Peace Begins With a Smile Mother Teresa We are all very excited about the great learning that continues to happen here at Monsignor Doyle School. Our Provincial Achievement test results were consistent with last year with 92% our grade 6 students achieving acceptable standard in L.A., Math and Science and 88% achieving acceptable standard in Social Studies. We congratulate all the students who wrote last year’s Provincial Achievement Tests, as they worked very hard to achieve these results. Our grade 3 teachers have been gathering both language arts and math assessment information to be shared with parents during the first Parent/Teacher Interviews scheduled for the end of November. This will serve to guide instruction for those teachers as the students learn through the year. Mr. Calvelo’s grade 4 students and Mrs. Vigna’s grade 4 class hosted a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration liturgy with beautiful songs and an engaging liturgical representation of the Thanksgiving spirit. Here is the link to the video that Mr. Calvelo put together https://t.co/0lBdBz86zf. This month we look forward to our Remembrance Day Celebration with Mr. Lee’s and Mrs. Miller’s grade 5 students on Tuesday, November 10 at 9:30am. We will celebrate with both St. Vincent de Paul School and Monsignor Doyle students together. We are very happy to welcome two student teachers from St. Mary’s University to our school staff. Mr. Stephan DeFritas will be working with Mr. Lee and his grade 5 class. Peace Begins With a Smile Mother Teresa

We are all very excited about the great learning that continues to happen here at Monsignor Doyle School.

NOVEMBER 2015

Miss Alisha Lemay will be working with Ms. Koop and her grade 1 students. Thank you to Ms. Koop and Mr. Lee for offering mentorship to these new teachers. They will be with us from November 9th to December 18th. We had a wonderful guest leading a week long “Artist in Residency” program for our last week in October. A residency provides an in depth opportunity for an artist to work with students and teachers. Gail Bartel, The Artist Lady, provided amazing inspiration, materials and instruction to bring out fantastic results in our students from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Check out our school Twitter pictures found on our Twitter feed https://twitter.com/MsgrDoyle_CCSD or look on the school website on the left side of the home page. We are grateful to our School Council who fund-raised to pay for this residency. Thank you to all parents for supporting their fund raising initiatives to enrich the learning here at Monsignor Doyle School.

Monsignor Doyle also recently welcomed Alien In-Line Skating who provided instruction to our Kindergarten to grade 3 students from October 23rd-30th. Your Activity Fees provided the funding for Alien In-Line Skating.

Please take a few minutes to read the newsletter each month and place the calendar on your fridge. This way you will keep informed about what is happening in the school.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION 2016-2017 ONGOING! All Calgary Catholic School District elementary schools offer a kindergarten program. Depending on total kindergarten enrolment, schools may offer a choice of morning or

afternoon classes on a first-come, first-served basis. A child who turns four years old on or before March 1 is eligible to attend kindergarten the following fall. To register for Kindergarten for September 2016, a child must therefore turn four years old on or before March 1, 2016. Your child’s birth certificate is required at the time of registration. Contact the office if you have any questions.

RECYCLING To raise funds for our new Learning Commons, we have reopened our school account at the Crowfoot Bottle Depot. We are sending our refundable containers

collected at school to the bottle depot with the help of parent volunteers. If you would

like to either take your recyclables directly to the depot and donate your refund to the Monsignor Doyle account or bring them to the school on the last Friday of every month (Bottle Recycle Fridays), we will realize our goals even sooner. Thanks for your support.

SPIRIT DAYS

The grade 6 students meet together with Administration to set up Spirit Days every month. This month they have chosen to have Moustache Day in support of ‘Movember’ and Men’s Cancers. Moustache Day will be on Friday, November 20th. We will collect loonie donations that day to support

finding a cure for cancer.

TECHNOLOGY NIGHT FOR PARENTS Tuesday, November 17th 6:30-7:30pm We invite parents to join us for an instruction opportunity to look at and try some of the technology we have available for our students. Google Docs, Read/Write and good websites for younger students will be presented by staff members. Please

join us to help your child get the best out of these resources.

PROGRESS REPORTS Progress reports will be sent home on Friday, November 20th. Parent/Teacher Interviews will be booked online with instructions coming home in the progress report card envelope. Our Interviews will be 15 minutes in length.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Mark your calendars for the Monsignor Doyle Christmas Concert on Tuesday, December 15th. We will have an afternoon performance at 1:00pm for grandparents and relatives and an evening performance at 6:30pm for parents. Our School Council will

host a Bake Sale following the evening performance. Please join us in ushering in the festive season with our students and ease your Christmas baking by supporting our School Council!

CELEBRATING STUDENTS If your child has been involved in some special achievement in the community and you would like us to recognize his/her accomplishment, please send us a note by the last Friday of every month.

STUDENT DROP OFF PROCEDURES

Thank you to all our families for their continued support of our Drop-Off and Pick-Up procedures. Just a reminder as we go forward to keep the process moving smoothly we ask our families to keep the following points in mind: - Please pull your vehicle as far forward as possible when entering into the drop-off loop so that a maximum amount of vehicles can be accommodated in the drive-through area at one

time. - Please do not leave your vehicle unattended, this is a drop-off and pick-up only zone. No parking please. - We are a Catholic School District and as always our expectations are that we treat each other with dignity and respect at all times. - Please keep in mind that we have children moving in and around the vehicles as they are being dropped off so extreme caution and attention is required by all.

Please consider all of the children as if they were your own when you drive by our school and please refrain from entering the Staff Parking Lot. Unfortunately we have only so many parking stalls available to our staff members and when you park in these stalls to even “briefly pop in” or to “just drop something off” it may actually prevent a staff member from parking and therefore not being available to your child.

