Welcome…
Tony and Debby Rowley, Town Mayor and Mayoress of Pershore
A Message from the Town Mayor…
The biggest event on the Pershore calendar is upon us as I write this article – the Pershore Plum Festival. Hopefully, the weather will be kind to us and the town will be alive with the large numbers of visitors enjoying the many and varied activities organised by the Festival Committee.
The Plum Festival appears to mark the end of the summer events in the town as the autumn season fast approaches. Our attention will thereafter be focused on the events later in the year including the fireworks on Bonfire Night and the Christmas Switch-on and shopping event – keep a look out for further news on these events.
On the business front the Town Council has identified a number of priorities for the forthcoming municipal term. The key projects and activities will be consulted upon at various committee stages and at other public meetings. I urge everyone to participate in the consultation exercises and keep a watch for announcements in the local press, public notice boards, the Council’s website and this newsletter.
One final point; the Council is organising a litter pick in the town on Saturday 3rd October 2015 and your help is needed – please contact the Town Council if you wish to volunteer or just turn up on the day at 10.00.am. Incidentally if you are aware of any specific areas in the town where litter is a problem then please inform the Town Council.
Welcome to the Autumn edition of our newsletter. We have enjoyed a very successful summer of events again this year, including welcoming the Vikings for the River Festival and enjoying large numbers of visitors to the town. As winter approaches and we start to think of Christmas Lights please note that the arrangements for the switch on are a little different this year. The Youth Council are still organising the actual switch on, so watch out for the usual children’s competition to see who will press the button, however the event has been brought forward to 21st November. This is to work with the Chamber of Trade who this year are organising a Georgian Fair for the day with street entertainment and stalls all with a Georgian theme. The actual switching on of the lights will be at the usual 4.45pm with fireworks so why not come along and support the whole event and maybe pick up some slightly more unusual presents? All the shops will be open and it is planned to close the High Street for the day to enable more stalls to set up and people to mill around. See more details on page 5.

Pershore Georgian Christmas Fayre
and Lights Switch On Saturday 21st November will see a new event in a new location as the town celebrates the annual Christmas Lights Switch On. This year, the festive fun will be part of a Georgian Christmas Fayre that will take over the High Street in an ambitious venture to host a unique and exciting community event utilising our famed Georgian history and architecture.
Not forgetting the traditional reindeer, Father Christmas, carols and stalls – including a festive farmers market – hot food, fairground rides, entertainment and the main attraction of the lights switch on, followed by a firework display. Be sure to visit and keep an eye out for more details nearer the time.
The event, running from early afternoon into the evening, will host a number of fascinating period attractions and demonstrations that will fill our High Street and that families can watch and participate in. Likely activities will include Georgian pewter toy casting, lace-making, soap making, forge, candle making, pottery making, purse workshop and toys and games.

So, the Rotary Club of Pershore is providing a tree in Broad Street and inviting you to sponsor a light in memory of a loved one, relative or friend, who is no longer with us. For 2015 the amount raised will go to Pershore Riverside Youth Centre, Acorns Children’s Hospice, Pershore Rotary Grant Scheme and other Rotary sponsored charities.
Lists of those commemorated will be displayed in the Pershore Town Newsletter and will appear on a rolling screen in the window of Allchurch Bailey & Co. PERSHORE TOWN COUNCIL – PRIORITIES AND USE OF NEW

Pershore Town Council has been allocated £170,000 of New Homes Bonus by the District Council and wants residents views on how it should be spent.

