The previous part of the road revamp project was completed in 2013 after the devel- opment of 5000 low-cost housing units close to Ottery. Construction work on this second phase started in early 2012 and was completed in September 2013 at a cost of R86m. If all goes well, the work on the next, third phase of the Strandfontein Road revamp should start within the next three weeks and should be completed by February 2017. Brett Herron, Mayoral Committee mem- ber for Transport for Cape Town, says work will affect traffic and that the impact and proposed alternative routes will be an- nounced closer to the commencement of the project. “The cost is approximately R263m and phase three of the upgrading of Strandfon- tein Road includes the section of the road be- tween Govan Mbeki Road and New Ottery Road and the section of the road between 5th Avenue and Emerald Way which are to be upgraded to four lanes,” Herron says. This work includes the following: . The extension of the surfaced construc- tion of Schaapkraal Road from 11th Avenue to 18th Avenue in order to provide access for those properties which will no longer be able to access Strandfontein Road directly. . The tarring of several gravel service roads. . Closing off some of the existing direct con- nections onto Strandfontein Road. . New intersections will be constructed for the existing and new roads into the Pelican Park development on the western side of Strandfontein Road. . The rehabilitation of the existing Strand- fontein Road between Emerald Way and Spine Road. . The provision of new special lanes for walking and cycling on both sides of the new road. The R263m project will also see the em- ployment of locals through the expanded public works programme, Herron confirms. “The contractor will use local labour that is sourced from the subcouncil database. Residents must please approach their local subcouncils to register their names on the database if they want to be part of the labour force to be utilised for this project,” he says. According to ward councillor Elton Jan- sen a contractor had already been appointed for a project on the opposite side of the road. “The works include the resurfacing of Strandfontein Road from Spine Road to Baden Powell Drive as well as the Strandfon- tein Road and Baden Powell Drive intersec- tion,” he says. The road works will take place from 08:00 to 16:00 for 15 working days. “The nature of the work entails the mill- ing and replacement of the road surface. In the Western Cape, 598 people were re-ported missing in the past year. 236 of

them were children. As Child Protection Week was recently

held, many community organisations tooktimeout to commemoratemissing children.National Child ProtectionWeek was held

in the first week of June.A national government statement ex-

plains that the initiative is “commemorat-ed in South Africa annually to raise aware-ness of the rights of children”.“The campaign also aims to mobilise all

sectors of society to ensure the care andpro-tection of children. The campaign is led bythe minister of social development; howev-er, it is incumbent on all of us to play a rolein protecting children and creating a safeand secure environment for them,” thestatement reads. Not only does it focus on missing chil-

dren, theweekalso raises awareness of chil-dren affected by crime, abuse and rape. Many organisations in Mitchell’s Plain

commemorated the initiative through vari-ous events and initiatives.Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson

Lieutenant IanWilliams says the police arecalling on communities to keep childrensafe.“As the police, we are committed to en-

suring the safety of our children. It is im-portant that parents, family members, teachers and community leaders are famil-iar with the role that they play in exposingany suspected child abuse or exploitation. It’s crucial for all these roleplayers to alsoeducate children on their safety,” he says.Last week the Community Police Forum

also held a vigil and focused its communityaccountability meeting on the initiative. In a recentmeetingwithPeople’s Post, po-

lice cluster commander Major-GeneralAbrahamGoss expressed the importance ofgaining children’s trust.“As the police we must show them that

it is okay to talk. They can report crime andviolence to the police. If they report, we cando something about it,” he said.Other organisations also held candle cer-

emonies and observed a moment of silencefor lives lost in gang crossfire and victimsof rape and abuse.Judy Oliver, a representative of Missing

Children South Africa, says the organisa-tion welcomes the annual initiative.“Every year we are so grateful for the op-

portunity to create much-needed aware-ness during Child Protection Week. For usas an organisation, the importance of thisweek and month is that we reach a lot offamilies and members of the public and areable to inform all of them about the realityof children going missing and importanttopics like human trafficking,” Oliver says.

The bush alongside the Strandfontein policestation is set to be cleared after complaints. On a proposal from local ward councillor

Elton Jansen, the City of Cape Town hasstarted a process to see the bush next to thepolice station cleared.People’s Post has previously reported on

complaints about the dense bush in Strand-fontein and Tafelsig after the discovery oftwo dumped bodies there.A thirdmanwas found in the bush onTues-

day. He had been hijacked and assaulted be-fore being left for dead.Questions around poor lighting and the

clearing of bush were asked in response tocomplaints that the poorly lit bush has creat-ed “the perfect dumping ground for bodies”.Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral committee

member for utility services, says lights in thearea had to be removed. “Unfortunately, theCity has been forced to remove street lightingin the area due to vandalism.“Because of this repeated vandalism, the

City has no plans to replace or install furtherlighting in Baden Powell or the bush area.”However, the dirt and bush on Spine Road

and Witsands will be cleared. Johan van derMerwe, mayoral committeemember for ener-gy, environmental and spatial planning, saysno timeline has been set for this.“The City’s environmental resource man-

agement departmentwill clear the alienvege-tation on the land inWitsands Road for secu-rity purposes. There are no timeframes atthis stage as it involves a procurement proc-ess,” he says. The Wolfgat Nature Reserve, where Im-

raan Daya’s body was dumped after he washijacked and killed last month, will be left asis, says Van der Merwe.“TheWolfgatNatureReserve is a protected

area that was proclaimed to protect the flora– bushes – and fauna in the area. For this rea-son, no bush clearing will be undertaken inthe Nature Reserve apart from the removalof invasive plants that occur in the area.”V What do you think should happen with the bush?Starting with the word “Mpost” SMS your thouhts to32516. Garage sale for the kidsSAMANTHA LEE

The Elmarie street committeehas taken a different approach

to financing its holiday pro-gramme.With several goods donated and

acquired, Elmarie Crescent wasclosed off and tables laid out for agarage sale on Saturday last week. The aim of the event was to raise

funds for the street committee’swinter holiday programme.