WE DAY Students at Monsignor Doyle School will be carrying the message of We Day forward through our commitment to social justice and by demonstrating our Catholic Community of Caring values. Our children are our future and are called to lead in an effort of global change. We Day is an educational event and has been coined as the movement of our time where young

people are being called to lead in an effort of global change. Me to We’s co-founders, Craig and Marc Kielburger, were inspired by a Village Chief who brought a community of people together to help a group of student volunteers build a school. That moment inspired them to create an organization where people come together for the greater good. A world that is a little less about the ‘me’ and a lot more about the ‘we’. What great models of Walking Humbly with God, our district theme for this year!

SUMMIT KIDS CHILD CARE CENTRE

We are very excited to continue to have Summit KIDS program again this year. This wonderful program has continued to grow over the past year. They are still accepting registrations and encourage parents to swing by the program at any time to see what they are all about. The program runs from 7:00am until

morning entry and afternoon dismissal until 6:00pm. We are very excited to let you know that they will continue to provide service at Monsignor Doyle next year as well. You can contact them at 403-477-0490 or simply pop by to talk with them.

FLU SEASON

In Canada, Flu season typically runs from November through until April. It is estimated that 10-25% of Canadians could have the flu each year. According to Health Canada these are the symptoms of influenza:

Almost Always Common Sometimes • Cough and fever • Fatigue

• Muscle Aches • Sore Throat • Headache • Decreased appetite

• Nausea • Vomiting • Diarrhea

As we enter into the flu season please keep these following points in mind: • We need to be reminded that this is typical flu season and annually we see increased absences at this time. • Our school has protocols in place for dealing with staff or students who become ill and our staff is trained and prepared for this. • We have daily cleaning protocols in place that eliminate bacteria on touch points and high traffic areas. • We are in regular communication with the health authorities regarding increased absences throughout the school as they occur.

BOOKFAIR

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING MADE EASY!!! We are excited to announce that our Scholastic Book Fair is coming soon. It will be held in the Monsignor Doyle Library from Monday, November 23rd to Friday, November 27th, 2015. The annual Book Fair raises funds specifically for the

library for new books and resources. Mrs. McLane is looking for Book Fair Volunteers to help students and shoppers select the right books and maintain the table displays. Even if you can only spare 30 minutes to help, your assistance would be quite welcome. If you cannot volunteer, you can still help us by simply spreading the word about our upcoming Fair and by joining your child in attending the Fair! If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Mrs. McLane at [email protected]. We thank you in advance for your support!

RUN CLUB NEWS Now that the cold weather is upon us here are a few hints for dressing for the cold. 1. Layer - up: Winter jackets are hard to run in and children over heat. A long sleeve shirt topped with a fleece and a wind layer are better choices for running outside to -10 degrees. Sweatpants or stretchy pants with or without a wind layer help to keep the legs toasty. 2. Keep your lid warm - a hat and or scarf are essential in keeping the head and neck warm. 3. Toasty toes - winter boots are impossible to run in -

running shoes with rubber (not plastic) soles are best with a thin wool sock; and 4. Fingers are friends - keep fingers warm with windproof fleece mitts, gloves work as well but mitts allow the fingers to stay together and keep each other warm. Run club's official cutoff temperature is -10 Celsius including wind chill. On those days we will do sprints, laps and drills in the gym to work on speed. Children who wish to run outside on days from -10 degrees to -18 degrees will be accompanied by two teachers.

ST. PETER’S CHURCH NEWS The snow is falling, and it’s time to re-tell that old, old story.

Christmas Pageant rehearsals begin with an Audition on Sunday, November 22nd at St. Peter’s Parish. Those present at the Audition will receive first consideration for all parts, and there are lots of parts to go around. This is open to all children ages 3 and up. Older youth and adults are needed to assist with costumes, props, and supervision. (A police check and “Called to Protect” are required for all adults.) The Christmas Pageant will be presented on Christmas Eve, just before the 4:30pm Mass.

Catholic Education Sunday Reminder – Sunday, November 1

Sunday, November 1 is Catholic Education Sunday – an opportunity to support quality Catholic education in your community. There will be a special collection at mass on November 1. Share the spirit of generosity with the Calgary Catholic Education Foundation, a charitable organization dedi-cated to enhancing educational experiences and initiatives for over 53,000 students in the Calgary Catholic School District.

Faith Day – Monday, November 2

All schools and administrative offices will be closed on Monday, November 2 as Calgary Catholic celebrates our annual Faith Day. Faith Day is an opportunity for all district staff to come together as a community to reflect on our beliefs and values and to deepen our understanding of our shared mission in Catholic education. This year, Father Greg Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries, will be the keynote speaker. Father Greg will be speaking on his ministry to the marginalized and how we are all called to work on the ‘peripheries’ as Pope Francis directs and models for us.

Remembrance Day – Wednesday, November 11

All schools and administrative offices will be closed on Wednesday, November 11 to observe Remem-brance Day. Our schools hold special ceremonies prior to Remembrance Day to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives in world conflicts. Remembrance Day is a time to pray for peace, and to con-sider what we are doing as individuals and as a community to bring God’s peace and love to the world.

National Child Day – Friday, November 20

On November 20, Canada and countries around the world celebrate National Child Day as a remind-er of our shared commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The CRC is the most comprehensive treaty in support of children. Calgary Catholic is a partner in National Child Day Alberta. Wear blue on November 20 to show your support of National Child Day and visit the website to learn more about events happening in Calgary.
