Personal Development 020 Los Angeles Harbor College Term: Spring 2015 Section#: 0108 Instructor: Adrienne C. Brown Room: NEA 109 Days/Times: MW 2:30-5:40 Dates: 04/13/15-06/07/15 My teaching philosophy I believe you deserve the best in life. You have what it takes to make your ideal life real. If you work hard and take advantage of available resources, a college education will give you the opportunity to explore possibilities you've never imagined and the tools you need to navigate a career pathway. I teach and counsel at a community college because: 1. The community college is accessible to anyone interested in learning. There is no selection process to be admitted, it doesn't matter if you did not have perfect grades in high school, or if you took a 10 or 20 year break after earning a diploma or GED. The community college offers the opportunity to learn to anyone who is willing to put in the work to achieve their goals. 2. Higher education as a whole offers an amazing opportunity to learn about the world, the nation, the state, your local community, your major of choice, and yourself. 3. I was a community college student. When I left high school I didn't even know that you had to apply to attend community college! I thought I would just show up in and a counselor would hand me a schedule of classes. I had a lot to learn! Once I started community college the transfer center was like my second home, I constantly attended workshops, field trips, and made appointments with university representatives. I chose my major based on the majors available at my community college, but I had no idea that there were so many other possibilities. I earned an AA degree in Sociology. I ultimately transferred to UCLA to get a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, with minors in Anthropology and African- American Studies, then completed a Master's Degree in Education Counseling with a multicultural emphasis at San Diego State University in their Community-Based Block Program. I teach so that I can tell you everything that I wish I knew as a community college student. I know no matter where you come from, in higher education, you can find avenues to personal growth, career exploration and ultimately a pathway to financial stability and personal fulfillment. After taking this class, I want you to be a driven, empathetic, culturally competent, optimistic, and ethical scholar focused on possibilities and solutions for yourself, your family, the community, and the world!

The Official course description POST SECONDARY EDUCATION: THE SCOPE OF CAREER PLANNING 3 UNITS (UC:CSU)

This course provides students with the information to make appropriate educational, career and lifestyle

choices. Topics examined include educational programs and their requirements, career resources and the

career decision making process, study skills and the elements of a healthy lifestyle. Students will design

their own individualized educational plan. The Full story of the course description The description above is what you will find in the course catalog. A course description tells you what the goals are of your instructor and what you can expect to learn, the amount of units for the course, and whether or not the course is transferable. You will notice that is course description matches the student learning outcomes in the next section of the syllabus. UNITS This course is 3 units, knowing the amount of units in your courses is important. 1. Units determine the cost of the course because community college fees are paid by the unit

2. Units determine how much time you spend in class. In this three unit course we will spend about 3

hours per week in the classroom.

3. Units give you an idea of the workload for the class and how much study time you will need to invest to

be successful, they typically say you multiply the amount of units by 2 or 3, and that is how many hours

outside of class you will spend studying and doing homework. Since this class is 3 units, you can

expect to spend about 6-9 hours per week on homework and studying.

4. Units affect the amount of financial aid you receive. To maintain full-time status you must be enrolled

in at least 12 units in a Fall/Spring Semester.

5. Unit maximum: You may enroll in a maximum of 18 units in the Fall/Spring. Permission to carry a load in

excess of eighteen units may be granted to individuals depending on the excellence of their previous

semester’s academic work. TRANSFERABILITY The course description will tell you if a course is transferable to a California public university. This course is is transferable to both UC (the University of California) and CSU (California State University). Please see

below the map of UC campuses on the left and CSU campuses on the right.
