Message from the Director and Peace Corps Vanuatu Staff

Peace Corps Vanuatu strives to provide the highest quality of volunteers to provide support to Vanuatu Government partners, local communities, and non-governmental agencies. Peace Corps Vanuatu invests hundreds of hours of training to prepare volunteers for their service. Peace Corps Volunteers must speak Bislama before they are allowed to begin their service. They also must demonstrate a high degree of sensitivity to and an understanding of the culture(s) present in Vanuatu. Peace Corps relies on a highly experienced and motivated team of program, training, and administrative staff to carry out this mission.

Vanuatu represents unique opportunities and challenges to even the most dedicated Peace Corps Volunteers. Compared to the other 8,000 Peace Corps Volunteers serving around the world, Vanuatu volunteers are 3 times more likely to NEVER have electricity; 5 times more likely to NEVER have mobile phone service; and 3 times more likely to NEVER have internet at their sites. Based on this data, it is safe to say that Peace Corps Volunteers in Vanuatu give up more than the average Peace Corps Volunteer during their 27 months of service.

This year Peace Corps Vanuatu focused on improving its ability to respond to disasters. This year, with the support of U.S. AID, the National Disaster Management Office will train 14 Peace Corps Volunteers and 14 of their counterparts. As secondary projects, Peace Corps Volunteers will return to their communities and at their schools, and assist communities implement the plans developed by the National Disaster Management Office.

This year has also focused on capacity building. Where feasible Peace Corps Vanuatu has provided training to both Peace Corps Volunteer and their counterparts in both Education and Health. In 2013, both 15 counterpart teachers and 15 counterpart health workers received the same technical training in Port Vila. This year, with the support of U.S. AID, Peace Corps Vanuatu trained 14 Peace Corps Volunteers and 14 of their counterparts in Project Management and Design.

A group of our Volunteers collaborated to celebrate the diversity within their cohort and share it with Vanuatu communities and friends. The result is a pamphlet, song and video. The song is performed by a local band and the video was produced with the assistance of a local videographer. The video is on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6Gi2YFA-DY

Peace Corps Vanuatu thanks the Vanuatu Government, our development partners both local and international, for their support of the Peace Corps program in Vanuatu. It is our hope that this document conveys some measure of Peace Corps Vanuatu’s success in achieving community based development goals, and doing so in a manner that is respectful of the culture and dignity of those served.
