Changing the Present—Discouraging Thoughts & Deep Needs

1.CHOOSE TO REINFORCE BIBLICAL BELIEFS.i. Our feelings arise from how WE PERCEIVE & THINK ABOUT events.

For as…[a man] thinks within himself, so is he (Proverbs 23:7a, ASV, The Bible)


…In order to be secure, I must have a partner who loves me & cares for me...

…It's terrible when things don't go the way I have planned, it makes me frustrated...

…It hurts deeply when I am rejected. I feel as if I have no value & no worth...


1.CHOOSE TO REINFORCE BIBLICAL BELIEFS.ii. Unbiblical beliefs PLAY REPEATEDLY in our minds & prevent us from living GOD'S INTENDED LIFESTYLE.

So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. (Ephesians 4:17-18, The Bible)


The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:4-5, The Bible)


1.CHOOSE TO REINFORCE BIBLICAL BELIEFS.iii. Confront unbiblical beliefs when they ARISE, with CORRESPONDING biblical beliefs. …I have all the love I need to function effectively in Christ Jesus my Lord. He is my security and I am complete in Him. (Hebrews 13:5)

…God who provides, is at work in my life. He turns every setback into an opportunity, therefore I can trust Him to work out everything according to His will. (Romans 8:28-29)

…Rejection & failure do not make me a less worthwhile person. God values me more than a million galaxies! (Psalms 139:14-16, 8:3-8)


Jesus answered, ''Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." John 4:13-14, The Bible


2. DRINK DEEPLY FROM GOD'S LOVE i. Our deep yearnings were put there BY GOD. ii. We were meant to draw our deepest needs FROM GOD in a WORSHIP RELATIONSHIP


''Therefore I bring charges against you again," declares the LORD.

''And I will bring charges against your children's children. Cross over to the coasts of Kittim and look, send to Kedar and observe closely; see if there has ever been anything like this: Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their Glory for worthless idols. Be appalled at this, O heavens, and shudder with great horror," declares the LORD. ''My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. (Jeremiah 2:9-13, The Bible)


2. DRINK DEEPLY FROM GOD'S LOVE ii. We were meant to draw our deepest needs FROM GOD in a WORSHIP RELATIONSHIP

Security - I want to be safe, protected, love with a love that will never go away.

Self-worth - I need to know that I am valued and of worth.

Significance - I need to know that my life means something, and is of significance in this world.


2. DRINK DEEPLY FROM GOD'S LOVE iii. Our yearnings will drive us to SEARCH but will only be SATISFIED in Jesus Christ

For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority. (Colossians 2:9-10, The Bible)


I knew you before you were conceived. I chose you when I planned creation. You were not a mistake for all your days were written in my book. I will never leave you nor forsake you! (Jer 1:4-5, Eph 1:11-12, Ps 139:15-16, Heb 13:5)-- In God, through Christ I find Security

I am your Father and I love you as I love my Son. I gave Jesus to you for in him my love for you is revealed. He came to demonstrate that I am for you, not against you. He came to tell you that I am not counting your sins. Jesus died so that you and I could be reconciled, his death was the ultimate expression of my love for you! (Jn 17:23, 26, 2 Cor 5:18-19, 1 Jn 4:29)-- In God through Christ I find self-worth


I desire to establish you with all my heart and soul. I want to show you great and marvelous things. Delight in me and I will give you the desires of your heart, for it is I who have given you those desires. I am able to do more for you that you could possibly imagine, I am your greatest encourager! (Jer 32:41, 33:3, Ps 37:4, Php 2:13, Eph 3:20, 2 Thess 2:16-17)-- In God through Christ I find significance


O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you…

Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me. (Excerpts, Psalms 63, The Bible)
