DunedinConcerned with stagnation in the late 1960s

Dunedin 1966Dunedin was in the doldrums.. A Jaycee survey identified heritage, education and tourism as key strengths. Otago Peninsula encapsulated all those attributes

In 1966 the Dunedin Jaycees (a group of entrepreneurial businessmen) met to discuss projects that could benefit the community, as well as improve the citys economic growth and image. The decision was made to initiate a project that would be a tourist attraction for Dunedin. If all the existing and potential attractions and features on the Otago Peninsula were considered together, the whole of the Peninsula was in fact the attraction. Prof Ron Lister The idea of the Otago Peninsula Trust was born! The new organisation was to be responsible for promoting and developing eco-tourism on the Otago Peninsula, protecting and enhancing its unique features. Registered in 1967 the Otago Peninsula Trust, its Board of Trustees and members, created a vision for the future which has established the Trust as an integral part of the wider Dunedin tourism market and one of New Zealands most important private charitable trusts. Through the continuing support of groups like Jaycees, Rotary, Lions, with the wider community providing voluntary labour and essential funds, the Trust has operated successfully, and to Dunedin's great benefit, for 50 years.
