HVDC Light applicationsMarket and technology trends - renewables
Europe needs a new transmission network due to: Landing-point for offshore wind and solar power
will be at the “out-skirts” of the Grid
Close down of the German nuclear power
Increased energy trading
The transmission grid must be re-designed to meet the new needs: Long distance bulk power
Low losses
Minimum environmental impact
Offshore wind
Solar
Hydro

What is a HVDC grid?
A HVDC grid that can operate:
• Independent of one or several disturbances (isolate a failure)
• In different operation modes in the connected AC- & DC-systems
Technology gaps for the full realization includes:
• DC breaker
• Power flow control
• Automatic network restoration
• High voltage DC/DC converters
Global rules/regulations for operation required for market acceptance

HVDC Grids – Why?Regional to continental HVDC Grids
Offshorewind
Solar
Hydro
Why HVDC Grids vs HVDC single links or AC• Only relevant offshore solution • Loss reduction• Increased power capacity vs. AC • Less visual impact
Why now:• Offshore wind, remote solar, grid
constraints• HVDC Light systems and components
mature
Challenges:• HVDC Breakers & DC/DC Converters• Regulatory framework
