CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
“Our PGXPM cohort is such an eclectic mix of professionals with diverse workexperience, cultural background, value systems and perspectives that the learning
truly never ceases even outside the classroom. The teachers, mentors and luminaries that you will see at Great Lakes are ‘gurus’ in their chosen fields and interactions with them will inspire and motivate you to achieve great things.”
Affordable Excellence, Achievable Relevance
Dear friends,
A couple of decades ago, the PC was just starting to become popular and we in India were using GPRS at 64kbps speeds to commence
our dalliance with the Internet, little realizing how deep and permanent it was to become. With the turn of the century, there was the
dotcom revolution, a little later it was the subprime crisis, followed by the spotlight on the BRICS economies, the Arab Spring, and then,
Brexit. A couple of years ago, began the 4th Industrial Revolution spearheaded by disruptive technologies, IoT, Analytics, bots and
innovative best practices. Today it is the turn of AI, Machine Learning and Block Chain. The world is facing the onslaught of technology in
its myriad ways; such that politics, government, alliances, trade & commerce and even day to day life as we know it have all changed
beyond recognition.
You may wonder why I am talking about IT and AI when what you are interested in is getting a rewarding management education from
Great Lakes! The reason is that Technology has come a long way from being a measly, pain-in-the-back enabler, and now occupies an
iconic status in the strategic core as that single critical variable that can make or break businesses. This is why companies worldwide are
looking to hire smart and responsible managers who are in the know of how to use Technology to enhance profitability and grow
sustainably. Therefore, as a b-school that prides itself on customer delight, we have pioneered a complete overhaul of our syllabus in order
to include the newest and cutting-edge management concepts, subjects and pedagogy, while incorporating a healthy dose of relevant
‘best practices’ by benchmarking the Industry and the global top ranked executive MBA programs, and the ‘next-practices’ that our top
faculty and curriculum bring.
Our objective is to deliver world-class education to our students and nurture peerless talent for the corporate community. We believe in
the power of ‘you’ and provide you with the experience and grooming that you need to achieve your personal and professional goals,
from where you stand in your present middle/senior management role.
Our PGXPM cohort is such an eclectic mix of professionals with diverse work experience, cultural background, value systems and
perspectives that the learning truly never ceases even outside the classroom. The teachers, mentors and luminaries that you will see at
Great Lakes are ‘gurus’ in their chosen fields and interactions with them will inspire and motivate you to achieve great things. This year,
the spotlight is on setting up of the AIMLAB (Artificial Intelligence, IoT, Machine Learning, Algorithmic Analysis & Block Chain) centered
Incubator, partnering with the Atal Innovation Mission of the NITI AAYOG, Government of India, where various Labs, Consultants Clinic,
Mentor Clinic, a new Studio for Blended Learning, etc., have been envisioned.
The ‘Gurukulam’ ambience that we have strived to create in our LEED Platinum rated campus at Chennai, with its pristine surroundings
and liberal faculty-student interactions is aimed at maximizing these learnings. Overall, your stay at Great Lakes will provide you with
skillsets, education and progress as well as provide a moral and value-based learning experience that will hold you in good stead in the
years to come – personally and professionally. How you choose to build on this and leap into the higher orbit of accomplishment is totally
up to you.
You are enterprising, focused and not satisfied with the normal. You have extraordinary potential and look for learning experiences that
are new and challenging. The doors of Great Lakes are open – all you need to do is enter!
Best wishes,
Prof. Bala V. BalachandranJ L Kellogg Distinguished Professor of Accounting & Information Management, Northwestern University, USAFounder, Chairman & Dean Emeritus, Great Lakes Institute of Management, India
Dr. Suresh RamanathanDean and Principal, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai
Dear Friends,
These are times of big change. The world of business is being shaped and molded into something very different by forces of nature. You
are at the crossroads of a challenging, yet exciting moment in time. Organizations around the world are trying to reimagine their scope
and scale of business. Customers are changing their fundamental behaviors and what they care about. Supply chains are being
reinvented. Technologies and knowledge suited for the “business as usual” world may become obsolescent or at the very least, face the
challenge to adapt to these changing times. At times like these, it is natural to ask the question, “How can I learn to lead my team and
organization into a new future with vision and integrity?” At Great Lakes Institute of Management Chennai, you will learn to challenge the
status quo, free up your mind to think beyond the boundaries of what seems possible and find your true potential.
The mantra for success in the new world order will be one based on agility, flexibility, and fluidity of boundaries. Successful leadership will
be based on openness to ideas, trust, and transparency. Technology will still be the big enabler. Organizations will continue to harness
the power of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to generate deep insights from data. There will be greater emphasis on online
interactions, and consumers may shift even more towards e-commerce for their needs. However, this will come with a significantly
greater emphasis on trustworthiness and transparency in transactions and in service interactions. Where is the best place to get
educated on what it might take to succeed in this environment?
It is a fact that you have plenty of choices. You are at a stage in your career where you could genuinely consider yourself to be well on
the road to success at the pinnacle. However, the number of schools that are equipped to teach you all that you need to succeed in this
new world can be counted on your fingertips. Some are very old, reluctant to change, slow to try anything different except incrementally.
