elgravia residents were rudely awak-
ened by the stench of smouldering fire
which gutted the HiLite job lot centre
off Johnston Road on Friday.
The warehouse, which is situated next to
the main HiLite factory shop, was reported
to be on fire on Friday morning at 04:00.
The factory store was not affected and is
still operating.
The Citys fire and rescue service re-
ceived the call from a landline caller notify-
ing the department of the fire, confirms
spokesperson Theo Layne.
The first two fire engines were on scene
at 04:13. The fire was extinguished using
three water streams from the two fire en-
gines and a hydraulic platform.
It took almost three hours for them to
bring the blaze under control.
Layne explains that the firefighters used
self-contained breathing sets when they en-
tered the building to fight the fire inside as
well.
The fire was brought under control at
07:08 and the last vehicle left the scene at
10:44, following mop-up operations, adds
Layne.
Unknown cause
Thecause of the firehasnot yet beendeter-
mined, leaving HiLites owner, Yusuf Joe
HiLite Mohamed (75) in a state of shock.
Mohamed, who was still asleep, was alert-
ed to the incident after his son received a
phone call fromasecurity guardat theprem-
ises.
We did not know to what extent the fire
was until we came to the scene. There were
two fire brigades and they then got rein-
forcements afterwards; another four of them
(brigades) came.
The fire was very, very fierce and there
was a little bit of a wind. To contain it (the
fire) was quite a mission.

Mohamed says the warehouse was damaged
completely, along with all the stock it
housed.
Itmeans that it is a setback for the compa-
ny in the sense that it was a service tomany,
many people who are living out of that shop,
because it was a shop they (the surrounding
community) live out of, to buy products to
resell.
The hawkers, the traders and all those
who are clothing and textile workers they
are the people who will be at a loss, but of
course theywill now come to themain store.
Itwill have a knock-on effect, because all our
stockwas there, all the haberdashery, all the
fabrics . . . everything was damaged.
Affectionately known by many as the
man in the hat, Mohamed explains that the
warehouse could be up and running again
in 30 days, if all further processes to get the
property back in working order go without
incident.
I hope that we could be back before
Christmas.
After the fire a visibly subdued Mohamed
lamented the fact that nothing could be sal-
vaged from the blaze. But he remained cir-
cumspect about the entire ordeal.
Whatever is left is shop-soiled,wet. There
is nothing that can be salvaged. When I look
inside over there, it is a sorry sight.
It was a shock first of all, but I overcame
that shock and my first reaction was every-
thing is in Gods hands, we must be satis-
fied. Youve got it today, tomorrow you
dont have it.

wo people were the victims
of armed robbers in Athlone
on Friday, say local police.
Aman, whowas on duty read-
ing water meters in Gatesville,
was robbedat knife point onFri-
day after two unknown men
asked him for money.
The victim, after saying that
he did not havemoney for them,
was threatened when the sus-
pects drew knives and proceed-
ed to search the water meter
reader.
They took the cash that he did
have as well as the water meter
he was using to do his job.
The suspects fled on foot.
On Friday evening at about
18:30, a woman was robbed of
her handbag by another two un-
known suspects on the corner of
Sixth Avenue and Belgravia
Road.
The woman was isolated by
the two men when the incident
took place.
One of the suspects then alleg-
edly motioned to take out a
weapon,which caused thewom-
an to drop her handbag.
After she dropped the bag, the
other suspect took the bag, but
was pushed away by the woman
before she fled on foot.
The suspects chased her, but
to no avail.
Theymanaged to steal the vic-
timswatch, aswell as cash, jew-
ellery and clothing which were
in the bag.
No arrests had been made at
the time of going to print.

