Music Ministries

Children’s Choir: Sings at the 9:00 Mass on the 3rd Sunday of the month from September—June, and meets for practice every Tuesday at 5:00pm in the school auditorium. Choir (Adult): Sings at 10:30am Mass on Sunday from September—June, and meets for practice on Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm in the church. Folk Group: Sings at 12 Noon Mass on Sundays from September—June, and meets for practice on Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm in the rectory basement. Brick Memorials

St. Raymond’s Commemorative Brick Memorials are a lasting and inspirational way to honor a loved one. Your brick will be a reminder to all who spend time at any of our four memorials, the importance of a life shared with family, friends and our parish community. Your commemorative brick can be placed at any of the four memorials of your choosing: the beautiful bronze Holy Family statue on the front lawn of the church on the corner of Carman Ave., at the lovely St. Therese of Lisiuex (“The Little Flower”) memorial garden on the back lawn of the church, the impressive God & Country memorial on the front lawn on the corner of Roosevelt Ave., or at our new St. Padre Pio statue in front of the arches connecting the church to the rectory. All bricks are 4” x 8” with a 3 line inscription area and can be purchased for $250 at the church rectory during office hours (Monday—Friday, 9am—4pm), or call the rectory office at 593-5000 and request an order form be mailed to you. All text will be printed in upper case lettering, centered on each brick, and with the same typeface. There is a maximum of 14 characters per line. You may also use numbers for the inscriptions. Spacing between words is considered a character, however, punctuation does not require a space. Please note: All inscriptions are subject to the approval of St. Raymond Church.

your most dreadful fears, or is it a God-shaped

hole? Does the empty tomb confirm the pointless-

ness of your life or is it the doorway to ultimate

meaning and validation? Is the resurrection of Jesus

good news for Jesus or Good News for human histo-

ry? Did the clock stop for the gospel story on Good

Friday, or did a window open on eternity? If you

are going to believe anything you say in church,

you have to start here, at the empty tomb. You

have to believe that God waits for you in the dark-

ness. And believe that Jesus Christ is risen! He is

risen indeed and among us always! Once again I feel very privileged and humbled to

be your pastor for this great Easter feast. I hope that

you have been supported on your Lenten and Holy

Week journey by our prayerful Masses and ser-

vices. Many people have helped to make Lent, Ho-

ly Week, the Triduum and Easter such uplifting cel-

ebrations of faith. Many thanks to our Decorators

and Cleaners for the care-filled attention they give

to our church, to our Maintenance Staff for their

tireless efforts in keeping our entire plant in great

shape, to our Rectory Staff for being the face of

Christ to all who come and call, to our Social Min-

istry Office for bringing Easter joy to those in need,

to our Religious Education Department and St.

Raymond School for teaching our children the les-

sons of faith. Thanks also to all our Liturgical Min-

isters (Ushers, Altar Servers, Sacristans, Lectors

and Eucharistic Ministers) who prayerfully aid us

at Mass and to our Music Ministry (Adult Choir,

Folk Group and Children’s Choir) for their heart-

felt music of praise and worship. A special thanks

to our RCIA Team for guiding our friends on their

faith journey to the Easter Sacraments at the Vig-

il. And thanks to our Deacons and Priests who

strive to serve the people of St. Raymond’s always

with the help of God’s grace. Finally, I wish to

thank all our Parish Volunteers who continue to

make the presence of the risen Jesus alive and well

in our parish. I am truly blest to be one with all of

you.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Happy Easter! The great

50 Day Feast begins! “This is the day the Lord

has made; let us rejoice and be glad.” Do you

still feel as if Easter “just happened?” Do you

know what this day means for you? Are you still

burdened by the ashes of your life? Today, Jesus

shows us the power of life within him. This day is

the beginning of faith. This is the day to move

on. Today, rejoice!

In what or whom do you trust? Money says we

trust in God, but surely some of us trust in money

almost as much (or perhaps more). Maybe you

base your ultimate confidence in your spouse, your

family, your parish or your country-right or

wrong. Years ago we trusted too much in the

news anchormen and now we tend to trust a little

too much in Wikipedia. Many people have also

become cynical enough not to place confidence in

anything at all-banks, politicians, clergy-nothing

and no one. Such people could be half right in

their skepticism. Much about this world is a scam.

Losing confidence in false authorities can be a po-

sition in which you discover what the truth is and

where genuine authority lies.

Easter Sunday asks us to look inside an empty

tomb and discover our faith. We are asked to be-

lieve in nothing-so to speak. We’re asked to do

what Jesus once proposed: to happily become

those who have not seen and yet believe. The

empty tomb is a blank page upon which many in-

terpretations can be written. Did they or some-

body take the body and put it elsewhere like Mary

Magdalene wonders in today’s gospel? Did the

disciples themselves steal the body as the Temple

authorities had feared? Did something else hap-

pen; something incredible; a thing that can’t be

described because it had never happened be-

fore? Did the man who was crucified, died, and

was buried walk free of the tomb on his own pow-

er?