Their attitude is “This is how we have always done things.” Does that sound “agile” to you? Others are young but lacking the resources,
both human and financial, to drive significant change. Great Lakes Institute of Management is one of the top-ranked private business
schools in the country. Even better, we have got there within 15 years after first starting operations. The reason we are there, ahead of
several more well-established schools is our hunger for change. We believe in evolving with the needs of the market. That is why we were
the first among all business schools to launch an analytics program, that is now rated as the best in India and the third best in the world,
per Analytics Insight magazine. We do not take these accolades lightly. We believe in investing for the future, hiring the best talent,
trained at top tier institutions from around the world, who are well-known for their scholarship and expertise. What you will experience
in the classroom is an intense, hands-on, experience like no other. Consider the following piece of information. The average rating of
faculty teaching in our PGXPM program is greater than 4.5 out of 5. These are rock stars who make the learning experience truly special
for you.
Leadership also means knowing how to work as part of a team. The PGXPM program attracts a diverse class with varied and eclectic
interests. Working in such teams will provide you a wealth of new perspectives from people belonging to different industries and
functional areas. Beyond the interesting challenge of working as part of a cross-functional unit, managing deadlines, fragile egos, and
alpha personalities, your teamwork will strengthen the quality of your learning experience and build a network of friends you can count
on for a lifetime.
All of this will be experienced on a peaceful, sylvan oasis very close to the bustling city of Chennai, a LEED Platinum rated 27.5 acres
campus, with pristine surroundings and liberal faculty-student interactions. Apart from regular classroom instruction, we have a variety
of experiential learning modes of instruction where students learn by actual doing rather than theory.
One of my favorite sayings is by Wayne Gretzky, a legendary ice-hockey player in the US. When asked for the secret for his success, he
said that others skate to where the puck is, whereas he skates to where the puck will be. Come skate with us – because you can be
assured you will never be on thin ice in your careers after a Great Lakes experience.

PGXPM IS MEANT FOR
PROGRAMDIRECTOR’S MESSSAGE
Greetings,
This Post Graduate Executive Program in Management (PGXPM) is a premium Post Graduate Program which has four clear target groups
as beneficiaries
• The Corporation that is priming its senior management Talent & Leadership pipeline – by grooming its best young functional managers
to transform into great General Managers and future Business Leaders
• The young functional managers who
• See themselves growing high and going far in their careers, and wish to equip themselves with the necessary professional
management knowledge and capabilities, and,
• Also wish to remove possible glass-ceilings caused by lack of formal management qualifications vis-a-vis peers competing in the
career growth
• The members of families that own and run their own businesses – especially those that are currently running their businesses, and would
want to equip themselves with the relevant business management skillsets, besides developing their leadership qualities, to lead their
enterprises to a great future
• Entrepreneurs, who have ventured on their own by their natural flair and smarts, savvy and dynamism, now realizing the need to be
equipped with the relevant business & management acumen, skillsets, and required leadership qualities, to stabilize, grow and lead
their enterprises
What is as paramount as Learning needs to all these 4 groups is a transformation into “Business-Ready General Managers” – which means
that the participants know how to run a business unit, or a business, successfully, and grow it to greater heights.
How do we facilitate this transformation?
We do this by
• First ensuring that the class is filled with General Manager material. The rigorous admission process brings high potential managers with
extremely diverse backgrounds into the class
• Second, the program is a meticulous creation from a high pedigree of executive MBA programs & management gurus – and it is
benchmarked to top 10 global executive programs periodically and enhanced by the Program Director and the
Academic Council
• Third, the faculty who teach in this program are the best – professors who have been star teachers with a consistently track record
• Fourth, the program has a unique engagement framework, which drives the learning from the classrooms into development back at the
work place, through a seamless process
• Fifth, the learning gets further reinforced with a unique individual 2nd year long project that each participant will take on, which shall be
in an area that is in convergence with his/her career path aspirations and the strategic future outlook of the employer organization -
which will culminate in a report and presentation at the end of the program, and would pave way for the participants’ career
growth seamlessly
I welcome you, to read on further, to get to know the details on this unique program on General Management & Business Leadership.
Director – PGXPM, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai
Prof R.S. Veeravalli
What is as paramount as learning needs to mid, senior level and functional managers, family business owners and entrepreneurs is a transformation into “Business Ready General Managers”, which is exactly what the PGXPM is designed to do.
The PGXPM has been DESIGNED TO ENABLE high-performing fast track senior executives to pursue higher learning in formal management education without interrupting their careers.
PROGRAM DESIGN
The PGXPM program spans over 20 months and is divided into 7 terms of 3 months each. Each term starts
with a 7.5 day residency, during which 4 courses of 15 hours each plus 5 hours of Mandarin Language is
covered. The program has about 520 in-class contact hours (20% blended and 80% in class) and the
participants are expected to put in equivalent hours of self-study. The participants also have to take up a
project during the second year of the course.
The participants have to compulsorily attend the residencies and are required to live on campus during the
visits. Each of these residencies is followed by assignments/submissions in the form of application exercises
based on what was learnt in the 7.5 days.
This unique program is designed keeping in focus Capability Building objectives and is integrated with the
organization’s talent management process to help the individual apply the learnings from the program in order
to develop and grow. The PGXPM participants learn, apply, appraise, reflect, redo, report, and are coached and
mentored. The schematic below illustrates the same:

The PGXPM program participants are by intent and design sponsored by their companies to nurture the future
leaders in their organization. Sponsorship is viewed in two ways - time away from work to attend classes, and
funding support. The program also admits self-employed entrepreneurs, family managed businesses
members from next gen, senior service officers and professionals of comparable caliber to those sponsored
by Corporates. Sponsors reap substantial benefits that begin early in the program and continue long after the
participants have graduated. Great Lakes’ action-oriented learning approach helps participants to apply their
newly acquired knowledge for immediate business results.
