Wow! Wow! Wow!

Welcome to fall and the program year at Fredsville! There is a lot to get involved with! There is a lot to participate in! There is a lot to study! There is a lot to pray for! There is a lot to be excited about! There is a lot that God is calling us to do! There is a lot that God is calling us to serve! There is a lot that God is calling us to listen to! There is a lot to be grateful for! This fall alone there are a number of new ministries to get involved with, such as: JAM, First Steps, 5th Quarter, Bible Studies, a new woman’s group, a men’s group will be beginning, a great musical to attend. All these ministries and so many more are an opportunity for you to deepen your relationship with each other and with God. All these ministries are an opportunity for education. All these ministries are an opportunity for you to invite friends to join into the ministry here at Fredsville. But there is more!

There is Confirmation classes, Women’s circles, Committees (property, worship and music, education, youth, social ministry…..), WinGS, Fall Bazaar, Sunday School, Handbells, Choir, Quilting, Web site meetings, Dinners, Potlucks, Danish Dancing (sometimes the office staff just breaks out in a little Danish dancing!)……………………………………

WOW! And then there is that vote. You might have heard about it? Phase 3? Will we or will we not vote for a new building. That is up to the Holy Spirit. Be assured, no matter the outcome of the vote, there is ministry to do here at Fredsville, and a lot of it! There are people to reach in the name of Jesus Christ. There are hungry to be fed in our own community, there are children and adults who need to hear the gospel. That is the ministry that Fredsville has been doing since 1871. That is the ministry we are called to do and we will continue to do together in the name of Jesus Christ!

Because of a “Health Information Privacy” rule, hospitals cannot contact the church when members are hospitalized.

Confirmation classes to begin on September 4th at 6:30! Wow! Mark your calendars now for confirmation classes to begin on September 4th 6:30-8:00 pm. Supper will be provided. Students in 6th-8th grade are invited to attend, please bring your Bibles and pencils with you to class! If you are new to confirmation a good study Bible will be given to you at your first class. Any questions regarding confirmation can be directed to Pastor Lisa. At our first session you will be given a schedule and handbook for the rest of the year. It’s going to be an amazing year!

Fredsville Lutheran Church musical

Come hear the word of God through music, dance and drama as Fredsville Church presents the musical “Once Upon A Parable”. Over twenty people will present several well-known parables in an entertaining and uplifting style. Great for kids and everyone!!! Performances will be held during special worship services on Sunday September 8 at 9:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the Fredsville Church sanctuary. The offering collected at the evening service will go to the Dike food bank. The service will be approximately 70 minutes long.

High School Students 5th Quarter begins!!!!!

Join Pastor Lisa, Vicar Ron, and Trish Weichers in the community room at the Library after the home football games for games, food, devotions and sharing! Bring your friends with you!!!!! We are really excited about this new ministry and have great games and craziness planned as well as the building of friendships, spending time in the word and, of course, there will be food!!! Our first 5th quarter will be Friday September 6th and is open to ALL High School students! 5th quarter will also meet on September 27, October 18 and 25!

The Gospel According to Dr. Seuss! Interested in a fun and different way to look at the gospel? Join Pastor Lisa for four Thursday nights (or just one if that is all that fits in your schedule!) for a delightful look at scripture with some insights we can glean from Dr. Seuss stories. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall at 7:00 p.m. and finish by 8:15 p.m. Please bring your Bibles with you, or one can be provided.

Ruth Circle

Ruth Circle will meet at the church Tuesday, September 3rd, at 6:30 p.m. for a potluck supper. Jeanne Thuesen will lead the Lesson.

All women of the church are invited and encouraged to attend.

ATTENTION ALL FREDSVILLE WOMEN: The annual fall luncheon and bazaar is scheduled for October 11th. It consists of a luncheon, bake sale and selling of greeting cards and craft items. Please consider a contribution to this annual event. All food items (such as baked, snacks, garden items) are welcome, as well as craft items. Watch for the sign-up book for food items for the luncheon and for helpers the day of the event.

Any help you can provide helps for a successful bazaar that enables us to donate to many charitable causes. GUYS, your help is appreciated too–especially for table set up and clean up afterwards! Bazaar Committee

Q & A by Sue Green

Katelyn Soska attends WIYLDE September 2013

For this month’s Q & A, I interviewed Katelyn Soska, 10th grade daughter of Tom and Lori Soska. Katelyn attended WIYLDE – the ELCA Leadership Camp for the second time this summer.

