Survey 2: Signalized Intersections
Pedestrian Audit Survey 1
SURVEY 2. SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS
Getting Started This intersection audit work sheet should be used for one intersection only. For every intersection that you observe, you will need to fill out one Section A work sheet and one Section B work sheet. We suggest allowing 20-30 minutes per intersection. Intersection observed: location at______________________________and________________________________ Street Name 1 Street Name 2 Day of week: _________________________Time observations began: _____________ □ A.M. □ P.M. Date: _________________________ Time observations ended: _____________ □ A.M. □ P.M.
Signalized Intersections: Section A Directions: Place a √ next to your answer and write the point value in the space provided. 1. Does the pedestrian signal give people walking at an average pace enough time to safely cross the street (or reach a median)?
Points Yes =0.67 No =0
Points Awarded: _____________
2. Is a marked crosswalk present?
Yes, proceed to question 3 No, proceed to question 5
Survey 2: Signalized Intersections
Pedestrian Audit Surveys 2
3. If a marked crosswalk is present, is the crosswalk painted with parallel pavement markings or with ladder pavement markings? Points
Parallel Pavement Markings, proceed to question 4 =0 Ladder Pavement Markings, proceed to question 5 =0.67
Points Awarded: _____________
4. Is the crosswalk located in any of the following scenarios:
a) across heavily used streets with signs specifically for pedestrians, b) where a crosswalk crosses a street not controlled by signals or stop signs, or c) on any street with three or more lanes?
Points Yes =0 No =0.67
Points Awarded: _____________ 5. How many steps does it take a pedestrian to cross the street (or to reach a median, neutral ground, etc)? Points
Less than 17 steps =0.67 Less than 20 steps =0.33 More than 20 steps =0
Points Awarded: _____________
Parallel Pavement Markings Ladder Pavement Markings

6. Is a Pedestrian Signal present? Points
Yes, proceed to question 8 =0.67 No, proceed to question 7 =0
Points Awarded: _____________
7. Are any of the following statements true?
• The intersection is close to a school, is in a school zone, or near a university • The intersection has pedestrian pushbuttons that don’t work • Signals available to automobiles provide unsafe guidance or are not visible to
pedestrians • Signaling creates conflict between pedestrians and motorists • The intersection is close to other intersections equipped with pedestrian signals • The intersection is close to areas that draw children or elderly • The intersection is near another activity that would attract pedestrians
Points
Yes =0 No =0.67
Points Awarded :_____________
8. Approximately how long must the pedestrian wait for the Pedestrian Signal or an opportunity to cross safely?
Points Less than 15 seconds =0.67 15-30 seconds =0.5 30-40 seconds =0.33 40-60 seconds =0.17 over 60 seconds =0
Points Awarded: _____________

9. Does a stop line setback exist and is at least 4 feet behind the crosswalk? Note: Answer “No” only if a stop line is non-‐existent. Do not answer “No” if it is faded or barely recognizable. You will have an option later in the tool to address faded stop lines.
Points Yes =0.67 No, a stop line exists but it is less than 4’ from =0.33
the crosswalk No, a stop line is not present =0
Points Awarded: _____________
Add all Points Awarded to get the Subtotal Points in Section A: _____________

Signalized Intersections: Section B Directions: Place a √ next to your answer and write the point value in the space provided. 1. Do all curbs of the intersection have an acceptable curb radius relative to their size? See below for further instructions: Points
Yes =0 No =0.5
Points Awarded: _____________
Directions cont’d: Position yourself in the street so you are lined up with both curbs of the corner [Point A]. See Figure 1. Measure the distance from you to where the curb starts to curve [Point B]. That is the curb radius.
Curb Radius: ___________
Use the table below to determine the acceptable curb radius for your specific intersection. The table allows for different intersection combinations, such as the intersection of a minor and a minor street (max curb radius = 15') or a minor and major street (max curb radius = 30'). Maximum Curb Radius by Street Type Minor Street Major Street Minor Street Major Street

2. Is a “porkchop” lane present?
Yes – proceed to question 3 No – proceed to question 4
3. Are all the following conditions met in the “porkchop” lane?
• The pedestrian crossings are at 90 degrees once the “porkchop” lane is crossed and placed where drivers can easily see the pedestrian crossing ahead
• Pedestrians and drivers are able to clearly easily see each other (no physical obstructions nearby)
• A stop sign and marked crosswalk are present • The “porkchop” is elevated and not only marked on the ground
Points
Yes =0 No =1
Points Awarded: _____________
4. Are symbols in the pedestrian crossing indicator (walk sign) clearly visible to the average person?
Points
Yes =0 No =0.5
Points Awarded: _____________

5. Is parking allowed (or restrictions not enforced) within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection? (Note: this only applies to 4-‐way intersections, not T-‐intersections)
Points Yes =0.5 No =0
Points Awarded: _____________
6. Is there a 2-4 second delay before and after the pedestrian crossing signal appears to allow pedestrians to have a head start / short time after the light turns red to get across the street?
Points
Yes =0 No =0.5
Points Awarded: _____________
7. Does the crosswalk have curb cuts/ramps on both sides of the street, including the neutral ground if present?
Points Yes =0 No =0.5
Points Awarded: _____________
8. Do crosswalks, sidewalks, and any curb cuts all align?
e.g.
Points
Yes =0 No =0.25
Points Awarded :_____________
Curb cut & crosswalk do not align. Pedestrians are encouraged to walk outside the crosswalk from the curb.
Curb cut & crosswalk align Pedestrians are directed towards the crosswalk

9. Is a driveway or curb cut within 20ft of the intersection?
Points Yes =0.25 No =0
Points Awarded: _____________
10. Which of the following below best describes the crosswalk markings and stop line setback markings?
Points The markings are clearly visible =0 The markings are faded and/or sections are missing =0.5 There are no markings =0

11. Is the median/neutral ground at least 6’ wide?
Points Yes =0 No =0.5 There is no median/neutral ground present =0
