Airman Jones was assigned to the induction center. There he advised new recruits about their government benefits, especially their GI insurance. Soon after, Captain Smith noticed that Airman Jones had almost a 100% record for insurance sales, which had never happened before. Rather than ask about this, the Captain stood in the back of the room and listened to Jones's sales pitch. Jones explained the basics of the GI Insurance to the new recruits. He told each of them, "If you have GI Insurance and go into battle and are killed, the government has to pay $200,000 to your beneficiaries. If you don't have GI insurance, and you go into battle and get killed, the government only has to pay a maximum of $6000." "Now," he concluded, "which bunch do you think they are going to send into battle first?”

An old man lived alone in Ireland. He wanted to dig his potato garden, but it was very hard work. His only son, who would have helped him, was in prison for bank robbery. The old man wrote a letter to his son and mentioned his predicament. Shortly, he received this reply: "For HEAVEN'S SAKE, Dad, don't dig up that garden. That's where I buried the money!" At 4 A.M. the next morning, a dozen policemen showed up and dug up the entire garden, without find-ing any money. Confused, the old man wrote another note to his son telling him what happened, and asking him what to do next. His son's reply was: "Now plant your potatoes, Dad. It's the best I could do from here."

“What possible excuse can you give for acquitting this defendant?,” the judge shouted at the jury. “Insanity, Your Honor,” replied the foreman. “All 12 of you?”

“Darn,” the man said to his pal while weighing himself in a drugstore. “I began this diet yesterday, but the scale says I’m heavier today. Here, Norm, hold my jacket...It still says I’m heavier...Here, hold my Twinkies.”

A man had six children and was very proud of his achievement. He was so proud of himself that for years he called his wife "Mother of Six," in spite of her objections. One night in their retirement years they go to a party. The man is ready to go home and wants to find out if his wife is ready to leave as well. He shouts at the top of his voice, "Shall we go home, Mother of Six?" His wife, irritated by her husband's lack of discretion for so many years, shouts back, "Anytime you're ready, Father of Four!"

TIMELY FEATURES

Some might say a long celebrity marriage is one that endures the duration of the newly betrothed's trip down the aisle. We've seen Britney Spears dissolve a marriage after 55 hours and Kim Kardashian call it quits after 72 days. It seems even money can't buy matrimonial happiness. But some couples have been together for 50, 60 years and say they're still as much in love as they were the day they spoke their "I dos." What do they know that others do not? According to clinical psychologist and relationship guru Dr. Phil McGraw, "We all need to be flexible and to compromise in mar-riage, but you've got to be true to your core traits and charac-teristics, what I call your authentic self." Some couples enter a relationship projecting a persona they believe the other person wants -- one that really isn't what they're all about. This could be a woman trying to fill the role of her husband's nurturing mom or a guy playing the protector to his wife. In reality, marriage is more of a partnership, and truth and trust are often at the basis of good marriages. There are many other "secrets" that marriage experts will offer to couples seeking the magic formula. Whether you're pondering mar-riage or have already tied the knot, consider the following advice to make a marriage endure for the long haul.

SECRETS TO A LONG AND HAPPY MARRIAGE

Couples who have stayed married for decades often put each other first and share a mutual respect.

• There's no such thing as the perfect marriage. Some couples create an image of what they think marriage is supposed to be, and that image that often goes "poof" once reality sets in. Even soulmates are bound to frustrate or irritate one another from time to time. • Couples should express their frustrations. Bottling up frustra-tions can eat at a person and eventually destroy a marriage. Talk-ing about the things that are bothering you with your partner opens up a discussion and can help you work through things. • Divorce should not be seen as a viable option. Couples who want to bail on the marriage at every turn could be directing their energy toward divorce as the only solution instead of discovering ways to remove the cause of strife. Divorce can sometimes be the easy way out when you think about the work that goes into keeping a marriage working. Experts say that there are a few issues, like adultery, abuse and drug/alcohol addiction, that may be reasonable catalysts for divorce if personal safety and sanity is being compro-mised. • Make time for romance. It's easily said but not so easily done. Too often married couples forget what it was like to date when all of their attention was spent on each other instead of the house, kids, work, etc. Today there seems to be even more distractions, from e-mails to texts to pressure and obligations at the office. Happy couples find the time to spend quality time with their spouses -- even if that's only 10 minutes of alone time a day. • Put "we" first. Many people operate on a "me" mentality. When you're part of a couple, give more to your spouse than you take. If he or she is doing the same, you're working collectively for the benefit of the marriage instead of yourselves. • Respect each other. Often couples having troubles realize they treat strangers better than they treat each other. Would use the in-sults or unflattering terms that you sometimes throw at your spouse with a complete stranger? Probably not. Good marriages are based on a foundation of respect and love. It's easy to lose feelings of love if the respect is gone. Couples can realize that there are some thorns that come with the roses of marriage, and staying happy together does take work for it to all be worth it.

