As the last century drew to its close, quite a lot of us thought that it was a good time to look back and analyse the course we had taken, before taking the leap into the new millennium and plunging into a hopeful and uncertain future. This was what led to the book Pepe Gimeno, 25 years of graphic design, covering a large number of the projects carried out over that time, and published in 1999, with the cooperation of Experimenta magazine. Over ten years have gone by since then, and at the end of a decade packed with events which will surely mark the course of the coming years, we thought that it might be of interest to compile the work done over these 3650 days or more. We thus decided to form a compilation of the many projects in which we have taken part in this period of time, which for me has proved short, very short indeed.

When I came back to all this work, the first thing that surprised me was the sheer number of projects and just how hard we had worked on these. The second surprise was the wide range of registers to be found in them: the way they go from the strict rationality of normative jobs to the poetics and subtlety of experimental projects, from the clean tidiness in the narration of books and catalogues to the forthright punch of brands and posters; from neutral and distant language to the gestural and close–up idiom. All of these coexist with no contradictions in a logical harmony resulting from the appropriate choice of graphic language in each project.
Later on, as I gradually arranged and went over these, it also brought back the affection and dedication that we put into each of these jobs. This could well be one of the many reasons why the projects stand up so well to passing time, keeping all their freshness and visual interest, in spite of the years that have gone by and the fickleness of fashion. In 1999 we said that we liked working on what we called “good projects, the sort based on mutual faith and complicity and trust between client and designer”. Today, ten years later, we still think so, and believe even more categorically that this type of relationship is a vital requisite for producing excellent projects. We cannot say that this last decade has proved dull at all, and we have gone from surprise to surprise for one reason or another. A lot of things have happened to us, many them good, luckily, though there have been some very sad blows like the death of our colleague Laura Varela, who left us suddenly in November 2007 and broke our hearts. We started 2000 with a personal challenge, through wanting to develop a typeface on Andy Warhol calligraphy. This was a major endeavour, due to being the first font that we were developing in full, involving the added difficulty of the ligatures required in calligraphy typefaces. Notwithstanding, we had it ready by the end of the year and gave it the friendly-sounding name of Pepe Type.

In 2001 the Type Directors Club of New York chose us for the Typographic Excellence award, the most prestigious international typographic accolade, from over 130 proposals from 14 countries. This had a great impact, encouraged us and made us ready for further challenges. A few months later Font Font included Pepe Type in its catalogue, to distribute this internationally. To round off 2001, in June we won the restricted competitive tender called by the Presidential Ministry to create the graphic image of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union 2002.

Developing the Spanish Presidency mark meant that we had another great challenge to cope with - working with a symbol which was going to be introduced from one day to the next, for just six months, but with great intensity. It meant working for six ministries in parallel on a great variety of supports on which the graphic image had to be applied and standardised: from a postage stamp to a twelve-euro coin, from a glass coaster to a huge photocall, from a simple invitation to a complex web page..

As if we had not had enough hectic work, in the first six months of 2002 we set off on a new adventure by publishing the book Calligr Typography in cooperation with La Imprenta Comunicación Gráfica Printers, with the contribution of 21 designers’ work. This was a book which looked at calligraphic typography, its history, its influence on art and its relations with the educational setting, based on the central theme of Pepe Type and its creative process.

In July 2002 were asked to take part in Sin Límites, an event arranged by Raquel Pelta, which was going to be held in 2003, on designers’ personal work. The proposal put forward for this was the germ of another project which we presented in 2004 at Kosme de Barañano and Sally Radic’s behest, at an individual exhibition at the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, IVAM, and which we called Grafía Callada. A catalogue and a poster given an award by the TDC that year were published along with this exhibition.