Help comes for Manenberg crche
CHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
A
fter hearing the pleas of a local crche,
adoctorandacontractor in theareahave
come on board to tighten security at the
crche.
Young vandals have targeted Manenberg
Pre-school Centre (Youth destroy day-
care, Peoples Post, 21 July). The school has
since received a fence, limiting foot traffic
through the premises.
Dr Randall Ortel says he approached a
contractor in the areawho agreed to help the
crche tighten security.
This crche has been in the community
for many years and there have been many
incidents of vandalism. I sought help from
the contractors in the area who are busy
with renovations and upgrades at schools in
the area and one of the contractors has come
forward to assist, Ortel says.
He adds the contractor agreed to supply
off-cut materials to the early childhood de-
velopment centre and was so far able to se-
cure a gate at the back of the crche.
Our next step is to look into having light-
ing supplied at the crche as well, which the
contractor has also agreed to do. Second-
hand fluorescent lights, that are still in a
good condition, will be fitted and we will be
fixing switches for these lights as well. The
premises are very dark at night, which al-
lowed criminals to carry out their illegal ac-
tivity, Ortel explains.
Kit Electrical contractor Chris Koekemo-
er says the company was approached by Or-
tel for off-cut materials.
As subcontractors we are new to Manen-
berg andwe saw the need of these people and
we decided to get on board. Normally what
happens to off-cut material is that we take
it back to the City of Cape Town so we may
be credited for the material, but you never
get your full money worth when getting that
credit. Because of this we decided to rather
donate these gates and lights to the crche
as it is a worthy cause, Koekemoer says.
With this work having been done, Koeke-
moer urges other businesses in the area to
help the crche as well.
I am now challenging other people, orga-
nisations and businesses to assist if they
can, even if it is to just paint the school. We
want these children to be in an environment
that is conducive to their upbringing. A hap-
py kid is a successful kid, he says.
Principal Sarah Petersen says she is de-
lighted the good Samaritans chose to help
the crche with its need for safety and secu-
rity.
I am very grateful to Ortel and Koekemo-
er for seeing it fit to help us secure the place.
There have been no incidents and we also
feel safer, she says.
Petersen says she appreciates the effort
they have put in, especially due to the staff
having to ask help from many people with-
out success.
We have been waiting for this for a long
time and the feeling that it is finally taking
shape is indescribable, she adds.

Ortel is Chris Koekemoer and his team from Kit Electrical who assisted the creche with
materials to improve safety and security. PHOTO: CHEVON BOOYSEN

R36 000 taken from home
R
obberies appear to be on the increase in
Athlone after R35 800 was stolen from a
home in Rylands on Monday morning dur-
ing a house robbery.
Athlone polices Sergeant Zita Norman
said a 49-year-old women, her 17-year-old
daughter and their domestic worker were
inside the house. Seven men gained access
to the property forcefully after using crow-
bars, before spreading through the house.
The womenwere tied up. One of the women
was then forced to take the robbers to the
safe and open it for them.
The robbersmade offwithR35 800 in cash,
jewellery and various electronics.
Norman confirmed that the robbers had
two firearms, a knife and a crowbar in their
possession. No arrests have been made.
A 24-year-old woman was robbed at gun
point after stopping her car on Jakes Ger-
wel Drive early on Saturday morning. It is
alleged that she was lost after driving from
Kenilworth and tried to ask a passerby for
directions. She was then threatened at gun
point by one of those she had asked for help.
It is understood that the victim was robbed
of her iPhone, cash, cigarettes, bank card,
jacket and shoes to the value of R8330.
A few hours later, a 43-year-old man was
robbed of R11 000 in Hazel Road.
The victim collected the cash from Ra-
woot Butchery at around 10:45 before re-
turning to his car. Upon opening the boot
of his car, a white Audi with an unknown
registration number with three unknown
males stopped next to him and threatened
him with a firearm. The suspects then took
the money and fled the scene in their car.
Later on Saturday afternoon a 26-year-old
manwas robbed of his watchwhile walking
down Temple Street. Police say he was
threatened by an unknownmanwith a fire-
arm. It is believed that his Police watch is
valued at R1644.