On Sunday, February 26, 2012, comedian Eddie Murphy will host the 84th Academy Awards. Each year, motion picture industry experts nominate and cast their votes for the top films, directors, actors, and behind-the-scenes moviemakers. Academy members vote at the end of December to determine the official nominees in conten-tion. This year, nominees will be announced on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, with the polls closing on February 21. Watching the Academy Awards and seeing who will take home an Oscar has become an annual tradition in the United States and across the globe for decades. Here's a look back at the last 20 year's worth of movies that earned the Academy Award for "Best Picture."

DID YOU KNOW?

The word "winter" comes from a Proto-Germanic word "wintruz," meaning "time of water." It also may derive from the Old Dutch word, "wintar." The water reference is in reference to the snow and rain that takes place

during this time of the year in the middle and high latitudes.

Few computer users have not experi-enced the rotating hourglass icon or the spinning rainbow ball that signifies that the system is working or bogged down by something. Over time computers can collect bits of information, fragmented files and other data that might wreak havoc on the inner workings that make a computer tick. While some people are tech wizards, much of the general public is not so knowl-edgeable when it comes to understanding computer language or even moving beyond basic tasks. However, taking the time to run maintenance on the machine or asking an IT professional to assess your computer and make recommendations can improve the function of the computer and reduce stress over the slowing down or freezing of applications. Depending on the platform you use (PC or Mac), there will be certain procedures exclusive to that platform. But in general there are strategies anyone can take to clean out their computers and keep them running optimally. • Free disk space. One of the first steps is to take inventory of what you have saved on the computer and delete extraneous or unused program files and other items. De-lete optional factory-installed components that you don't use as well. Check out files that you have personally saved and get rid of old things, especially photos, videos and other data that takes up a lot of space. Temporary Internet files take up a lot of space because the browser caches each

TECH TIPS: CLEAN OUT YOUR COMPUTER TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE

steps, such as updating programs and deleting old files, to ensure their

computers are operating at full capacity.

page you visit for faster access at another time. Removing these temporary files can make your computer run more quickly. • Update software. Both Mac and PC platforms have routine updates that are rec-ommended for the operating system and the programs installed. Some software errors may be remedied by the updating of applica-tions when indicated. • Use spyware and virus protection.Visiting

the Internet opens you up to contamination by any virus or spyware software contained on that site and through downloads you may do. Protection products will locate errant files on the hard drive and notify you for deletion. • Back up files to external sources. Hav-ing your full photo and video compilation stored on your computer may be conveni-ent, but what will happen should the hard drive become damaged and data not re-coverable? Protecting yourself by keeping backups of important files and information can prove a saving grace should anything happen to the computer down the line. • Inspect start-up items. Certain ap-plications can be designated to launch with start-up, and this can bog down the machine and cause sluggishness. If speed issues are behind the clean-out, consider modifying the number of applications that you have in the start-up menu. • Monitor activity. There may be some-thing that is hogging your processor or using a lot of RAM. By seeing what is being used on the machine and when, you can make adjustments. While not every tip will be applicable to your particular situation, it is important to realize that a computer is a machine and it will need maintenance. Also, as technology advances at light speed, it will be neces-sary to keep up with the proper updates that will enable the computer to work at full capacity.

Though it's common to ring in the New Year by making resolutions for the year, it's far less popular to set goals for the next 12 months. Resolutions and goals might be similar, but they're not exactly the same. When setting goals, men and women are attempting to develop a plan for the year ahead with the intent of being in a better place in 365 days. Successful resolutions are typically far less encompassing. While resolutions are goal-oriented, men and women often make just one resolution that does not require a plan so much as some dedication. For instance, a goal of being more financially secure will require a plan that must be implemented for it to be a success. A resolution to quit smok-ing might involve some advice from health professionals, but in general it's up to the individual to simply stop smoking. When setting goals for the next 12 months, consider the following tips. • Brainstorm some ideas. Goals should pertain to all aspects of life, from career goals to personal goals to anything you want to accomplish around the house. Be-fore setting any goals, brainstorm as many ideas as possible for each area of your life.

