s thinking.

In this magisterial late essay by Derrida, what the reader soon discov-ers is in part a conversation with his former student, as well as an opening for a new reflection on our current ecological and politi-cal crises that are all the more urgent today where the possibility of giving ourselves death as a human race and the end of the world is now, within an era of climate change, more real than ever.

Cosmism was developed by the Russian philosopher Nikolai Fe-dorov in the late nineteenth century; he believed that humans had an ethical obligation not only to care for the sick but to cure death using science and technology; outer space was the territory of both immortal life and infinite resources.

アジアのキリストJesus in AsiaBy R. S. Sugirtharajah

Reconstructions of Jesus occurred in Asia long before the Western search for the historical Jesus began in earnest. This enterprise sprang up in seventh-century Chi-na and seventeenth-century India, encouraged by the patronage and openness of the Chinese and Indian imperial courts. While the Western quest was largely a Prot-estant preoccupation, in Asia the search was marked by its diversity: participants included Hindus, Jains, Muslims, Catholics, and members of the Church of the East.

During the age of European colonialism, Jesus was first seen by many Asians as a tribal god of the farangis, or white Europeans. But as his story circulated, Asians remade Jesus, at times appreciatively and at other times critically. R. S. Sugirtharajah demonstrates how Buddhist and Taoist thought, combined with Christian insights, led to the creation of the Chinese Jesus Sutras of late antiquity, and explains the importance of a biography of Jesus composed in the sixteenth-century court of the Mughal emperor Akbar. He also brings to the fore the reconstructions of Jesus during the Chinese Taiping revolution, the Korean Minjung uprising, and the Indian and Sri Lankan anti-colonial movements.

Vatican I: The Council and the Making of the Ultramontane Church

    264 pages 2018:05 Belknap Pr.Hardback 9780674979987 US$24.95

In this book John W. O’Malley draws us into the bitter controversies over papal infallibility that at one point seemed destined to rend the church in two. Archbishop Henry Manning was the principal driv-ing force for the definition, and Lord Acton was his brilliant coun-terpart on the other side. But they shrink in significance alongside Pope Pius IX, whose zeal for the definition was so notable that it raised questions about the very legitimacy of the council. Entering the fray were politicians such as Gladstone and Bismarck. The grow-ing tension in the council played out within the larger drama of the seizure of the Papal States by Italian forces and its seemingly inevi-table consequence, the conquest of Rome itself. Largely as a result of the council and its aftermath, the Catholic Church became more pope-centered than ever before. In the terminology of the period, it became ultramontane.

Rather than a “dark age” in which female monasticism withered under such factors as the assertion of male religious authority, the secularization of its institutions, and the precipitous decline of their intellectual and spiritual life, Vanderputten finds that the post-Car-olingian period witnessed a remarkable adaptability among these women. Through texts, objects, archaeological remains, and iconog-raphy, Dark Age Nunneries offers scholars of religion, medieval his-tory, and gender studies new ways to understand the experience of women of faith within the Church and across society during this era.

The Suharto (1966–98) government of Indonesia and the Mahathir (1981–2003) gov-ernment of Malaysia both launched Islamization programs, upgrading and creating religious institutions. The author argues that, while generally ulamas, or religious teachers, had to support state ideologies, they sometimes succeeded in “capturing” the state by influencing policies in their favor. The author builds his argument on strong fieldwork data, especially interviews, and he engages in critical discussion of comparative politics paradigms and the concept of capture.

First attested to in the tenth century C.E. and attributed by some to the patriarch Abraham him-self, Sefer Yeṣirah claims that the world was created by the powers of the decimal number system and the twenty two letters of the Hebrew alphabet. This short, enigmatic treatise was considered ca-nonical by Jewish philosophers and Kabbalists and has fascinated Western thinkers and writers as diverse as Leibnitz and Borges.

Buddhist Visual Cultures, Rhetoric, and Narrative in Late Burmese Wall Paintings

    248 pages 2018:01 Hong Kong U.P.Hardback 9789888390885 US$55.00

Step into a Burmese temple built between the late seventeenth and early nineteenth centuries and you are surrounded by a riot of color and imagery. The majority of the highly detailed wall paintings dis-plays Buddhist biographical narratives, inspiring the devotees to fol-low the Buddha’s teachings. Alexandra Green goes one step further to consider the temples and their contents as a whole, arguing that the wall paintings mediate the relationship between the architec-ture and the main Buddha statues in the temples.