Athlone icon celebrated
EARL HAUPT
@EarlHaupt
A
thlone native and political icon of the
struggle Dulcie September was once
again honoured as the provincial depart-
ment of cultural affairs and sport launched
its oral history framework document, as
well as a travelling exhibition named in
Septembers honour.
The ceremony at the Western Cape ar-
chive and records management service in
the city centre onWednesday last week was
hosted by provincial minister Anroux Mar-
ais.
According to the department, the frame-
work document offers guidelines for the
process of collecting oral history and ensur-
ing that data collection is done ethically in
order for the information to be used.
The travelling exhibition also uses infor-
mation that was gathered through the proc-
ess of interviews to tell Septembers story.
Some of her friends and family members
who helped themuseum service through in-
terviews were present at the launch.
History cannot give us a programme for
the future, but it can give us a fuller under-
standing of ourselves, and of our common
humanity, so that we can better face the fu-
ture, said Marais in her address, making
a direct reference to Robert Penn Warrens
iconic statement about the importance of
history.
Our history need not be lost as older gen-
erations pass on.We have a duty to keep our
histories alive in our communities and
within government so that future genera-
tions can celebrate our heritage.
Marais honouredSeptember byunveiling
the travelling exhibition, intended to im-
prove social inclusion.
She is someone that others can identify
with, coming from humble beginnings her-
self. This is anexhibitionof archivalmateri-
al and it inspires ordinary people to under-
stand the enduring value of their own docu-
ments, maps and pictures. We gain insight
into Septembers life through her familys
personal archive, some police records,
records fromDulcies Paris office and news-
paper clippings. These are memories and
they tell a story. We are thankful to Septem-
bers family and friends whowere very gen-
erous with their time and their records.
It is hoped that visitors to the exhibition
will see the value in their own personal ar-
chives and will be inspired to donate them
to the provincial archives.
The gathering of oral history is a process
in which information is gathered by inter-
viewing a person about his or hermemories
and recording these for use by future gener-
ations.
With the official theme of Heritage Day,
our living heritage, I am proud to an-
nounce that the department has developed
an oral history framework to redress the
challenges faced with recording oral histo-
ry, said Marais.
The framework includes:
. providingminimumstandards and guide-
lines for staffwhoare gathering oral history
and its processes;
. clarifying roles that various departments
play in oral history processes;
. establishing a framework that regulates
legalities that are associatedwithoral histo-
ry recording; and
. establishing a provincial database of oral
histories to be housed in the Western Cape
archives and records service.
Elizabeth van der Heyden, a friend of the late apartheid activist Dulcie September, talks to
provincial minister Anroux Marais about a travelling exhibition on Septembers life.
Have you recently lost your home to a scam?
Are you due money and have not received it?
Residents who have been affected are urged
to come forward with their stories.
One woman signed an agreement after re-
ceiving an auction notice. Her debt had been
paid and her house sold, but she never re-
ceived any part of the auction income. She is
owedmore than R100 000. She had been prom-
ised half of the proceeds of the sale but has
been left penniless and in bad health.
Some residents suspect a con artist has
been working in several areas for the past
three years.
The person is said to approach vulnerable
women in the Western Cape. He apparently
charms them into a deal.