Even if the above funds are used for those purposes there will still be approximately £40,000 available for other projects in the Town.
If you have not been able to attend the public meetings on 13

Town Council Projects
The Town Council has over the past few years completed various projects including the Library purchase and refurbishment, the Cemetery Chapel restoration and the conversion of the old store room in the Chapel into a meeting room with kitchen facilities.
With a new Council recently elected, members have now met to consider their priorities for the next four years. These included creating a car park adjacent to the cemetery, continuing to promote the Northern Link road to help to relieve traffic congestion on Station Road and also to produce a Town Plan. Other projects have been suggested and these were considered at public meetings recently. Some projects require funding and there was discussion as to how this money might be found; others can be funded by the Town Council from its own budget.
By far the biggest project, although costs are unknown, is to create a Town Plan. It is hoped that as many people as possible will get involved by letting the working group know what they would hope to see in the town in the future. This should not only include facilities but also how to improve the town as a whole. It might also include suggestions as to where any future housing could be built or land where residents would want to state that houses should definitely NOT be built.
By the time of this newsletter the Town Council will have met to consider how to progress the Town Plan. Please look out here and in the press for how you can be involved. We would also like people to complete the questionnaire on the previous page so that everyone has a chance to voice their opinion and give the Town Plan working group some ideas. The Plan, when completed, will help the Town Council to set its objectives for the coming years.
www.pershoretowncouncil.gov.uk
More and more information is being put onto the Town Council website including various policies and procedures as well as profiles of your local councillors. Pershore is divided into two wards, St Andrews and Holy Cross and each councillor represents one of those wards. If you are not sure of the ward boundaries, a map is available on the web site or, if you prefer, hard copy can be viewed at the Town Hall.
Councillors have also decided to hold an event – a ‘Meet your Councillor’ session, so that you can put a “face to a name” and speak to them in person about any issues in the town you think they may be able to help with.
WATCH OUT FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS SHORTLY.

Croome Redefined Project Bulletin Summer Reading Challenge
The day was a great success with the total number of visitors here specifically for the Summer Reading Challenge Launch at
1081 which is more than double for the same event last year.
Everyone involved in the day, library staff, Croome staff and volunteers reported numerous very positive comments received from visitors, a good proportion of which were new to Croome and the National Trust.
For a third year we are delighted to have partnering Worcestershire Libraries and Learning Service to host the 2015 Summer Reading Challenge, the objective of which is to:
Plan fun activities to encourage children to read over the 6 week holiday.
Reach out to a different audience encouraging families from across the region to engage with Croome and the National Trust.
This year’s theme is ‘Record Breakers’! We will be attempting to set a new Regional Record with the most books loaned from a mobile library in one day!
For the first event we were really lucky to be joined by Clik Clik Theatre Company, Sorcha the Puppeteer and international bestselling children’s author Cathy Cassidy who attracted huge interest!

Capital Works - Progress Update
The works are progressing well and we are just over two thirds of the way through the 65 week contract. It’s currently 3 weeks behind the original programme with completion expected by the end of November (excluding the external plant room – see below). At the end of the works the Court will have new services and all structural repairs will have been carried out. It is not a restoration project so rooms may not look very different from at the start, however, the building will all be in good order and ready for use. Roof repairs are well underway, which is extra work we were able to do due to the availability of funding part way through the contract. It is being carried out alongside the main work in the house and will be complete by September. As work progresses around the building we have had a very flexible and adaptable approach to visitor routes and facilities. Our tearoom had to move once again and a new facility opened in the basement this week so that work can commence on the ground floor rooms. There’s been a fantastic working relationship between the Trust team and our contractors Croft to ensure that work proceeds safely around our visitors with as much of the work on view as possible.
Plant Room
The plant for the services (heat exchangers, boilers etc.) will now be housed in a new building on the south side of the Red Wing. We are hopeful that planning permission for the building will soon be granted following extensive consultation on the design. Construction can then commence and is forecast for completion and commissioning by March 2016. This does mean that we will have to find a temporary solution to heating over the coming winter using portable electric heaters. However, the new electrical system will be in place and the Court will be in better shape with less draughts and an insulated roof so it certainly won’t be as cold as last year!
Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) Payments
By doing some ‘clever accounting’ we have found a way of claiming the governments Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments for the heat generated by the Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) whilst not losing any of the HLF grant. The rules do not allow for an HLF funded project to claim RHI so we have swapped the roof works with the GSHP in the HLF funded Croome Redefined project. This will make a significant amount of extra funds available for Croome’s on-going conservation works as the RHI payments for heat generated are paid for the next 20 years.