SETTING GOALS FOR THE NEW YEAR

Write these ideas down, no matter how big or small they might be -- even though you might not decide to pursue each and every goal you come up with. The purpose of this is just to get some ideas flowing and to use those ideas as a foundation. If two or more ideas are similar, such as losing weight and eating healthier, then you can combine those later on and make them one goal to simply be healthier a year from now. • Rank goals by their importance to you. Goals will have varying degrees of impor-tance, and this can help you to rank them by which ones you feel are most important. This doesn't mean you can't accomplish each goal on your list. But prioritizing goals can make it easier to accomplish them. A good approach to take is to accomplish a high-priority goal, then reward yourself by tackling a more lighthearted goal that's less of a priority. For instance, if one of your big-gest priorities is to install new siding on the house and you accomplish this goal, then reward yourself by next working on one of your more fun-oriented goals, such as visit-ing a water park or attending a ballgame. Such a balance and reward system can provide motivation and make for a fun and productive year to boot. • Establish a time frame. When setting

goals with no time frame in mind, it's easy to procrastinate and downplay the signifi-cance of the goals. When setting goals, establish a time frame to increase your chances of being successful. For instance, if you have a goal to save X amount of money over the next 12 months, give your-self monthly savings markers to meet. This can help keep you on schedule and ensure you will achieve your goal come the end of the year. • Give yourself progress reports. As the year goes on, periodically assess your pro-gress. You might realize some goals have become bigger priorities while others are no longer as important, and that's perfectly alright. But once you have passed the plan-ning stage and started to pursue a goal, track your progress and stay the course if it's going well. If not, reconsider your plan and decide if it's best to lay out another course of action. Setting goals for the year ahead is a great way to ensure the next 12 months will be productive and fruitful.

Two crazy men were committed to a mental institution near a mountain lake. They were taken out one morning for a walk, accompa-nied by a nurse. As the three strolled along the lake shore, an eagle flew overhead and pooped right on the bald head of one of the

patients. The nurse saw what happened and said in great concern, "Wait right here. I'll go get some toilet paper."

As the nurse ran back toward the building, one of the men turned to the other, pointed toward the nurse, started laugh-ing and rolling on the ground, then said, "She's nuttier then we are. By the time she gets back with that toilet paper that

eagle will be a mile away."

DID YOU KNOW? The history of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation dates all the way back to 1740. Back then, the Paris Academy of Sciences officially recommended mouth-to-mouth resuscitation for drowning victims. However, CPR as we know it today involves more than just mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Chest compressions are now an important part of performing CPR, but it was not until 1891 that Dr. Friedrich Maass performed the first documented chest compression in humans. What's more, the first successful use of external chest compres-sions in human resuscitation did not occur until 1903. Even then, it was not until more than half a century later that CPR was developed. In 1960, the American Heart Associa-tion began a program to acquaint physicians with close-chest cardiac resuscitation. Three years later, after cardiologist Leonard Scherlis started the American Heart Association's CPRCommittee, the association formally endorsed CPR as a means to saving lives. Nowadays, the American HeartAssociation reports that effective bystander CPR, when provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest, can double or triple a victim's chance of survival.

THREE WILDLIFE PARK EMPLOYEES RECEIVE ANNUAL AWARDS

Guest Article by Susan Strawbridge, Park Services Specialist, Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park

Three employees at the Department of Environmental Pro-tection’s Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park received special recognition for their contributions during the park staff's annual holiday party on December 11, 2011. Park Manager Art Yerian presented plaques to Allyssa Taylor, a Park Services Specialist, who received the Walter Elliott Award. Both James Curry, a Park Ranger in Wildlife Care and Olivia Morrison, a Park Attendant in the park’s Maintenance department, were recognized with the Russel Parks Awards. The Walter Elliott Public Service Award was established in 1997 to recognize employees who demonstrate exemplary public ser-vice to colleagues, park visitors and the community. In presenting this award to Allyssa Taylor, Yerian said, "Allyssa Taylor has done a tremendous job working with our volunteer program and with our dive program. She represents the park with professionalism and enthusiasm. We are fortunate to have her on our team.” The Russel Parks Award was established in 1990 to recognize employees that are dependable, reliable and who frequently go unrecognized for the work they do. This year there were two re-cipients of the Russel Parks Award. In announcing the first of this year’s winners, Park Manager Art Yerian had this to say about Park Ranger James Curry, “James is understated in his personal-ity, in a nice way. He never fusses about his work projects, but realizes there is a job to be done and he gets it done. James has become one of the “go to” persons in the Wildlife Care depart-ment.” Also receiving the Russel Parks Award this year was Park Attendant Olivia Morrison. In presenting her with her award, Art Yerian noted, “Olivia Morrison is one of the hardest workers here at the Park. Over a year ago, she began work at the Park as a Toll Collector. When the need arose for a hard worker in the Main-tenance department, she was the logical choice. Not only does she fill the position, but she seeks out work to do and always has a smile on her face.”

"How's your new job at the factory?", one guy asked another."I'm not going back there.""Why not?""For many reasons," he answered. "The sloppiness, the shoddy workmanship, the awful language -- they just couldn't put up with it."

It's said that one person's trash is another per-son's treasure. This often applies to discarded items that others find have real value. But it's not just those discarded trinkets that can benefit others. When trash like food scraps and other refuse can be turned into a fuel that powers machines or reduces solid waste, it can be a win-win situation. An innovation called Micro Auto Gasification System, or MAGS, is the world's first solid waste treatment appliance. The technology is being developed by the U.S. Navy in conjunction with Terragon Environmental Technologies, Inc. and the Canadian Department of Defense for use in military applications and isolated habitats. How the process works is that paper, card-board, wood, plastic chemicals, food, cloth, oils, grease, biological material, animal waste, agri-cultural waste, and sludge are loaded into the treatment appliance. MAGS can process up to 40 kg (88 pounds) of as-received waste. The unit then powers a thermal process that "cooks"the waste in a high-temperature, low-oxygen environment, which essentially kills all organic material in the waste. The remain-ing material is a fuel gas dubbed "syngas." MAGS uses this fuel to run itself. Any residual waste in the unit like carbon is sequestered as a product called bio-char. It is a carbonaceous material that can be safely placed in landfills or used as a soil additive. Terragon says that a MAGS unit can treat the waste generated by a community of up to 500 people in a single day by reducing the volume by 95 percent. A system of waste management such as this can be beneficial

TURNING TRASH INTO TREASURE

waste collection and disposal as we know it could soon become a thing of the past, as developing technology manages waste far

more efficiently.

in many applications. Ships that remain at sea for long durations of time, isolated communities without waste-treatment options, resorts, hospi tals, and other situations where waste can not be transferred to other facilities can use a MAGS unit to get garbage under control. The company has also developed strategies for liq uid waste treatment that is married with MAGS into one product. The goal in all of Terragon's innovations is to sequester carbon to reduce the release of greenhouse gases and other pol lutants that can critically harm the environment. While the technology is still in its infancy, the idea of harvesting energy from trash can have very practical applications beyond isolated mar-kets. Some information indicates that enough trash to fill garbage trucks stretching from the Earth to the moon is generated every year in the United States alone. In America, 55 percent of waste is buried in landfills and most garbage

decomposes very slowly. Relying on this garbage as fuel solves the problem of overflowing landfills and the dependence on fossil fuels. Also, the technology protects the environment in a number of other ways, especially by reducing ground and water contamination. (Al-though precautions are taken to protect surrounding groundwater, air and rain from landfill contamination, few people can argue that landfills are the most efficient method of waste management.) An offshoot of the green movement has been finding innova-tive ways to handle many of the problems of waste management around the world. MAGS is still being developed, but could prove an important part of the waste management industry in the years to come.