EARL HAUPT
@EarlHaupt
S
ubcouncil 11 has adopted a mo-
tion to develop solidwaste drop-
off sites in Hazendal and Kewtown
or Silvertown.
The motion stems from an un-
dertaking by theCity of CapeTown
to address the illegal dumping of
solid waste in rivers, canals and
public spaces.
Ward councillor for the area Su-
zette Little says that despite her re-
peated requests, nothing has been
done to get rid of the litter and solid
waste in Athlones four main riv-
ers (the Bokmakierie, Blomvlei,
Jakkalsvlei and Vygieskraal riv-
ers) as a result of illegal dumping.
Emails dating back to 2011 ex-
plain that the Bokmakierie River
would be used as a pilot project in
whichaholistic approachwouldbe
adopted. The collaborative effort
was intended to create awareness
at schools in the area about the
health risks of illegal dumping, in-
volve law enforcement officials to
curb the frequency of illegal dump-
ing into the river aswell as develop
a solid waste drop-off site in Bok-
makierie itself.
Costly to use
The current solid waste drop-off
site for the area is situated off the
N2 near the site of the old cooling
towers.
However, the City says that resi-
dents in the area have to incur
transport costs to dispose of their
solid waste, so they feel discour-
aged to follow the legal process of
getting rid of theirwaste and resort
to illegal dumping.
Little maintained in the sub-
council meeting that these sites
would let the community use the
river in a more productive way.
Meanwhile, another motion for
ward 49 was adopted by the sub-
council to carry out repairs and
maintenance on rented flats owned
by the City in Kewtown.
The reason for the motion, ac-
cording to Little, is to minimise
fire risk and improve safety follow-
ing an increase in gang violence
in the area over the last five years.
The maintenance will include
the implementation of a number of
safetymeasures, such as the instal-
lation of fire extinguishers in each
block of flats in Kewtown. The rub-
bish bin huts should also be
cleared to have only the Citys
black bins left behind.
Other measures which will be
put forward to the City council are
tohave graffiti removed fromstair-
wells of the flats, with signage to go
up at every entrance to instruct
those entering of the prohibition
on activities in the stairwells.

New wheelie bin is
trophy pot for City
T
he City of Cape Town has won a national
award for a wheelie bin.
It was recognised at the Recycled Product
of the Year awards, hosted by the South Af-
rican Plastics Recycling Organisation (Sa-
pro) and Plastics SA and held on Monday
last week.
TheSapro trophywas awarded to theCity
and Mpact Containers for their Fifty/50
wheelie bin that was entered in the Recy-
cled Content category.
The new bins carry a 10-year guarantee
and are subjected to all necessary testing
and performance requirements.
The competition acknowledges products
that are made from recycled material and
encourages brand owners to consider recy-
cled plastics as a material of choice.
Sapro chairperson Jaco Breytenbach
says that they had high hopes when they
launched their first awards in 2010.
Each year that we host this competition,
it is proven over again that talent runs
broad and deep in our country and that the
plastics recycling industry has an impor-
tant role to play in South Africa, he says.
BarbaraThompson, national deputymin-
ister of environmental affairs, officiated the
opening of the awards and said: Last year
South Africa managed to recycle 315 600
tons of all plastics products manufactured
back into raw material. This places South
Africa amongst the top mechanical recy-
cling countries in the world.
Ruben Brandt, Janine Charters, Loutjie de Jongh and Lance Kallis of Mpact Containers with the
trophy for the South African Recycled Product of the Year.

T
he World Tourism Organisation fore-
casts that by 2030 the majority (57%) of
international travel will be to developing
countries such as South Africa.
This is very good news for South Africa,
given the key role attractions play in driv-
ing economic growth and creating jobs, Sa-
bine Lehmann,managing director of Table
Mountain, said in an address at a World
Tourism Day event.
The event took place in the run-up to
World TourismDay on Sunday and was in-
spired by the 1Billion Jobs, 1BillionOppor-
tunities campaign, which highlights that
the 1 billion tourists travelling the world
each year create a billion opportunities for
progress andpoverty eradication, especial-
ly for developing countries.
Bucket lists
Attractions are a key motivation for
tourists to visit. Everybody wants to share
a selfie to show that they have been there
and done that. Bucket lists are the new
goal sets, said Lehmann.
In turn, these attractions, being part of
the service economy, play a key role in cre-
ating full-time and seasonal employment.
Lehmann, drawing on insights gained at
this years Attractions Africa Conference,
said the big question was what would be
perceived as an attraction worth visiting
in ten years time.
The greatest amount of uncertainty lies
on the demand side what will motivate
customers to come to our attractions in the
future? she said.
Arecent study in theNetherlands found
that over thenext tenyears attractionman-
agers need to focus on quality, authentici-
ty, sustainability and interaction both on
site and online.
Lehmann, in welcoming the news that
global tourists will increasingly head for
destinations in emerging economies,
warned that itwas still important to attract
local tourists.
We have seen how local visitors to the
cableway have increased steadily as we in-
troduced a number of specials throughout
the year, ensuring South Africans too can
visit accounting for 45% of our visitor
numbers annually, she said.
For attractions to be authentic they
need to include and speak to the local do-
mestic market.
SA to gain in tourism future

