CHARLOTTE - Thereisn’t anything typical aboutBetsy Smith’s downtownclothing store.
From the polka dots onBella Grande’s awning tothe store’s friendly live-incat Maxine, who cuddleswith customers while theyshop - the consignment op-eration caters to plus-sizewomen in its own specialway.
“I didn’t have the abilityto foresee anything,” saidSmith, about her plans whenshe opened the store in thespring of 2006. “I didn’t haveany clue how it would playout.”
Today, Smith is a successstory. This February Smithwas the first-ever recipientof the Charlotte Chamberof Commerce’s Novice Im-pact Award. And Bella
Grande is this year’s Peo-ple’s Choice for “FavoriteSpeciality Shop” and “Fa-vorite Women’s Store.”
At Bella Grande Smithand her staff strive to offertheir customers a “shoppingexperience.” They offer as-sistance and quality mer-chandise.
Ninety-five percent of theclothing in the store is thereon consignment. Sellerssplit the profits on theiritems with Smith. It may nothave been a popular meth-od to shop when the storeopened but in 2008, when
the economy became slug-gish, consignment shoppingbecame very popular.
“They are just poppingup everywhere now,” saidSmith, of similar operationsin the area.
Bella Grande though fillsa niche, she said. “We real-ly are the favorite shop ofmany people.” And 75 per-cent of them travel to Char-lotte to shop there.
That means somethingto Smith. So does the re-spect and understanding ofthe Charlotte business com-munity.
Smith said when she firstopened her store “I had toprove myself.”
And today the sign nextto sales desk at the front ofBella Grande speaks to thetrue nature of her opera-tion. “Friends gather here,”it reads.
Smith hopes they contin-ue to. “If I want to do re-peat business with peoplethey need to have a reasonto come back.”

CHARLOTTE — Hayes GreenBeach Memorial Hospital is proofthat independent operations cansucceed in tough economic times.
In the last few years the Char-lotte hospital has begun initialwork to bring an $18 million“health park” to the former Fel-pausch building on Lawrence Av-enue.
HGB has hired five new doc-tors in the last year and expandedits women’s health programming, with the help of a clientele-basedfocus group of community mem-bers.
Readers named Hayes GreenBeach the community’s “FavoriteHospital,” in this year’s People’sChoice Awards.
Carrie Rathbun Hawks, direc-tor of Marketing Communicationsfor the hospital, said the hospitalstaff and officials feel invested inthe Charlotte community — some-thing they have stated in the hospi-tal’s mission statement.
“You don’t see that with a lotof hospitals and it’s part of what
makes us unique,” she explained. That may just be the tip of the
iceberg though.HGB staff and officials have tak-
en their “community involvement”seriously. Two years ago the hos-pital began working with the localorganization CAN Do! to start a“generosity” push within the com-munity.
HGB brought nationally-knownspeaker LeAnn Kaiser Carlson toCharlotte for several talks and then
took things one step further —establishing the “Power of One”Fund. The hospital committed todonating one percent of its annualnet revenue to the fund, which willeventually go to pay for commu-
nity service efforts that follow thetheme of local generosity.
Rathbun Hawks said the “gen-erosity” efforts were, and still are, about being involved in the com-munity.
“We felt it was a way for us tomake an investment in the com-munity without being in charge ofthe effort,” she said.
“We’ve certainly had challeng-es in the last year, just as allbusinesses have,” said Matt Rush,FACHE, president and CEO ofHGB. “But our staff and physicianshave pulled together repeatedly tokeep us on track with excellent pa-tient care and customer service. Asin the past, we wouldn’t have beenas successful as we have been thispast year without our team and thesupport and confidence our com-munity has in HGB.”
In truth, Rathbun Hawks saidmost of the hospital’s efforts with-in the community are in line withits approach to overall health. Shesaid it is a proactive approach tohealth that extends beyond physi-cal wellness.
Rathbun Hawks said the hospi-tal also does its best to succeedin the market without competingwith larger operations.
“We know we can’t go toe to toewith Sparrow and Ingham,” shesaid. “That’s not our intent. We arepartners with them.”

When co-owners MikeHammond and MikeRodocker opened Mike’sSports Page downtown twoyears ago they knew the ven-ture had potential.
Rodocker took a walkthrough the building a fewyears ago, previously Bai-ley’s, and thought about anidea the two men had dis-cussed 15 years prior —wouldn’t it be fun to openand run a local bar?
For Rodocker, a Char-lotte resident for over 35years, the idea had long beena dream.
“Anytime I ever sat at abar and talked to a bartend-er I always thought it wouldbe cool to be on the otherside of the conversation,” hesaid.
Today, both men are —and business is good. Mike’sSports Page is the recipientof three People’s ChoiceAwards for favorite bar, fa-
vorite sports bar and favor-ite burger.
Rodocker said the busi-ness venture has meant a lotof “on the job” training.
“I think it was a whirl-wind,” he said, of the bar’sfirst year. “It went by sofast.”
But Hammond said thesuccess can be attributedto several factors, includinggood customer service, aloyal and talented staff andtasty food.
“People have fun whenthey come in,” he said. “Wetreat them right. We greetthem at the door.”
The full-service bar of-fers live entertainment threenights a week, reasonableprices and popular burgers.
“I’m as proud of the foodwe put on the table as thebeers we serve,” saidRodocker, who explainedthat several of the bar’s 13employees worked for Bai-ley’s as well. The establish-ment still orders its meatfrom the same vendor.
And while many smallbusinesses are struggling orfolding in a trying economicclimate, Hammond said henever doubted that openingMike’s Sports Page was agood investment.
“I was never nervousabout it,” he said. “We’rehonored that we were giventhese awards.”
Mike’s Sports Page is lo-cated at 107 S. Cochran andcan be reached at 543-9849.

CHARLOTTE — AmandaLipsey thinks photographywas her “calling” long beforeshe ever realized it.
The Potterville HighSchool graduate, now livingin Charlotte, went throughhundreds of disposable cam-eras as a child. Every mo-ment was photographed, butit might have remained ahobby.
Then Lipsey gave birth toher son Jeremiah, now 4.
“I just started taking pic-tures of him because I didn’twant to miss anything hedid,” she recalled. Candidmoments were captured andLipsey says a new passionwas born.
Last year the local mom,who now has a one-year-olddaughter Adeline and step-daughter Sidney, age 11,unofficially began shootingportrait sessions and eventsfor family and friends. Shecharged a minimal fee and
dove into the photographyprogram at Lansing Commu-nity College.
The hobby took on newmeaning — and this year sheofficially opened AmandaMarie Photography. The on-location photography busi-ness will capture 12weddings by the end of thisyear. Lipsey also takes fam-ily and children’s portraits.
“It’s the only thing I cansee myself doing,” she ad-mits. And readers of theCharlotte Shopping Guideseem to agree, naming Lipseytheir “Favorite Photogra-pher” in the People’s ChoiceAwards.
Lipsey was “shocked”
when she heard about theaward but excited.
“I’m constantly seeingthings and thinking, ‘Oh, thatwould be a great picture.’ Ev-erywhere I go I have an imag-inary view finder for greatphotos.”
For Lipsey that usuallymeans shooting personal andcandid photos of her sub-jects. “I don’t like to poseanybody,” she said. “My pho-tography is very simple. Ikind of wait for them to fallinto place. I kind of just sitand wait.”
And her favorite subjects?Lipsey said children inspireher and often are at the cen-ter of the best photos.
“I think it’s because I’m amom,” she explained. “I takepictures of children the wayI would take pictures of mykids.” And she admits thather love for photography hasbeen fostered thanks to herown children, who were sub-jects long before she startedworking professionally.
In the future Lipsey saidshe hopes to keep thebusiness local. “My heartis between Charlotte andPotterville. That’s where Iwant to stay.”
She also wants a store-front in downtown Charlotte- although her next invest-ment will be a new cameralens.
“It’s over $2,000,” saidLipsey. “It’s a very expensivebusiness.”

EATON RAPIDS - Eaton Rapids MedicalCenter has been working hard to strike theperfect balance between a familiar, home-town feel and a patient’s desire for privacyin a hospital setting.
The effort seems to be paying off in atleast one respect – the hospital was namedFavorite Hospital in this year’s People’sChoice poll by readers of the Eaton Rap-ids Community News.
“Since 2000 we’ve made great strides,”says Lindsay Stevenson, director of mar-keting and development at the medicalcenter.
No doubt many Eaton Rapids residentshave used -- and been impressed by -- theexpanded and upgraded emergency roomthat opened last year.
The new facility includes 10 private pa-tient rooms with bedside registration and24-hour X-ray, lab and respiratory services.“The new rooms are extremely comfort-able and there’s definitely a shorter waittime than (an emergency room) in the Lan-sing area,” Stevenson says.
New this year is a bigger lab that fea-
tures two private drawing rooms and aseparate waiting area. “We’re trying to en-sure patient confidentiality and comfort,”says Stevenson. “On the other hand, it’sgreat to come here because chances areyou will know someone who’s taking careof your family member. It’s just more per-sonalized.”
The medical center employs a staff ofabout 200 and has been a part of EatonRapids since 1957.
Doctors from the Lansing and Jacksonareas routinely visit the hospital’s special-ty clinics for everything from surgery tocardiology to orthopedics. Specialty clinicrooms also have been upgraded, Steven-son says.
Another major feature the hospital hasadded since 2000 is the HealthWorks fit-ness center. It’s located on the second floor

EATON RAPIDS - Owner TimPopoff credits his experiencedkitchen staff with making Riv-er’s Bend Mesquite Grill a bighit with local diners for sixyears.
Readers of the Eaton Rap-ids Community News gaveit this year’s People’s Choiceaward for Favorite Breakfastand Brunch. The casual diningrestaurant, which sits at a bendin the Grand River in Eaton Rap-ids, features four chefs: BobbySanne, John Jones, Terry Han-son and (CQ) Ronn Engel.
Their combined experienceincludes a restaurant owner, banquet manager and chefs atrestaurants in Lansing,East Lansing and Jackson.Manager Matt Crandell also hasextensive experience in finedining establishments. “I guesshard times have been to ouradvantage as far as the help,”Popoff admits. Maybe the fourhave found a home for nowwith the success of River’s
Bend, which also offers off-sitecatering.
The restaurant, 145 N. MainSt., also has a banquet roomthat seats 50, and full-servicedining on the patio overlookingthe river.
Popoff describes his res-taurant as a family-orientedplace that also likes to dabblein slightly fancier fare withits monthly specials. The Junespecials, which run Thursdaythrough Sunda, feature a grilledCajun duck breast, a meatballcalzone, beef fajitas and ashrimp penne.
“I think a lot of people comein to see the new specials,”Popoff says.
They’re still also coming forthe restaurant’s award-winningbreakfast served daily, and thereader-favorite brunch on Sat-urday and Sunday. In additionto the usual brunch items ofeggs, breakfast meat, Frenchtoast and fruit, there’s home-made donuts, and on Sundaysan omelet station and wafflesmade to order.

EATON RAPIDS — PaulMalewski is not only the topcop in the Eaton Rapids PoliceDepartment, he’s also tops withthe residents of Eaton Rapids asthis year’s People’s Choice Fa-vorite Police Officer.
After over 30 years as a po-lice officer and almost sevenas Chief of Police in Eaton Rap-ids, Malewski, 51, is able to ac-cept graciously the accoladesand the arrows that come withhis position.
He is quick to cite the pro-fessionalism of his staff, whichincludes 10 full-time police of-ficers and an administrative as-sistant. He credits them withhelping the department earn a68 percent solved-rate for allcrimes committed in the com-munity in 2008, the last year forwhich state statistics are avail-able.
A native of East Dearborn,Malewski moved to Eaton Rap-ids when the city formed it firstfull-time police force in 1981.
Since then, in addition tothe responsibilities of a policeofficer and then police chief,Malewski has helped the depart-ment build a highly visible pres-ence in Eaton Rapids outside oftheir normal duties.
There’s the Fill a Cop Carevent every December to ben-efit local food banks that nowincludes 13 area police depart-ments.
Shop with a Cop has becomeanother Eaton Rapids PoliceDepartment holiday tradition.
One of the city’s communitygardens is located at the PublicSafety Center, and for the pastfive years the police departmenthas helped award a scholarshipto a graduating high school se-nior interested in a career inlaw enforcement, firefighting oremergency medicine.
About four years ago thedepartment began teaming upwith the Heart and Hands foodbank and started a program thatallows people on probation todonate food items in lieu of pay-ments they’re required to make
as part of their sentence.“A lot of folks are doing
that and feeling good about it.They‘re complying with theirprobation and helping otherpeople. It’s a way for them toredeem themselves from someof their poor choices,” Malewskisays.
And if you like coffee, andyou have a grievance to air butyou’d rather discuss it in aninformal setting, then come toCoffee with a Cop from 8 a.m.to 9 a.m. on the last Friday ofthe month at the Evelyn Bay
Coffee Company. The job of a police chief in-
cludes lots of paperwork andbureaucracy, which is whyMalewski says he’s so fortunatehis department has found somany ways to connect with theEaton Rapids community.

EATON RAPIDS - The English Inn in Ea-ton Rapids has added another feather to itsimpressive cap with its recent membershipin the Distinguished Restaurants of NorthAmerica (DiRoNA).
And it has once again won a People’sChoice award, this time for Most RomanticPlace, Favorite Conference Center and Din-ner from the readers of the Eaton RapidsCommunity News.
DiRoNA is a not-for-profit group thatpromotes excellence in dining throughoutNorth America. Establishments that applyfor membership to DiRoNA are visited bymystery diners who rate the place on ev-erything from ambience, to cuisine, to thewine list, to quality of service.
“It’s a pretty big deal in the industry andwe are the only DiRoNA restaurant in thegreater Lansing area,” says Gary Nelson, who along with his wife Donna, own andoperate The English Inn.
Locals have been drawn to the 15-acreestate with its manicured gardens and his-toric house since it was renovated in 1989and opened to the public as an inn, res-taurant and conference center. In 2003 a
10,000-square-foot banquet facility was add-ed that features a ballroom and seating forover 200.
“We also do conferences and meetingsin the banquet facility; everything from verysmall groups to a couple of hundred and ev-erything in between,” Nelson says.
For a complete listing of amenities andservices offered at The English Inn visit itswebsite at www.english inn.com.
The slumping economy has been littlemore than “a hiccup” for his establishment,Nelson says.
“We’re busy the entire year. This is agreat place for a romantic getaway any timeof the year. Right now the gardens are infull bloom and this is a great place to havedinner and walk the gardens.”
If anything, a tighter economy may beprompting area residents to stay closer tohome and try a destination spot such as TheEnglish Inn for a special meal or weekendaway.
Nelson admits that “we continue to striveto be that special occasion restaurant andwe love having the opportunity to share inthose special times. Usually when peoplecome here it’s more than a dining experi-ence, it’s a celebration of some type.”
English Inn still beloved local spotBy CHRISTINE MEYER
Most Romantic Place, Favorite Conference Center and Dinner
As described on www.englishinn.com “Occasionally, when you may least expectit, you come across a spot in the world where time seems to have stood still, where graciousness of spirit and personal attention to detail still thrive, wherethe hustle and bustle of the modern world are shut and the lingering taste of agood Burgundy on your palate is all that matters. The English Inn is just such aplace.”

Deb, Tom, Tammi and MarkWe deeply appreciate being voted best for Health/Organic Foods, by thepeople’s choice. It lets us know that all of our hard work and extensive traininghas paid off. We pride ourselves on giving very comprehensive service andin most cases it’s one-on-one, but we also have nutritional classes availableseveral times a year. We believe, that one of the reasons we may havebeen picked, is because we make a difference in people’s lives, when theycome to us. The majority of them don’t understand that most of their healthproblems are directly linked to their food choices. We help them to makebetter food choices, add some supplements and it’s amazing what happens! Most of our clients (in 6-12 months) are off all of their Rx medications, usually ranging from 7 to 20 prescriptions. Now, we have over 1,300 type-2 diabetics, completely off their insulin by using diet alone. Once again, weappreciate and “Thank-you” for the award.

HOLT — Family VideoManager Shannon Berlinwas glad to hear her storehad won the Holt Commu-nity News’ People’s ChoiceAward for “Best Video Rent-al Store.”
Berlin said it wouldn’thave happened without
her staff.“We have a great group
of people,” she said. “Mostof them are from right herein Holt so it helps to have afamiliar face.”
The store has opened it-self up to the communityby doing community-basedthings, like hosting a childsafety day with the policedepartment, or helping out
with the Holt Food Bank.“It was great helping
out,” Berling said. “This is anice community.”
A poster on the wall atthe video store keeps trackof how many free rentalswere given out because ofthe store’s good grades pro-gram.
If students bring in re-port cards with A’s they get
a free rental. The goal is$1,500 this year.
Berlin said Family Vid-eo has remained steady de-spite competition, like thenew vending machine-stylevideo rental machines.
“I think that customerslike the fact that they cantalk to a person about mov-ies,” she said. “Especiallyif there is something that
doesn’t work.”During this interview,
Berlin dealt with a custom-er that was furious her copyof “Twister” was scratched.
“Why don’t you guyshave more than just onecopy?” the customer said.“You used to have hun-dreds.”

It has been servinglocal customers eversince.
Of course, art is ondisplay and for sale atWheaton’s. There areannual art shows, too, with the latest onefeaturing Mason artistShirley Renwick.
However, Wheaton’sspecializes in framing, matting, shadowboxesand other ways ofshowing off art.
Owner Bernie Campsaid picking out theproper matting colors ischallenging because it
makes him “expand onpeople’s thoughts.”
However, framingpatrons’ artwork alsoallows him to see a largevariety of things.
“You get to see thehistory of people’sfamilies and what not,”Camp said.
Camp also pointed outthat the framingmaterials, which includethe glass and backing, aremade in the U.S.A.
“You can get a wholeframe made entirely ofAmerican products,” hesaid.
Wheaton’s also usesrenewable “green”materials for framingfrom “reforested” trees.