Faith doesn’t begin with baptism. If it did the

world would be bursting with faith-filled peo-

ple! Faith doesn’t start with fidelity to the sacra-

ments, saying your prayers, reading your Bibles or

gathering with people who share the same morals

and principles. Christian faith starts here, at the

mouth of an empty tomb. It begins with an honest

assessment of a negative space. You are asked to

look into the void of death and answer truthful-

ly: What do you see there? Is that the shape of

EASTER MASSES OF REMEMBRANCE

Many people like to request the intention for a Mass on Easter Sunday. Since there are a limited number of Masses for Easter, all requests are not able to be fulfilled. Therefore, there will be a special Novena of Masses for Easter that will be the Easter Masses of Remembrance. Those whom you mention will be remembered at all the Masses during the Easter season. Special envelopes have been mailed with the regular envelope packet and in the Easter mailing to all parishioners. They are also available on the front side pews and on the back pews by the doors of the church. Simply fill out the intention you wish to have remembered on the front of the envelope, include your donation and either mail it back, drop it in the Sunday Mass collection or place it in one of the wooden boxes marked "Easter Masses." Please do so by Sunday, April 20th. Thank you.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus:

Let us celebrate the great and glorious feast of the Resurrection of our Lord, let us celebrate it with joy and devotion; the Lord is risen and has awakened the whole earth!

These beautiful words of St. John Chrysostom, the fourth century Bishop of Constantinople, call us to rejoice in this greatest of all mysteries: the Son of God became man for us! As son of man He died for us! He Who died for us and went to the netherworld to release Adam and Eve and all the saints, rose in His very human body now glorified for us. He sets us free. He transforms our lives. He pours forth the Holy Spirit which is a pure and unmerited gift for us. We now live as adopted sons and daughters of God the Father. We now truly are sisters and brothers of Jesus, the Risen One, Who sits at the right hand of the Father for us! On this Easter Day of 2014, I greet all of you just as the Risen Christ greeted the apostles in that Upper Room on that first Easter: Shalom! Peace! I pray that Christ’s peace may dwell in your hearts and be shared by us all this Easter and every Easter of our lives here on earth. His peace is God’s gift to us that we might be free from sin and from all distress because His life dwells in us and we dwell in Him. Yet we know we continue to live in a world of lights and shadows. In such a world, we must join our lives to Christ and share His mission, the mission the whole Church makes her own: that the world may believe. St. Paul is right: We were darkness. Now we are light. That means that we must be light to the world as Christ is the light that illumines our hearts and guides our journey on earth. Be confident that you share His mission. Be confident that you do so as a precious part of Christ’s Body, the Church. Together we are co-responsible to bring Christ to the poor, the vulnerable, the marginalized. Together we are co-responsible to show the world Christ’s life by our lives, Christ’s love by our loving concern for others. May this simple message resound in our hearts as we greet one another this Easter with the ancient cry of the early Christians: Christ is risen! He is truly risen! Alleluia! Alleluia!

The Divine Mercy Message

The message of The Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us. He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy. Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and the whole world. Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us. Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will receive.

The Canonization of Pope John XXIII & John Paul II

April 27, 2014

Pope Francis will canonize both Pope John XXIII and John Paul II in a single ceremony next Sunday, April 27th, Divine Mercy Sunday, in St. Peter’s Square. Blessed John Paul, known as a globetrotter who made 104 trips outside Italy, served as pope from 1978 to 2005 and was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on Divine Mercy Sunday, May 1, 2011. Blessed John XXIII, known particularly for convoking the Second Vatican Council, was pope from 1958 to 1963; Pope John Paul beatified him in 2000. In July, Pope Francis signed a decree recognizing the healing of a Costa Rican woman with a life-threatening brain aneurysm as the miracle needed for Blessed John Paul's canonization. The same day, the Vatican announced that

the pope had agreed with members of the Congregation for Saints' Causes that the canonization of Blessed John should go forward even without a second miracle attributed to his intercession. In the first miracle is needed for beatification in Pope John Paul's cause, a French nun suffering from Parkinson's disease was healed. In the cause of Pope John, the Vatican recognized as a miracle the healing of an Italian nun who was dying from complications after stomach surgery. In February, Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for Saints' Causes, said Pope Francis did not skip an essential step in approving Blessed John's canonization, but "only shortened the time to give the entire church the great opportunity of celebrating 2014 with John XXIII, the initiator of the Second Vatican Council, and John Paul II, who brought to life the pastoral, spiritual and doctrinal inspiration of its documents." Asked by reporters in July to describe the two late popes, Pope Francis said Blessed John was "a bit of the 'country priest,' a priest who loves each of the faithful and knows how to care for them; he did this as a bishop and as a nuncio" in Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and France before becoming a cardinal and patriarch of Venice. He was holy, patient, had a good sense of humor and, especially by calling the Second Vatican Council, was a man of courage, Pope Francis said. "He was a man who let himself be guided by the Lord." As for Blessed John Paul, Pope Francis told the reporters on the plane, "I think of him as 'the great missionary of the church," because he was "a man who proclaimed the Gospel everywhere."