HOLIDAY SEASON Just when many people think they're ready to pack away the wrapping paper and ribbon, Three Kings Day arrives and warrants presents anew, especially among Hispanic communities. Three Kings Day, also known as El Dia de los Tres Reyes, arrives on January 6 every year. Although the day commemorates the Christian tradition when the three wise men visited the baby Jesus and thusly can be celebrated by any Christian, Hispanics tend to be one of the larger demographics to celebrate the holiday. Better known as the Epiphany, Latin Americans spend time follow-ing certain traditions for the occasion. Children place their shoes out for the night and leave grass for the camels. There's also the tradition of exchanging gifts, much in the way the magi offered gifts to Christ. Retailers are increasingly using Three Kings Day as an opportunity to attract consumers. Some big-name retailers have hired actors in past years to dress as the wise men and pose for pictures. Others displayed cultural products relevant to the holiday. Many of the stores that offered sales for this holiday are concentrated in areas that have high Hispanic populations. Marketing experts are not quite sure if Three Kings sales strategies will extend beyond a regional event. Then again, if stores generate enough revenue for January 6 events, it just may appear on the radar at stores across the country. Hispanics are not the only people who have traditionally celebrated Three Kings Day. Elsewhere in the world the day is known by other names and celebrated in unique ways. For example, the Irish call the Epiphany Little Christmas or Women's Christmas. The women enjoy rest and relaxation after working hard through the Christmas holiday. In France, people eat the gateau de Rois (Kings' Cake) with a trinket or a bean hidden inside. Natives of England embrace the tradition of mumming, which involves acting out seasonal plays and wassailing each Three Kings Day. The Epiphany was known as Twelfth Night and the yule log was kept burning until this day. There are many different celebrations for Three Kings Day and soon it may be as commonplace to celebrate it as celebrating Christmas itself.

TO YOUR HEALTH

As prevalent as prescription medica-tions are, all-natural remedies for common illnesses and conditions are still a viable alternative to prescription medications for many people. But are these all-natural op-tions safe? In 2011, Apple founder Steve Jobs lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. Reports indicate that Jobs, a devout Buddhist, delayed surgery and other traditional treat-ments for almost a year while he partici-pated in holistic treatments for the cancer. Some of these included juice fasts, bowel cleansings, acupuncture, herbal supple-ments, and even a vegan diet. Eventually, Jobs had surgery, but some experts feel he waited too long. Although conventional care is often an effective means to treating illnesses and other conditions, there are many doc-tors who agree that implementing natural remedies at times can be safe and effec-tive. Furthermore, not all natural remedies are without merit, and some traditional

EXPLORING NATURAL REMEDIES

medicines are actually derived from natural, plant-based ingredients themselves. According to surgeon and author, Dr. Wal-ter C. Thompson, "Herbal medicine is safe because it's natural. After researching the literature, one can truly say that, at the very least, herbal medicine is safer than conven-tional drugs." Those thinking about incorporating natural remedies into their health regimen can con-sider the following options. • Nervousness and anxiety: Try lettuce,

chamomile, valerian, and rose petals. • Pain relief:Use omega-3 fatty acids, green tea, ginger root, and tumeric. • Itchiness: Witch hazel, jewelweed and aloe vera are effective. • Feminine issues: Parsley, basil and goldenseal can alleviate symptoms associ-ated with menstruation. • Antibiotics: Oregano and garlic are pur-ported to have antibiotic qualities and can fend off harmful bacteria. • Infections: Honey has long been used to heal and as an antibacterial and antifun-gal remedy. Many natural foods are effective in pre-venting and fighting cancer as well. Although natural remedies can be effec-tive, it's important for pregnant women to avoid any herbs and plant supplements until discussing the risks/benefits with their doctors. Also, some natural remedies can interact with prescription drugs or increase their potency, so it's important to talk to a doctor about any plans.

It happens every day. You have a headache or another ailment and go to the medicine cabinet to find relief. After shaking a few pills out of the bottle, you happen to glance at the expiration date stamped on the side and realize those pain-relief pills have expired. You wonder if you will get sick if you swallow them or if you can get away with it this time. Who isn't trying to stretch a dollar a little further these days? And with prescription drug costs rising and some companies cutting back on health insurance cover-age, there are thousands of people who may be between plans and cannot afford to continually restock their medicine cabinets with new drugs. Is it safe to take that anti-anxiety medication even if its expiration date has come and gone? Will those acid reducers make you even more sick? These are viable questions. For the most part, medical experts say that expired drugs are reasonably safe to take. According to information published in Pharmacology Today, the expiration date stamped on over-the-counter medication is a date at which the drug manufacturer can still guarantee full potency of the drug. The expiration date on your prescription medi-cine bottle may be the date that the pre-scription -- not the medicine -- expires, gen-erally a year after the medication was filled. A law was passed in 1979 that required drug manufacturers to issue the expiration date as a means to giving consumers what they paid for, and likely to avoid litigation over drugs that are no longer effective. Medical authorities state that the ma-