It was also in 2004 when the Roca company, as part of its worldwide expansion strategy, commissioned us with transforming its extremely well-known Gothic logo, to adapt this to its new project. The aim was to get rid of the negative aspects that the gothic letters gave to the graphic expression of the brand, but without this entailing losing any of the great recognition that this enjoyed. That meant changing the whole thing, but in such a way that nothing would change. We worked closely with Roca company management until we reached the degree of evolution of the mark that we were looking for in 2005. The result was a success that is still being confirmed as time goes by. At the same time, in the month of August the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Fundación Vitra Design Museum asked us to give the workshop Safari residual, as part of the summer courses arranged in Le Domaine de Boisbuchet in France.

In 2006 NM, a company working in rice production and marketing, asked us to look for a solution for packaging and brand name to get into the international gourmet sector. The conditioning factors of all kinds were huge: economic, stock, a large variety of products and others. We worked for several months, rather discouraged at the difficulties involved, until we found the name Sivaris and a simple solution for the packaging that provided a solution for each of the issues brought up. The result was surprising, and we had never been given so many prizes for a single job - for the time being, four international and three national awards.
1- Certificate of Excellence of the International Society of Typographic Designers of the United Kingdom.
2- Certificate of Typographic Excellence of the Type Directors Club of New York. 3- Nomination for the Designpreis der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. 4- Liderpack Award, Barcelona.
5- Worldstar Award of the World Packaging Organisation, Sweden.6- Anuaria award, Madrid.7- AEPD award for Packaging given by the Spanish Association of Design Professionals, Madrid.

Apart from the success of Sivaris, it has been a generous decade as far as awards and recognition are concerned. We obtained the Type Directors Club of New York’s Certificate of Typographical Excellence five times, in 2001, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. Another international prize was the Gold Award for Creativity and the Design Excellence of America’s Graphic Design, in 1999. Others were the Worldstar Award from the World Packaging Organisation and the Graphis Poster Golden and Platinum Award in 2007, as well as the nomination of the Designpreis der Bundesrepublik Deutschland and the certificate of Excellence of the International Society of Typographic Designers of the United Kingdom in 2009.

A significant number of awards have also come from national associations and bodies. In 2006 we were given the AEPD Award for Packaging from the Spanish Design Professionals’ Association and the Liderpack Prize; in 2007 the Anuaria Prize for Packaging and in 2008 the Letra Award for professional development. Lastly, the Valencian Community Designers’ Association awarded us three Gold Medals in the ADCV prizes 2009.

To round it all off, in February 2009 a compilation of personal work done from 2004 to 2008 was presented at the Galería Ciclorama in Valencia. Here the interest of the work involved not so much the alphabet and symbol, but instead focussed more on narration and meaning.
1- Participation in the international jury for choosing the European presidency 2010 mark.2- Prize-giving of ADCV awards, Valencia.
3- Interview for Gráffica digital magazine. 4- Gold Medal trophies in the ADCV awards.5 and 6- Diary of a Shipwreck survivor exhibition. Ciclorama Gallery, Valencia.

Lastly I would like to ask you to take an overall look at the wide range of work that we have done over this last decade, one which - in view of the way things are going - I hope we will not have to call “prodigious”!