Protectors eye
partying women
TIYESE JERANJI
@jeranji
A
new non-profit organisation in Clare-
mont is dedicated to the safety ofwomen
in Claremont nightclub areas.
ClubWatch Protection Service (CPS) is
two months old and patrols mostly on
Thursday to Saturday nights. The five pa-
trollers say they couldnt sit weekend after
weekend and listen to the stories of rape, as-
sault, spiking of drinks and attacks onwom-
en who go to clubs to have fun. So they de-
cided to do something.
The friends teamed up andwill offer their
service as part of their passion for security.
They watch that women at clubs are not
harassedorpickpocketedand that they take
a registered cab when they go home. They
also check the permits of taxi drivers.
The idea for CPS came about after the
friends heard in the media about the attack
on 18-year-old Sanet de Lange after a night
of partying with friends in Claremont.
The founder of CPS, who doesnt want to
be named because of the sensitivity of their
work, says they have to help were they can.
Bouncers are mainly concerned with
fights. They dont really care about the
small, petty things and that will be our fo-
cus.We used to party in the area aswell and
we still have friends and sisters who party
in the area so we want to make sure that
they are protected and there is no-one who
takes advantage of them because they had
too much to drink, he says.
He encourages those who go partying to
stick together as there is safety in numbers.
Dont let your friend wander off for
hours if you dont know where she is.
We are not here to step on toes or tell
them how to have fun, but we are keeping
our eyes open so they dont fall prey to peo-
ple who are waiting for them to get drunk.
Our concern is just reckless behaviour
after one has had a lot of classes. We work
in pairs, so there is no chance of leaving one
of our guys with a female. At the same time,
we dont want someone to feel stalked so we
just talk funny things and we walk close to
the person so that we make sure that they
get to their cars safely, he says.
Claremont police spokesperson Sergeant
Lindile Dubela says they welcome the initi-
ative.
All I can say for now is that anyone who
wants to help fight crime in our area is wel-
come, says Dubela.
A new non-profit organisation in Claremont is patrolling clubs on party nights to make sure
that women dont fall prey to criminals.

BLOODY MOON: Three phases of the supermoon eclipse as seen from Rondebosch
Common in the early hours of yesterday morning. It happens to be the closest supermoon
of this year. Its the Northern hemispheres harvest moon, or full moon nearest the
September equinox. Its the Southern hemispheres first full moon of spring. This Septem-
ber full moon is also called a blood moon, because it presents the fourth and final eclipse
of a lunar tetrad: Four straight total eclipses of the moon, spaced at six lunar months
(full moons) apart. PHOTO: WYNAND VILJOEN

ASTRID FEBRUARIE
@FebAstrid
S
everal steps are being taken by the City
council to ensure the Retreat drop-off fa-
cility in 10th Avenue is ready for the influx
of traffic once the LadiesMile drop-off facili-
ty closes this week.
Ward councillor Kevin Southgate visited
the site last week with two other Protea sub-
councilmembers and twoCity of Cape Town
officials.
Wemet to establishwhat steps canbe tak-
en now to ensure the facility can accommo-
date the extra traffic, he says.
One of the first things would be to address
the road leading into the drop-off site.
The road will be rehabilitated to ensure
the road surface is up to standard, so as not
to cause damage to any vehicles travelling
in and out of the facility, he says.
A request for speed humps has been in-
cluded, to deter motorists from speeding in
10th Avenue.
This road is extremelybusyand there are
trucks, bakkies, lightmotor vehicles and pe-
destrians using this road, so the safety of ev-
eryone on the road is being considered.
The officials will also create a drive-
through option, making it easier for people
to drop their waste and leave the facility
without having to sit in a long queue.
We want it to run as smooth as possible
without anyone getting in anyone elses
way. This wouldmean that there will be one
entrance and one exit leading out the back
of the facility, he says.
Southgate adds that there are also plans
in place for a chipping facility, but the facili-
ty will be closed on three sides of the struc-
ture to decrease noise and dust pollution.
This facility will only be built sometime
next year when the drop-off facilitys bound-
ary is extended, he says.

