Background to Pegasus
• In Castle Vale a large housing estate North of the city.
• In the last few years there has been a redevelopment of the estate.
• One form entry school.
• Many come into school with poor language skills.
Aims of Visual Literacy
• To increase enjoyment of writing.
• To see a need for writing.
• To have a willingness to write.
• To raise standards of writing in the class.
Target Group
• 6 boys from the Year 5 class.
• Mixed ability but all underachieving in writing.
• Unmotivated to write.
• Reading results much better than writing.
• Ratio 2:1 girls so left sharing ideas to girls.
Writing Perception
• Do you enjoy writing? 4 yes 1 no 1 sometimes.
• Are you a good writer? 3 no 3 sometimes.
• Anything you don’t like about writing? It hurts my hand, the amount you have to do, I can’t think of ideas.
• Not one boy had a male role model at home who wrote.
Unit 1- Narrative Myths and LegendsMulan
Mulan - Activities• Camera angles.• Settings from
pictures.• Hot seating.• Feelings• Zone of relevance.• Mythical beast.• Story plan.• Own version of
Mulan story.
Mulan - Outcomes• Taking part in discussion in group and class.• Greater use of more powerful words.• Writing a greater amount.• Keen to write.
Unit 2 - Report

• Sequencing and key points of pictures.
• Dicto gloss.• Drama – interview.• Book jacket.• Newspaper report -
ICT.• Non-chronological
report about penguins.

• Willing to take part in drama roles.• Sharing ideas and knowledge.• Greater organisation of their writing.• Enjoying their writing.
Results
• 3 boys have made 1 sub level progress.
• 3 boys have made 2 sub level progress.

When I run out of ideas, working on my own, putting in punctuation.
• The advice the children would give included taking your time and reading.

2. An increased amount of writing.
3. Progress in writing levels.
4. Willing to listen and try ways to improve their writing.
