An Ayurvedic View of Health

Health is a process, not a state.

This process is ongoing, not a one-time attempt.

The process is participatory; the person must take the responsibility for his or her health. The dynamic balance needs to be achieved in all the aspects of this person’s life: Physical, biochemical, intellectual, emotional, behavioral, spiritual, familial, social, environmental and universal --- not narrowed down to only physical or biochemical aspects.

Therapies need to be comprehensive, considering all aspects of life like nutrition, natural medicines, exercise, rest, emotions, herbs etc, not limited to drugs and surgery.

Therapies need to be customized to suit the individual instead of standardized for the imaginary “average person.”

• Ayurveda simply uses a different terminology to express some of the most advanced ideas of molecular biology and quantum physics

• Human body is a dynamic field of energy. It is constantly participating in an exchange with the larger of field of energy that surrounds it, which comprises the rest of the universe.

• As a result of this continual exchange, your body is being renewed and re-placed every moment of your life!

• Our physiology itself is inherently intelligent, and the many physiological functions guiding the replacement of cells and molecules and even atoms are dependent on the inherent intelligence that inhabits the human body

• Consciousness is the organizing Essence of the universe that simultaneously transcends and creates the world we perceive

Sankhya PhilosophyThe 24 Basic Principles of Existence

One of the oldest philosophicaltheories.

The word sankhya is derived fromsat meaning truth and khyameaning to realize.

Another definition of Sankhya is anumber that is related to the 24elemental building blocks(principles) which constitute theSankhya view of the universe (Seediagram to the right)

• Ayurveda simply describes the universe as arising from a field of Pure Potentiality that has an intrinsic nature to create.. Avyakta• Vedas describes not only the beginning of the universe, but also a continuing creative process that is occurring at every moment… Anaadi.. AnantaThe entire universe unfolds through the interaction of three vital principles. They are Sattva, the creative principle; Rajas, the principle of maintenance; and Tamas, the principle of destruction • Everything that we perceive through our senses, from elementary particles to galaxies, is born, has a life span, and eventually dies. In this dynamic cycle, the Gunasare the principles that are continuously expressing themselves.. Trigunatamka Srushti..• The three gunas interact to create both subjective and objective realities. In the subjective realm, the five sense organs, five motor organs, and the conscious mind are brought into being• On the objective side, the gunas give rise to five great elements, or Mahabhutas, and five subtle elements, or Tanmatras, the quanta of perceptual experience that feed our five sense organs. The Five great elements are the codes of nature that compose theworld of perceived forms .. Observer.. Observation.. Observed

Sankhya Philosophy

All matter is created by the combination of these five material elements. Therefore Tamas is called Dravya Shakti, which translates to the power of substance.

6. Samavaya| Unbreakable Relation (Ginger and heat have a samavaya relationship)

7. Abhava | Absence or Non-Existence (In Amalaki or garlic, the salty taste is absent, so there is an Abhava of salty taste. Another example: Kapha has an Abhava of heat.)

Ayurveda & Age-associated Neurodegenerative diseases:

Since age associated neurodegenerative condition occur at the vata time of life, it is

considered a vata disorder. The condition is brought on by a vata-provoking lifestyle

including unstable routines, overwhelming stress and eating a dry, cold, light diet.

The condition may be associated with imbalances in all five vayus namely: Prana

vayu (inward moving air-absorption of impressions), Samana vayu (afferent

impulses-movement of thoughts), Vyana vayu (efferent impulses-processing of

thoughts), Udana vayu (memory and recall) and Apana vayu (digestion and

dispersion of thoughts) suggesting a failure to absorb healthy impressions from all 5

senses.

This may ultimately affect cognition and the thought process characterized by

personality and behavioral abnormalities.

Study, Jefferson et al. Circulation.2010; 0: CIRCULATION AHA.109.90509

• The findings are consistent with the hypothesis that decreasing cardiac function, even at normal cardiac index levels, is associated with acceleratedbrain aging.

• Incorporating walking into one’s exercise regimen may help prevent cognitive degeneration, according to findings published in the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience.

• Incorporating a low-calorie diet and daily exercise into one’s lifestyle may slow the mental physical aging processes, according to findings published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dhatu | That Which Holds Together Each Dhatu has a primordial vibration and is an expression of

consciousness.

The Dhatus hold (support) the body together.

The Doshas do the function and Dhatus provide the site to do the

function.

The Dhatus are developed from and nourished by food.

There are seven Upadhatus, or secondary tissues, developed as a

byproduct of Dhatu digestion.

The Malas, or waste products are also produced during each Dhatu

digestion.

The Dhatus support the body and provide nutrition to the more subtle

Dhatus. The Upadhatus support the body but do not provide nutrition.

In the disorder process the Dhatus become affected, which is called

Dushya.

The Dhatus are measured in Anjali pramana. Anjali is a measure

created by cupping the palms together to equal roughly 8 fluid ounces.

The grosser Dhatus nourish the subtler Dhatus and subtler the Dhatus

protect the grosser Dhatus.

Dharanat Dhatavah

The Universe is made up of energy and matter. Energy needs matter to mobilize and serve its function. Matter doesn’t move without energy. For this purpose, the Doshas represent energy and the Dhatus represent matter. They are both close friends who cannot live or function without each other. The doshas work through the Dhatus.
