A warm welcome to you from Mitr and IIT Madras.

The IIT Madras campus provides a vibrant learning and living environment guaranteed to help you achieve your goals and realize your dreams. We hope that this Pocket Guide will help you settle into campus life very quickly!

After Reaching Chennai...

The IIT Madras campus is located on the Sardar Patel Road, about 12 Kms from Chennai Central. The notable landmarks around our campus are the Guindy Snake Park adjacent to the IIT main gate, Gandhi Mandapam (Anna University Stop), Madhya Kailash temple and the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) campus lying opposite to our campus .The ways to reach our Institute from Railway Station (Central), Airport and Chennai Bus Terminus (CMBT) are mentioned below:

Railway Stations

Chennai has 2 major railway stations - Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore.

Page 5: Pg Pocket Guide Finalized

Chennai Central

Option 1: City Bus ● The direct buses to campus are 5C and 19 B. The

bus Stop for getting on these buses is opposite to Central Station. The stop to ask for is CLRI / Cancer Institute / Madhya Kailash / IIT.

● Alternatively one can take Bus No. 18 to Saidapet and then take (5B, 47, 47A, 47D, 147, 23C) to our campus.

● Another way is to take (1LSS, 4LSS, 1A, 1C, 1D, 6A) to Adyar Signal and then take (5B, 47, 47A, 47D, 147, 23C) to the campus. The bus stop is right opposite to the IIT campus.

● We suggest this mode of transport if you are travelling light.

Option 2: Taxi / Auto ● This is the most convenient mode of transport if

considerable luggage is present. ● There is a Fast Track prepaid taxi kiosk right near

the exit of 10th platform where you can avail taxi services.

● Further down near the main exit there is a Prepaid Auto Stand.

Page 6: Pg Pocket Guide Finalized

Page

6

● The fares for Taxi and auto are Rs.350 and Rs.200 for a drop near the hostel, which is 3 Kms. from the main gate of IIT.

● One can also hire an auto or taxi on their own but the fares demanded may differ.

Option 3: Local Train ● You can also go to Park Town Railway Station

opposite the Central station and take an EMU (local) train to Kasturba Nagar Station (Adyar). From the Kasturba Nagar Station the campus Main Gate is at a distance of 10 minutes’ walk.

● Choose this mode if you do not have heavy luggage.

Chennai Egmore

Option 1: City Bus

● From the bus stop right opposite to the station one can catch the bus 23C to the Institute.

● Otherwise one can take 23E, 23A, 23G to Adyar signal and then catch another bus like 21G or 152L to the campus.

Page 7: Pg Pocket Guide Finalized

Page

7

Option 2: Auto / Taxi

● Prepaid taxi and auto are available right outside the station.

● The standard fare from the station to campus are Rs.200 for an auto and Rs.300-350 for a taxi respectively.

Bus Terminus (CMBT)

● The Chennai bus station is called Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT).

● On can reach the institute by catching the bus 23M and asking for CLRI / Madhya Kailash Stop.

● Otherwise, one can catch the bus M70 and ask for the stop Gandhi Road. The rear entrance of the institute is right next to this bus stop.

● Call Taxi and Auto are the other possible options.

Airport ● If you arrive at the hennai New domestic terminal,

you can make your way to the Institute in an Auto or a Taxi or a Call-Taxi.

Page 8: Pg Pocket Guide Finalized

Page

8

● At the airport, try booking a Govt. Approved prepaid taxi as they are the cheapest. A taxi till the hostel zone will cost you around Rs 350-400

● Alternatively, if you want to come by city bus, you can take PP21 to reach the Institute or 21G to Gandhi Mandapam, which is on Sardar Patel road, about 500 m from the main gate.

● OR you can find a lot of buses to Saidapet from the airport. From Saidapet you get many buses to the Institute.

From Main Gate to Hostel • Within the institute we have a shuttle service

every 15 minutes from the gates to hostel zone. These run from 6 Am to 10 pm.

• A ladies special bus runs from 7pm to 2 pm everyday

Travelling in the city Common modes of transport in the city are buses, autos and sub-urban trains.

Buses are usually crowded, especially in the peak hours. Do watch out for your belongings when taking public transport and beware of Pick pockets.

Page 9: Pg Pocket Guide Finalized

Page

Autos have meters with a minimum charge of Rs.25 for the first 1.8 Km a Rs.12 per Km thereafter. Even though the meter system is compulsory it is not an uncommon practice for them to run without meter and fix prices beforehand. So if that is the case decide on the price before getting into an auto. The auto drivers will quote very high price and one has to haggle. The rule of thumb is that it takes around 12-13 Rs./Km to travel in an Auto. Sub-Urban trains connect the city well, this is one the fastest options.

Chennai suburban trains connect many important parts of the Chennai city. Chennai also has a system of Call-taxi, where you can call up the taxi operator and a taxi will be sent to pick you up and take you to your destination. These turn out to be quite economical especially if you are travelling in a group of 6-7 people.

Things you need to buy once in Campus • A good lock ( with 3 keys) • A bucket, mug &misc. toilet accessories • A mattress, pillow and bedding • A scientific calculator (991MS/991ES) and other

Despite these arrangements, students prefer to buy the cycles from the Main outlets outside institute which offer a more broader variety of cycles. Some of these that are close to the institute are:
