A new mission: Peninsula Health family workers Elsha Young and Paul Parker will help local familiesdealing with youth violence at home. Picture: Wayne Hawkins

Tackling family teen violenceBY ALECIA PINNER

THE rising number of violent adolescentsattacking their parents or siblings will betackled in an Australian-first pilot programwhich could be expanded across the state.

Peninsula Health’s Keeping Families SafeFrankston and Mornington Peninsula pro-gram, which just started, is based on the sim-ilar Step Up program in Seattle.

Peninsula Drug and Alcohol Program man-ager of of youth services Jo Howard wasinspired to create a similar resource tailored toAustralian families after visiting America tolearn about Step Up.

‘‘I was really convinced of the value of thatprogram and the need for a similar program inAustralia. There has not been a specific adoles-cent violence program funded in Australiabefore,’’ she said.

In 2010-11, Frankston police received morethan 100 calls from families needing help withviolent adolescents and Ms Howard said a sim-ilar number of call were made to police on theMornington Peninsula. Ms Howard said thepilot, funded through $750,000 from the stategovernment’s Department of Human Services, would target local families with 12-18 yearolds who were abusive or violent at home.

The program would include intensive casemanagement, family therapy and workingclosely with schools and drug and youth ser-vices for the benefit of the adolescent.

Additionally, there would be an eight-weekgroup program involving parents and adoles-cents to rebuild family relationships andempower the young person to manage theirbehaviour through learnt skills.

Mothers and fathers would have a chance toenhance their parenting skills, Ms Howardsaid.

‘‘We know adolescent violence is higher inoutlying suburbs and in regional Victoria andthe peak age for this kind of violence isbetween 15 and 17.

‘‘That is the most common age for the policeto be called.’’

Adolescent violence often led to violence in

adult relationships and the program aimed toprevent this from happening, Ms Howard said.

‘‘We will be working with adolescents tosupport them to change their behaviour andattitude.’’

In 75 per cent of all cases of adolescentviolence in the home, the mother was the vic-tim and 70 per cent of the time the behaviourwas committed by a male adolescent.

‘‘Female adolescents also use violence

against mothers and fathers,’’ Ms Howardsaid. In 2006, Victoria Police responded to2154 calls about adolescent perpetrated familyviolence and the number of calls had almostdoubled by the previous financial year to 4017.

The three-year pilot could be rolled out tothe rest of the state if successful and LilyAnderson of Step Up will be in Melbourne nextweek for an international conference organisedby Peninsula Health.

Anyone else see this UFO?I just came across this amazing UFO image (pic-tured) among some photos I took at the FrankstonSand Sculptures exhibition when I visited with rel-atives on December 30.

I took two images in quick succession on myiPhone, and it only appears in one. It has not been

altered by me in any way. I’m amazed how muchlike a flying saucer it is.

I wonder if anyone else has come across it in theirphotos as well.

I live in Sydney and was just visiting, so not sureif anyone else down there has seen it in their pho-tos.

Suzie Watt (via email)

Paradise lostI drove along Peninsula Link on Australia Day andwas absolutely appalled — and not only at theextraordinary effort that must have gone into thedecoration of rust coloured walls, lime greenpainted in blocks retaining walls and the blue plas-tic guard rails that lined the section from Thomp-sons Road to Cranbourne Road, Karingal. Not aliving tree in sight, just an eyesore sculpture of atree.

This government should be made answerable tothe Environment Protection Authority for allowingthis to happen.

Re: Please explainDoris Campbell of Rosebud asked for an explana-

tion about the state government funding priorities(Your Voice 13/2/13). The state Government hasactually increased funding for important servicessuch as health despite the hard economic condi-tions.

The only cut to health funding is by the federalgovernment which is affecting all health networksin Victoria and all the other states.

Re: Balnarring ‘peaceful street’ detourI am a special development bus driver who picks upand drops off four children, one in a wheelchair at ahouse at the roundabout on the corner of Stationand Halsey streets and I find this idea silly and dan-gerous for our special development children whoseparents’ cars are parked on either side of StationStreet before and after school.

We also have a wheelchair taxi picking up anddropping off and Station Street it is not wideenough to have a large-bus taxi and parent cars andthe heavy traffic.

Get your head out the sand and talk to me, Ted,and come and see for yourself what added trafficwould mean.

Swamp walker sets outto ‘make a statement’

Precious ecosystem: Jessica Durrant prepares for her walk of the Tootgarook swamp.Picture: Samantha Robin

BY SAMANTHA ROBIN ‘It is vital we preservethe wetlands. It is whatmakes this countryso special.’ — Jessica Durrant

JESSICA Durrant is taking a bravestep forward in protecting thediverse ecosystem of the Tootgarookswamp.

She will start a 10-day walk todayto raise money and awareness of theswamp.

The Rosebud resident plans towalk around the perimeter of theswamp for 10 hours a day for 10days to bring attention to the need toprotect the swamp from develop-ment.

‘‘I wanted to do something to pro-mote the cause,’’ Ms Durrant said.

‘‘I’ve got the energy and the timeand I want to do something to makea difference.’’

The enthusiastic environmentalistsaid she had always loved nature.

‘‘When I was a kid, I didn’t want apuppy, I wanted a pet snake.’’

Ms Durrant said the walk wasabout making a statement.

‘‘If you are going to promotesomething, you’ve got to think out-side the square. We need to protectthe wetlands for future generations.’’

So far she has raised almost $600and has set a goal of $10,000.

‘‘It’s a lot but if it was easy, itwouldn’t be a challenge,’’ she said.

All money raised through thewalk will be put back into regenerat-ing the wetlands, and possibly gotowards a RAMSAR nomination.

The Ramsar Convention is aninternational body, which is seen as

the primary means for conservingwetlands of international signific-ance. Designation as a Ramsar sitewould raise the profile of the Toot-garook swamp, as well as enhanceopportunities for the long-termmanagement and increased legislat-ive protection of the wetlands.

Ms Durrant said it was a constantbattle to protect the wetlands fromdevelopers and her focus was ensur-ing the wetland was preserved.

‘‘We have to save every little bitwe can. That is the message we needto send to the whole of Australia, that it is vital we preserve the wet-lands. It is what makes this countryso special.’’

An ‘emergency’ logjam

Patience needed: Ambulances line up atFrankston Hospital on February 8.

Picture: Lee Opitz

BY LEE OPITZ

FRANKSTON Hospital’s emergencydepartment came under enormouspressure this month as ambulanceslined up to offload patients.

Ten ambulances were reportedlywaiting outside the department lastWednesday. At 5.45pm last Fridayweek there were 12 ambulances, twopatient transport vehicles and a singleresponder unit.

Hospital spokesman John Jukessaid the delay in getting ambulancepatients admitted was ‘‘unusual’’ anddue to a higher than normal numberof heat-related presentations.

Mr Jukes said calling a bypass toredirect ambulances to another hos-pital was not about patient numbersbut the acuity (severity of condition)of the patients.

‘‘In the closing days of last week[February 8] acuity was high and con-siderable resources were required todeal with the most severe cases,’’ Mr-Jukes said.

Ambulance Employees Australia

general secretary Steve McGhie estim-ated that having 15 vehicles off theroad represented about 70 per cent ofambulances serving the Frankstonand Mornington Peninsula region.

‘‘The obvious answer is more bedsin hospitals,’’ Mr McGhie said.

‘‘While ambulances are off the roadthey have to be pulled from some-where else and that all takes time. It is

pure luck that no one has died becauseof this and the minute someone does, Iwill be out there shouting.

‘‘We have to keep up the pressureand get governments to do something. They are putting politics beforepatients’ lives.’’

Ambulance Victoria acting groupmanager Danielle North saidthe service was aware of the frustra-tions.

“We are trialling a number ofoptions within our communicationscentre to reduce the time paramedicsspend at hospital,’’ she said.

“These initiatives are working, andwe’ve seen on average a 17-minuteimprovement per case in the time ittakes to transfer patients at FrankstonHospital since August last year.’’

Mr Jukes said the hospital’s ageingemergency department needed to beupgraded.

‘‘The age, size and design of thedepartment is core to the problem andthis will not be resolved until our new$45 million emergency departmentopens next year..’’

Department puts Safety Beachaged-care home under scrutinyA SAFETY Beach aged-care centre isunder investigation by authorities.

A Department of Health and Age-ing) spokeswoman confirmed thatCambridge Aged Care — which oper-ates several aged-care centres includ-ing the Mt Martha Valley Lodge —was under investigation by the depart-ment and the Australian FederalPolice. She did not specify what orwho was under investigation.

The DHA spokeswoman said thedepartment had serious concernsabout the conduct and quality of careprovided by the Cambridge group andhas been closely monitoring the organ-isation for ‘‘some time’’.

‘‘The department monitorsapproved providers’ compliance withtheir responsibilities in relation to thequality of care they provide to resid-ents, protecting residents’ user rights(including prudential responsibilityfor any accommodation bonds) andaccountability, including record keep-ing,’’ she said.

The spokeswoman said theAged Care Standards and Accredita-

tion Agency had undertaken a heigh-tened level of monitoring ofCambridge’s services over the past 12months.

The home was again audited inNovember last year, and after meetingall 44 expected outcomes in Januarythe ACSAA team recommended thatMt Martha Valley Lodge be accrediteduntil February 22, 2014.

A further sanction has been imposedprohibiting the charging of accommo-dation bonds following non-compliance of financial record keep-ing. This would expire on June 11, theDHA spokeswoman said.

Cambridge Aged Care directorStephen Snowden has been quoted asstrongly denying allegations of finan-cial irregularities raised in the metro-politan media last week.

A spokesman for Cambridge AgedCare told the Weekly that the com-pany would not comment on the alleg-ations and that lawyers wereinvestigating whether a case fordefamation could be launched.

Welcome addition: Col Strawbridge, his wifePatricia and sons Charlie, 5, and Joshua, 6, joinDavid Morris and Denis Napthine with the newrescue boat. Picture: Lee Optiz

THE 30 volunteers at Victorian MarineRescue (VMR) Mornington will soon beusing a new state of the art vessel courtesy ofa $210,000 State Government grant.

Ports Minister Denis Napthine and Morn-ington MP David Morris visited the squad’sheadquarters to make the announcement.

The group’s current leading search andrescue vessel Darbyshire 11 will be sold andproceeds added to the $210,000 to purchasea new Noosa Cat 3000 series.

VMR Mornington president Col Straw-bridge said the boat would be a welcomeaddition to the 24-hour rescue unit.

‘‘The group started in 1980 as a result of atragic boating incident when a local mandied and the local police insisted a ready-action unit be established,’’ he said.

‘‘In the 1990s, we’d average about 60 callouts a year. In the past financial year it wasup to 197, which rivals, if not exceeds, CFAcall outs. And this year looks like anotherrecord-breaking year.’’

Dr Napthine said it was critical to main-tain safety on Victorian waterways.

‘‘Recreational boating is one of Morning-ton’s many attractions and it is critical wesupport groups like VMR Mornington to

improve the safety for recreational boaters inour region.’’

The funding was made available throughthe government’s boating safety and facilitiesprogram, under which $600,000 has beenprovided to Parks Victoria to clearly defineboating and swimming zones between MtMartha and Elwood.

Another $10,000 in funding has beenprovided for water safety training at Morn-ington and Daveys Bay yacht clubs and 2ndMornington Sea Scouts.

MOOROODUC property owners saythe people behind a proposal to con-struct a cattery and kennel for 100 dogsare barking up the wrong tree if theythink they have their support.

Notice of a proposal for a new busi-ness called Bark Avenue, a 100-placeboarding kennel and cattery, was postedat the eight-hectare property at 281Bungower Road in October.

There are already two catteries and aboarding kennel in the area, as well as anegg farm next door.

Neighbouring resident Bob Phillipssaid there were 10 properties within 500metres of the proposed kennels. Thecouncil has received 15 objections to theapplication.

‘‘We all moved here because of thepeace and quiet and this will be tooclose. It will certainly disturb the amen-ity of the neighbourhood. We are notrampant greenies, but this is a big devel-opment and not suitable for this area.’’

Mr Phillips said objectors were alsoconcerned that the property owners,

who own Karingal Veterinary Hospital, intended to expand the business toinclude a veterinary clinic and hospital.

‘‘This is not consistent with usagesunder the green wedge management planwhich states that any development mustbe considered with ‘the need to protectthe amenity of existing residents’,’’ MrPhillips said.

Danny Caron, whose small acreagehas been sectioned off from the property, said he was concerned for the safety ofhis three young children.

‘‘Having up to 100 dogs at the back ofour property is quite scary for them. What if they get loose? We love dogs andhave two of our own. But this is not theplace for a big kennel. We weren’t con-sulted at all.’’

The noise of barking dogs andincreased traffic on Bungower Road, particularly since the opening of Penin-sula Link, would also be a problem, MrCaron said.

Mr Phillips said he had been told bycouncil officers that the planning applic-ation had ‘‘ticked all the boxes’’ and itappeared the only way the developmentcould be stopped was to have all council-lors on board.

However, attempts to arrange a meet-ing with ward councillor Lynn Bowdento discuss the matter had been unsuc-cessful, Mr Phillips said.

Neither Cr Bowden nor the applicantsresponded to the Weekly’s calls beforegoing to press.

25.4 &':?Unrest at schoolsBY DAN MOSS and LEE OPITZ

INDUSTRIAL action at schools across thestate will continue to paralyse schools aspublic teachers and the government fail tostrike a deal.

Australian Education Union spokes-woman Stephanie De Campo said about30,000 teachers across the state went onstrike.

At the Hisense Arena in Richmond about10,000 public teaching staff filled the sta-dium, and about 2000 watched screens out-side on the lawns. They voted on Thursdaynot to continue a strike but will hold rollingstoppages for half days in Coalition-heldelectorates from term two.

Mornington schools were among thoseaffected. Some kept a small number of classesopen, while others, including Balnarringprimary, closed the school for the day.

Mornington Secondary College principalSarah Burns said only year 7 studentsattended school while 60 staff took strikeaction.

‘‘We have had no complaints from parents, although I think we are all sick of how longthis is taking. We have the best interests of

students at heart, but we need to get a fairdeal for everyone. This is all about creating asystem that’s not divisive,’’ Mrs Burns said.

St Mary’s Catholic Primary School prin-cipal Richard Mucha said most of theHastings school’s staff had taken part in thestrike. The school had three classes opera-tional, half its usual capacity.

While the Catholic system’s pay structurefor teachers differs slightly from the state sys-tem, he said any wage agreements reachedwould follow on to the Catholic sector.

‘‘The first priority should always be whatis in the best interest of the students. It is vitalthat we attract terrific teachers and retainthem in the profession.

‘‘Often, we lose a lot of teachers after thefirst few years of teaching, which is why thepay structure is so important.’’

Mr Mucha said a performance-based paystructure would not offer the best outcomefor students as it encouraged teachers towork against each other.

‘‘We need a pay structure that encouragesteachers to work together to build on theirstrengths and minimise their weaknesses.

‘‘If that happens, it will be a win forstudents.’’

Colours galore onthe races catwalk

Winning look: Natasha Raleigh strikes a pose after taking out the under-40 category of the fashions onthe field. Picture: Gary Sissons

BY SANDRA BULL

THERE was a sea of colour at the MorningtonCup last Wednesday as fashionistas battled it outon the fashions on the field catwalk.

Peplum-style dresses were popular, as werebright tangerine and hot pink ensembles andflorals and prints. Buns, currently back in fash-ion, allowed colourful hats to be showcasedwhile other contenders wore sleek ponytails.

The men mainly sported suits and hats, with asplash of colour being provided by ties and bow-ties and the occasional flower tucked in the lapel.

The 40-plus category was won by Vicki Petko-ski of Kensington who proved to be the bestadvertisement for her own design. The founderof Vezzano Couture wore a spearmint greendress with lace side panels, accented with tanger-ine shoes and bag. Her domed pillbox hat, in thesame fabric, was a collaboration with popularpeninsula milliner Annette Sanfilippo.

Ms Petkoski said she started her design com-pany, which specialises in race wear, two yearsago and would love to establish an outlet on the

peninsula. ‘‘I love to come to country races, especially one this large,’’ she said.

Natasha Raleigh of Wattle Glen took out theunder-40 category with a fresh floral look toppedoff by a hot pink and red hat.

‘‘I’m still in shock,’’ she said, after being namedthe winner of more than $20,000 worth ofprizes. She wore a dress from Mornington’sBettie’s Boutique which stocks frocks with a retrovibe.

The winner of the marvellous millinerysection, Zorza Goodman of Richmond, was soexcited by her victory she accidentally swallowedpart of her tongue piercing. Ms Goodman,a milliner, created a hand-painted hat in black, yellow and hot pink which perfectly matched theeye-catching colours of her floral frock.

She said as a plus-sized woman, she picked adress first with a perfect fit, before crafting amatching hat which took more than 40 hours tocomplete.

It was up to Rodney Paterson of Mt Martha tobring a local winning touch to the fashion field.Mr Paterson, wearing a Ted Baker suit and natty

blue and white striped Urbanna shirt, won thestylish gentlemen’s section.

He said entered for ‘‘a bit of a laugh’’. ‘‘A mateand I competed against each other,’’ he said.

High-profile Melbourne milliner Peter Jago, one of three judges, said the standard of entrieswas even higher this year. ‘‘You can seethe influence of the merger with Caulfield. I

think the standard today was exceptional.’’Mr Jago, who created and wore with aplomb

an exotic sequinned hat featuring a miniaturepeacock, was so impressed with Ms Goodman’smillinery creations he presented her with a signedfan he had been using to beat the heat.

Clydesdales a barrel of funCarlton and United Brewery’s famous Clydesdales recently visited Kirk’s Hotel in Mornington to the

delight of patrons and locals. Renowned for their beauty and strength, the horses have been associated

with CUB since 1864. Although they were replaced by motorised trucks just after World War II, they can

still be seen pulling wagons laden with barrels of ale for promotional visits. The Scottish breed is

recognised for its distinctive characteristics and gentle disposition, and have become known as the

breed that built Australia. The average lifespan for the massive yet gentle horses is 25-30 years. It takes

45 centimetres of steel to make each horseshoe, which has to be replaced every five to six weeks.

When you fi rst walk into McClelland College, you may be forgiven for mistaking it for a private school. Our facilities are modern, spacious and fi rst-class, and our students are courteous and well-presented. You may be surprised to learn we are in fact a government school, proving that great education does not have to come at great cost.Of course, looks aren’t everything. It’s our approach to teaching that sets us apart – and we have the results to prove it. Last year, at VCE level, we achieved an average Study Score of 30 (the same as Frankston High School!), which is an outstanding result, given that our total student population is smaller than comparative schools in the area. The passion that drives our dynamic team is our dedication to a personalised learning approach, including open learning centres and genuinely tailoring education to meet student needs.I am proud to be the Acting Principal at such a school. We do things differently and we have the results to prove it.Visit us and fi nd out for yourself!

On the road with muscle massagesA country music icon is returning to the peninsula,Haydn Godony reports.

Country road: Troy Cassar-Daley with a classic EH Holden.

After Troy Cassar-Daley gives his voice aworkout he sometimes grants his voice boxa massage.

‘‘As you get older you can’t do the things youused to. When I’m on the road I try to be a bitmore responsible with my health,’’ the popularcountry music performer said from his BrisbaneRiver home.

‘‘I go for a run, I’ve been doing that for years. Iget some physio for my creaky knees and thesame bloke specialises in massage for voicemuscles. It’s leading edge experimental but I dothat as well — anything to help the voice.’’

Cassar-Daley said he was lucky to avoid therecent flooding, which struck while he was pick-ing up four golden guitar awards in Tamworth.

Cassar-Daley recalls playing at the formerFrankston guitar festival. “I [also] did one showon the peninsula years ago when I was heading tocatch the ferry to the Queenscliff music festival. Idrove down the Moorooduc Highway and Iplayed some little venue just on the highway

there,” Cassar-Daley said of the now long-lostPeninsula Lounge.

“I’m glad I’m coming back and look at thecompany I’m with. We all grew up with theHoodoo Gurus, Split Enz and Aussie Crawl.’’

Cassar-Daley’s Moorooduc performance onSaturday will feature songs from his 11th album,Home, along with shout-out hits and showstoppers such as People Get Ready.

Home features all new songs.Cassar-Daley said that after being in the coun-

try music scene for so long, he had been accordedelder statesman status.

‘‘I’ve treated this with respect and in return I’vegot to appreciate the longevity. The fact thatpeople pay for you to play your songs, I don’tthink there’s a better job in the world.’’

Cassar-Daley will perform at the Betweenthe Bays Festival this Saturday at Penbankschool in Moorooduc. Details:betweenthebays.com.

FEATURESTORY

It’s taboo ... but be honestThe stereotype of the hardy Aussiebloke has been wrapped in a flag, drenched in beer and thrown onthe barbie by popular culture.Meanwhile, the number of menreporting depression is rising.ALECIA PINNER finds out whatmen really think about it.

Boy talk: Kim Farrant is determined to help men open up. Picture: Gary Sissons

‘A lot of research suggestsmen are living in isolationand are four times morelikely to commit suicidethan women. A man inAustralia commits suicideevery 11 hours.’ — Kim FarrantAFL footballer Harry O’Brien is grateful he

told his stepfather he loved him before theman who raised him took his own life.

Author and veteran Barry Heard recalls heturned from ‘‘naive man to an animal’’ when helost his virginity during the Vietnam War andcomedian John Fleming was humiliated at schoolwhen his classmates called him ‘‘tits’’.

Actor Nicholas Brien spent days behind drawncurtains, crippled by anxiety attacks. TherapistJared Osborne’s ex-girlfriend criticised himconstantly because he wasn’t enough of a man.

These personal accounts were related recentlyat What Men Really Think About, a series ofevents in Melbourne. From next month,Frankston and Mornington Peninsula males willget the chance to attend similar forums at theFrankston Arts Centre.

Stories like these are not generally shared bypublic figures, as they challenge the widelyaccepted view of what it means to be masculine— to have stoic, unwavering confidence.

In a country with its short history tied up inpioneering, war, working the land and bigbusiness, the ‘‘real men don’t cry’’ image hasmade sharing some topics a taboo for men.

Adding to the internal conflict, it seems menare also expected to live up to the unattainableimage of modern man. SNAGs (Sensitive NewAged Guys), also known as metrosexuals, areemotionally sensitive while looking good andknowing how to please a woman.

This male identity crisis of living up towomen’s expectations while battling long-heldstereotypes can lead to depression, anxiety, substance abuse, relationship breakdown andsuicide, says filmmaker Kim Farrant.

Inspired by her brothers, who suffered fromdepression, Farrant created the What Men ReallyThink About forums, which were well-attendedat the Wheelers Centre in Melbourne.

‘‘It seems like we live in a culture with apredominantly post-war influence, where realmen don’t cry or show their feelings . . . andwomen are demanding they do speak up.Pressure can come from outside but can also bereinforced by voices within,’’ she says.

‘‘A lot of research suggests men are living inisolation and are four times more likely tocommit suicide than women. A man in Australiacommits suicide every 11 hours.’’

Farrant felt she could contribute to socialchange by introducing men to ‘‘emotionallyarticulate role models’’ in a safe environment.

‘‘One of the experiences I’ve had men talkabout is the need for more emotional foreplay totrust because if you show feelings you’re not a

real man. They need to know there won’t bejudgment or ridicule. Safety is so crucial toforming relationships.

‘‘My hope, inspiration and aim is seeing menup on that stage in front of 300 people, talkingabout things we’ve been conditioned to believeare only acceptable to show a partner.

‘‘If we can get one man out of his small safetynet, to confide in a friend, girlfriend, sibling orparent, hopefully we can reduce the depressionand suicide rate.

‘‘What’s been so interesting is men are learningthey’re not alone, there’s another way out and ifyou talk about what’s going on, it can shift themood.’’

Speakers and audience members betweenthe ages of 20-70 had been involved in theworkshops.

Farrant says the forums are perfectly tailoredfor our community. ‘‘Frankston Council is opento intellectual debate and there are a lot of issuesin Frankston. People are struggling withdomestic violence and addiction issues that often

aren’t dealt with in a safe, nurturing environ-ment. The most important thing is fosteringhonest expression.’’

The Frankston forums will explore father-hood, masculinity and relationships. Speakerswill include former AFL footballer and co-founder of White Lion, Glenn Manton, Choir ofHard Knocks co-founder David O’Halloran andcomedian and Scared Weird Little Guys per-former John Fleming.

Fleming told the Weekly he was inspired totake part in the forums for self development andto help improve the mental health of other men.

At the Wheelers Centre, he spoke about hisbody image and connected with audience mem-bers who felt the same way.

‘‘It is very personal and I delved deeper intothat story than I had before. I hadn’t expressed itpublicly; it was very cathartic. I felt quitevulnerable but it was beautiful in the space ithappened. In the environment created by KimFarrant it doesn’t feel like a risk.’’

In Frankston, the father of two children, aged

seven and nine, will talk about fatherhood andhow his relationships with his children developas they do.

‘‘It’ll be about the transitions I’ve experienced, from being single, in a relationship and now witha family. I’ve been growing and developing asmuch as the kids have. If I can create any kind oftemplate or holding place for this kind of engage-ment and expression, that would be wonderful.’’

The Dads In Distress organisation runs theDad’s Den in Tyabb. Group leader Reade Smithsays similar forums in Frankston had attractedcrowds of men looking for the opportunity totalk.

Mr Smith says it is important to have an envir-onment where males are comfortable learningabout the issues other men are facing.

‘‘Dads in Distress is one of the supporters ofthose forums. They are important because theyteach men to keep an eye out for their mates. Youdon’t say toughen up or you’re a wuss.

‘‘Blokes are blokes and they’ll rib each other, but men are becoming a lot more aware that ifyou don’t listen to your mate when he reachesout for help, then he might not be around.’’

Lifeline spokesman John Mendel said theorganisation’s support line had a record numberof calls in 2012 and was expecting the number torise in 2013.

Of the 541,000 calls last year, about38 per cent were from men. Mental health, including depression, was the second-mostcommon topic men wanted to talk about, afterrelationships and family.

‘‘This is good news because they are overcom-ing the stigma associated with talking aboutmental health,’’ Mr Mendel says.

Apart from the forums, there are better placesthan the pub to take friends who are strugglingwith gambling, substance abuse, relationshipbreakdowns or simply the pressures of life, MrSmith says.

‘‘Take them to the coffee shop, get a pizza, sitthem down and say: how are things going? Thatis what mates are supposed to be about. Don’tenable your friends to hurt themselves.’’

A series of What Men Really Think About for-ums are being held at the Frankston Arts Centrefrom next month. Tickets cost $5. To book, call9784 1060 or visit thefac.com.au. Support and alist of local resource centres for men are availableat dadsindistress.asn.au.

If you or someone you know is experiencing anemotional crisis, call Lifeline, 13 11 14.

Blonde apopularwinnerMORNINGTON trainer Mark Rileyalways believed Jolie Blonde wouldwin a decent race.

The four-year-old mare delivered inthe $120,000 Listed Hareeba Stakes(1200m) on Wednesday with a blister-ing victory on her home track.

Jolie Blonde beat home PeterSnowden’s Launay ($7) by almost alength with Mick Price’s Sheila’s Star($6) third.

The local winner was popular oncourse after she was backed from $17into $10 in the lead-up to the race.

“We’ve had trouble getting herright but she showed us that she’sright back on track and we knewtoday she was some sort of chance,”Riley said.

“They went very hard in front andit was set up for something to comehome over the top. Daniel [Stack-house] rode her an absolute treat. Hecouldn’t have ridden her any better, itwas a fantastic ride.”

Stackhouse settled Jolie Blondeclose to the tail of the field before thepairing made their move at the top ofthe straight.

With Launay and Sheila’s Starseemingly beat, Stackhouse gave JolieBlonde her head and she took off forwhat seemed an easy victory.

“It panned out perfectly withplenty of early speed and I had a beau-tiful run in behind Dwayne Dunn andhe just dragged me into the race andshe was too good in the end,” aclearly delighted Stackhouse said.

“She’s done a good job and hasshown what ability that she doeshave, which is full credit to MarkRiley and his team.”

Another local winner was PeterWhite’s Prussian Power in the$35,000 Superior Food Services Han-dicap (1000m) with Prussian Power.

The $18 shot proved too strong forRobert Smerdon’s Black Jack Boy ($6)and Stephen Brown’s Jacopo ($12).

It’s Twilight time as royal raider shines brightA SYDNEY raider took out the $250,000 InglisPremier (1200m) at Mornington last week to stampherself as one of the most promising two year olds inthe country.

The Bjorn Baker-trained Twilight Royale out-classed the nine-strong field after Stephen Theodorewas forced to withdraw favourite Crack A Roadieafter he got cast in his box.

But despite the field lacking the class of last yearwhen Snitzerland stormed to an impressive victory,Twilight Royale showed she has a bright future.

The victory takes her record to two wins andtwo seconds from four starts and boosts her

total prizemoney to more than $350,000.Baker, who only began training by himself 18

months ago, said the victory was all about the con-nections who had taken a punt on an untried trainer.

“I have to thank the owners. I didn’t have toomany horses when I bought this filly and not toomany owners to get into a horse so I’m very gratefuland it’s worked out super,” he said.

“We’ll just see how she comes through todaybefore we work out any immediate plans for herfuture.”

Jockey Brenton Avdullah guided the $1.95favourite towards the tail of the field before opening

her up with about 600m to go. Twilight Royale blewaway Mick Price pair Resistant ($3.60) and Lannis-ter ($8) with Avdullah paying tribute to his mount.

“She’s probably just blundered the start at herpast two which hasn’t helped her,” he said.

“Today she left the gates as good as she can andthere was a good bit of tempo on early so I just kepther out of trouble and rode her like the best horse inthe race.

“It was a race that looked like it was lacking a bitof depth and I thought that if she brought her bestform from Sydney then she’d be winning.”

Tuscan Fire blazes to cup winBY BRAD McGRATH

Jumps to glory: TuscanFire, ridden by GlenBoss, won the $350,000Listed Mornington Cup(2400m) in gloriousconditions onWednesday. Boss wasfined $1000 by stewardsfor ‘celebrating’ beforecrossing thefinishing line.Picture: Gary Sissons

FORMER jumper Tuscan Fire has booked his placein the Caulfield Cup after storming to victory in the$350,000 Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) lastWednesday.

The Dan O’Sullivan-trained six year old overcamea quality field and an eventful race after Titch threwLinda Meech off his back just out of the barriers.

O’Sullivan, who is from Ballarat, said he had asneaking suspicion Tuscan Fire was good enough toclaim Mornington’s biggest race.

You would think O’Sullivan would shelve plans torace Tuscan Fire over the jumps again with the winearning automatic qualification into the CaulfieldCup, but he pointed to other horses who have mixedflat and jumps racing.

“You couldn’t have believed that it would workout like that and that he’d get the run that he did,”O’Sullivan said.

“Going back a long while ago I had this plan but Iwasn’t game to say it because people would think Iwas overrating the horse.

