The annual Martin A. ‘Marty’ Ryba Memorial Golf Outing on September 9th was a great success. Jackie Ryba and Walt Carey did another fantastic job of organiz-ing the outing this year. Their hard work is greatly appreciated. I also want to thank all the golfers and hole sponsors who participated. We had a fantastic turn out of golfers this year. See pages 14-15 for additional information and pictures of the golf outing.

The October 14, 2014 meeting will be at Core Technology Molding Corpora-tion located at 4300 Piedmont Parkway, Greensboro. The Board of Directors will meet at 4:00 pm. A tour of Core Technology will be from 5:00 -6:00. Core Technology is a plastic injection molding solutions provider. Their customers include TE Connectivity, Bausch & lomb Global Surgical, Novant Health, Newell Rubbermaid, Husqvarna Group, Parker Hannifin, and Consolidated Metco (Tier II supplier to Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth, Volvo/Mack, and Navistar). Core Technology competes in the automotive, heavy truck, medical device, consumer products, and outdoor equipment markets. Core Technology is ISO 9001:2008 certified and houses a class 10,000 ISO 7 and class 1,000 ISO 6 medical clean room – a feature that has allowed the company to enter the biological pharma-ceutical market and secure Merck Corporation as one of its newest clients.

The dinner and presentation will be from 6:15 – 8:30 pm at TE Connectivity 719 Pegg Road, Greensboro. A fantastic dinner is being catered by Tricia’s Catering from Lexington, NC. The speaker is Steven Bowen, President and CEO of Plas-tiComp, Inc. Winona, MN. The topic is: Long Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastics. Steve’s bio is on page 17.

It is time to remember the annual essay contest that we sponsor every year. This contest is for Junior and Senior High School students in the Piedmont-Coastal area. Maury Balik is the contact for this. He sends out notices to numerous schools and is always willing to include new schools. If you know of any school which may be interested in participating please provide Maury with a contact name.

The plans for both the November meeting and the Christmas Party in Decem-ber are being finalized. The November tour is planned for Superior Tooling in Wake Forest; all other details will be provided in the next newsletter. Please see the calendar on page 13 for all of the proposed monthly meetings for our 2014/2015 year.

2014 MARTY RYBA MEMORIAL GOLF OUTING RESULTS

Our sincere thanks go out to each and every one of the forty-four (44) golfers (a 22% increase over last year) and our twenty (20) hole sponsors who participated in the 7th annual Martin A. “Marty” Ryba Me-morial SPE Golf Outing held at The Preserve at Jordan Lake in Chapel Hill (Tuesday, September 9th). From a weather perspective, we were lucky that the heavy rains which pounded this area for two days before held off for the event! There were cloudy skies, with temperatures in the low 80s, light winds, but NO RAIN! The golf course was in pretty good shape given the rain the course endured two days and nights earlier, although the green proved to be very slow and reduced the drama on the Longest One Putt Made contests held on the five selected par fours. To everyone who won a door prize (and I believe every-one did), congratulations! We had three winners of our 50/50 education raffle. We brought in a total of $700.00 in ticket sales, $440.00 in entry fees and Jackie Ryba sold another $270.00 worth of tickets during the event. We gave out a total of $359.00 in winnings: First Prize of $175.00 went to Rodney Joslin of TE Connectiv-ity (who did not play in the outing but came to attend the BOD meeting after the event and bought some tickets), Second Prize of $105.00 went to Tim Earley of Barnet Polymers and the Third Prize of $65.00 went to Brian Pezzulo of Triangle Central Warehouse.

On the financial side, all eighteen (18) of the golf hole sponsorships were purchased by twenty (20) sponsors and brought in $4,500.00. The golf out-ing registration fees brought in another $4,100.00 for a total income of $8,600.00. Our expenses to-taled $4,411.33, therefore the golf outing cleared $3,758.67 Adding the Section’s portion of the 50/50 education raffle ($360.00) to the golf income, The NET PROFIT from the 2014 golf outing was $4,118.67. Our goal was bring in over $4,000.00 in net income and we did it! No, YOU ALL did it!Next year’s 8th Annual Martin A. “Marty” Ryba Memorial SPE Golf Outing has already been sched-uled and it will once again be played at The Preserve at Jordan Lake Golf Club in Chapel Hill on Tuesday, September 8, 2015. Please clear your calendars for that date and make plans to attend.From a personal standpoint, I want to thank my co-chairperson, Jackie Ryba, for all of her assistance. All-in-all, it was a fantastic experience! I’d also like to extend the thanks of the entire Section to Head Golf Professionals, Justin Malone and Mike Meyer and his most capable staff for their efforts in making our out-ing the success that it was. I especially want to thank the chef and wait staff for the good food we had at our outing. Thanks for everyone’s positive comments on this year’s event. The Piedmont Coastal Section S71 of SPE 2014/2015 advertising campaign to renew and recruit new advertis-ers for the Piedmont-Coastal Section monthly on-line newsletter, the “Perspective” is underway. Steven T. (Steve) Bowen is President and Chief Execu-tive Officer of PlastiComp Inc., a technology company focused on long fiber reinforced materials and a proprietary direct in-line compounding technology called Pushtrusion.

Previously, from 1984 to 2000, Steve was President and CEO of Polymer Composites Inc. (PCI) now the Celstran business of Celanese Corporation. Poly-mer Composites evolved from a technology start-up into the global market leader in the Long Fiber pellet market. In 1999 PCI’s annual sales exceeded $50,000,000, and materials were manufactured in Europe, North America, and under license in Japan.

From 1975 -1984, as VP of sales and marketing for Bethlehem Steel’s plasticsoperations, Kusan, Inc., Steve was involved in multi-plant injection molding of thermoplastic parts and component assemblies. As their supplier of television cabinets, Kusan was instrumental in bringing Toshiba to Tennessee. Kusan was also a valued supplier to Whirlpool Corporation, General Motors, Ford, Rock-well and other significant customers.

Early career assignments included market develop-ment and account management for General Electric’s Plastics Division in the automotive group in Detroit, MI, group leader for material development at Fiberfil in Evansville, IN, and composite material develop-ment at 3M Company in St. Paul, MN.
