NATIONAL LAUNCH PRESENTATION - 15th NOVEMBER 2017, PRESIDENT’S OFFICE – KAMPALA, UGANDA
Casim Umba Tolo (Ph.D)Director/Centre Leader, PHARMBIOTRAC
Background
● Realising that regional approach to African higher education offers the best leverage to build and sustain excellence required to address key development challenges, ACEII Project come in to fill this gap to realise this potential
● PHARMBIOTRAC focuses on addressing Africa’s low life expectancy and productivity by traditional means…….
2
Background…
● Africa’s social, cultural and economic systems are based on her rich biodiversity that remains economically/productively untapped
● Traditional Medicine (TM) and Traditional Medicine Knowledge (TMK) systems form part of this wealth/heritage.
3
Background…
● Inadequate number of scientists specialized in TM and pharm-biotechnology is a key challenge in harnessing the benefit of Africa’s biodiversity-to enhance life expectancy & productivity
● In response, MUST through the World Bank’s ACE II Initiative has created, in the region, a unique framework by establishing
“Pharm-Biotechnology and Traditional Medicine Centre” (PHARMBIOTRAC).
4
Objectives
Build a critical mass of
specialized and skilled
human resource that can
advance traditional medicine
and Pharm-Biotechnology
for socio-economic
development of Africa,
To Strengthen capacity
in the region to engage
in cutting edge research
in TM and systems
biology for health
products development
To Advance the practices
of TM/TMK in the region
and promote
domestication and
sustainable utilization of
medicinal species
To Create capacity in
collaboration with private sector
industry for development,
production and commercialization
of TM, biopharmaceuticals and
nutraceuticals from research
outputs
To Strengthen capacity in
the region to train highly
skilled and specialized
professionals in traditional
medicine and Bio-
pharmaceuticals,
PHARMBIOTRAC Framework
6
Partner engagement
7
Envisaged Impact
● Society benefits: Trained TM practitioners
● Industries: Skilled man power in TM and Pharm-Biotechnology, research products for commercialisation
● Academia: Building capacity of staff (MSc and PhD), research capacity (equipment and specialist skills), income from research, training and royalties

Africa’s Untapped Biodiversity and Knowledge wealth
• Africa has a rich
-Biodiversity of life forms
-Traditional medicine (TM)
-Traditional Medicine Knowledge (TMK) systems
-But these have not been science driven to improve quality of life and productivity in the Africa

● Examples of medicinal plants in Uganda under testing and development
● ‘Lapena’ ‘Ejobyo’, ‘Omuhoko’‘Emoros’ etc
● Very rich in Active pharmaceutical Ingredients

Core Ingredients
Final
Product
Plant based medicine against malaria
14
• Reduces malaria and fevers by more than 80% (Ogwang et al 2011, 2012)
• Prof Chang-Hee, (MSU, USA) has run tests in her lab found immune system effects
• 2 PhD candidates working on it is pharmacokinetics and detailed safety in children and pregnant mothers)
• Uganda loses over 600million USD due to malaria. This product can save Uganda 480 million USD every year.
