Westchester Community College offers a number of academic programs in the arts. They include dance, drama, film, music (vocal, instrumental, computer-engineered) and

visual/computer art classes. Smart Arts programming enriches the classes as students are given opportunities to meet guest artists up close and personal, as well as, participate in

residency custom-designed outreach activities.

This literary project is a collection from the contributing students, staff and faculty, undertaken by the Office of Cultural Affairs at Westchester Community College.

What is haunting when it comes to the arts could be commonly referred to as spells, spirits or superstitions. They haunt, linger, and get passed down from generation to generation. Are the spells, spirits, and superstitions that haunt us real? What is meant by something being real? Is it something written down or talked about, documented, and spread publicly?

In this book are spells, spirits and superstitions that have been gathered in two possible ways. Either they exist out there, having been found, researched and summarized, or they are new, having been created and inspired by what already exists. As the reader, you are invited to peruse the spirits, spells, superstitions in the arts as presented... and then decide if they are “fact” or “fiction.”

The game rules in exploring the book’s content allow the reader to experience spells, spirits, and superstitions lurking in the various arts genres, as well as, those believed or practiced by many artists. The guessing game is to determine which of the book’s content is fact or fiction. The spirits, spells, superstitions that are fact or fiction will be identified with either wording on the back page, along with the actual source or source of inspiration for the related material.

So, try your luck in figuring out which spell, spirit, and superstition is fact or fiction, and be inspired to come up with some of your own, either through research or imagination!

Proceeds from both book and Kindle sales support student and community outreach activities. To purchase, go online at www.amazon.com and search for: Into the SmartArts: Spells, Spirits, & Superstitions.

This is the fourth publication in the Into the SmartArts series. The first three publications can be found also on www.amazon.com in paperback, and the first and third in Kindle format as well.

THURSDAY, APRIL 2 11:00 am - 12:15 pm and 12:30 - 1:45 pm

Steven Salvatore is a young adult author and educator. Steven’s debut novel, The Other Side of Silence, will be published by Bloomsbury in the winter of 2021. The novel is about a genderqueer student who dreams of being a diva like their hero Mariah Carey. When they are cast in the lead female role in the school musical, they must fight against the school administration’s closed-mindedness. Steven prefers the term queer (identifying as both gay and genderqueer), and uses pronouns he/him/his (more regularly) or they/them. He currently teaches at Westchester Community College and Pace University.

Dr. Neely will discuss how to spin personal interests into viable scholarship. Students will hear about his personal journey as a writer as well as how they can research and write about their own interests. One summer afternoon in 1999, as Dr. Neely lay on his sofa, annoyed by the ice cream truck music, he wondered: “What is the deal with this damn music?” He asked around and began to write. What started as a short paper grew into a chapter length study. Dr. Neely’s ice cream truck music scholarship is now widely recognized and has been referenced in national newspapers like the New York Times, in various publications, and on websites like Vice and the BBC.

The reading and lecture series lets the best of today’s writers share their secrets with literary aficionados.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27 11:00 am - 12:15 pm and 12:30 - 1:45 pm

Presentations take place in the Gateway Center — Davis Auditorium. (Free and open to the public)