Libertad y comprosmisoJohn Davies

ly-Nagy, Karel Te
ige, Walter Dexel, Theo
uyeron a
amplificar como nunca el im
pacto de
estas concentraciones humanas propi-
ciando la aparición de nuevos -aunque
seculares- mitos populares: los atletas.
Valores inherentes al deporte como la
preparación física y técnica, el impulso
de superación individual, la rivalidad y
competitividad, el espíritu
de equipo o
el dinamismo masificado de las grandes
competiciones, fascinaron a la vanguar-
dia futurista y constructivista compro-
metida con la utopía de la transforma-
ción social a través de las artes.
En la emergente Unión Soviética, ar-
tistas como Gustav Klucis o Alexander
Rodchenko ilustraron postales, carteles
o revistas como URSS en construcción
a través de radicales fotomontajes, ins-
tantáneas fotográficas e innovaciones
tipográficas. Los artistas de la vanguar-
dia constructiva soviética relataron y
enaltecieron las gestas y logros de sus
jóvenes atletas en las Espartakiadas
como un ejemplo del empuje arrolla-
dor de la nueva sociedad nacida con
la revolución. Las Espartakiadas, los
eventos deportivos de carácter in
ter-
nacionalista impulsados por el Partid
o
Comunista Soviético, se organizaron
como eventos amistosos y solidarios
entre los pueblos para hacer frente a
la celebración de los Juegos Olímpicos
Modernos reinstaurados en 1896 a los
que se acusaba desde los círculos de
izquierdas de promover, a través de la
competición deportiva, el chovinismo y
el ultranacionalismo belicista.
La Olimpíada de 1936 celebrada en
Berlín acabó convirtiéndose en un au-
téntico escaparate internacional de
difusión de los supuestos logros del
Nacional-socialismo de Adolf Hitler. La
fotógrafa y cineasta alemana Leni Rie-
fenstahl inmortalizó en su innovador
film documental Olympia los sueños de
supremacía racial aria encarnada en los
cuerpos y hazañas de los atletas alema-
nes. En el bando opuesto, y para com-
batir los efectos de la propaganda nazi,
el artista John Heartfield realizó para la
revista de filiación comunista AIZ una
serie de fotomontajes en los que de-
nunciaba la manipulación informativa
orquestada por Goebbels y la irrupción
de una nueva tipología arquitectónica:
los siniestros campos de concentración
diseñados por el nazismo para el exter-
minio racial.

FEZ CIUDAD INTERIORSala Exposiciones Glorieta. Plaza Cronista Chabret, nr. 6, sótano, Sagunto, Valencia.

en la ciudad: unos señalan procesos de deterioro;

2. Product benefits / 2.3 Faucets /2.3.0 Safe Touch
The latest innovations in materials have enabled Roca to develop the Safe Touch technology, which prevents burns by preventing the chrome-plated bodies of Roca’s thermostatic faucets from overheating. Safe Touch takes on greater importance with the little ones, ensuring a safe and enjoyable bath.
2. Product benefits / 2.3 Faucets /2.3.6 E-Faucet
The beauty of the brilliant, hard-wearing chrome-plated finish of all Roca faucets is possible thanks to the innovative Ever-shine chrome-plating system. The electrolytic coating provided by Ever-shine guarantees that each faucet will continue to dazzle over the years, also resisting stains and scratches and making cleaning easier.
2. Product benefits / 2.5 Hydrotherapy Cabins /2.5.3 Type of shower (Single-lever)
XX is an exclusive technology developed to enhance the overall whirlpool experience, a pleasant, relaxing and noiseless bath moment. The ultra-silent whirlpool is now possible. The revolutionary technology and design of the Roca whirlpool pump enhance water to circulate inside it, avoiding the use of the noisy fan employed to cool the engine (this function is performed by the water passing through the pump). The same power and performance with no more than 5 dB (A) ambient noise (the same decibels produced when whispering). Furthermore, the XX system maintains hot water temperature (capturing the engine power heat when passing through it), increasing the comfort and enjoyment of the whirlpool experience.

2. Product benefits / 2.3 Faucets /2.3.3 Softurn cartridge
If a faucet operates correctly it is thanks to the cartridge. The cartridge is the heart of all faucets, and Roca, being well aware of this importance, has equipped all of its cartridges with Softurn technology, a synonym of smoothness and comfort in handling the faucet lever and control and precision in selecting the required flow and temperature. The development of the exclusive Softurn technology has only been possible because Roca is one of the few faucet makers that design, develop and manufacture their own cartridges.

It also has an internal disc which, on turning, regulates the temperature field to save energy. 50% system click is built into all Roca single-lever faucets. In addition, Roca faucets have other advanced saving devices such as built-in latest-generation flow limiters that achieve a considerable reduction in water consumption.

Furthermore, the XX system maintains hot water temperature (capturing the engine power heat when passing through it), increasing the comfort and enjoyment of the whirlpool experience.