YOUth Ministry

A reflection from one of out students on our recent Retreat to Graymoor Retreat Center and the Franciscan Friars...

This is my fourth year on retreat and I continue to learn something different every year I go back. For me this year I learned about poverty. Not material poverty but mental poverty. There are so many people in this world that have endless amounts of material things and yet are poor spiritually. The most important thing to have is the knowledge that we are loved by God and that is bigger than any material possession.

Mission News

We have asked those going on our Mis-sion Awareness Trip to Guatemala in June to give their reasons for going… I have been doing a lot of reflecting on my life lately, and feel the need to do something life changing. I've gotten into

the same old routine. My son, Zachary, has wanted to go to Guatemala for years. He is graduating from high school in June and decided that this is the perfect time for him to go. When he made his decision, I decid-ed that this would be a perfect way to bond with my son before he goes off to college. What better way by doing something good for the world and helping peo-ple in need. I think that we both need this trip and I am looking forward to experiencing this amazing journey with my son.

Congratulations to Emma Neary, a 7th grade Religious Education student, who received a Certificate of

Achievement in the 2014 Respect Life contest. Emma won for her participation in the contest by submitting a poem she wrote. Congratulations to Emma on a job well done!!

First Holy Communion Rehearsals

The following are the First Holy Communion rehearsal dates (noted by teacher and group number). Children are required to attend both days of rehearsal. All rehearsals begin at 3:30pm in St. Raymond Church and end at 5pm. Please be prompt in dropping off and picking up your child.

Registration for the 2014-2015 is now in progress. The Registration forms are now available on the parish website: www.saintraymonds.org., go to the Religious Education tab and click on forms.

All students must register regardless if they are already in our program. Parent or guardian of first grade or new students to the program must register in the office because there are additional forms that need to be completed and a copy of the child’s baptismal certificate is required (unless baptized at St. Raymond’s).

Please note in order to have your child(ren) placed and confirmed in a class, full payment (including additional fees) must be submitted along with the Registration forms. All outstanding fees for 2013/2014 must be settled as well before sending in this Registration form. All Religious Education families must be formally registered parishioners. Do not assume that if you were married or that your children were baptized here that you are automatically a parishioner. If you are not sure that you are registered, please contact the Rectory at 516-593-5000 for verification.

2014 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL

“Serving God by Serving Others”

Every year, the Catholic Ministries Appeal provides the means to continue the mission that

Christ has entrusted to us: to serve, to educate, to care for the poor, and to be a beacon of

hope. The ministries, agencies, and programs that benefit from this effort allow us to fulfill the

mission given to us as Catholics.

We are counting on you-members of our parish family to participate in this important

campaign for the ministries and programs of our Church and for all who depend on

them. More than 600,000 people each year, many in our own communities.

To all of you who have already responded, I am so grateful for your generosity. You are

truly a blessing! As your pastor, I want to let you know that I too support the Catholic Ministries Appeal and

I have confidence that our parish will do everything in its power to once again make the

Catholic Ministries Appeal successful. Remember that St. Raymond’s will also benefit

financially when we are successful in reaching our goal in payment by the end of the year. We

will receive 20% of the money raised up to the goal and 80% of any money raised over the

goal amount. We have not reached our goal in four years. 2014 would be a great year to

reverse that trend.

Last month we were pleased to have Marion Dreyfus as a representative from the Catholic

Ministries Appeal Office. Marion spoke at all the Masses to inform, invite and encourage us

all to participate in the 2014 CMA Appeal. Pledge/gift envelopes were in the pews for

everyone to take home, which many of you did. They are still available on the pews shelves

by the rear doors of the church. If you are able to make a pledge or one time gift, please

return the envelope to us or mail directly to the appeal office. Either way St. Raymond Parish

will get the credit.

If everyone in our parish family contributed according to their means we could easily reach

our goal and even go beyond. Then 20% plus would come back to St. Raymond’s as a

rebate. And that would be great!

Please remember that no gift or pledge is too small and all gifts make a difference to

someone’s life! Below is our 2014 CMA goal and current totals. Thanks for your help. God bless