Pluto, a 7-and-a-half-year-old Boxer dog
who went missing while his owner was
surfing inGranger Bay,was reportedly sto-
len and sold for R50.
His bereft owner, Robert Abel, told
News24 on Sunday that he left his sweet-
natured pet on the beach on Friday after-
noon while he hit the waves something
he often did, as Pluto is well-known in the
area.
Everyone loves the dog . . . He is legend-
ary atmost of the surfing beaches of the At-
lantic seaboard.
When Abel came out the water, he saw
that Pluto was gone.
He approached a couple on the beach.
The woman told him that the dog had been
with them before, but then her friend sold
him for R50 to a woman in a car.
She told him the woman was at a super-
market with the dog, and would return.
You will get your dog back, the woman
apparently told Abel.
However, shortly afterwards, the couple
disappeared from the beach area. Abel said
they appeared to be homeless.
JP Smith, mayoral committee member
for safety and security, says that while he
has not heard of the abduction of dogs from
beaches, he knows of two cases where dogs
were snatched in the vicinity of their own-
ers homes and sold.
He believes the chance is slim that Plu-
to will be spotted.
The selling of domestic animals is illegal.
Legally, a pet is considered property, so its
abduction is classified as theft. However,
people have a much greater attachment to
the pets compared to other property, says
Smith, adding he would be devastated if
anything similar ever happened to one of
his three cats.
Smith urges people who experience a
similar predicament to contact the City on
021 480 7700 as they would be able to alert
various officials.
Pluto has a reddish-brown coat and had
a black leather collar on when he went
missing. He is also micro-chipped. Abel is
offering a R5000 reward for his return.

New gen students
sing with Sarafina
A
group of born-frees is
bringing the story of the
Soweto uprising to a new gen-
eration of youth.
Mbongeni Ngemas musical
Sarafina!was first performed
in June 1987 at the Market
Theatre.
Twenty-eight years later
the born-free PerformingArts
students of Northlink College
(Tygerberg campus) are
bringing the evergreen pro-
duction back to life.
Based on the 1976 Soweto
youth uprisings, Sarafina!
tells the story of a young
schoolgirl not afraid to fight
for her rights who inspires
her peers to do the same. In-
spired by her teacher, Sarafi-
na leads her classmates in
protests. Jailed, tortured and
humiliated, Sarafina returns
to school to pursue her dream
of playing Nelson Mandela in
her school production.
Liberation songs, like
Sechaba, and the popular
Mbaqanga (indigenous town-
ship rock) songs, like
Kilimanjaro, rub shoulders in thisNge-
ma and Hugh Masikela collaboration,
alongside the well-known gospel version of
The Lords Prayer.
A fusion of infectious dance styles mixed
with a modern township twist express the
score of Sarafina! The production is direct-
ed by Kobus Hanekom with musical direc-
tion by Roshan Chakane and choreography
by Tyron Zoutman.
V Sarafina! will be on stage at the Baxter Theatre
fromThursday to Saturday. Tickets are available from
Computicket.
Abigail Mei, Shaundeon Afrika and Ivanita Oelf star in the
Northlink College production of Sarafina! at the Baxter.
CONTRAST STUDIO

show by the CRATEcol-
lective will be hosted at
YoungBlood Gallery in
Cape Town from
Thursday. The collective
by Mr Migo (pictured),
Marti Lund and Skuba-
listo presents an urban
art exhibition. They will
work between the studio
and the street to explore
their views of the urban
space from contrasting
points of reference and
personal experience. The
work of CRATEcollective
will use the three
separate spaces of the
triple-story gallery to
present an exploration of
their diverse styles. Visit