MY PILLS ARE EXPIRED. NOW WHAT?

jority of expired drugs are safe to take -- even medications that expired years ago. However, their potency may be reduced. Liquid medications, such as oral antibiot-ics, may lose their potency faster than pills. Tetracycline, a broad-spectrum antibiotic, is one that causes some controversy regarding safety after expiration. So it's best to discard tetracycline pills once they have expired. Others say that nitroglycerine and hydroco-done (Vicodin) may present some dangers after expiration, but this has not been proven in any large-scale study. If you need some more reassurance that those expired pills are fine to take, consider a study conducted by the US Food and Drug

Administration at the request of the US mili-tary. The military was considering disposing of and replacing its drug store every few years because of expiration dates, which would have come at a considerable cost. After a lengthy analysis, the FDA deter-mined that 90 percent of the more than 100 drugs they tested -- both prescription and OTC -- were still potent even 15 years after the expiration date. That doesn't mean it is always safe or effective to take an expired pill, especially if you are self-diagnosing a medical condi-tion and subsequently self-medicating. Medications should always be used under the guidance of a doctor who can monitor dosing and progress. Also, medications should never be shared among different members of the family for whom they were not prescribed. Individuals who stockpile medications also run the risk of some other dangers. There's the chance of grabbing the wrong bottle and taking a medication that is not needed, a problem common with the elderly that can result in illness. With nar-cotic and prescription drug abuse a rising epidemic among young people, having a cabinet full of drugs could prove tempting to adolescents thinking about getting high from drugs readily available in their own homes. The best advice regarding expired drugs is when in doubt, throw them out. But if you've just swallowed some expired ibuprofen and are worried about side ef-fects, chances are there is nothing to worry about.

Few families are fortunate enough to say they have not been impacted by Alzheimer's disease. A progressive, degenerative disease of the brain, Alzheimer's impairs thinking and memory, accounting for 50 to 80 percent of dementia cases according to the Alzheimer's Association. Though many people's experiences with Alzheimer's disease involves an elderly relative, the disease is not exclusive to the elderly. Up to 5 percent of people with the disease have early-onset Alzheimer's, which most often appears when someone is in their 40s and 50s. In 2011, 59-year-old Pat Summitt, the all-time winningest coach in NCAA basketball history and a beloved figure on the campus of the University of Tennessee, revealed that she had been diagnosed with early-onset dementia, Alzheimer's type. That announcement opened the eyes of men and women across the country, who might otherwise never have known that dementia could strike so early or to someone who seemed as healthy as Summitt, who vowed to continue coaching despite the diagnosis. Because it can strike men and women even if they aren't elderly, it's important to know these 10 warning signs of Alzheimer's, courtesy of the Alzheimer's Association and the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life. Memory loss is one of the most common signs of Alzheimer's. This is especially so if men and women forget things that happened very recently, which can negatively impact their daily lives. Addi-tional signs include forgetting important dates and events; asking for the same information over and over again; or relying on memory aides such as reminder notes or even family members for things individuals could once remember on their own.

2. Difficulty planning. Some people might start to exhibit difficulty following a plan or working with numbers, be it following a recipe or paying the monthly bills. Concentration is often difficult for those exhibiting symptoms of Alzheimer's.

3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks. Daily tasks such as driving to work or remembering the rules of a familiar game will prove difficult for people with Alzheimer's.

4. Disorientation with regards to time and/or place. Nearly everyone has had momentary lapses where they forget what time it is or what day it is. But such lapses are not momentary for people with Alzheimer's, who might even get lost on their own street and not remember how to get home.

5. trouble understanding images and spatial relationships. Some people with Alzheimer's have difficulty reading, judging distance or determining color or contrast. For example, a person with Alzheimer's might walk past a mirror and not realize he or she is the person in the mirror.

THE 10 WARNING SIGNS OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Fearfulness or feelings of anxiety are changes in mood and personality that could indicate

Alzheimer’s disease.

6. New problems with words in speaking or writing. People with Alzheimer's might experience trouble holding or joining a conversation. An example is stopping in the middle of a conversation and having no idea how to continue. They might also struggle with vocabulary, often having trouble finding the right word to express what they're thinking.

