The Story of Football

Where did Football originate from?

There are many countries and cultures that could claim this – the Chinese, the Japanese, the Ancient Greeks and the Romans, Persians, Vikings and Italians and many more played a ball game with their feet long before our era.


The exact answer to this really depends upon what one recognizes to be the game of football.

If one recognizes the most rudimentary form when the foot was applied to the ball – then the Chinese played it (the so called "football") as back as 3000 years ago.

However the football in its modern form was born in 1863 with the foundation of the English Football Association.

Who made up the first organized set of rules for Football?

Why did they do this?

The Football Association (FA) in London established the first organized set of rules for football.

They did so in October 1863 along with the inception of this Association.


Why did they do this?

Till 1863, there was no single set of fundamental rules that was followed by all football clubs and schools.

Shin-kicking, tripping and carrying the ball with hands was permitted and accepted by some of them and not by the others.

There was an eternal dispute between the camp who did not accept this to be a part of the game and the others.


Why did they do this? Finally on 26th October 1863,

eleven London clubs and schools met to form ‘The Football Association’ whose main priority was to clear this confusion and propose a common set of rules.

These new rules banned shin-kicking and tripping and most importantly forbade the carrying of the football with the hands (or even handling it).

Why did they do this? The people who wanted the shin-kicking, tripping and carrying

the ball with hands to be acceptable in the game (Rugby style) parted their way.

The game played in line with these new rules set out by ‘The Football Association’ came to be known as SOCcer (originating from AsSOCiation).

How many countries play Football as their national sport?

Again the correct response to this question will depend upon what are the criteria of recognizing a sport to be a country’s National Sport.

If we recognize a national sport to be a popularly intrinsic part of the country’s culture and to have the following characteristics:

★The rules and objectives of the sport or game are known in fairly great detail in the country or nation.

★ The game or sport is widely played or watched in the country or nation.

★ The game or sport has a long history of popularity or extreme current popularity in the country or nation

… then, football (soccer) is the National Sport of 126 different countries – though soccer is played in more than 200 countries.

REASON # 1

It is easily affordable and much more accessible than most other sports, as one needs only a ball and two goal posts. Kids from the poor countries who cannot afford to spend much but love to play can even manage with makeshift arrangements to play. So much so that children are known to play with a ball made out of paper or some other material, makeshift goals and any open space – whether it is grass, dirt or the street. So anybody who has the desire and love for playing the game has an opportunity to do it – all that they need is themselves and the ball.

It is a very fast game which is packed with action and can reach its crescendo within seconds at any stage. The game is free-flowing and with a constant action that can shift from one corner of the 100yards ground to the other within seconds. The dribbles, kicks and team-moves offer spectacular sights. There are no unnecessary long pauses like in many other sports. This keeps everyone watching absorbed and involved especially because no one can predict the timing of the goals. Additionally playing this game requires a lot of athleticism and many times the football players run 7 to 10 miles in a game without showing any signs of fatigue.

REASON # 3

It is a common man’s game with simple rules and anyone can play it – one does not have to be special (the biggest, the fastest, the tallest, or the strongest) to play it. Additionally, it is a great team sport with which many people identify a sense of personal and national pride. While an exceptionally talented player can make a team good, but alone he cannot dominate unless he has a good and supporting team. Thus It brings people together and unites them acting as an ultimate form of national pride

ways of playing football just like the different strengths and

weaknesses of their players. The six major styles of playing

football that could be recognized, include…



BRITISH STYLE:

Player Characteristics: quick, direct, physical

Playing Characteristics: Fast-paced game Attacks are set up quickly Few touches on the ball Passes are direct Passes sent over the opponent defenses Fierce fighting for possession of the ball Crosses are served in from any available

ITALIAN STYLE:

Player Characteristics: cautious, cunning, skillful

Playing Characteristics:

Very cautious about the number of players committed to forward positions

Players use a variety of skills

Rapid changes in the tempo during the buildup process

The forward runs can be at all angles that can be unpredictable and difficult to contain

Defenders slow the tempo down, play the ball back and shield.

Defenders saturate their own half and shut down their opposition.

LATIN STYLE: Player Characteristics: good

Playing Characteristics: Free-flowing play Possession-oriented game Attempts to make goal arise
