7. Positioning (GPS)

About GPSYour device has an internal GPS receiver.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) isoperated by the government of the UnitedStates, which is solely responsible for itsaccuracy and maintenance. The accuracyof location data can be affected byadjustments to GPS satellites made by theUnited States government and is subjectto change with the United StatesDepartment of Defense civil GPS policy andthe Federal Radionavigation Plan.Accuracy can also be affected by poorsatellite geometry. Availability andquality of GPS signals may be affected byyour location, buildings, natural obstaclesand weather conditions. GPS signals maynot be available inside buildings orunderground and may be impaired bymaterials such as concrete and metal.

GPS should not be used for preciselocation measurement, and you shouldnever rely solely on location data from theGPS receiver and cellular radio networksfor positioning or navigation.

The GPS receiver draws its power from thedevice battery. Using the GPS receiver maydischarge the battery more quickly.

About assisted GPSYour device supports A-GPS (networkservice). With A-GPS, your device receivesuseful satellite information from anassistance data server over the cellularnetwork. With the help of assisted data, your device can obtain the GPS positionfaster. When you activate an applicationthat utilizes positioning information, toenable A-GPS you need to have a 3Gnetwork connection active.

Assisted GPS (A-GPS) is used to retrieveassistance data over a packet dataconnection, which assists in calculatingthe coordinates of your current locationwhen your device is receiving signals fromsatellites.

Your device is preconfigured to use theNokia A-GPS service, if no service provider-specific A-GPS settings are available. Theassistance data is retrieved from the NokiaA-GPS service server only when needed.

View your locationYour current location is displayed in themap gadget on the desktop.

View detailsSelect the red spot.

Open Ovi MapsSelect the Ovi Maps icon in the mapgadget.Your current location is displayed in OviMaps.

Ovi MapsWith the Ovi Maps internet service, youcan browse places from all over the world, plan trips, search for addresses and pointsof interest, and save them in your Ovi Mapsaccount. You can also share your locationwith friends, and see where they currentlyare. In the current version of Ovi Maps, theturn-by-turn navigation feature is notavailable.

If the Maps 3.0 application is installed inyour Nokia Booklet 3G, you cansynchronize places, collections, androutes between Ovi Maps and your device.

Ovi Maps is free of charge. However, datatransfer costs may apply if you establish

an internet connection to synchronizeyour Nokia Booklet 3G with Ovi Maps. Forinformation about data transmissioncharges, contact your network serviceprovider.

Tips on creating a GPS connectionInitially your device must receive signalsfrom at least four satellites to be able tocalculate the coordinates of your location. When the initial calculation has beenmade, it may be possible to continuecalculating your location with threesatellites. However, the accuracy isgenerally better when more satellites arefound.

Establishing a GPS connection may takefrom a couple of seconds to severalminutes. Establishing a GPS connection ina vehicle may take longer.

If no satellite signal can be found, considerthe following:

• If you are indoors, go outdoors toreceive a better signal.

• If you are outdoors, move to a moreopen space.

• If the weather conditions are bad, thesignal strength may be affected.

• Some vehicles have tinted (athermic)windows, which may block thesatellite signals.

Ensure you do not cover the antenna withyour hand.

Your device model can act as a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed not to exceed the limits for exposure to radiowaves recommended by international guidelines. Theseguidelines were developed by the independent scientificorganization ICNIRP and include safety margins designed toassure the protection of all persons, regardless of age andhealth.

The exposure guidelines employ a unit of measurementknown as the Specific Absorption Rate or SAR. The SAR limitstated in the ICNIRP guidelines is 2.0 watts/kilogram (W/kg)averaged over 10 grams of tissue. Tests for SAR are conductedusing standard operating positions with the devicetransmitting at its highest certified power level in all testedfrequency bands. When used in the normal use position, thatis in direct contact with the body (as illustrated above), thisdevice meets the ICNIRP exposure guidelines.

Your device is also designed to meet the requirements forexposure to radio waves established by the FederalCommunications Commission (USA) and Industry Canada. These requirements set a SAR limit of 1.6W/kg averaged overone gram of tissue. The highest SAR value reported under thisstandard during product certification when used in thenormal use position, that is in direct contact with the body,is 0.06 W/kg .