From clothing to toys, and evenbooks, it was a bargain hunter’sdream. In the end the committee made

more than R2000 towards theproject.Roellien Johnson, who assisted

in organising the event, says it wasa huge success. “Most of the resi-dents came out to support thecause and bought goods.”With the money raised they aim

to feed children during their holi-day programme and are planning

to do their programme after the lo-cal mosque and church completetheir respective programmes.“We have not settled on dates yet

but plans are in motion,” she says.“We want to set up games and

run an ‘adopt-a-child’ programme. We want the older children to helpthe young ones with their school-work and also have games and ahot meal,” she says.Johnson says they may have the

programme for aweek closer to theend of the school holidays.

The Elmarie street committee’s organisers say the garage sale raised morethan R2000 for their upcoming winter holiday programme.

Pupils know their beginningmiddleendTafelsig pupils recently showed they aretop-notch readers in a local competition. Alocal business hub also answered the callfor donations for the competition. The local roundof theCity ofCapeTown’s

annualGrade 7 reading competitionwas re-cently held at Tafelsig library.Librarian Jacqueline Topley says they

wanted to make sure that the pupils hadsome very special prizes to take home at theend of the day.“We approached Liberty Promenade for

help, and we were really pleased with theirgenerous donation,” she says.“Thanks to them, we were able to ensure

that there were first, second and third pri-zes for the children who participated.”This year Mitchell’s Heights, Searidge

Park Primary, Yellowwood Primary, Hu-guenot Primary and Tafelsig Primary wereinvited to take part.Unfortunately, Cascade Primary chose

not to participate as the school did not havea Xhosa participant.Little Eastville Pre-primary was also in-

vited to join the 90-strong audience, to en-courage a culture of reading in the commu-nity and among future pupils. The pupils were each given a short ex-

tract to read from a NaliBali book. Theywere then asked three comprehensionquestions and had to spell three words.Thewinner of theEnglish reading catego-

ry is fromSearidgeParkPrimary, while thewinners of the Afrikaans and Xhosa catego-ries are fromMitchell’s Heights. Each win-ner received a gift card worth R300.The audience, made up of parents and

teachers, were entertained by the CedarHigh band, and pupils performed a poemabout xenophobia. The pre-school children performed aXho-

sa song and McDonald’s mascot RonaldMcDonald entertained the crowd.

App makes it easierto chat next doorTIYESE JERANJI

Life is really too short to have to wait toget information or be able to talk toyour neighbours. This is what the developer of the Our-Hood app, BruceGood, believes. OurHoodwas founded by Good andWill Mellor, who are basedin Woodstock. This state-of-the-art appli-cation andwebsite help resi-dents to connect with theirneighbours immediately, inreal time. The idea behind this wasto get people involved withtheir neighbours and givethem the ability to commu-nicate in a faster way. Hesays the appmakes it easy toget help quickly – be it ifyour dog has gone missingor you just want to borrow a ladder orto find out the load shedding schedule.Good says it will help neighbours shareinformation to help improve their neigh-bourhoods and make them safe.“Our aim was to fight crime. This willallow for safer neighbourhoods as peoplecan get assistance in the blink of an eye,as they are able to communicate in realtime. This will allow them to share thingsand get to know their neighbourhood andtheir neighbours because themore peopletalk they will be closer to each other,” hesays. The app has a very strict verificationprocess for registration. This will allow

people in the neighbourhoods to connectmuch easier and not allow people whodon’t belong in the same neighbourhood.Instead of posting a notice in a shop-ping mall, this new app gives space forit and also has a section for importantnumbers.People can report crime, neighbours

can buy and sell itemsand share events.“Everything is justone click away. We arealso promoting the spiritof sharing. If you want togo camping but don’thave a campingmattressand someone in the areahas it, you can just poston there and someonewill help you quickly. The whole idea is to con-nect neighbourhoodsand promote safer com-munities. When people

interact they will be safer communities,”says Good.Since the app was launched last yearmore than 800 neighbourhoods havestarted using it.“People like it because they can reacheach other cheaply and quickly. Peopleare so amazed by it and it has unlockednew possibilities that they didn’t knowabout their neighbourhoods,” he says.Adrian Good, ADT general manager, fully supports the OurHood app and is ex-cited to be part of it. “We decided to getbehind this initiative because we recog-nise the value in real time connection. Inthis day and age it’s crucial that we know

and trust the people we see daily. Havinga platform that allows for constructivecommunication while promoting a safeand secure neighbourhood is advanta-geous to all,” says Good.V The app is free and can be downloaded atwww.ourhood.co.za, on the Apple store or GooglePlay store.

FIRST TIME’S A CHARM: Ben Matiso of Itheko Sport Athletic Club was the club’s firstmember to finish this year’s Comrades. Here he is being congratulated by fellow clubmembers at a postComrades event. Matiso earned a silver medal in a time of 6:01:24.He just missed out on a gold medal and the Wally Hayward medal for finishes under sixhours. What makes this even more remarkable is that it was Matiso’s first Comrades.Other members of the club who ran their first Comrades this year are Salih Solomon,Kamil Suleiman, Faizel Jacobs, Anwar Cassiem, Achmat Jacobs, Redewaan Williams,Taskeen Fakier, Fadeelah Kenny and Tasneem du Toit.