7. Misplacing things. People with Alzheimer's might put things in unusual places and then experience difficulty retracing their steps to find those items. This tends to occur more frequently over time, and they often ac-cuse others of stealing items they simply can't find.

8. Decreased or poor judgement. Poor judgement, such as not visiting the doctor or mishandling finances, is another warning sign for Alzheimer's. These poor deci-sions can extend to personal grooming, which men and women with Alzheimer's might neglect.

9. withdrawal from society. Men and women with Alzheimer's might start to withdraw from society, removing themselves from social activities, projects at work or hobbies. Avid sports fans might no longer be able to follow their favorite team, while social butterflies might grow reclusive.

10. Changes in mood and personality. People with Alzheimer's might experience mood swings for no apparent reason and can become anxious, confused, depressed, fearful, or suspicious. Acting out of character might also be indica-tive of Alzheimer's. More information about Alzheimer's disease is available at www.alz.org and www.alzheimer.ca.

DAYTIME DROWSINESSDo you find yourself reaching for a can of soda or a cup of coffee during the day to banish fatigue? Many do. But you may want to grab a bottle of water instead. Re-search indicates that lack of water is the No. 1 trigger of daytime fatigue. Therefore, not only can drinking adequate supplies of water keep you refreshed, it can also help to keep you more awake - even during a boring business meeting.

DID YOU KNOW? The body needs vitamin D to help absorb calcium, which is re-sponsible for keeping bones, muscles and even the heart healthy and strong. Without enough vitamin D, men and women are at a heightened risk for osteoporosis, a bone condition in which bones become brittle and fragile due to tissue loss. Vitamin D is also beneficial for those who love to exercise. Muscles that don't get enough calcium will cramp, hurt or feel weak, possibly leading to chronic muscle aches pains. If the body is getting enough vitamin D, muscles are less likely to cramp or ache. While it's possible to include vitamin D in a daily diet, it's also difficult because there are not many foods rich in vitamin D. However, men and women can take a multivitamin or even a vitamin D pill to ensure they get their daily recommended amount of vitamin D.

When cooking cabbage, the trick to keeping it green is to cook it very briefly. To add flavor, add some bacon and nutmeg, just like in the following recipe for "Braised Cabbage With Bacon and Nutmeg" from Sophie Braimbridge's "Stylish Mediterranean" (Kyle Books).

Braised Cabbage With Bacon and NutmegServes 4

1 1/4 pounds Savoy cabbage 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 5 ounces bacon or pancetta, sliced or diced 1 large garlic clove 1 heaped tablespoon chopped sage or rosemary leaves Good pinch of nutmeg Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and wash them if dirty or trim if wilting. Cut in half, removing any thick stems. Then finely slice. Quarter the remaining cabbage, remove the thick core and finely slice. Add the oil and bacon to a large lidded saucepan and cook on a high heat until light golden brown. Chop the garlic and sage, turn the heat to low, and add them to the pan. Cook briefly, then add the cabbage, adding a splash of water if you think the cabbage might brown. Season with nutmeg, salt and pepper. Cover the pan and cook gently for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, and adding a dash more water if it's sticking on the bottom. You want the cabbage to retain its nice green color. Serve immediately -- you can reheat it, but the color may fade!

A retired husband and wife in their 60s were dining at an expensive restaurant when a stunningly beautiful young woman in her late 20s came over, gave the husband a big kiss, and told him that she would meet with him later. His wife glared at him and demanded to know, "Who is that?" "What's the big deal," replied the husband. "That's my mistress." "Your mistress!" snapped the wife. "I want a divorce and I want it now!" "No problem," said the husband. "Just keep in mind that I have arranged that everything that I own is protected in an international corporate trust. You can sue me in divorce court but you will get very little — if anything at all." "What this means," continued the husband,"is that there will be no more shopping trips to Paris for you, no more wintering in the Carribean and South Ameri-ca, no Mercedes for you to drive, and no more country club where the rich and sophisticated hang out. The decision is up to you." Just then the wife noticed one of the couple's neighbors from the ritzy area where they lived. "Who's that young woman with Bill Richards?" asked the wife. "That's Bill's mistress," answered the husband. "Ours is much prettier," declared the wife proudly.
