Susan Crosbie sent Pastor Bjornstad a letter and then gave permission to print some of it here. It is beautiful and meaningful for ALL of us to 1) praise the Lord for what he has given us here at our church, and 2) continue to encourage and love each other even more!

SUSAN’S LETTER (exerpts):

“My friend left her LCMS church in New Jersey two months ago and I want to share her story with you. Irene is my age and her mother is in her mid nineties with mild dementia and mobility problems. Picture a woman much like my own mother. Irene said no one at her church ever helped her get her Mom into church, even when she was obviously struggling.

I told her about Lillian Colbert nearly knocking me down in the her enthusiasm to LEAP to hold open the church doors for Mom and me.

Irene said no one ever helped her mother maneuver her walker down the isle and into the pew. I told her of Kevin Woolverton reaching out to take Mom’s elbow to steady her while she goes over the un-even carpet.

Irene said no one ever greeted her mother at church and maybe that was because of the dementia. I told her of Jim Calpin taking Mom’s hand and loudly saying, “Hi Mom. How are you doing?”

Irene said the ushers didn’t help her get her mother up to the altar for communion. Which for the elderly is “The Place” to go - and not the pews. Going to the altar is like going to the cross for them. I told Irene how the ushers help me get Mom to the alter altar and how I have noticed that some of the congregational men will switch sides

PEACE NEWS AND NOTES

with their wives in order to be by Mom’s side. Un-obtrusive but ever ready to help...

And I also told Irene how the ushers are teaching and watching two young teen boys to be helpers in getting Mom safely to and from the altar. At first I was anxious but the boys were great with Mom.

Irene has not been to her church for two months now and no one has called to see what is up. Irene is looking for a new church home. Peace is not only home buy my family is there. Thank you for that. The congregation of Peace has not only their eyes open but their hearts as well.

Thank you SO much.

Being Like Christ

Philippian 2:1 Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, 2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. 3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves....

THE STORY OF MOTHER'S DAY!Ana M. Jarvis was deeply attached to her mother whose name was Mrs. Ana Reese Jarvis. Mrs. Ana Reese Jarvis had been the daughter of a pastor and had taught in a Methodist Sunday school at Grafton, West Virginia.

Mrs. Jarvis died in 1905. Two years later, the Sunday school superintendent of her Grafton congregation asked Ana to help him arrange a memorial for the woman who had been so influential in that church. This set Ana thinking. It seemed to her that children often do not do enough to show their moms that they appreciate them while they are still alive.

Grafton held its special service on the second Sunday of May, 1907, the anniversary of Mrs. Jarvis' death. The following year, Ana convinced her own church in Philadelphia to hold a Mothers' Day service on May 10, 1908. Ana supplied the church with white carnations, which had been her mom's favorite flower.

After that, Ana wrote thousands of letters and held many interviews to promote a national Mother's Day. She enlisted friends behind her effort, too.

It took them six years, but in the end they succeeded. On May 8, 1914, both houses of the United States Congress passed resolutions establishing a Mother's Day observance. Acting on the authority of that resolution, President Wilson on this day, May 9, 1914, issued a proclamation regarding Mothers' Day:

"Now, Therefore, I, Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the said Joint Resolution, do hereby direct the government officials to display the United States flag on all government buildings and do invite the people of the United States to display the flag at their homes or other suitable places on the second Sunday in May as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our

Talk to your parents before it’s too late

Talking to your parents about caregiving, end-of-life issues and their wishes is important, but many people put it off because of being uncomfortable. Reduce the stress and start by discussing the location of information, not the contents.

One tool that can help is a financial inventory, which should be updated annually and include:

Legal documents: property deeds, wills, trusts, living wills, health care and financial directives, and birth, marriage and military discharge certificates.

Contact information: attorneys, accountants, financial planners, physicians and anyone who provides financial, legal and medical advice and care.

Current account information: type, number and institution for all financial accounts, including checking, savings, retirement, investment, plus loans and insurance policies.

For financial guidance, contact Torie Yoder, Financial Associate, FIC at (570) 558-2224 or [email protected] today, or visit Thrivent.com.
