THE SHOTBLASTING PROCESS - EXPLAINED

SHOT (also called abrasive or steel balls) is stored in the SHOT COMPARTMENT (here on the right)

Turn on the DUST EXTRACTION SYSTEM . The BLASTING VALVE must be closed. At the same time as you open the BLASTING VALVE and start releasing SHOT into the BLAST WHEEL, you begin shotblasting the surface area. It’s important to have the shotblaster moving!

Any SHOT/ ABBRASIVE left behind can simply be collected with a MAGNETIC BRUSH, placed in the SHOT COMPARTMENT and used again.

The heart of the Shotblaster is the so-called BLAST WHEEL. CONTEC® uses 4, 5 or 6 bladed blastwheels depending on the size of the machine.

SHOT ABBRASIVE is fed to the center of the BLAST WHEEL via the SHOT CAGE. The SHOT is then blasted onto the surface area by the centrifugal force of the rapidly rotating wheel.

STEP BY STEP

THE SLOWER THE SPEED, THE DEEPER AND ROUGHER OF THE SUBSTRATE!

REMEMBERRemove any foreign debris from the floor to be blasted, such as screws, bolts, stones etc. and if necessary clean the surface beforehand with a broom, CONTEC® MAGNETIC BRUSH or a DUST EXTRACTION SYSTEM.

APPLICATIONS OF MOBILE SHOTBLASTERSCONTEC® mobile shotblasters are widely used for the surface preparation of horizontal and slightly inclined substrates composed of concrete, asphalt, tile, steel and so much more. Steel shot, or grit, is continuously blasted at the surface being prepared. It is separated from the dust or contaminants being removed and recycled for the blasting process. The debris is filtered out of the blasting process with an appropriately sized CONTEC® DUST COLLECTOR, creating virtually a dust free operation. Shotblasting is used to clean and prepare surfaces, remove markings and rubber build up, texture for both aesthetics and slip resistance, remove coatings as well as preparing the substrate for overlays. Shotblasting is also used for the post-treatment of milled floors or diamond-scarified concrete surfaces as a final preparation of the substrate.

THE OPERATIONBlasting is accomplished by repetitive side-by-side lanes or blast paths. The width of the blast path is determined by the size of the shotblaster’s blast opening. It is fully sealed with a magnetic frame, rubber seals and brushes in order to contain the shot. Due to the superior design and engineering, all CONTEC® ELEPAHNT, HORNET, MODUL und ELGATOR, when paired to the appropriately sized CONTEC® Dust Collector provide for a dust-free system to be used indoors, or out.

THE PROCEDUREThe SHOT is literally thrown onto the surface by the high velocity of the centrifugal force of the rapidly rotating BLAST WHEEL. As the SHOT impacts, particles of the surface – debris/dust are removed and rebound together with the SHOT. This dust is then separated from the SHOT using the DUST EXTRACTION SYSTEM and is returned to the SHOT COMPARTMENT, to be fed back into the centrifugal wheel in a continuous circuit.

OPTIMUM RESULTSThe forward operating speed is controlled with the electrical DRIVE UNIT on the larger Shotblasters. The HORNET and certain ELEPHANT models are manually pushed and/or pulled. The resulting substrate will be a clean, open-pored, and profiled surface for which to adhere top coatings, finishes and overlays to, or just to provide a slip resistant finish. In the case of heavily contaminated or coated surfaces, a second blast path is recommended, criss-crossing the first, in order to achieve the desired surface profile. The dust containment bin or bags of the DUST EXTRACTION SYSTEM must be emptied routinely. Proper filter cleaning is accomplished via the pulsed air action, provided by the on-board compressor of the CONTEC ® Dust Collection Systems. Maintaining proper SHOT levels in the machine provides for the best blasting patterns. Any SHOT remaining on the substrate after blasting can picked up with a MAGNETIC BRUSH and reused in the blaster. Edges, corners and joints which cannot be shotblasted can be profiled with the appropriate CONTEC ® grinder.