Q: What is WIYLDE? When and where was it held? A: WIYLDE stands for “Wholly Iowa Youth Leadership and Discipling Event”. It is an annual camp for youth in grades 9-12 to learn how to become future leaders of the church. It was held July 22-27 at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Q: How did you find out about this camp? A: My sister Kelsey attended WILYDE for two years while she was in high school and had a great experience there. I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to go. Q: How many high school students were in attendance? A: There were 36 students; all except for one were from NE Iowa. Q: Were there any boys at this camp? A: Only five and they were very popular with the girls! Q: What was a typical day like? A: We would wake up at 7:00 and go to breakfast. After that, we would go to our small groups. The students were separated into WIYLDE year 1 and WIYLDE year 2 groups. In our small groups, we concentrated on the 24th chapter of Luke. We also learned how to

lead conversations about our faith and the church. Afterwards, everyone went to the same Bible Study. In the Bible Study, we studied “The Road to Emmaus”. When we finished the Bible Study, we went to the lunch buffet. (Luther has great food!) Following lunch, we met in our small groups again. After this small group, we had a different activity each day for 2 hours. One day we heard stories of different social issues. On the last day, we had silly fun games such as a balloon toss. After supper we went to “Faith Talk” which was lead by the 2nd year WIYLDE students. The 2nd year student would read a Bible verse and then the six students in their group would discuss it. We finished our days with Worship. The music this year was “traditional” and we sang lots of Kyries to piano accompaniment. (Note: Kyries are brief petitions that have the response, “Lord Have Mercy”.) The last event was called “Camp Fire”. We sang songs and talked to each other. Our “lights out” was at 11:30. Q: Did you make any new friends? A: Yes! I made some new friends last year. However this year, I made even stronger friendships. My new friends and I have been “texting” and we look forward to getting together. Thankfully, I get my license September 26th! Q: Would you recommend the WILYDE leadership camp for other Fredsville students? A: Yes! Even if you don’t know where your faith is headed or you don’t feel real connected to God, you should still go. It will really help you to understand more about God and your faith. You also make a lot of special friends. Note from Katelyn: I would like to thank the Endowment Committee who generously paid for part of my camp expenses both last year and this year. Note from Sue: Katelyn applied for and has been chosen to be on the LYO (Lutheran Youth Organization) Board. At their monthly meetings, they will be planning various get-togethers for the ELCA Youth of NE Iowa. This includes the Middle School Lock-In held in October and a High School get-together held in the spring.

Handbell Choir practices will begin on Wednesday September 4th at 6:30 p.m.

Practice dates are September 11, 18, and 25.

For your enjoyment, the handbells are scheduled to play on the fourth Sunday of each month: September 22, October 27, and

November 24. (The Christmas dates are not available)

Senior Choir The Senior Choir will practice Sundays at 8:20 a.m.

and at 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday evening.

World Relief Needs requested by Quilting Ladies

For layettes: Full size bars of wrapped bath soap Sleepers, preferably without feet Infant and toddler socks Diaper/safety pins Dark colored hand towels Gently used blankets For quilting: Used sheets, used drapes etc. When you bring your donated items to church please put them on a back table in the Fellowship Hall. Please clearly label World Relief/Quilting so the items are not misdirected.

Thank you for your help in this ministry. The quilting ladies meet every Thursday morning, 9:00-11:00 a.m. Everyone is welcome, even if you can’t sew there’s something to do!

Fredsville Council Minutes July 21, 2013

The Meeting was called to order by President Jeff Schmidt at 7:00 pm Members in attendance: Darla Andersen, Jacque Bakker, Wendall

A devotion and prayer were led by Pastor Lisa Treasurer’s report was presented by Holly Kruger. In addition to the

ledger and budget reports, she reported following balances in the Memorial Fund - $12,913.30, Building Fund -$918.55 and Endowment Fund -$107,949.10. Cost of remodeling of the Vicar’s house came in under the budgeted amount of $9000. Motion by Darla, seconded by Audrey to approve the report. Motion passed.

Minutes of the June 23 meeting and June 30 special meeting meeting were read. Motion by Steve, seconded by Jacque to approve. Motion passed.

