MARATHON MEN: The Dodgers, winners of eight of their last 12,
continue their 10-game homestand tonight (2-2) with the second of
four games against the Philadelphia Phillies following last night’s
marathon 10-7 win. Los Angeles opened the homestand by dropping
two of three games to the New York Mets and will close out the first
half of the 2015 season with three games against the Milwaukee
Brewers this weekend.
Los Angeles’ .659 home winning percentage is the third-best
mark in the Majors, behind only the Cardinals (.738, 31-11)
and the Mets (.674, 29-14).
The Dodgers’ current 5.0-game lead over the Giants in the
NL West is just a half game behind their largest divisional
lead of the year, 5.5 games following the games of May 12.
FRE-ENEMIES: Facing his old team for the first time last night,
Jimmy Rollins went 2-for-4 and drove in the go-ahead runs for Los
Angeles with a two-run single in the seventh inning. Rollins spent 15
big league seasons with the franchise from 2000-14 after being
selected by Philadelphia in the second round of the 1996 draft. He
leads the modern franchise (since 1900) in hits (2,306), doubles (479)
and stolen bases (453) and also ranks among the franchise leaders in
runs (1,325, 2nd
), triples (111, 2nd
) home runs (216, 9th), RBI (887, 6
th)
and games played (2,090, 2nd

AN ALL-STAR GAME WITHOUT THE MVP? Fans have the
opportunity to vote Clayton Kershaw into the All-Star Game during
the Final Vote, which is currently underway and runs through Friday
at 1:00 p.m. PT. Fans can vote an unlimited number of times online at
Dodgers.com/vote and on mobile devices (text the word "N3" to
89269 to vote for Kershaw), and for the final six hours of balloting on
Friday between 7:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. PT Twitter mentions of his
hashtag #MVPtoASG will also count towards his vote total.
Kershaw is seeking his fifth consecutive All-Star selection
(2011-14) and has made a strong All-Star push by posting a
1.78 ERA (11 ER/55.2 IP) in his last eight starts since May
26. Though his record sits below .500 at 5-6 in 17 starts, he
is tied for the MLB lead with 147 strikeouts and ranks
among the NL’s best in innings pitched (114.0, 3rd),
opponents’ batting average (.216, 8th) and WHIP (1.04, 8th).
The Dodgers have formed an All-Star balloting alliance with
the Red Sox for the Final Vote, and encourage fans to vote
Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts onto the American
League squad, while voting for Kershaw. Bogaerts’ hashtag
for Twitter votes is #XforASG.
ON THE MOUND: Brett Anderson has won his last three starts,
going 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA (3 ER/20.0 IP) since June 21, and can
match his career-best winning streak for the fourth time with a victory
tonight. He continues to lead the Majors with a 68.4 groundball
percentage and has allowed only 17 extra-base hits, tied for the second
fewest among MLB starters (min. 75.0 IP). Anderson has registered a
quality start in eight of his last nine outings.
J.P. Howell picked up his fourth win of the year last night in
his 16th consecutive scoreless appearance since June 1 (12.2
IP). He has allowed just one earned run (two total) in 24.2
innings over 33 appearances this season and continues to
lead NL relievers (min. 20.0 IP) with a 0.36 ERA.
THIS IS HOWIE DO IT: Howie Kendrick finished a homer shy of
the cycle last night and tied a season high with four hits, going 4-for-5
with two runs scored, a double, a triple and an RBI. Kendrick has
registered three four-hit games in his last 10 games since June 26,
batting .452 (19-for-42) with six runs scored, two doubles, a triple, a
homer and seven RBI in that span.
ON THE RISE: Today, Baseball America released its Midseason Top
50 Prospect Rankings, headlined by shortstop Corey Seager at No. 1.
Also making the list were left-hander Julio Urias (#4), infielder
Hector Olivera (#16) and right-hander Jose De Leon (#20).
SEEING STARS: Congratulations are in order for the Dodgers’ four
All-Stars, who were named to the National League team yesterday:
first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, catcher Yasmani Grandal, right-
handed pitcher Zack Greinke and outfielder Joc Pederson. Greinke
and Pederson were selected to the team as a result of player balloting,
while Grandal and Gonzalez were chosen by NL manager Bruce
Bochy. This marks the second consecutive season that the Dodgers
have had four All-Star representatives (2014: Dee Gordon, Greinke,
Kershaw, Puig) and if Clayton Kershaw were to win the Final Vote,
the club’s five All-Stars would be its most since 1995 (Raul Mondesi,
Hideo Nomo, Jose Offerman, Mike Piazza, Todd Worrell). Major
League Baseball’s 86th All-Star Game will be played on Tuesday,
July 14 at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.
Gonzalez celebrated his first All-Star selection as a Dodger
and fifth overall (also: 2008, ’09, ’10, ’11) with his 16th
home run of the season last night. Gonzalez continues to
rank among the NL leaders in doubles (23, T-3rd
), home runs
(7th), RBI (51, T-8
th) and slugging percentage (.526, 7
th) in 82
games, helping him become the first Dodger first baseman to
earn an All-Star selection since Nomar Garciaparra in 2006.
Grandal blasted his 13th home run of the season last night on
the same day that he was named to his first-career All-Star
team. Grandal, who is the first Dodger catcher to be
recognized as an All-Star since Russell Martin in 2008,
ranks among NL catchers in on-base percentage (.384, 1st),
slugging percentage (.507, 1st), home runs (13, 2nd) and
walks (38, 1st) in 65 games.
Greinke was named to his second consecutive and third-
career All-Star team (also: 2009, ’14), and could be the first
Dodger pitcher to start an All-Star Game since Brad Penny in
2006. He has fired 27.2 scoreless innings in his last four
starts and leads the Majors with a 1.48 ERA, while going 7-2
in 17 starts. Greinke also ranks among the NL leaders in
winning percentage (.778, 7-2, 2nd
), innings (115.1, 2nd
),
opponents’ batting average (.200, 4th) and WHIP (0.89, 2
nd).
Pederson will become the first Dodger rookie All-Star since
Hideo Nomo in 1995 and the first rookie position player to
earn a selection since Mike Piazza in 1993. His 20 home runs
are the second most ever for an NL rookie before the All-Star
break, behind only the 21 hit by Dave Kingman (1972, SF)
and Albert Pujols (2001, STL), and are tied for the fifth most
in the NL this year. Pederson also ranks among the NL
leaders in walks (56, 3rd), on-base percentage (.370, 13th)
and slugging percentage (.502, 10th) in 83 games.
Don Mattingly will also represent the Dodgers in Cincinnati
after his selection as a coach on Bruce Bochy’s National
League field staff. Mattingly was also on Joe Torre’s AL
All-Star staff in 2004.
HAPPY TIME: The Dodgers would like to wish pitcher Brandon
McCarthy a happy 32nd
birthday today! McCarthy went 3-0 with a
5.87 ERA in four starts in his first year with the Dodgers before
having season-ending Tommy John surgery.
WELCOME BACK, CHAD!: Tonight, the Dodgers will face off
against former first-rounder Chad Billingsley, who spent eight years
in Los Angeles from 2006-13 with a 81-61 record in 219 games (190
starts). At Dodger Stadium, Billingsley has gone 41-27 with a 3.78
ERA (233 ER/554.1 IP) in 102 games (90 starts), but has only faced
four active Los Angeles position players: Alberto Callaspo (2-for-6,