“We’ve won this today and he’s still got a coupleof runs left in him. We’ll just enjoy the momenttoday. The jumping is still there if we want it.Remember Vintage Crop was a jumper.”

Tuscan Fire ($6) was given the perfect run bychampion jockey Glen Boss as he settled her justbehind the leaders early.

Boss expertly guided Tuscan Fire into the clear onthe home straight before asking the gutsy gelding formore. The response was staggering as he breezedaway to win by almost three lengths.

Mornington trainer Pat Carey’s Durnford ($4.80)was second and Peter Moody’s Macedonian ($18)finished third.

“He gave me a great ride,” Boss said.“He was so relaxed in the run, especially when

there was a bit going on with that loose horse. It wasgood fun.

‘‘It’s my first Mornington Cup. This track’s been anemesis for me. I’d hate to see my strike rate here. Itwould be shocking, so to get this one for Dan O’Sull-ivan is very good. He’s turned this horse out in unbe-lievable condition every time I’ve ridden him.”

The victory has seen Tuscan Fire’s odds for theCaulfield Cup plummet from $81 to $34 given he islikely to attract just 51.5kg.

O’Sullivan is now likely to set Tuscan Fire for the3200m Adelaide Cup on March 11.

The Mounties (sixth) and CribPoint (fifth) are in a logjam with Pen-insula Old Boys (fourth) and Mt Mar-tha (seventh) who are all desperatelyfighting for a place in the finals.

Mt Eliza had a torrid start to theinnings but was able to make 175against a fellow finals contender.

Mounties openers Shane Speedie (4)and Scott Tansley (0) did not have animpact, with coach Jason Mathersalso falling for a duck.

Mt Eliza captain Lyle House curbedthe early slide with 22 before he wascaught off a Luke Herrington delivery, the Mounties finding themselves at adangerous 4-45.

‘‘[Luke] Herrington really troubledus early,’’ House said.

‘‘Their bowlers really dictated thegame at the start.’’

Crib Point all-rounder and captainHerrington was unstoppable early

with his three scalps of Mathers,Speedie and House. With the Moun-ties top order collapsing, the middleorder rose to the occasion led by all-

rounder Justin Grant (32) who helpedreignite their innings. ‘‘Consideringthe start we had I am happy with howthe innings finished,’’ House said. ‘‘We

are still well and truly in the game.’’Matt O’Brien (33), Ben Tracy (24)

and the ever-consistent Lloyd Gourel-de-Saint-Pern (33) followed the leadof Grant, breathing life back into thematch for Mt Eliza.

Career-best bowling effort rattles CarltonA FIVE-wicket haul to emerging all-rounder Chris McCormick has putFrankston Peninsula Heat in a com-manding position in a Premier Cricketclash against Carlton.

McCormick tore the heart out ofthe Blues’ batting line-up to recordcareer-best figures of 5-44 from 19overs as the Heat took advantage of abowler-friendly pitch at A H ButlerOval.

The Blues were eventually bowledout for 178 with James Miller (2-22)and Ben Ashkenazi (2-26) also amongthe wickets.

‘‘We’ve been playing really wellafter Christmas — we’ve beaten some

sides that have been low on the lad-der,’’ Miller said.

‘‘Carlton have been in the top fourthe past few years, so it was good todo well.’’

In reply, the Heat survived a tough12-over period without losing anywickets to finish Saturday’s play at0-24.

Matt Lineker (14no) and Ben Hil-lard (9no) kept the talented Carltonbowling attack out.

The Heat require 155 for victorybut Miller knows it will be no easytask.

‘‘Opening the batting at this level isalways very difficult and to do it for

12 overs at the end of a day’s play isvery tough,’’ he said.

‘‘They have got some very goodbowlers and the guys did really well.

‘‘From a Frankston point of view inthe past we might have lost a couple ofwickets in that 12-over period.’’

Miller said McCormick was gettingresults after putting in an enormousamount of work and being givenan opportunity after the retirement ofchampion paceman Darren Groves.

‘‘It’s the first time he’s done it [fivewickets] at this level,’’ Miller said.

‘‘It’s a good reward for hard workand he’s done the hard yards for theclub.

‘‘There is always the opportunitywhen a club stalwart leaves — youcan’t replace people like that. It has tobe a bit of a collective — and Chris hasstepped up and not replaced him butdone well.’’

The Heat are locked in a tense bat-tle for a finals position and desper-ately need to secure first inningspoints in the clash against Carlton, with their finals position no certainty.‘‘It’s a really tight competition at themoment,’’ Miller said.

‘‘We’ll just focus on what we needto do and I think there is only onegame between fourth and 10th on theladder.’’