IT TAKES TWO: Alvon Collison
and Cat Simoni will be present-
ing their new show The Love
Affair at the NG Church hall in
Milnerton on Sunday at 16:00.
The show explores the ups and
downs, ins and outs and highs
and lows of being in a relation-
ship, through well-known songs.
Tickets for the show cost R120
and include snacks. Call

Why the fuss about
diesel fumes?
N
itrogen oxides poisonous gases that
contribute to acid rain and suffocating
smog are found in the fumes of diesel cars
like the ones Volkswagen has admitted to
fitting with emissions-cheating software.
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are poisonous gas-
es derived from nitrogen and oxygen com-
bustion under high pressure and tempera-
tures. NOx is composed of nitric oxide (NO)
and a smaller percentage ofmore poisonous
nitrogen dioxide (NO2).
Fossil-fuel burning is by far the main
man-made source, from cars, trucks, trac-
tors and boats or industrial processes like
power generation and cement-making.
Natural sources include bacterial activi-
ty, volcanic outbursts and lightning.
NOx can cause breathing problems, head-
aches, chronically reduced lung function,
eye irritation, loss of appetite and corroded
teeth.
Indirectly, it can affect humans by dam-
aging the ecosystems we rely on in water
and on land byharming animals and plants.
Also emitted in diesel fumes are solid par-
ticles which can penetrate deep into the
lungs and cause cancer, chronic breathing
problems and premature death in people
with heart or lung disease. The World
Health Organisation has classified diesel
engine exhaust as cancer-causing.
Clamping down
The European Union, United States and
other countries haveNOx reduction targets
in a bid to improve public health.
But analysts and environmental groups
havewarned that actual car emissionswere
likelymuchhigher thanreportedones cre-
ating a false sense of confidence in thequali-
ty of the airwe breathe, and preventing ade-
quate measures from being taken.
James Longhurst, an environmental sci-
ence professor at the University of theWest
of England says: Concentrations of NOx
have not fallen as much as expected despite
the introduction of new technology on vehi-
cles.
If the deliberate bypassing of emission
control systems is more widespread than
just Volkswagen diesel sales in the US, then
it may help explain what has been observed
in measurements of air pollution in cities.

An estimated one in 33 SouthAfricanwomenwill develop
breast cancer.
This is according to the 2009 National Cancer Registry
which also cites the disease as the most common in wom-
en of all races after non-melanoma skin cancer.
This week marks the beginning of Breast Cancer
Awareness Month in South Africa and while many are
aware of the risks associated with cancer, many forget
about the importance of simple checks in helping with
early detection.
According to the national health department, as many
as 90% of patients survive breast cancer, but only when
it is detected and treated early.
This is why regular self-breast examination is impera-
tive. Cancer knows no boundaries. While annual mam-
mograms are recommended for women over 40, breast
cancer can affect young and old, whether you are male
or female.
It is important for women, andmen, to knowwhat feels
normal for their bodies. The provincial health depart-
ment cites an unusual lump or mass as the most common
sign of breast cancer. Lumps that are hard with uneven
edges and painless are more likely to be cancerous, but
some may be tender, soft and rounded.
Other symptoms include swelling, skin dimpling and
thickening of the nipple.
It is important to get any unusual developments
checked by a medical professional. There are a number
of SouthAfrican organisations, likeCansa andPinkDrive
who offer free screening to ensure that women around
the country can get the early help they need.
Cansa also offers valuable support and resources to
those affected by cancer via their website at www.can-
sa.org.za and call centre on 080 022 6622.
So in the spirit of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, do
yourself a favour and check yourself out.
My mothers bench
A bench in St Georges Mall that has
been broken down by a group of Khois-
an activists has been a topic of interest
recently. I have been wondering whether
to respond to this issue as I dont want
to be fighting my own people. I have
subsequently decided to respond and
those who so regularly do, may crucify.
The bench a small mosaic bench
has been around for a couple of years
now, and to be honest I also do not
agree with such a small attribution to
the matriarch of our nation. I would like
to see a huge majestic work of art much
like a statue erected to memorialise her,
especially since we still dont know
where her burial site is. As insignificant
as it seems, this bench was seen by
others like me, who tend to turn a
negative into a positive, as a comfort.
This bench offered a weary traveller rest
much the same as my mother, Krotoa,
did. My mother Krotoa welcomed me to
sit on her lap, much the way I could sit
on an inanimate object such as a bench
when I was feeling weary, as walking in
Cape Town could render one extremely
exhausted.
Was the bench, as I suspect, desecrat-
ed purely on a whim, or was there a
mandated agreement to do so?
Knowing the people involved, I would
go with option one. Irasa has in the past
done many Khoisan actions and when
the going got tough, the broader Khois-
an community was called for assistance,
much the same as now when various
people were called after the action
asking for assistance. This supports my
saying it was a whim, because if it was
a mandated call, all known Khoisan
organisations would have been involved.
Last week saw seven people being
honoured in Cape Town by having
bridges named after them. Two of these
seven are true Khoisan activists and the
aim of the project is to say that these
people played a part in bridging divides,
and I agree with this.
The question one now needs to ask is
are these bridges safe from Khoisan
activists, who may on a whim decide
these bridges are not fit to be named
after their leaders because dirty feet and
dog poo will surely defile these spaces?
I will support any Khoisan activism if
it is not harming to my fellow Khoisan
family. I would suggest they should have
followed protocol like writing and
meeting the mayor, and if no joy was
found, to have used softer protest action
and the media to raise the awareness of
the bench, and to have gotten public
participation, because the bench was not
put there just for them and everyone
does not see it in the light as they do. In
fact, I would have liked the issue to
have been maturely debated before such
drastic action was taken and once again
the Khoi are seen as lawless.
The desecration of the bench should
have been the last resort in a well-
thought and discussed plan of action.