New Business

1. The copier is not functioning properly. We are paying for color copies that are being printed in black and white, Mac computers cannot copy to the printer and copies with graphics take an extremely long time to print. Pastor presented a proposal to replace the current copier with one that would alleviate the above problems at slightly less monthly cost. A motion was made by Darla, seconded by Jennifer, to replace the copier with the new model. Motion passed.

2. Cottage meetings will be held after the services on August 18th and 25th to discuss and explain the proposed amendments to the by-laws.

Old Business

1. Phase 3 followup: Pledge cards are being returned. 2. The Semi-annual meeting agenda was finalized.

Pastor’s Report was submitted and accepted.

Committee Reports

Property Council Rep: Wendall Bergmann and Lance Loger The lighting in the sanctuary is being looked at. A plumber is

being asked to repair the north sink and the hand washing sink in the kitchen. Seals on an entry door will be replaced.

Social Ministry Council Rep: Audrey Stefan and Pat Pruisner The food drive to welcome Vicar Ron and Angie was

successful. The committee and other interested members will be touring “The Nest” at Operation Threshold and also the Food Bank on Tuesday.

Christian Education Council Reps: Jennifer Verhulst 1. LuAnn Jones is the new committee chair. 2. VBS begins July 29. 3. The monthly after school programs co-sponsored with the

Methodist Church begin in September. WINGS (3rd-5th grade) resumes Sept. 11 and JAM, a new program for Kindergarten – 2nd grade begins September 4.

4. Plans are being made for First Steps Ministry, a family oriented program for parents/ siblings and children preschool age and younger. They will meet immediately following worship several times a year. The focus is for parents and children to spend “God” time together doing activities and learning together.

Cemetery Council Rep: Doug Dall The bases for the benches have arrived and the seats will be

here soon. The bases should be installed this week. Endowment Council Rep: Jacque Bakker

Additional requests have been received. No meeting has been scheduled to determine distribution requests.

Worship and Music, Evangelism and Stewardship, Mutual Ministry and Historical committees had no report. The Council President also had nothing additional to report.

The next Council meeting will be August 25 at 7:00 p.m.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 with the Lord’s Prayer.

Building relationships that make a difference Relationships occur throughout our lives. We go through life building them with family, friends, ourselves and of course, with God. These relationships shape us, give us happiness, provide us with support and so much more. At Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI), we build healthy relationships with our clients to help them in their times of need. LSI staff work closely with children, families and individuals to build on strengths, identify struggles and ultimately find success. Across our services, whether we are meeting with people in their homes, on our residential treatment campuses or in the community, LSI works to develop skills that last a lifetime, and sometimes relationships that do too.

“He’s a good kid, and he just keeps getting brighter.” As 11-year-old Zac chats away about his latest library book, one packed

with heroes and adventure, his smile lights up the kitchen. Zac’s own story is now full of adventures, too— family vacations, laughing with his siblings and exploring their rural farm.

Last year Zac lived at LSI’s Beloit Residential Treatment Center in Ames, waiting for a forever family. In a farmhouse 135 miles away, Ken Merill and his wife Evelyn, foster and adoptive parents for over 25 years, decided they had room in their hearts and home for another child. It turned into a happy ending for both.

Beloit provides 24-7 mental health services for children with severe emotional or behavioral disorders. Many, though not all, have faced trauma from past abuse or neglect. In 2012, 42% of children at Beloit had at least one parent’s parental rights terminated (or were in the process of having parental rights terminated).

“We heard about Zac at Beloit and went to visit a few times,” said Ken. “He’s a good kid, and he just keeps getting brighter. We’ve seen so many positive changes since he’s been with us.”

LSI helped Zac prepare to be part of a family, through skill-building, therapy and transition visits.

“When I see a kid go into a foster or adoptive home, it’s like a mom who is watching her child graduate from high school,” said Angie Summers, LSI caseworker. “I see how hard they worked to accomplish this.”

Being adopted, Zac said, is a “good thing.”

It means Zac, who also has cerebral palsy, now simply gets to be a kid. That means going fishing on his last birthday and climbing trees with his brothers.

“We put a section of ladder up in the pine tree where a flat limb comes out. He manages to get down most times,” said Ken with a smile.