Maidens Cove is fine as is
With regards to the meeting held at the
podium to discuss the proposed sale and
development of a heritage site, in
particular Maidens Cove.
I read with disbelief statements that
Maidens Cove is not all its made out
to be, that its a crime hotspot, used
as a dumping site and that truckloads
of rubbish are carted away regularly.
These untruths are nothing but a cheap
smear campaign to discredit the popular
and free picnic spot with free parking
along the Atlantic.
The area is patrolled constantly by
law enforcement and police. Lifeguards
are on duty during peak periods. There
is 24-hour on-site security.
Its safe. No recorded drownings. Over
the years I have yet to hear of any car
break-ins at Maidens Cove.
If its such a crime hotspot, why are
there countless family outings, wed-
dings, pensioner excursions, kiddies
parties, team building, company end-of-
year celebrations, photo shoots, movie
shoots and sport club outings happening
there? No fabricated crime stats will
persuade visitors otherwise.
It is a restricted area after 18:00. It is
securely fenced off. Gates are locked. A
boom on Victoria Road prevents any
vehicle from entering the parking lot.
When does anybody get the opportunity
to use Maidens Cove as a dumping site?
How can Maidens Cove be considered
a crime hotspot if theres no-one there
after 18:00 except security?
Outsiders coming to Maidens Cove
are the victims of crime really now. I
detect some racial undertones. Although
Maidens Cove is becoming more and
more a multicultural space, the over-
whelming majority of picnickers are
people of colour.
The solution? Sell off Maidens Cove,
which will stop coloureds from coming
into the area to picnic, thereby reducing
crime. Why not go back to apartheid
and declare Clifton/Camps Bay a white
area and bar people of colour entering?
By all means, upgrade Maidens Cove.
Want to save taxpayers money? Install a
pump to fill the kiddies pool with
seawater instead of wasting millions of
litres of fresh water to keep a leaking
pool filled. Keep both ablution blocks
clean and open until closing time.
Upgrade and increase the number of
braai spots. Get the sprinkler system
working. Extend the hours of opening
times. During the height of summer
picnickers are requested to vacate at
17:30, when the sun is still high.
Its a heritage site. Its sacred to
Capetonians. Weve been going there for
generations, especially during apartheid.
Dont sell an inch of Maidens Cove.
